Multi-Decadal Gravel Beach Dynamics In The United Kingdom And Ireland: Insights From Satellite-Derived Shorelines, Aikaterini Konstantinou, Tim Scott, Gerd Masselink, Christopher Stokes, Tom Hamilton, Bruno Castelle
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Gravel beach systems provide vital protection from coastal flooding and erosion. They are highly dynamic and exhibit complex responses to hydrodynamic forcing over a range of temporal (hourly centennial) and spatial scales (m to km). Yet gravel beach evolution, particularly at interannual to decadal scales, across the spectrum of coastal settings, remains poorly understood. We use four decades of Satellite-Derived Shoreline (SDS) data to explore the morphodynamic behaviour of 45 selected gravel beach systems around the United Kingdom and Ireland. We apply a site-specific SDS extraction methodology and derive shoreline trends along 1554 shore-normal transects. Our findings indicate significant variability …

Urban densification threatens biodiversity, yet conventional greenspace expansion is con-strained by limited land availability. Living wall systems (LWS) offer potential biodiversity enhancement through vertical green infrastructure, though their ecological value re-mains underexplored. This study evaluated the biodiversity performance of three LWS in Plymouth, UK, using multi-taxa surveys to assess invertebrate communities, bird assemblages, and bat activity. A scoping review of 2,638 publications revealed limited research on LWS biodiversity, with only 27% of biodiversity-focused papers referencing specific species. Field surveys employed standardized protocols including flower-visiting pollinator observations, spider assessments, soil invertebrate extraction using Tullgren funnels, acoustic bird monitoring, and bat emergence …

Mcmc-Net: Accelerating Markov Chain Monte Carlo With Neural Networks For Inverse Problems, Anuj Abhishek
Faculty Scholarship
In many computational problems, using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) can be prohibitively time-consuming. We propose MCMC-Net, a simple yet efficient way to accelerate MCMC via neural networks. The key idea of our approach is to substitute the true likelihood function of the MCMC method with a neural operator based surrogate. We extensively evaluate the accuracy and speedup of our method on three different partial differential equation-based inverse problems where likelihood computations are computationally expensive, namely electrical impedance tomography, diffuse optical tomography, and quantitative photoacoustic tomography. MCMC-Net performs similar to the classical likelihood counterpart but with a significant speedup. …

Background: Multimodality treatment {surgery + pre-operative chemoradiation [chemoradiotherapy for oesophageal cancer followed by surgery (CROSS)] or perioperative chemotherapy [fluorouracil, leucovorin, oxaliplatin and docetaxel (FLOT)]} is the standard of care for locally advanced oesophageal cancer. Whilst highly tolerated, clinically, patients may experience toxicities which negatively impact their functional status. Exercise prehabilitation aims to improve functional status in advance of oesophagectomy to minimise postoperative morbidities. The PRE-HIIT trial examined the ability of a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) exercise programme to improve cardiorespiratory fitness in advance of complex cancer surgery. This cohort study charts the physical functioning of a sub-cohort of participants recruited …

Balancing Act: Addressing Child Quantity-Quality Trade-Off In The Philippine Households With Educational And Health Social Programs, John Andrew A. Alsol, Zed Tristan L. Dy, Maire Carroline T. Magante
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
The child quantity-quality (CQQ) trade-off has been extensively studied in economic research since it was first introduced by Becker and Lewis in 1973. Studies have argued that the current economic circumstances and the presence of government aid in education and health determine the existence and extent of the CQQ trade-off. However, there is a dearth of empirically tested research on the possible decreasing effects of social programs on the CQQ trade-off. Using the 2019 Annual Poverty Indicators Survey, this paper seeks to determine the effect of education and health social programs on the CQQ trade-off in the Philippines. Probit models …

Network Pharmacology And Molecular Docking Analysis Of Nephelium Lappaceum (Rambutan) Compounds As Potential Alternative Treatments For Lung Cancer, Dwi Utami, Muhammad Farid, Rachma Greta Perdana Putri
Makara Journal of Science
Introduction: Lung cancer is characterized by high mortality rates and poor prognosis, further requiring alternative therapies owing to the adverse effects of conventional chemotherapy. Rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum L.) has antimicrobial, antiproliferative, and antioxidant properties and can cure cancer. Method: Compounds from rambutan peel were identified through PubChem and analyzed for physicochemical properties using SwissADME. Target proteins were identified using SuperPred and compared with lung cancer–related proteins from GeneCards via Venny. Protein interactions were examined and visualized using STRING and Cytoscape, respectively. Protein activity was analyzed using WebGestalt, and docking simulations were performed using Autodock 4.2.6. Result: Physicochemical analysis of …

Background: The clinical utility of diagnostic neuroimaging for pediatric patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) for psychosis remains unclear. We sought to estimate the prevalence of and characteristics associated with clinically significant neuroimaging findings among pediatric patients presenting to the ED with symptoms of psychosis who had neuroimaging performed.
Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study included visits by patients 5 to < 18 years old presenting with symptoms of psychosis to 28 EDs affiliated with the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Collaborative Research Committee from 2016 to 2019 and had neuroimaging performed. We estimated the rate of clinically significant neuroimaging findings, defined as those resulting in further testing, treatment, or medical admission, overall and by imaging modality. Multivariable logistic regression models examined presenting features associated with clinically significant findings.
Results: Clinically significant neuroimaging findings were identified in 5.4% (95% CI 4.2%, 6.9%) of 1118 ED visits (54% male, median [IQR] 14 [11-16] years old). Clinically significant findings occurred in 4.9% (34/699) of head computed tomography scans and 7.5% …

Social learning enables a subject to make decisions by observing the actions of another. How neural circuits acquire relevant information during observation to guide subsequent behavior is unknown. Utilizing an observational spatial working memory task, we show that neurons in the rat anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) associated with spatial trajectories during self-running in a maze are reactivated when observing another rat running the same maze. The observation-induced ACC activities are reduced in error trials and are correlated with activities of hippocampal place cells representing the same trajectories. The ACC activities during observation also predict subsequent hippocampal place cell activities during …

Covalent inhibitors are an emerging class of therapeutics, but methods to comprehensively profile their binding kinetics and selectivity across the proteome have been limited. Here we introduce COOKIE-Pro (COvalent Occupancy KInetic Enrichment via Proteomics), an unbiased method for quantifying irreversible covalent inhibitor binding kinetics on a proteome-wide scale. COOKIE-Pro uses a two-step incubation process with mass spectrometry-based proteomics to determine kinact and KI values for covalent inhibitors against both on-target and off-target proteins. We validated COOKIE-Pro using BTK inhibitors spebrutinib and ibrutinib, accurately reproducing known kinetic parameters and identifying both expected and unreported off-targets. The method revealed that …

Oncogenic KRAS is amongst the key genetic drivers for initiation and maintenance of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Here, we show that engineered exosomes with KrasG12D specific siRNA (iExoKrasG12D) reveal a biodistribution in pancreas with negligible toxicity in preclinical studies in mice and Rhesus macaques. Clinical testing of iExoKrasG12D in the iEXPLORE (iExoKrasG12D in Pancreatic Cancer) Phase I study employed a non-randomized single-arm classical 3 + 3 dose escalation design (Phase Ia), followed by an accelerated titration design (Phase Ib) (NCT03608631). The primary outcomes included safety, tolerability and target engagement, and the secondary outcomes aimed to assess disease control. …

Ebola virus (EBOV) is a nonsegmented, negative-sense virus (NNSV) with a single-stranded RNA genome. EBOV encodes for a limited number of proteins and thus depends on host factors to facilitate viral replication and pathogenesis. Of the virus-encoded proteins, multifunctional EBOV VP35 (eVP35) is necessary for host immune evasion and viral RNA synthesis. Previous proteomics studies identified an interaction between eVP35 and the host E3 ubiquitin ligase Mindbomb 2 (MIB2). Here, we show how an NNLNS (Asn-Asn-Leu-Asn-Ser) motif (residues 201 to 205) within eVP35 serves as a binding site for MIB2. This motif is critical for eVP35-dependent inhibition of MIB2-mediated interferon …

Leucine-rich repeat containing 15 (LRRC15) has emerged as an attractive biomarker and target for cancer therapy. Transforming growth factor-β (TGFβ) induces the expression of this plasma membrane protein specifically in aggressive and treatment resistant tumor cells derived from mesenchymal stem cells, with minimal expression observed in non-neoplastic tissues. We have developed a humanized monoclonal antibody, DUNP19, that specifically binds with high affinity to a phylogenetically conserved LRRC15 epitope and is rapidly internalized upon LRRC15 binding. In multiple subcutaneous and orthotopic tumor xenograft mouse models, Lutetium-177 labeled DUNP19 ([

Acinetobacter baumannii is recognized as the paradigm of multidrug-resistant superbug, topping the WHO priority list of critical human pathogens. Interestingly, it senses and responds to blue light, which modulates global aspects of its physiology, including pathogenicity. We hypothesized that light could serve as a signal to synchronize the bacterial physiology to the host's behavior and/or to the environment. At environmental temperatures, light regulation is mainly governed by the photoreceptor BlsA. In this work, we identified the existence of daily rhythms in blsA promoter activity displaying a robust response to light, as well as endogenous circadian rhythms in A. baumannii. In …

Mangrove forests provide a wide range of ecosystem services that benefit both people and nature. While many countries have lost nearly 50 % of their mangroves in the past 50 years, Aotearoa New Zealand's mangroves are rapidly expanding in many locations due to increased sediment inputs from land-use changes and urbanisation. In the Auckland region, where mangrove extent has increased 4.5-fold since 1940, we quantified the blue carbon sequestration benefits from seven mangrove expansion sites. Our results indicate that New Zealand's mangroves sequester 86,000 t CO2 annually, with an additional 3,400 t CO2 sequestered in 2020 due to mangrove expansion. …

Alterations in lipid profiles have been shown in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the role of cytochrome P450 family-1 subfamily B member 1 (CYP1B1) in cigarette smoke (CS)-induced lipid accumulation in alveolar type II epithelial (AT2) cells. We observed a steady increase in CYP1B1 protein levels in AT2 cells from COPD patients. Additionally, CS exposure induced CYP1B1 expression in AT2 cells of murine lungs. In vitro, treatment with cigarette smoke extract (CSE) not only upregulated CYP1B1 expression but also triggered lipid accumulation in AT2-like …

Plastic Makes Perfect: An Analysis Of Plastic Surgery As Rehabilitation In Early To Late 20th Century Prison Populations, Jack West
The Ozark Historical Review
As early as 1910, journalists from around the United States reported on the cause-and- effect relationship between a criminal’s physical appearance, their offenses, and the plastic surgeons willing to help them. These surgeons were interested in changing the physical “causes” of criminality to sever the mental roots of crime, inferiority, and anti-social attitude. This paper examines the use of plastic surgery programs as reform in prison through the lens of popular newspaper and journal articles and argues that public perception and reaction revealed in these articles shaped the prison program’s journey from its underground beginning to its eventual demise.

For the Jewish community in Europe, threats to their life, culture, and community had become a real burden, even before Nazi-occupation. An ever marginalized and terrorized lot, efforts to collect Yiddish history and literature had not been particularly successful. That is why the presence of the Libraries and Archives in the "Jerusalem of Lithuania," or Vilna, which had made efforts to preserve and research Yiddish culture, was so important and why their fall in 1940 was so devastating. This work looks at the actions of everyone involved, from the fearless smuggling of the Paper Brigade to efforts to collectivize and …

RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences
The modified Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) in bioenergy research evaluated four upland switchgrass cultivars namely Carthage, NE2010, RC Sundance, and Sunburst for bioethanol production using a separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF) process. The cultivars were not different in their biomass composition, sugar and ethanol yields. Carthage produced the highest ethanol yield (10 g/L), followed by Sunburst (9 g/L). A strong correlation was observed between glucose concentration at 48 hours (maximum glucose release) and ethanol yield at 72 hours. Ethanol production increased after 48 hours, and by 72 hours, residual glucose levels in the fermentation medium were negligible. The fermentation …

Abstract
Women remain significantly underrepresented in senior leadership roles in higher education, a disparity that is particularly pronounced in male-dominated disciplines, such as sport management (Chance, 2023; Lozano et al., 2023). This qualitative study examines the challenges faced by women in leadership positions within sport management education and the strategies they employ to overcome these barriers. Thirteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with biological females holding leadership roles at both teaching- and research-focused institutions. Participants ranged in age from 32 to 74 and had between one and twenty-four years of leadership experience. Using thematic analysis, key challenges identified included male-dominated work …

Human-Machine Communication
Student use of GenAI is growing and so are the faculty concerns. With research providing mixed suggestions and approaches, this study sought to understand the student perspective on ethical uses, their own motives and perceived benefits of GenAI use, the risks involved, and their perceptions of susceptibility and severity related to unethical use (i.e., plagiarism/cheating). Results revealed the complexity of student considerations regarding the uses, risks, and benefits of GenAI and its potential for personalized learning enhancement. Students generally view the likelihood of being caught submitting AI-generated work as their own as high and the consequences as severe. The viability …
