(Si15-022) Five Efficient Cryptography Authentication Schemes With Functional Relation On General Spaces, L. Sreenivasulu Reddy, S. Lakshmisri

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This work addresses the growing demand for diversification in cryptographic schemes to secure communication. This work proposes a novel suite of algorithms, including two block ciphers (TPBlock and TAP-Block), two stream ciphers (TP-Stream and TAP-Stream), and a zero-knowledge proof scheme (F-zero knowledge proof). All schemes leverage functional relations defined over the real number space with a dimension greater than one for encryption, decryption, and key generation, offering an alternative to the number-theoretical aspects and algebraic structures commonly used in existing schemes. The main goal of this work is to introduce and propose these five novel cryptographic schemes to provide authentication …

(Si15-121) Analyzing Seitr Tuberculosis Transmission Model Using Caputo–Fabrizio Fractional Derivative With Diverse Contact Rates, S. S. Sumaiya Banu, T. Gunasekar, S. Manikandan, Kamalendra Kumar, M. Suba

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In the modern age, tuberculosis remains a pressing global health concern. Our study introduces and evaluates the SEITR pandemic TB transmission model, dividing the population into five compartments to explore distinct characteristics relevant to our investigation. Additionally, we delve into the application of fractional calculus. Through the Laplace transform method, we derive series solutions for all compartments, ensuring their existence and uniqueness. We also investigate the reproduction number of the tuberculosis epidemic model, examining how varying contact rates impact disease spread. We apply the predictor-corrector method for the Caputo-Fabrizio fractional derivative to verify the accuracy of our approach. This accurately …

(Si15-120) Exploring Fractional Difference Equations And Their Applications With Mahgoub-Transform, Tharmalingam Gunasekar, Periyasamy Udhayasankar, Prabakaran Raghavendran, Kamalendra Kumar

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

We discuss the introduction and study of the nabla discrete Mahgoub transform along with its defining properties. The transform of fractional sums and fractional differences are derived, demonstrating the applicability of the transform from the computational viewpoint. Employing the transform, fractional difference equations with initial value problems are solved, thereby enhancing the knowledge of their closed forms. As a side-effect of the Mahgoub-transforms, an attractive connection is established, showing that the discrete Mittag-Leffler function acts as the eigenfunction for the Caputo-type fractional difference operator nabla. These results strengthen the core basis for fractional calculus and herald industrial applications in various …

Population Genomics And Status Of The Flattened Musk Turtle (Sternotherus Depressus) In The Locust Fork Of The Black Warrior River, Seamus C. O'Brien

Theses

Alabama is home to some of the highest freshwater endemism in the world and ranks near the top in numbers of endangered and extinct species. One of these endangered species is the Flattened Musk Turtle (FMT), only found in the Black Warrior River Drainage of Alabama above the Fall Line. The FMT is listed as “Threatened” by the United State Fish and Wildlife Service under the Endangered Species Act and is considered Critically Endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature due to drastic declines in populations since the 1980s. Declines have been attributed to several factors, including …

Assessing Expected Cover Of Invasive Flora Species Near Corridor Features By Distance, Joshua G. Logan Oct 2025

Assessing Expected Cover Of Invasive Flora Species Near Corridor Features By Distance, Joshua G. Logan

Theses

Fragmentation of landscapes has been a growing topic of interest within scientific literature over the past several decades, as the way we as humans affect our planet becomes more apparent as the years go on. As humans, we have shaped the land and what it contains in immeasurable ways, erasing or forever altering entire natural ecosystems. Chief among the drivers altering these ecosystems is the fragmentation of landscapes, which can have all kinds of effects on natural ecosystems, from limiting nutrient transport to providing easier access for invasives to permeate throughout a landscape. Corridors are significant areas of interest regarding …

Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 38. Alfred Russel Wallace's "Revolt Of Democracy": A Critical Analysis Of Early 20th Century Labor Theory And Its Contemporary Relevance, James Williams, Charles H. Smith Editor

Faculty/Staff Personal Papers

This article examines Alfred Russel Wallace’s political treatise The Revolt of Democracy (1913), analyzing his theoretical framework for addressing labor unrest and economic inequality in early 20th-century Britain. Wallace's work presents a comprehensive critique of competitive capitalism and proposes systematic government intervention to address structural poverty. Through close textual analysis and comparison with contemporary UK labor conditions, this study evaluates the enduring relevance of Wallace's economic theories and policy prescriptions. The analysis reveals significant continuities between early 20th-century and contemporary debates about living wages, government employment standards, and wealth redistribution, while highlighting both the prescience and limitations of Wallace’s analytical …

Bone Mineral Density Of Willow Ptarmigan (Lagopus Lagopus) As A Potential Taphonomic Factor In Skeletal Part Attrition, Frank J. Dirrigl Jr., Samuel R. Buchanan Oct 2025

Bone Mineral Density Of Willow Ptarmigan (Lagopus Lagopus) As A Potential Taphonomic Factor In Skeletal Part Attrition, Frank J. Dirrigl Jr., Samuel R. Buchanan

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences Faculty Publications

Agents of taphonomy can bias skeletal parts and the frequency of bones in archaeological sites. An important factor to consider is the possible effect of bone density-mediated attrition on archaeornithological assemblages. We scanned willow ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus) specimens using a Lunar iDXA and an enCcore small animal body add-on to develop a rank-order scheme based on the volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) of skeletal parts. Our results identified the tibiotarsus and femur to be the least dense bones, while carpometacarpus, 3rd digit, and coracoid were the densest. This novel scheme allowed us to evaluate a sample of 22 …

Oceanographic Drivers Of Recruitment And Reproductive Potential Of Gopher Rockfish (Sebastes Carnatus) – Historical Variability And Future Projections Under Climate Change, Madison Sandquist Oct 2025

Oceanographic Drivers Of Recruitment And Reproductive Potential Of Gopher Rockfish (Sebastes Carnatus) – Historical Variability And Future Projections Under Climate Change, Madison Sandquist

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Anticipating climate-change impacts on fisheries requires understanding how marine species respond to future ocean conditions. The productivity and abundance of fish populations are largely shaped by the survival of early life stages, which are highly sensitive to ocean conditions. Variation in ocean conditions can influence early stages of fish species by influencing reproductive output of adults and/or larval health, survival, and retention. The goal of this study was to understand how oceanographic variables can impact reproduction and recruitment of a nearshore rockfish species, gopher rockfish (Sebastes carnatus), helping to forecast potential climate change impacts on the population. I assessed historical …

Religious Conflicts In Disguise: The Limits Of The Law In Tackling Conflicts With Religious Dimensions, Yael Efron

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

In previous publications, we have established the crucial differences between conflicts with religious dimensions (CRDs) and other types of conflicts. We claim that a legal solution to CRDs is rarely sufficient to terminate the conflict and often might lead to further damage to communities and persons, sometimes even harsher than the original dispute. Since not all CRDs are similar, a theorized model of their distinguishing elements—time, intensity, and proximity to core values—assists us in differentiating them. By analyzing the elements of CRDs in accordance with the TIV model, we can more easily determine which conflicts are suitable for legal process …

Pursuing Restorative Justice For The Legacy Of Federal Indian Boarding Schools, Jilly Horowitz Oct 2025

Pursuing Restorative Justice For The Legacy Of Federal Indian Boarding Schools, Jilly Horowitz

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

This Note examines the United States’ federal boarding school policy, designed to eliminate Native populations, and the federal government’s efforts from June 2021 to December 2024 to acknowledge and address its harms. For 150 years, Native children were subjected to this brutal policy and were removed from their communities and placed in boarding schools. These schools were focused less on providing education and opportunity for Native students, and instead were tools to carry out a concentrated federal policy of cultural assimilation and forcible removal from Native lands. The federal government implemented this policy throughout the country, operating or funding 451 …

Venezuelan Migrants In Prostitution: A Personal Decision?, Yazmin Maria Lucila Cadena Camargo, Izara Maite Mondragon Moreno, Isabela Osorio Jaramillo, Paula Angélica Suárez Álvarez, Andrés Duarte Osorio, Carlos Gómez-Restrepo

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

This paper explores the multifaceted experiences of Venezuelan migrant women engaged in prostitution, framed through three critical moments: the “decision to enter in prostitution,” the unique abuses faced, and the resultant consequences on mental, physical, and social health. The study highlights how socioeconomic vulnerabilities—exacerbated by migration and poverty—significantly influence the likelihood of entering prostitution. It also shows how traumatic experiences, particularly in childhood and adolescence, coupled with a lack of support networks, contribute to a heightened risk of exploitation. Eleven life stories were collected through a phenomenological approach, revealing a common narrative of abuse, poverty, and the search for survival …

Hooks For Four-Dimensional Ecology Education (4dee) Teaching With Differing Audiences Of Nonmajors, Sara E. Scanga, Vikki L. Rodgers, Loren B. Byrne, Justin R. St. Juliana, Jon M. Honea, Erica S. Tietjen, George Middendorf Oct 2025

Hooks For Four-Dimensional Ecology Education (4dee) Teaching With Differing Audiences Of Nonmajors, Sara E. Scanga, Vikki L. Rodgers, Loren B. Byrne, Justin R. St. Juliana, Jon M. Honea, Erica S. Tietjen, George Middendorf

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Nonmajors (i.e., undergraduate students not majoring in the natural sciences) constitute a majority of United States college graduates and are a large potential audience for courses with ecology content. However, nonmajors may be unmotivated to learn about ecology because they perceive it to be uninteresting and irrelevant to their everyday lives or career goals. Although the Four-Dimensional Ecology Education (4DEE) framework can be adapted for nonmajors courses as a starting point to improve student engagement, we suggest that nonmajors ecology instructors also use ecology hooks as effective gateways to 4DEE that will motivate and deepen student learning. Selecting and developing …

Therapeutic Silencing Of Integrin Α11 Attenuates Myofibroblast Activation In Vocal Fold Fibrosis, Linh P. Schiffer, Ryan M. Friedman, Yashna Gupta, Riccardo Gottardi Oct 2025

Therapeutic Silencing Of Integrin Α11 Attenuates Myofibroblast Activation In Vocal Fold Fibrosis, Linh P. Schiffer, Ryan M. Friedman, Yashna Gupta, Riccardo Gottardi

Annual Student Research Poster Session

Vocal fold scarring (VFS), a fibrotic condition of the lamina propria, commonly results from prolonged intubation or laryngeal trauma and leads to impaired vocal function and often irreversible dysphonia. Following injury, fibroblasts are activated by proinflammatory cytokines—particularly transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGFβ1)—which induces their differentiation into contractile, ECM-producing myofibroblasts. A key marker of this activation is alpha-smooth muscle actin (αSMA). Among the drivers of this fibrotic response is integrin α11β1, a collagen-binding transmembrane protein encoded by the ITGA11 gene. ITGA11 has been implicated in multiple fibrotic diseases due to its role in enhancing TGFβ1 signaling and promoting myofibroblast activation. …

Spatial Patterns In Fish Assemblages Across Benthic Habitats Along The California Coast As Interpreted From Video Lander Surveys, Jacklyn Mohay Oct 2025

Spatial Patterns In Fish Assemblages Across Benthic Habitats Along The California Coast As Interpreted From Video Lander Surveys, Jacklyn Mohay

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Geographic differences in ecological communities often arise due to environmental gradients that influence physiological tolerances, species-specific habitat affinities, and various biological interactions. Fish assemblages in temperate upwelling systems, such as the California Current System (CCS), provide an ideal model system to examine these drivers of community structure. Within the CCS, demersal fish communities are often associated with certain benthic habitats, known as fish-habitat associations. To further explore where species are found in relation to certain habitats and location, I used data collected from analysis of stereo-video landers deployed from 2012-2021 to quantify fish-habitat associations across the California coast from Cordell …

Leveraging After School Programs As Resources To Support Adolescent Health And Wellbeing Within Underserved Communities: A Qualitative Study, Olivia Staples Oct 2025

Leveraging After School Programs As Resources To Support Adolescent Health And Wellbeing Within Underserved Communities: A Qualitative Study, Olivia Staples

Theses and Dissertations

Over the past decade, youth have shown a consistent rise in stress, major depression, anxiety, and suicide, with underserved youth (low-income, minoritized communities) at greatest risk of exposure to chronic stress, related outcomes, and less access to health services (APA, 2017). Afterschool programs (ASPs), which serve as important resources in underserved communities, can be a critical support for youth health and well-being (Afterschool Alliance, 2019). However, few studies have examined ways in which ASPs address the challenges underserved youth face across their ecosystem to promote youth resilience (Jones & Deutsch, 2011). Using qualitative interview data from staff and youth across …
