The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine

The role of chromatin biology and epigenetics in disease progression is gaining increasing recognition. Genes that escape X chromosome inactivation (XCI) can impact neuroinflammation through epigenetic mechanisms. Our previous study has suggested that the X escapee genes Kdm6a and Kdm5c are involved in microglial activation after stroke in aged mice. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We hypothesized that Kdm6a/5c demethylate H3K27Me3/H3K4Me3 in microglia, respectively, and mediate the transcription of interferon regulatory factor 5 (IRF5) and IRF4, leading to microglial pro-inflammatory responses and exacerbated stroke injury. Aged (17–20 months) Kdm6a/5c microglial conditional knockout (CKO) female mice (one allele of the …

Necrobiosis Lipoidica Arising In A Port Wine Stain Treated With Topical Ruxolitinib, Neena Edupuganti, Jay Nguyen, Fahad S. Siddiqui, Victoria Dukharan, Rajiv Nathoo

GME Publications

We present a unique case of necrobiosis lipoidica (NL) arising within a port-wine stain (PWS), which, to our knowledge, has not been previously reported. NL is a rare granulomatous disorder often associated with diabetes mellitus, characterized by chronic inflammation and microvascular dysfunction. PWS, a congenital vascular malformation, results from defective endothelial differentiation and capillary malformation. The coexistence of these conditions suggests a potential link in their pathophysiological mechanisms, including inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and shared signaling pathways such as mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K), and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha. Our patient's NL lesions demonstrated improvement with topical ruxolitinib, a …

Large-scale human genetic studies implicate multiple genes that regulate protein ubiquitination in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). De novo loss-of-function mutations in the gene CULLIN3 (CUL3) are implicated in autism and intellectual disability (ID). CUL3 is an essential component of an E3 ubiquitin ligase complex required for ubiquitination of substrates, often a signal for proteasomal degradation. Homozygous deletion of Cul3 is embryonically lethal. Recent studies show heterozygous deletion of Cul3 results in phenotypes with some face validity for autism in constitutive and conditional Cul3 heterozygotes. To understand the function of Cul3 in late postnatal development and function in the brain, we …

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In the modern age, tuberculosis remains a pressing global health concern. Our study introduces and evaluates the SEITR pandemic TB transmission model, dividing the population into five compartments to explore distinct characteristics relevant to our investigation. Additionally, we delve into the application of fractional calculus. Through the Laplace transform method, we derive series solutions for all compartments, ensuring their existence and uniqueness. We also investigate the reproduction number of the tuberculosis epidemic model, examining how varying contact rates impact disease spread. We apply the predictor-corrector method for the Caputo-Fabrizio fractional derivative to verify the accuracy of our approach. This accurately …

(Si15-120) Exploring Fractional Difference Equations And Their Applications With Mahgoub-Transform, Tharmalingam Gunasekar, Periyasamy Udhayasankar, Prabakaran Raghavendran, Kamalendra Kumar

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

We discuss the introduction and study of the nabla discrete Mahgoub transform along with its defining properties. The transform of fractional sums and fractional differences are derived, demonstrating the applicability of the transform from the computational viewpoint. Employing the transform, fractional difference equations with initial value problems are solved, thereby enhancing the knowledge of their closed forms. As a side-effect of the Mahgoub-transforms, an attractive connection is established, showing that the discrete Mittag-Leffler function acts as the eigenfunction for the Caputo-type fractional difference operator nabla. These results strengthen the core basis for fractional calculus and herald industrial applications in various …

One of these endangered species is the Flattened Musk Turtle (FMT), only found in the Black Warrior River Drainage of Alabama above the Fall Line. The FMT is listed as “Threatened” by the United State Fish and Wildlife Service under the Endangered Species Act and is considered Critically Endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature due to drastic declines in populations since the 1980s. Declines have been attributed to several factors, including …

Assessing Expected Cover Of Invasive Flora Species Near Corridor Features By Distance, Joshua G. Logan Oct 2025

Assessing Expected Cover Of Invasive Flora Species Near Corridor Features By Distance, Joshua G. Logan

Theses

Fragmentation of landscapes has been a growing topic of interest within scientific literature over the past several decades, as the way we as humans affect our planet becomes more apparent as the years go on. As humans, we have shaped the land and what it contains in immeasurable ways, erasing or forever altering entire natural ecosystems. Chief among the drivers altering these ecosystems is the fragmentation of landscapes, which can have all kinds of effects on natural ecosystems, from limiting nutrient transport to providing easier access for invasives to permeate throughout a landscape. Corridors are significant areas of interest regarding …

Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 38. Alfred Russel Wallace's "Revolt Of Democracy": A Critical Analysis Of Early 20th Century Labor Theory And Its Contemporary Relevance, James Williams, Charles H. Smith Editor

Faculty/Staff Personal Papers

This article examines Alfred Russel Wallace’s political treatise The Revolt of Democracy (1913), analyzing his theoretical framework for addressing labor unrest and economic inequality in early 20th-century Britain. Wallace's work presents a comprehensive critique of competitive capitalism and proposes systematic government intervention to address structural poverty. Through close textual analysis and comparison with contemporary UK labor conditions, this study evaluates the enduring relevance of Wallace's economic theories and policy prescriptions. The analysis reveals significant continuities between early 20th-century and contemporary debates about living wages, government employment standards, and wealth redistribution, while highlighting both the prescience and limitations of Wallace’s analytical …

Bone Mineral Density Of Willow Ptarmigan (Lagopus Lagopus) As A Potential Taphonomic Factor In Skeletal Part Attrition, Frank J. Dirrigl Jr., Samuel R. Buchanan

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences Faculty Publications

Agents of taphonomy can bias skeletal parts and the frequency of bones in archaeological sites. An important factor to consider is the possible effect of bone density-mediated attrition on archaeornithological assemblages. We scanned willow ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus) specimens using a Lunar iDXA and an enCcore small animal body add-on to develop a rank-order scheme based on the volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) of skeletal parts. Our results identified the tibiotarsus and femur to be the least dense bones, while carpometacarpus, 3rd digit, and coracoid were the densest. This novel scheme allowed us to evaluate a sample of 22 …

Oceanographic Drivers Of Recruitment And Reproductive Potential Of Gopher Rockfish (Sebastes Carnatus) – Historical Variability And Future Projections Under Climate Change, Madison Sandquist

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Anticipating climate-change impacts on fisheries requires understanding how marine species respond to future ocean conditions. The productivity and abundance of fish populations are largely shaped by the survival of early life stages, which are highly sensitive to ocean conditions. Variation in ocean conditions can influence early stages of fish species by influencing reproductive output of adults and/or larval health, survival, and retention. The goal of this study was to understand how oceanographic variables can impact reproduction and recruitment of a nearshore rockfish species, gopher rockfish (Sebastes carnatus), helping to forecast potential climate change impacts on the population. I assessed historical …
