Model-Based Assessment Of Ocean Monitoring Temporal And Spatial Resolution Requirements For Acoustic Operations, William K. Stevens, Martin Siderius
Model-Based Assessment Of Ocean Monitoring Temporal And Spatial Resolution Requirements For Acoustic Operations, William K. Stevens, Martin Siderius
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Understanding present and future ocean conditions is essential for the effective planning and execution of a wide range of naval and commercial acoustic operations. The four-dimensional structure of temperature and salinity}from the ocean surface to the seabed}is a critical factor influencing acoustic transmission properties. Modern numerical ocean modeling systems consist of three primary components: ocean observations, a numerical forecasting model, and a data assimilation system. Of the tens of millions of global ocean observations assimilated daily, the majority derive from satellite-based surface measurements. In stark contrast, subsurface water column measurements number only in the thousands per day. This disparity highlights …

Versatile Nitration Of Bodipy Dyes Using No₂Bf₄: Effects Of Nitro Substituents On Spectroscopic And Self-Assembly Properties, Caroline Sarange Gwaro
LSU Master's Theses
This study explores the regioselective nitration of BODIPY dyes at the 2, 3- and 2,6-positions using nitronium tetrafluoroborate (NO₂BF₄), offering a high-yielding and mild synthetic route. The introduction of nitro groups significantly alters the dyes’ photophysical and self-assembly properties. Mono-nitrated BODIPYs exhibit hypsochromic shifts in absorption and emission spectra, increased dipole moments, enhanced Stokes shifts, and reduced molar absorptivity. In contrast, di-nitrated analogs show bathochromic shifts and decreased dipole moments in both ground and excited states. Spectroscopic characterization was performed using UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Self-assembly behavior was investigated in polar (acetonitrile) and …

Mempertanyakan Keyakinan Pada Kemampuan Artificial Intelligence Khususnya Strong Ai: Sebuah Perspektif Realis Kritis, Meutia Irina Mukhlis
Multikultura
Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most popular albeit divisive topics up for debate today. On the one hand, die-hard proponents of AI believe that AI may one day come close to possessing human-level intelligence or even supersedes it (this view of AI is called strong AI) while on the other, some seem unconvinced of the promises of strong AI and prefer to believe in a weaker form of AI, an AI that might be able to do some functions humans assign to them or simulate basic level of human intelligence. This paper leans more toward the latter’s view. …
Exploring Local Residents’ Response To Ecological Resettlement Policy: A Tpb-Based Study In Zhalong National Nature Reserve, Zhi Wang
Double Helix Methodology
Studies on residents' ecological conservation behaviors primarily focus on personal and socio-economic factors, neglecting crucial psychological aspects like intentions and perceptions. A Guided Ungrading Example For Independent Research Projects In An Upper-Division Ecosystem Ecology Stem Course, Christine S. O'Connell
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
Ungrading is a pedagogical approach that, in some iterations, emphasizes formative feedback and student self-assessment over traditional point-based grading. While increasingly popular in the humanities and social sciences, ungrading remains uncommon in STEM courses, particularly those that are content-intensive. This article presents a structured example of ungrading implemented in an upper-division ecosystem ecology course through a 7-week independent research project. Students used public or previously collected ecological data to investigate a scientific question, culminating in a short-format, manuscript-style research paper and a 10 min oral presentation. The project was scaffolded with multiple checkpoints, including structured reflections, peer review, and instructor …

Redox-active organic matter (RAOM) reduction is an important control on methane production in northern peatlands, but it is unclear how global climate change will affect RAOM reduction. We investigated the effects of water-table levels on RAOM reduction by leveraging a long-term water-table manipulation experiment in an Alaskan fen, which includes Lowered and Raised treatment plots relative to a Control. Common substrate peat was incubated in each plot during one summer of experimental manipulation and another summer of site-wide flooding. During experimental manipulation, common substrate RAOM was more reduced in the Raised plot than the Lowered plot at both 10–20 cm …

The Mystery Of Choromytilus Chorus: Factors Affecting The Apparent Demise Of A Culturally Important Mollusk Along Western South America, Shelia Pozorski, Thomas Pozorski
Anthropology Faculty Publications
Choromytilus chorus virtually vanished from most Peruvian archaeological sites about 1000 BC. This species’ disappearance is significant because Choromytilus chorus is one of the most recognizable mollusks in the archaeological remains of coastal Peru because of its large size and rich purple color. In this study we investigate the choro mussel, which was a highly valued food source, a raw material for fishhooks and other fishing gear, and a special ritual item in prehistoric times. We look at inconsistencies in reports of its range, habitat, and ecology to explore reasons for the major shift southward of the species' northern limits …

Embryonic Transcription Factors (TFs) are often reactivated in cancer, driving developmental gene programs that support phenotypic plasticity. Metabolic adaptation fuels this plasticity by supplying energy and molecular building blocks for growth. RUNX2, the master regulator of bone morphogenesis, is ectopically expressed in epithelial cancer, promoting metastasis through trans-differentiation processes like Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) and osteomimicry. By combining omics data with functional validation, we demonstrated that RUNX2 drives cancer cell metabolic rewiring by repressing mitochondrial respiration while promoting anabolic processes. We showed that RUNX2 upregulates key genes of lipid biosynthesis by regulating and cooperating with SREBP1. In vivo expression analysis in …

Trained immunity is a long-term functional reprogramming of innate cells that allows for the formation of immune memory akin to adaptive responses, but with a more rapid nonspecific response. We recently identified an anti-inflammatory trained immunity response, termed trained tolerogenic immunity (TTI), induced by low virulence Candida dubliniensis, that protects against acute lethal polymicrobial sepsis via myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs). Trained immunity and MDSCs arise following hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell (HSPC) expansion in the bone marrow. Here, we show that C. dubliniensis induces inoculum-dependent protection and HSPC expansion, whereas depletion of HSPCs following C. dubliniensis immunization abrogates protection. We …

Variants in SLC6A1 result in a rare neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by a variable clinical presentation of symptoms including developmental delay, epilepsy, motor dysfunction, and autism spectrum disorder. SLC6A1 haploinsufficiency has been confirmed as the predominant pathway of SLC6A1-related neurodevelopmental disorder (SLC6A1-NDD); however, the molecular mechanism underlying the variable clinical presentation remains unclear. Here, through work of the Undiagnosed Diseases Network, we identify an individual with an inherited p.A334S variant of uncertain significance. To resolve this variant and better understand the variable expressivity associated with SLC6A1, we assess the phenotypes of the proband in comparison with a cohort of 13 individuals …

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most prevalent malignancies globally and is the leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide. Advanced and metastatic CRC is associated with poor prognosis due to high rates of metastases and resistance to standard therapies. With the advent of next-generation sequencing, there has been increased interest in molecularly targeted treatments. One such molecular target is the PIK3CA gene, a key component of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway, which has been linked to promoting tumor survival and proliferation in cancer cell populations. PIK3CA mutations are detected in approximately 10–20% of CRC cases. The presence of these …

Narratives Of Vietnamese Teachers: Exploring Existential Givens Of Freedom, Meaning, And Isolation, Huy D. Nguyen
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Drawing on Yalom’s framework of existential givens, this study explores how Vietnamese teachers experience existential freedom, existential isolation, and life meaningfulness. The notion of experience serves as the conceptual and interpretive foundation through which participants articulate these existential dimensions. Three participants were selected, and data were collected from online journal entries, vignette responses, and semi-structured interviews. Methodologically, it adopts intuitive inquiry as both conceptual lens and analytic process, integrating multiple modes of knowing and embodied understanding to explore how teachers imagine, experience, and interpret their work. To deepen interpretation, narrative structuring was incorporated to reveal the emotional and relational textures …
Detection Of Sweet Potato Feathery Mottle Virus Infection Via Remote Hyperspectral Imaging, Clayton Blake
Detection Of Sweet Potato Feathery Mottle Virus Infection Via Remote Hyperspectral Imaging, Clayton Blake
LSU Master's Theses
In sweetpotato, global production exceeds 90 million tons annually, yet yields are threatened by numerous pathogens, including the potyvirus sweet potato feathery mottle virus (SPFMV). Virus infections can reduce yields by 25–40%, but surveillance is hampered by asymptomatic infections and the labor-intensive nature of detection. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI), combined with machine learning (ML), offers a promising pathway to scalable, non-destructive detection; however, studies focused on virus infection in sweetpotato remain limited.
This study demonstrates the feasibility of ML-enabled HSI for SPFMV detection under greenhouse conditions via a curated spectral library of two commercial cultivars, 'Beauregard' and 'Orleans', and the biological …
