Recovery As Relational Care: Integrating Policy, Education, And Community Resilience In Rural Appalachia, Jon Dance, Josh Thompson

The Rural Educator

Despite national media attention and significant policy investment, substance use epidemics continue to impact Central Appalachia. Inequities affecting rural communities and persistent stigma create significant barriers to well-being and recovery. Recovery, however, is more than a healthcare issue; it is a relational and community-rooted process that must involve education, policy, and care. In this article, we reframe deficit-oriented conceptions of recovery to highlight the vital role of relational care and community collaboration in promoting wellness in rural Appalachia. We offer the Community Resiliency Model (CRM) as a practical, evidence-informed strategy to foster emotional regulation, coregulation, and community resilience. We call …

3d Printed Microscopes As A Low-Cost Alternative To Conventional Light Microscopes, Aidan W. Donelan, Hunter N. Lemer, Sudeshna Roy, Nicholas C. Butzin Nov 2025

3d Printed Microscopes As A Low-Cost Alternative To Conventional Light Microscopes, Aidan W. Donelan, Hunter N. Lemer, Sudeshna Roy, Nicholas C. Butzin

iLEARN Teaching Resources

Many K-12 schools function on limited budgets in their science departments, making it difficult to acquire, maintain, and update microscopes. While modern light microscopes are often complex, expensive, and require specialized training, they are based on simple principles of light. Microscopes enable us to observe objects too small for the naked eye and reveal intricate details. Introducing affordable, easy-to-use microscope adaptations early in education helps foster a deeper understanding of science and encourages young students to pursue STEM fields. Using 3D printing, we developed two innovative microscope models and two lesson plans. Lesson 1: Using a smartphone microscope to visualize …

Time To Pay For Nature-Based Solutions, Tamar Ron Nov 2025

Time To Pay For Nature-Based Solutions, Tamar Ron

New England Journal of Public Policy

Viewing nature as ‘common goods’ results in under-valuating of natural capital and assets. As a consequence, budget allocations for environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, and climate action are considerably insufficient. Another result is opting for unsustainable and destructive land and resource uses, which provide immediate and tangible monetary revenues. This article emphasizes the need to valuate natural assets and nature-based solutions (NBS), and their contribution. It further explores optional solutions, including national and global policy, and legislative and taxing instruments, to translate this value into substantive tangible financing for coordinated and synergetic approaches to address the critical global climate and biodiversity …

Knockout Of Perilipin-2 In Microglia Alters Lipid Droplet Accumulation And Response To Alzheimer’S Disease Stimuli, Isaiah O. Stephens, Lance A. Johnson

Physiology Faculty Publications

Highlights: What are the main findings? Knockout of Plin2 in microglia reduces lipid droplet burden, while enhancing phagocytic clearance capacity. Transcriptomic, bioenergetic, and lipidomic analyses reveal that loss of Plin2 reprograms microglial metabolism toward reduced TAG storage and improved mitochondrial resilience. What are the implications of the main findings? Plin2 serves as a key regulator of microglial lipid droplet stability, metabolic flexibility, and immune function under Alzheimer’s-relevant stressors. Targeting Plin2 may represent a therapeutic strategy to alleviate lipid droplet-driven dysfunction and restore microglial performance in aging and neurodegeneration. Lipid droplets (LDs) are emerging as key regulators of metabolism and inflammation, …

Cop30: A Climate Overview, Padraig O'Malley

New England Journal of Public Policy

This overview situates the accelerating climate crisis at a pivotal historical moment, as global emissions and political inaction converge ahead of COP30 in Belém, Brazil. Increasing heat is driving planetary instability, with cascading impacts such as sea level rise, droughts, wildfires, disease emergence, and permafrost thaw.

Despite pledges under the Paris Agreement and subsequent Glasgow Pact, most nations are far off track: 2024 marked the hottest year in recorded history, CO₂ reached 429 ppm by mid-2025, and fossil fuel combustion continues to rise. Under the Trump administration, the United States withdrew again from the Paris Agreement, dismantled environmental agencies, and …

From Margins To Mandates: The Ocean’S Emerging Role In Climate Law And Policy, Kilaparti Ramakrishna

New England Journal of Public Policy

For much of modern history, the ocean was treated as a boundless resource rather than as a living system central to planetary climate stability. Scientific advances over the past two decades have revealed the ocean’s indispensable role in regulating climate by absorbing more than 90 percent of excess heat and nearly a third of anthropogenic carbon dioxide. Yet this buffering capacity is eroding as unchecked greenhouse gas emissions drive warming, acidification, and sea level rise. Protecting ocean health has therefore become inseparable from stabilizing the climate, making ocean stewardship and climate action an indivisible imperative.

This article traces the evolution …

Policy Aspects Of Mitigation And Adaptation To Glacier Melt, José Romero Nov 2025

Policy Aspects Of Mitigation And Adaptation To Glacier Melt, José Romero

New England Journal of Public Policy

Global warming is causing irreversible glacier retreat. This phenomenon will have major consequences for the environment and human systems, particularly in terms of water availability, increased natural hazards, slope and valley stability, hydroelectric power generation, tourism, culture, and local lifestyles. Only a drastic and rapid reduction in greenhouse gas emissions could slow this phenomenon, but this reduction is slow in coming. Countries are experimenting with different approaches to mitigate ice melt, including integrated management of glacial and periglacial ecosystems and the local application of technologies. These technologies raise scientific questions about their effectiveness in a warming climate, and policy questions, …

The small GTPase CDC42 promotes axon growth through actin filament polymerization and this growth is driven by axonal localization of the mRNA encoding the prenylated CDC42 isoform (Prenyl-Cdc42). Here, we show that axonal Prenyl-Cdc42 mRNA levels and the mRNA's translation are decreased by growth-inhibiting stimulation and increased by growth-promoting stimulation. In contrast, axonal RhoA mRNA transport and translation are increased by growth-inhibiting but unaffected by growth-promoting stimuli. Localized increase in KHSRP in response to growth inhibitory stimulation, through elevation of intracellular Ca2+, promotes decrease in axonal levels of Prenyl-Cdc42 mRNA. Distinct 3'UTR motifs regulate transport and axonal levels of Prenyl-Cdc42 …

Modeling Social Evolution, Involution, And Indeterminacy: A Neutrosophic-Cultural Algorithm Approach, Antonios Paraskevas, Florentin Smarandache

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

Neutrosophic Sociology, or Neutrosociology, is the study of sociology using neutrosophic scientific methods for understanding the dynamics of social systems within complex environments. When a social change occurs, the society evolves with respect to some parameters, regresses with respect to others, and remains the same or experiences an unclear change (indeterminacy) with respect to another set of parameters. This mirrors neutrosophic logic: true (), neutral or indeterminate (ℐ), and false (ℱ). The main concept of cultural algorithms is a generalization of the idea that evolution has at its base both racial learning within species and social learning within human societies. …

Consumers Stabilize Grassland Ecosystem Functions By Destabilizing Belowground Communities Under Abiotic Stress, Jane M. Lucas, Michelle L. Budny, Nathan P. Lemoine

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Consumers play a critical role in mediating plant and ecosystem responses to abiotic stress, yet their influence on belowground processes under changing environmental conditions remains underexplored. Insect consumers are vital components of grassland ecosystems that can shape ecosystem function and stability by mitigating how plant and microbial communities respond to abiotic stress, like drought. This study investigates how small-bodied consumers influence the magnitude and stability of grassland belowground functions across gradients of abiotic stress. We conducted a fully factorial field experiment manipulating consumer presence and induced drought over a growing season. Our results reveal that the presence of consumers stabilizes …

We Are Here Because Of Them: Co-Creating A Native Cemetery Memorial At Mission Santa Clara, Lee M. Panich, Amy J. Lueck, Lauren Baines, Isabella ‘Amne Gomez

Faculty Publications

Tens of thousands of Native individuals perished in California’s twenty-one Franciscan missions that operated from the 1760s into the 1840s, but most public interpretive programs gloss over their lives and the cemeteries where they are interred. This has historically been the case at Mission Santa Clara, on the campus of Santa Clara University. In this article, we reflect on the process of co-creating an interactive memorial designed to honor the Native people buried in two colonial-era cemeteries related to the mission and link their lives to the descendant community today. Importantly, the co-creation process helped strengthen relationships in numerous directions, …

Assessing the spatial distribution of invasive species is a critical component for establishing baselines to examine the rate of spread, documenting key areas where negative impacts on ecosystems can be mitigated, and developing sustainable management strategies. Callery pear (Pyrus calleryana Decne.; PC) is a rapidly spreading invasive woody plant species in the eastern United States (U.S.). The incursion of these wild-type trees into urban, peri-urban, and rural landscapes, which have escaped from transplanted clonal cultivars, poses complex management challenges for land managers and hampers ecosystem function by competing with native plant species and altering the forest environment. We integrated …

The Relationship Of St6gal1 With Clinicopathological And Prognostic Factors In Breast Carcinomas, Ethem Ömeroğlu, Abdülhalim Serden Ay, Tuğba Günler, İlknur Küçükosmanoğlu, Sümeyye Kozacıoğlu

Saudi Medical Journal

Objectives: To investigate the association of β-galactoside α2-6 sialyltransferase 1 (ST6GAL1) expression with hormone receptor (HR), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), and other clinicopathological parameters, including histological grade, stage, lymphovascular invasion, perineural invasion, and survival in breast carcinomas (BCs). Methods: This study included 85 patients who had undergone surgery for breast cancer (BC). The associations of HR, HER2 status, and histopathologic tumor characteristics with immunohistochemical expression of ST6GAL1 were analyzed. Results: The majority (48 [56.5%]) of patients were in the T2 stage, and no association was seen between staging and ST6GAL1 ( p <0.05). Further, 44 (54.2%) patients were HR positive, and most of them exhibited high ST6GAL1 levels ( p =0.001), whereas 44 (51.8%) were HER2 negative, and most of them demonstrated low ST6GAL1 levels ( p =0.007). Ki-67 of ≥20% was observed in 55 (64.7%) and <20% in 30 (35.3%) patients. Most of those with high Ki-67 demonstrated low-grade STLGAL1 expression; however, no correlation was detected between the two values ( p =0.378). High and low ST6GAL1 expressions were observed in 39 (45.9%) and 46 (54.1%) cases, respectively. Conclusion: This research is one of the first studies to use ST6GAL1 in preoperative biopsies of patients not scheduled for neoadjuvant treatment. This study revealed highly significant associations of ST6GAL1 expression with HR, HER2, and molecular subtyping. Future studies are recommended to clarify the possible role of ST6GAL1 in resistance to HR and HER2-targeted and other chemotherapeutic agents in BCs.
