This study investigates the potential of few-layered conductive graphene foams as 3D platforms for the electrical transdifferentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into Schwann cell (SC)-like phenotypes for peripheral nerve injury (PNI) treatment. The 3D graphene foams (3D-GF) are cytocompatible with MSCs and created a favorable microenvironment for the cells to attach, grow, proliferate, and transdifferentiate. We demonstrated that MSCs cultured within 3D-GF can be transdifferentiated into SC-like phenotypes using the synergistic effects of electrical stimulation and 3D porous and conductive structure. Our immunocytochemistry and gene expression analyses showed the expression of Schwann cell markers and enhanced secretion of growth …

Preventable Emergency Department Utilization Among Patients With Foster Care History Compared To Patients Without Foster Care History, Lauren Malthaner, Jill Mcleigh, Gregory Knell, Katelyn Jetelina, Folefac Atem, Sarah Messiah Nov 2025

Preventable Emergency Department Utilization Among Patients With Foster Care History Compared To Patients Without Foster Care History, Lauren Malthaner, Jill Mcleigh, Gregory Knell, Katelyn Jetelina, Folefac Atem, Sarah Messiah

Health Status, Outcomes, and Literacy and Healthcare Utilization

Emergency department (ED) utilization for preventable reasons by patients with foster care history is unexplored. Medical records of ED encounters from primary care patients were pulled from a southwestern children's hospital system. Necessity of ED encounter was categorized using the New York University- ED Algorithm into emergent, intermediate, or non-emergent. Associations were explored at the encounter- and patient-level. Partial proportional logistic models generated odds of preventable (i.e., intermediate or nonemergent) ED utilization among encounters, and Poisson models determined incidence of preventable ED use at the patient level. Findings suggested that when a patient with history in foster care used the …

The Use Of Science In Climate Governance: Bridging Diplomacy, Public Engagement, And Negotiation Interfaces, Janice Golding Nov 2025

The Use Of Science In Climate Governance: Bridging Diplomacy, Public Engagement, And Negotiation Interfaces, Janice Golding

New England Journal of Public Policy

Climate science appears to have come of age, marked by methodological rigor, interdisciplinary integration, and broad consensus. Negotiators in climate multilateralism navigate a complex terrain shaped by politics, economics, and social dynamics, where science may be treated as an insouciant factor in negotiation strategies. As climate change intensifies beyond the 1.5°C threshold, there is a growing risk that science will become even more marginalized in global governance. This could drown out the scientific authority of mandated institutions and create a disconnect between negotiation processes and the evolving role of science, undermining science’s potential to offer renewed relevance and solutions. Urgent …

Vatican Kiseki Chousakan As Philosophy Of Religion: The Intersections Of Faith, Science, And Philosophy In An Anime Adaptation, Carl Jayson D. Hernandez Nov 2025

Vatican Kiseki Chousakan As Philosophy Of Religion: The Intersections Of Faith, Science, And Philosophy In An Anime Adaptation, Carl Jayson D. Hernandez

Philosophy Department Faculty Publications

Ideas concerning religion are often communicated through popular media, such as anime. One of the anime adaptations that explicitly engages the intersections of religion, science, and philosophy is Vatican Kiseki Chousakan. This anime adaptation centers on a special unit from the Vatican that verifies miraculous phenomena worldwide. In this study, I reflect on how the anime representation communicates religious ideas about miracles, prophecies, and other spiritual matters to its viewers. This critical reflection reveals how anime promotes a philosophical view centered on the complementary relationship between religion and science. With these in mind, this study proceeds as follows. The first …

Phylogenetic Comparative Vocal Evolution, Casper W. Buchanan Nov 2025

Phylogenetic Comparative Vocal Evolution, Casper W. Buchanan

Master's Theses

Vocal learning is a trait unique to humans, bats, cetaceans, primates, and birds (Jarvis & Nottebohm, 1997; McComb & Semple, 2005; Wilbrecht & Nottebohm, 2003). Although there has been extensive research on vocal learning in songbirds, parrots are an even closer proxy to human learning, as they are social, intelligent, and lifelong learners, with some having repertoires of over 300 sounds (Benedict et al., 2022; Péron et al., 2011; Thomsen et al., 2019; Toft & Wright, 2015). Elevated vocal learning can be attributed to the need for parrots to have strong communication skills through the sharing of information over foraging, …

Thalamocortical Structural Covariation Networks Are Related To Familial Risk For Schizophrenia In The Context Of Lower Nuclei Volume Estimates In Patients: An Enigma Study, Annalisa Lella, Linda A. Background

Structural brain differences in the thalamus and the cortex have been widely reported in schizophrenia (SCZ) relative to neurotypical control individuals (NCs). Most previous studies examined the thalamusas a whole as a single region of interest. In addition, findings in individuals at familial high risk for SCZ (FHRs) remain inconclusive. Here, we investigated whether local and network-wide thalamic-related structural alterations vary as a function of familial risk for SCZ.

Methods

Structural magnetic resonance imaging scans were obtained from 5197 participants (NC, n = 3409; FHR, n = 257; SCZ, n = 1531) across 32 cross-sectional samples within the …

Stump The Professor: A Classroom Game To Model Metacognition And Normalize Mistakes In Biology Education, Khayriyyah Mohd Hanafiah, Jonathan I. Millen

Biology Faculty/Staff Publications

Autonomy, competence, and relatedness are key elements under the self-determination theory (SDT) for student motivation in learning. Stump the Professor (STP) is a low-prep activity designed to model metacognition, normalize the experience of being incorrect, and encourage student participation in undergraduate biology classrooms. By empowering students to generate their own questions, STP promotes autonomy and gives students agency to shape classroom dialog. Observing the instructor verbally reason through uncertainty highlights strategies of problem-solving which model metacognition and competence. Normalizing mistakes within a supportive, low-stakes environment fosters relatedness as students perceive the classroom as a collaborative and psychologically safe place. In …

Identity, Cultural Frameworks, And Belongingness Among Emerging Adults In The Uae, Mohammad Almalik, Alaa Itani, Brien Ashdown, Haneen Maree, Neda Fadavi Nov 2025

Identity, Cultural Frameworks, And Belongingness Among Emerging Adults In The Uae, Mohammad Almalik, Alaa Itani, Brien Ashdown, Haneen Maree, Neda Fadavi

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Emerging adulthood (EA) is characterized as a developmental stage that entails both uncertainty and identity development. However, the experience of EAs varies based on the culture they come from and how much their culture allows flexibility for identity exploration. Our study explores the interplay between cultural frameworks, identity, and non-belonging among a sample of EAs in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which presents an interesting case due to its rich multicultural society, with often conflicting cultural expectations. Using qualitative data from 255 culturally diverse participants aged 18-24 (M = 19.53, SD = 1.43), of whom 166 were women (65.1%) and …
