Archaeoparasitology has been conducted in the Southwest for 57 years. In the first decade of the period, two pictures of parasitism emerged. Analysis of compressed organic sediments from a latrine at Elden Pueblo presented a spectrum of geohelminths not different from medieval Europe. These findings contrast pronouncedly with an analysis of coprolites from all other studies that show consistent pinworm parasitism at other sites in the Southwest. We summarize the paleoepidemiological bases for these contrasting phenomena.

Purpose The Fitzpatrick Scale (FS), originally developed to dose photochemotherapy in Caucasian skin, has become widely adopted for skin color categorization. It originally included types I-IV, with types V-VI added later for darker skin. The FS was designed for UV radiation reactivity assessment. However, it is increasingly used as a proxy for objective skin color classification, despite being based on a subjective questionnaire. Individual Typology Angle (ITA), a validated colorimetric measurement, presents a potential alternative. Introduction: Utilization of the Fitzpatrick scale to describe skin color does not adequately account for variations in pigmentation that are reflective of skin color characteristics of persons from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds. This study aims to create a better way to describe skin color. Methods: We developed an 11-point color scale. This Skin Color Scale (SCS) was reproduced onto a physical card that could be placed onto a research participant’s inner arms for independent scale interpretation. In this first report of endoparasites from endemic land-mammals of the Galápagos Islands, we describe a new species of cestode of the genus Raillietina (Cyclophyllidea: Davaineidae) from a species of Nesoryzomys and summarize the extent of helminth parasitism in both oryzomyine endemics and introduced species of Rattus. Up to the current time, no helminth parasites have been reported from rodents of the Galápagos, and little work has yet been done describing and synthesizing Galápagos parasite diversity. Introduction: High-consequence infectious diseases (HCIDs) such as Ebola virus disease (EVD) and other viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHFs) require interdisciplinary teamwork and collaboration, communication, and adherence to protocols in order to safely transport patients between agencies. Despite national preparedness efforts, standardized transport protocols for HCID patients remain limited and inconsistently applied nationally. High-risk pregnancies often face unique challenges when it comes to breastfeeding, yet few antenatal interventions specifically target this population. This quality improvement project aimed to improve breastfeeding knowledge, confidence, and attitudes among high-risk pregnant individuals through a brief educational intervention. Ten participants between 33 and 36 weeks gestation with diagnoses including GDM, gestational hypertension, multiple gestations and IVF pregnancies were recruited from an outpatient maternal-fetal medicine clinic. A printed educational brochure and a brief in-person teaching session were provided. Participants completed pre- and post-intervention surveys assessing their knowledge, perceived support, and attitudes toward breastfeeding. Background: Preeclampsia (PreE) is a major concern for prenatal care providers treating pregnant patients due to the potentially fatal risks associated with the disorder for both the patient and the fetus. Evidence suggests that recommending low-dose aspirin (LDA) screening and prescribing can reduce PreE risk; however, this practice is often overlooked during new and repeat prenatal visits.

Background: Longitudinal measures of viral load (VL) are critical in monitoring the HIV status. While multiple lab indicators exist for monitoring measures of VL, research on clustering historical/longitudinal VL measures is limited. Analyzing longitudinal VL patterns rather than aggregated measures offers deeper insights into HIV status. This study uses functional data clustering to classify longitudinal VL patterns and characterize each cluster by demographics, comorbidities, social behaviors, and CD4 count.

Objective. BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) perinatal patients often face systemic, cultural, and logistical barriers to accessing mental health care during pregnancy and postpartum. These challenges contribute to disparities in outcomes, yet patient perspectives remain underrepresented in community health settings. This essay interrogates Frankfurt School “racket theory.” While sympathetic to its claim that the most pervasive form of hegemony is the hierarchical and authoritarian group, the paper explores the School’s apparent blind spot in underestimating the crime family’s resurgent significance (e.g., the Trumps or culture industry sagas from The Godfather to Ozark). Early racket theory was limited by Horkheimer’s intensified version of Hegel’s concept of the modern family, its nuclear form and early dissolution. A brief genealogy of the US crime film—from early 1930s individual rogue gangsters to the present—confirms the need to rethink this aspect of racket theory.

Bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) may be a problematic weed within zoysiagrass (Zoysia spp.) swards across its entire range. The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of the herbicide safener metcamifen + trifloxysulfuron-sodium, in conjunction with fluazifop-P-butyl, at removing bermudagrass from zoysiagrass and how varying levels of treatment affected bermudagrass control and zoysiagrass tolerance. Field studies tested rates of metcamifen + trifloxysulfuron-sodium applied with fluazifop-P-butyl compared to treatments of fluazifop alone and fenoxaprop with triclopyr. Background: Demands of caregivers of persons living with dementia (PLWD) are often influenced by the context of their caregiving situation. This study examines common and unique factors associated with caregiving burden in terms of task time and task difficulty among paid and unpaid caregivers of PLWD. Methods: Cross-sectional baseline survey data were analyzed from 107 paid and unpaid caregivers of PLWD participating in a larger NIH-funded study assessing the feasibility of using a novel in-situ sensor system.
