Quantification Of Auxin-Cytokinin Response During Primary Root And Lateral Root Development In Common Bean, Gurdeep Singh Jan 2025

Quantification Of Auxin-Cytokinin Response During Primary Root And Lateral Root Development In Common Bean, Gurdeep Singh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Roots support water and nutrient uptake, anchorage, and soil interactions through continuous growth at the primary root tip (PRT). In common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), new cells are produced in an open root apical meristem and subsequently elongate in the elongation zone, and together these processes drive root tip progression through the soil. Lateral roots (LRs) arise in the differentiation zone, where pairs of pericycle founder cells dedifferentiate, divide asymmetrically, and form lateral root primordia (LRP) that pass through defined developmental stages before emergence. Auxin and cytokinin (CK) are central regulators of both primary root growth and LR development, yet their …

Programming Carcass Composition Through Gestational Nutrition, Sydni Elise Borders Jan 2025

Programming Carcass Composition Through Gestational Nutrition, Sydni Elise Borders

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of maternal nutrient restriction during mid-gestation on the performance of the dam, feeding performance, carcass composition, and genetic expression in the offspring. Cows (n = 46) were randomly assigned to one of two treatments based on global nutrient intake: 1) fed to achieve and/or maintain a BCS of 5 or 6 (Positive Energy Status [PES]; n = 24) or 2) fed to lose one BCS during 99 days of mid-gestation (Negative Energy Status [NES]; n = 22). Cows in NES had greater decreases (P < 0.05) in body fat stores and muscle mass, elevated NEFA concentrations, and displayed decreased (P < 0.05) DMI, HP, and GHG emissions. There were no differences in milk components or volume produced between treatments (P > 0.05). There were no differences in …

Electrical Homeostasis Of The Inner Mitochondrial Membrane Potential, Peyman Fahimi, Lázaro A. M. Castanedo, P. Thomas Vernier, Cherif F. Matta Jan 2025

Electrical Homeostasis Of The Inner Mitochondrial Membrane Potential, Peyman Fahimi, Lázaro A. M. Castanedo, P. Thomas Vernier, Cherif F. Matta

Bioelectrics Publications

The electric potential across the inner mitochondrial membrane must be maintained within certain bounds for the proper functioning of the cell. A feedback control mechanism for the homeostasis of this membrane potential is proposed whereby an increase in the electric field decreases the rate-limiting steps of the electron transport chain (ETC). An increase in trans-membrane electric field limits the rate of proton pumping to the inter-membrane gap by slowing the ETC reactions and by intrinsically induced electroporation that depolarizes the inner membrane. The proposed feedback mechanism is akin to a Le Chatelier's-type principle of trans-membrane potential feedback control.

How Forest Stand Conditions Influence Whitebark Pine And Clark’S Nutcracker: A Systematic Review, Bryan Mathew Cohen Jan 2025

How Forest Stand Conditions Influence Whitebark Pine And Clark’S Nutcracker: A Systematic Review, Bryan Mathew Cohen

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis), a keystone species of high-elevation ecosystems of western North America, is threatened with extinction due to disease (Blister rust), pests (Mountain pine beetle), and climate change. Regeneration of the species depends nearly exclusively on the seed-caching behavior of Clark’s nutcracker (Nucifraga columbiana, Family Corvidae). Because of this, conservation of whitebark ecosystems requires restoring stand structures that favor nutcrackers. Although there are increasing numbers of studies on the relationship between nutcrackers and whitebark pine, findings have not yet been synthesized, limiting knowledge for application to management. I did a systematic literature review to answer the following questions: …

Optimizing Compression In Venous Leg Ulcers To Improve Wound Healing Rates Through Wound Care Nurse Support: A Quality Improvement Project, Temilola Obisesan Jan 2025

Optimizing Compression In Venous Leg Ulcers To Improve Wound Healing Rates Through Wound Care Nurse Support: A Quality Improvement Project, Temilola Obisesan

DNP Scholarly Projects

BACKGROUND: Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) are the most common lower extremity ulcers, accounting for 75% of chronic leg wounds and affect up to 2% of the population in developing countries. Generally, it has a 1-year recurrence rate of 40-70%. VLUs costs about $11B in the USA and other developed countries annually. Patients with VLUs spend about $7,000 more annually. Compression therapy along with local wound care is the best approach for VLU management, with compression therapy as the gold standard. Currently, compression therapy is underutilized in VLU care. The goal of this QI project is to provide wound nurses who …

Optimizing Electronic Health Record Capability To Provide Mindfulness Education To Oncology Patients Experiencing Anxiety, Cynthia Arcieri Jan 2025

Optimizing Electronic Health Record Capability To Provide Mindfulness Education To Oncology Patients Experiencing Anxiety, Cynthia Arcieri

DNP Scholarly Projects

Background: The impact of a cancer diagnosis is significant. In 2020, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported over 1.6 million new cases of cancer (National Institutes of Health, 2023). Non-traditional approaches to supporting patients should be considered in providing high-quality cancer care. Mindfulness can help reduce stress reactions and may be beneficial for individuals with anxiety (Vinci et al., 2019). To best support patient care in the landscape of mobile health (mHeatlh) technology, it is essential to adopt best practices that promote patient engagement and empowerment.

Purpose: This quality improvement project aimed to provide oncology patients with a cognitive …

Visible Learning: Adapting Primary And Secondary Pedagogical Approaches To Legal Education, Dawn Young Jan 2025

Visible Learning: Adapting Primary And Secondary Pedagogical Approaches To Legal Education, Dawn Young

Faculty Publications & Other Works

As a new generation of students, Generation Z, enter law school, educators must continually adapt and improve to be the most effective in their roles. While traditional teaching methods like Socratic dialogue, the case method, and experiential learning are all valuable to varying degrees, law professors can gain further insight by exploring additional teaching approaches.

As law professors welcome Gen Z to their classrooms, how can they ensure they are adapting to the needs of this cohort? Could gaining an understanding of Gen Z’s prior educational experiences provide law professors with additional insight?

This Article argues that law professors can …

Healthcare Ai's Unlearned Intermediaries, Charlotte A. Tschider

Faculty Publications & Other Works

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (“FDA”), as the largest and one of the most influential federal agencies, plays a significant role informing downstream tort actions, such as product liability claims against medical product manufacturers.  The contours of the relationship between regulatory behavior and tort law are allocated according to congressional act and through judicial interpretation of agency action.  While artificially intelligent medical devices are technically regulated by the FDA, FDA regulatory approaches may not meaningfully reduce the probability of patient injury.  When, despite inadequate ex ante processes, injured plaintiffs cannot recover in tort due to court perceptions of regulatory …

Best Kept Secret: The Hidden Health Costs Of Corporate Confidentiality, Cynthia M. Ho Jan 2025

Best Kept Secret: The Hidden Health Costs Of Corporate Confidentiality, Cynthia M. Ho

Faculty Publications & Other Works

Although patents are well known to negatively impact health when drugs are unaffordable, trade secrets also harm health, and in more ways than patents. Patented drugs harm public health simply by temporarily increasing prices on treatments. Trade secrets, on the other hand, can not only increase treatment costs, but also hide knowledge needed for effective medical treatment. Also, because patents, but not trade secrets, have a limited term, patent health harms clearly terminate while trade secret harms do not. Moreover, the public may not even be fully aware of all trade secret health harms because trade secret information is, by …

A Systematic Review And Taxonomy For Privacy Breach Classification: Trends, Gaps, And Future Directions, Clint Fuchs, John Hastings Jan 2025

A Systematic Review And Taxonomy For Privacy Breach Classification: Trends, Gaps, And Future Directions, Clint Fuchs, John Hastings

Research & Publications

In response to the rising frequency and complexity of data breaches and evolving global privacy regulations, this study presents a comprehensive examination of academic literature on the classification of privacy breaches and violations between 2010-2024. Through a systematic literature review, a corpus of screened studies was assembled and analyzed to identify primary research themes, emerging trends, and gaps in the field. A novel taxonomy is introduced to guide efforts by categorizing research efforts into seven domains: breach classification, report classification, breach detection, threat detection, breach prediction, risk analysis, and threat classification. An analysis reveals that breach classification and detection dominate …

Individual Brainstorming: Exploring The Efficacy Of The Cyclical Divergent To Convergent Innovation Model (Cdcim), Abu Jaed

Psychology Theses - Archive

This thesis explored the adaptation of the Cyclical Divergent to Convergent Innovation Model (CDCIM), a structural model used in group brainstorming settings, to the context of individual brainstorming. The primary objective was to investigate whether this brainstorming model enhances the creative output of individuals in terms of idea quantity, quality (based on novelty and feasibility), and divergence in the final output. The study employed an experimental design involving 174 participants, divided into two conditions: Linear (C1), and CDCIM (C2). Participants were tasked with designing various aspects of a futuristic university. The results showed that participants in the CDCIM condition generated …

The Road Less Traveled: A Pathway Leading To Research At A Primarily Undergraduate Institution, Timothy D. Lash

Faculty Publications – Chemistry

Scholarly activities in primarily undergraduate institutions involve very different challenges from those in major research universities. In this essay, the author discusses how he initiated a research program involving undergraduates at Illinois State University following a number of missteps and false starts. Although undergraduate researchers have much to learn, and the levels of commitment vary considerably, they can nevertheless often make important contributions.
