Increasing Occupational Therapy Student Preparedness For Level Ii Fieldwork Experiences In Hand Therapy, Claire Meyer
Increasing Occupational Therapy Student Preparedness For Level Ii Fieldwork Experiences In Hand Therapy, Claire Meyer
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Background: A level II fieldwork experience is essential within occupational therapy programs as it allows occupational therapy students to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-life practice. Students need to complete level II fieldwork to graduate, become practicing therapists, and grow the field of occupational therapy. However, many practitioners, particularly those specializing in hand therapy, hesitate to accept students for fieldwork placements. Barriers reported by hand therapy practitioners include a lack of student knowledge, preparation, and clinical skills (Short et al., 2017; Valdes et al., 2022). Hand therapy settings' rapid pace and demanding nature require students to …

Occupational therapy practitioners are a key member of the care team due to their profession’s unique view of the person and goal of supporting them in their valued occupations. Occupational therapy practitioners have training in psychosocial and mental health interventions that enable those with mental illness to engage in meaningful everyday activities. Practitioners must be equipped with the current best practice standards to support participants to engage in recovery and wellness through occupation. With the growing need for mental and behavioral services and …
Obituary For The Birth Certificate, Malinda L. Seymore
Obituary For The Birth Certificate, Malinda L. Seymore
SMU Law Review
Have birth certificates outlived their usefulness? Birth certificates establish an individual’s name, identity, age, race, sex and gender, parental authority, and citizenship. In addition, the information collected at the time of birth and reflected on a long-form birth certificate provides data for public health policy, population statistics, internal migration, government planning, and resource allocation. Birth certificates are also the all-access pass to American life, necessary for many functions of modern life: registering a child in school, signing a child up for soccer, getting a driver’s license and passport, enlisting in the military, and applying for government benefits. All of this, …

he 2024 Alabama Supreme Court decision in LePage v. Center for Reproductive Medicine, which declared frozen embryos to be “children,” represents a significant shift in the legal treatment of in vitro fertilization (IVF) in the United States. This Article examines the context, implications, and potential consequences of LePage for family law, tort law, and access to reproductive technologies. The Article analyzes how this shift could impact disputes over embryo disposition, establishment of legal parentage, and liability for fertility clinics. It also explores the decision’s relationship to broader debates about fetal personhood in the wake of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s …
Science Learning Centers In Early Childhood Classrooms, Callie Wright, Isabella Whitmore, Dawnita S. Gallo
Science Learning Centers In Early Childhood Classrooms, Callie Wright, Isabella Whitmore, Dawnita S. Gallo
Essays in Education
This manuscript explores the importance of science centers in an early childhood setting. In constructivism, Piaget (1959) clearly states that learning comes from the active role of children’s understanding of the world around them. When interacting with science-based learning materials in preschool, children learn to ask questions to receive new knowledge. According to Piaget’s Cognitive Development theory, children who are actively engaged in group work develop vocabulary skills, critical thinking, and adequate social skills. While engaging in inquiry-based play in the preschool classroom science center, young children learn to interact with one another and the world around them; growing as …
Interaction Between Structural And Cultural Barriers In Relation To The Mental Health Service Usage Of Latino Young Adults, Mia Rubino
Psychology Honors Papers
The inaccessibility of mental health services among ethnic minority populations is often attributed to neatly categorized “cultural” factors or “structural” factors, as is seen in research regarding underutilization of such services among Latino populations. While these terms seek to provide clarity for complex human experiences, in natural occurrence, cultural identity and societal structure are inextricable from each other, and must be studied as such. The present study sought to examine the possible interaction effects of structural and cultural barriers on the subsequent help-seeking behaviors of Latino young adults in a qualitative investigation. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight individuals of …

Unlocking The Unknown: Exploring Ai Patents, Inventive Step With Cases And Recent Developments, Başak Ayşe Ortak
Asia-Pacific Intellectual Property Management and Innovation Book Series
Artificial intelligence is reshaping the field of patent law in transformative ways, particularly when it comes to the concept of inventive step. For instance, for a patent to be granted, the invention must demonstrate an inventive step, which will be explored here (German Patent Act, § 4; European Patent Convention, art. 56(1)). Furthermore, as artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly involved in technological advancements, figuring out how to apply this criterion to AI patents is becoming more complex. This study looks into the challenges of defining what counts as an inventive step in AI-related inventions and evaluates whether current patent standards …
A Critical Approach To Analyzing And Addressing Worldview-Based Cultural Conflict Between Indigenous Peoples And Western Science In Education And Research, Deborah H. Williams
A Critical Approach To Analyzing And Addressing Worldview-Based Cultural Conflict Between Indigenous Peoples And Western Science In Education And Research, Deborah H. Williams
Sabbatical Projects
Intercultural conflict exists in science education and research, I argue as a result of differences between the Western scientific worldview and the Indigenous worldview. Native Americans are the most underrepresented group in STEM, and this has been the case, in my personal experience for over two decades. Western science is not universal or acultural, Indigenous peoples have their own ways of knowing founded on different philosophical assumptions and recognizing metaphysical phenomena and explanations that are rejected by Western science and the positivist/post-positivist paradigm. Through the power of colonial privilege, scientists, science departments, and science disciplines have been able to erect …

Bioremediation In The Chesapeake Bay: Anthropogenic Ocean Acidification Mitigation In An Interactive Multi-Trophic Ecosystem, Cree Taylor
AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship
Zostera marina is a species of marine macrophyte that has been largely prioritized in past submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) restoration initiatives within the Chesapeake Bay because of its 1) previous abundance, 2) demonstrated carbon burial abilities, and 3) observed ability for meadows of Z. marina to ameliorate low pH conditions. Due to the temperature variability and poor water quality in the Chesapeake Bay, Z. Marina beds have experienced several die-off events with limited capacity for regrowth. Ruppia maritima, an opportunistic species with tolerance to temperature shifts within the bay, may have the potential to maintain SAV coverage in areas …
Evaluating Saliva Based Glucose Testing For Accessible Diabetes Care In Tanzania, Shannon Dhindsa
Evaluating Saliva Based Glucose Testing For Accessible Diabetes Care In Tanzania, Shannon Dhindsa
Public Health Theses
Background: In Tanzania, limited healthcare infrastructure and reliance on invasive diagnostic methods significantly hinder effective diabetes screening and management. Individuals with diabetes often go undetected and have lower immune systems that make them prone to further infectious complications. Thus, properly managing this chronic condition can prevent additional infectious diseases. Salivary glucose testing offers a non-invasive, innovative alternative with the potential to transform the early detection and management of diabetes, especially in resource-constrained settings.
Design: This cross-sectional study, conducted at Muhimbili National Hospital's Diabetes Clinic in Dar es Salaam, evaluates the feasibility of salivary glucose testing using a colorimetric glucose-oxidase-peroxidase point-of-care …
“Born This Way”: An Asexual Perspective On Biological Determinism, Julia Resciniti
“Born This Way”: An Asexual Perspective On Biological Determinism, Julia Resciniti
Student Work
The inclusion of Asexual under the queer umbrella is contentious in of itself. As an asexual (or “ace”) myself, I do not intend to litigate whether asexual people belong under the queer umbrella. Instead, I am more interested in examining asexuality in parallel with the larger queer community. In the fight for social acceptance, the queer community has told several narratives about why and how people are queer. The queer community has embraced “born this way” to say queerness is biologically innate. Recently, there has been some backlash as people view their queer identity as more social than biological. This …
Adopted Into Debt?, Grace Palcic
Adopted Into Debt?, Grace Palcic
Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality
While adoption procedures differ from state to state, every state uses some variation of the best interest of the child standard to determine the outcome of an adoption proceeding. To gather information for the best interest determination, states have created the home study process to investigate prospective adoptive families. A home study allows social workers and/or private adoption agencies to look at the needs of the child, the ability of the parents to care for the child, the existing familial dynamics, the safety of the physical home, the perceived moral character and reputation of the parents, mental and physical health …

Statistical Methods For Investigating Cell-Type Specificity And Genetic Regulation Of Dna Methylation In Complex Traits, Youshu Cheng
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
DNA methylation is one of the most widely studied epigenetic modifications that capture the cumulative effects of environmental exposures and inheritable effects and regulates gene expression. DNA methylation occurs at CpG sites, where the cytosine and guanine bases are connected by a phosphate group. Over the past decades, DNA methylation have been useful resources to understand the etiology and mechanisms of complex diseases. Multiple studies have linked DNA methylation with diseases to identify differentially methylated CpGs that associated with complex traits. In addition, another research direction is to focus on the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with DNA methylation levels, …

Phishing emails accessed on mobile devices present substantial risks to healthcare organizations when employees often operate under high cognitive load and with limited cybersecurity training. Despite widespread security awareness initiatives, healthcare workers continue to engage with phishing content on mobile platforms, posing threats to organizational data. Given the high value of healthcare data and the increasing sophistication of phishing schemes targeting healthcare professionals, there is a pressing need to enhance their ability to recognize phishing indicators on mobile devices.
This study developed and validated a Healthcare Workers Phishing Risk Exposure (HWPRE) taxonomy, designed to classify healthcare workers based on their …
The Pulse And Press Of Change: Consequences Of Shifting Climate Regimes And Extreme Events In Big Sagebrush Plant Communities, Scott Carpenter
The Pulse And Press Of Change: Consequences Of Shifting Climate Regimes And Extreme Events In Big Sagebrush Plant Communities, Scott Carpenter
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Dryland ecosystems cover over 40% of Earth’s terrestrial surface and are critical to both biodiversity and human livelihoods, yet they are increasingly vulnerable to the interacting pressures of climate variability and land use. Effective management of these systems requires a deeper understanding of how chronic pressures and acute disturbances shape plant communities. This dissertation examines the interplay between climate variability, livestock grazing, and plant community dynamics in big sagebrush ecosystems of the Upper Green River Basin, Wyoming. Through three complementary studies, I demonstrate that while livestock grazing influences plant structure, its effects are consistently subordinate to climatic and edaphic factors, …

Reading Motivation And Achievement: Exploring Theories, Strategies, And School Climate Contexts, Andrea L. Esterly
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This literature review examined the intersection of self-efficacy and motivation, and their impact on reading achievement. The analysis demonstrated how motivation and context support and shape students’ reading outcomes. This synthesis of peer-reviewed research (2014–2024) from ERIC, PsycINFO, and JSTOR highlights Self-Determination Theory (SDT) as a lens for understanding reading motivation through competence, autonomy, and relatedness. Evidence shows that fluency strategies (prosody, repeated reading, and arts integration) enhance pacing, comprehension, and engagement, while supportive school climates (characterized by safety, teaching, and relationships) further sustain motivation. The evidence underscores the importance of integrating motivational supports, fluency instruction, and student-centered practices to …
Tau-Connectome Predictive Modeling And Subtyping In Preclinical Alzheimer's Disease, Hamid Abuwarda
Tau-Connectome Predictive Modeling And Subtyping In Preclinical Alzheimer's Disease, Hamid Abuwarda
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the accumulation of amyloid-? and tau, yet clinical progression varies widely across individuals. The central aim of this dissertation was to evaluate whether functional brain connectivity derived from resting-state fMRI can serve as a clinically meaningful predictive tool in the asymptomatic phase of the disease, preclinical AD. In Chapter 2, I develop connectome-based predictive models linking whole-brain functional connectivity to regional tau positron emission tomography (PET) signal in the Anti-Amyloid Treatment in Asymptomatic Alzheimer's Disease (A4) Study. These models predicted tau burden, particularly in regions vulnerable to tau deposition in Braak stages IV/V. In …

Genetic Variants Linked To Neurodevelopmental Disorders Within The Beta3-Beta4 Loop Of The Trio Ph 2 Domain Release Autoinhibition Of The Trio Gef2 Activity, Melissa Carrizales
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
The TRIO family of proteins, which includes Trio, Kalirin, UNC-73 (in Caenorhabditis elegans), and dTrio (in Drosophila), are key regulators of cell morphogenesis, migration, tissue organization, and neuronal development through their regulation of Rho GTPases. These proteins feature multiple catalytic and scaffolding domains that mediate GTPase activation and cellular localization. TRIO proteins are essential for processes like actin dynamics, cell migration, and synaptic function, and disruptions in their activity have been linked to neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders. This study focuses on Trio, specifically its regulatory mechanisms and how disease-related mutations disrupt its catalytic activity, contributing to various human diseases.

Individual-Level Large-Scale Circuit Modelling Of Human Cortex, Rachel Ann Cooper
Individual-Level Large-Scale Circuit Modelling Of Human Cortex, Rachel Ann Cooper
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Individuality is a defining feature of human existence. Yet the neural mechanisms underlying such individual variation are not fully understood. Prior research has suggested that variation in the balance between excitation and inhibition within the brain may contribute to these differences. To investigate this hypothesis, we employed a large-scale, biophysically-based model of the human cortex. This model is governed by a small set of biologically interpretable parameters, allowing for a focused analysis of how shifts in excitation and inhibition shape individual brain function. Using this modelling framework, this thesis examined patterns of variation across both healthy individuals and clinical populations. …

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
Invasive annual grasses are a major driver of grassland degradation globally. In perennial grasslands, invasion can heavily impact biodiversity, including potential changes to the soil seed banks. Seed banks, the living seeds stored in the upper soil column, play an important role in healthy systems, or can harbor invasive species. To reduce negative invasion outcomes, whether in the seed bank, or aboveground vegetation, pre-emergent herbicides are a commonly used tool for land managers. Pre-emergent herbicides work by targeting seeds as they germinate and begin emerging from the soil. Thus, our study asks 1) how does pre-emergent herbicide influence germination and …
