Food Resource Efficiency Decision Support Hub: Consumer Survey Report, Tracey O'Connor, Mina Sadeghzadeh, Julia Lessa Feitosa Virgolino, Jennifer Attard

Publications

FRED is focused on informing policy on food waste prevention using a total food system sustainability approach.

Consumers sit at a critical point of food value networks as the decision-makers about food purchasing, household storage and management, and (non-)consumption. It was critical therefore to understand the consumer context, their concerns and needs regarding the food system, and their food purchasing and waste attitudes and behaviours.

A Cross Attention Approach To Diagnostic Explainability Using Clinical Practice Guidelines For Depression, Sumit Dalal, Deepa Tilwani, Manas Gaur, Sarika Jain, Valerie L. Shalin, Amit P. Sheth

Psychology Faculty Publications

The lack of explainability in using relevant clinical knowledge hinders the adoption of artificial intelligence-powered analysis of unstructured clinical dialogue. A wealth of relevant, untapped Mental Health (MH) data is available in online communities, providing the opportunity to address the explainability problem with substantial potential impact as a screening tool for both online and offline applications. Inspired by how clinicians rely on their expertise when interacting with patients, we leverage relevant clinical knowledge to classify and explain depression-related data, reducing manual review time and engendering trust. We developed a method to enhance attention in contemporary transformer models and generate explanations …

Cold Atmospheric Plasma Induced Degradation Of Organophosphate Pesticides On Kevlar Swatches, Ta Chun Lin, Victor Somtochukwu Mbanugo, Boluwatife Stephen Ojo, Yue-Wern Huang, Marek Locmelis, Frank Daoru Han

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) was evaluated for degrading organophosphate pesticide (OP) residues (acephate, malathion, and dimethoate) from Kevlar fabrics. Fourier transform-Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM) imaging and tensile strength testing confirmed that CAP treatment preserved Kevlar's structural integrity and mechanical properties. Results show degradation efficiency increased with higher power, shorter discharge gaps, and longer exposure duration. Hyperspectral imaging supported the detection of plasma-induced spectral changes, reinforcing the presence of reactive species. The strong oxidative potential of CAP facilitated the rapid breakdown of OPs into nontoxic byproducts. These findings demonstrate the potential of CAP as a portable, energy-efficient solution …

Investigating Synovial Fluid Electrochemical Properties Against Orthopaedic Alloys, Bailey Thomas Bond Jan 2025

Investigating Synovial Fluid Electrochemical Properties Against Orthopaedic Alloys, Bailey Thomas Bond

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Introduction. Cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (CoCrMo) femoral components are widely used in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, recent retrospective clinical trials associate moderate adverse local tissue reactions (ALTRs) with CoCrMo release in the knee. Additionally, gaps persist in our understanding of the fundamental corrosion processes that occur at the CoCrMo-synovial fluid interface. The first study investigates the electrochemical behavior of CoCrMo in human synovial fluid obtained at the time of primary TKA, using CoCrMo in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) as a comparison. The second study compares the synovial fluid properties, both physical and electrochemical, in necropsy TKA and contralateral (native) knee specimens. Methods. In …

Covid-19 In The History Of Capitalism, Victor Wallis Jan 2025

Covid-19 In The History Of Capitalism, Victor Wallis

Faculty Works

The obvious role of capital in generating poverty, war, and environmental breakdown has not led to a parallel recognition of how deeply it shapes the ideology and practice of healthcare. Progressives view access to healthcare as a matter of “right,” but with rare exceptions they do not focus attention on the wider determinants of health policy – from the life-conditions that shape public health to the prevalence, in capitalist countries, of market-inspired remedies. Looking at the US experience and noting how capitalist priorities have permeated official policies toward Covid-19, this essay discusses how medical objections to these policies have been …

Climate And Gypsum Parent Material Shape Biocrust Communities And Moss Ecology In The Chihuahuan And Mojave Deserts, Katelyn Gobbie, Nicole Pietrasiak, Brian M. Jusko, Rebecca E. Drenovsky

2025 Faculty Bibliography

Biological soil crust communities (biocrusts) establishing on gypsum soils have been well-documented for their prolific appearance and rich diversity of lichens and bryophytes. However, studies characterizing gypsum biocrusts have occurred primarily outside of the U.S., most of which lack comparisons to other soil types. We conducted intensive field surveys to evaluate the ground cover and frequency of biocrust functional groups and moss species on gypsum and non-gypsum soils in the U.S. regions with the most extensive gypsum outcrops, the northern Chihuahuan and eastern Mojave Deserts. Study sites were stratified by geomorphology and paired, so that every gypsum site was matched …

Ca-Vqvae: Cortical Folding Aware Numerical Representation Of White-Matter Structure, Yanjun Lyu, Jing Zhang, Lu Zhang, Tong Chen, Xiaowei Yu, Minheng Chen, Yan Zhuang, Chao Cao, Tianming Liu, Dajiang Zhu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

White matter (WM) serves as a fundamental component of the brain providing essential structural support and facilitating the brain cognitive processes. Thus, an accurate and efficient description of the brain's white matter structure is essential for understanding brain function connectivity and development. In this work we used the deep model to combine the information of the WM fiber bundle shape and its related cortical folding patterns together representing the WM fiber bundle from diffusion MRI tractography into a pre-defined low-dimensional space and generate the numerical representation vector. This cortical-aware vector-quantized variational encoder (CA-VQVAE) framework leverages cortical locations and folding patterns …

Classiffication Of Mild Cognitive Impairment Based On Dynamic Functional Connectivity Using Spatio-Temporal Transformer, Jing Zhang, Yanjun Lyu, Xiaowei Yu, Lu Zhang, Chao Cao, Tong Chen, Minheng Chen, Yan Zhuang, Tianming Liu, Dajiang Zhu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) is an advanced technique for capturing the dynamic changes of neural activities and can be very useful in the studies of brain diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). Yet, existing studies have not fully leveraged the sequential information embedded within dFC that can potentially provide valuable information when identifying brain conditions. In this paper, we propose a novel framework that jointly learns the embedding of both spatial and temporal information within dFC based on the transformer architecture. Specifically, we first construct dFC networks from rs-fMRI data through a sliding …

Thyroid Carcinoma Recurrence Prediction Using Artificial Intelligence On Prognosis Parameter, Supawat Suntornlimsiri

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common subtype of thyroid malignancy and is increasingly diagnosed worldwide. Although typically localised, PTC exhibits a notable risk of bilateral involvement, with contralateral disease occurring in up to 44 percent of cases. While completion thyroidectomy is recommended in selected high-risk scenarios, it carries potential complications, making accurate prediction of contralateral involvement essential. This study investigates the utility of classical statistical methods and machine learning (ML) algorithms—Support Vector Machines (SVM), Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), and Random Forest (RF)—in predicting contralateral PTC using a retrospective dataset of 122 lobectomy patients. ML models, especially RF with …

Immunofluorescence-Based Detection Of Myc–Egr1 Pathway Activity In P53-Deficient Human Colorectal Cancer Cells, Samantha E. Schultheiss, Lyndsea Skojec, Erick Spears Dr. Jan 2025

Immunofluorescence-Based Detection Of Myc–Egr1 Pathway Activity In P53-Deficient Human Colorectal Cancer Cells, Samantha E. Schultheiss, Lyndsea Skojec, Erick Spears Dr.

Immunofluorescence-Based Detection of MYC–EGR1 Pathway Activity in p53-Deficient Human Colorectal Cancer Cells

The Wnt signaling pathway drives proliferation in the intestinal epithelium and maintains those cells in an undifferentiated state. Dysregulation of this pathway results in uncontrolled proliferation of the intestinal epithelium which can lead to colorectal cancer. These effects are driven by the expression of a common Wnt target gene, MYC. Upregulation of MYC expression by the Wnt signaling pathway, either during normal Wnt signaling or dysregulated Wnt signaling, canonically drives intestinal epithelial cells into a proliferative state. Under a specific cellular context, the loss of functional p53, MYC …

Exploring The Myc-Egr1 Pathway In Human Colorectal Cancer Cells, Jacob L. Dykstra Iii, Bishoy S. Sami, Dr. Erick Spears

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

The WNT signaling pathway plays a crucial role in the regulation of cell growth and death in the intestinal epithelium and during colorectal carcinogenesis. In the presence of Wnt, MYC is upregulated, which leads to the proliferation of intestinal epithelial cells. Under certain cellular conditions, namely the loss of p53 function common to colorectal tumors, MYC upregulates the expression of the tumor suppressor EGR1, leading to apoptosis. This MYC-EGR1 pathway has been observed in p53-knockout mouse embryonic fibroblasts but has yet to be observed in human cells. These studies aim to assess the activity of the MYC-EGR1 pathway in human …

Determining Localization Of Surf-4 In Drosophila Melanogaster In The Secretory Pathway, Jada Scott Jan 2025

Determining Localization Of Surf-4 In Drosophila Melanogaster In The Secretory Pathway, Jada Scott

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The purpose of this research is to determine the role of the Surfeit-4 gene, or Surf-4 locus protein, during Drosophila melanogaster development. Surf-4 was identified in the Srivastava lab in a biochemical screen for proteins that associate with the basement membrane (BM): a structure needed and required for normal development and its degradation is a hallmark of tumor metastasis. Surf-4 has been predicted to function within intracellular compartments and is known to be expressed in many parts of the developing fly. We are currently determining why Surf-4 is important in development and what role, if any, it could play during …

Lagoon Lessons: Where Science Meets Service Learning, Cori Mcwilliams, Christopher Poulios

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2025

When we were kids, we were always told to leave someplace better than you found it - maybe it was your room, campsite, or local park. Now, we have taken this lesson as a call to action to restore the Indian River Lagoon. Over the semester, we created and hosted an Oyster City Safari program for elementary schoolers as a part of UCF’s STEM Day, educating 50 students about oyster reefs and their importance for conservation. We also supported faculty and graduate students in their active research projects, and worked hands-on with local restoration leaders in their ongoing conservation work. …
