What Frames A Life?, Mart Mcfly Smith
What Frames A Life?, Mart Mcfly Smith
IdeaFest 2025
My dad, Ricky Wayne Fischer, died on September 8th, 2024, after a lifetime struggle with addiction. An estimated 28.9 million Americans had an Alcohol Use Disorder in 2024 (NIAAA, 2024). Families who have a parent with a Substance Abuse Disorder are “characterized by an environment of secrecy, loss, conflict, violence or abuse, emotional chaos, role reversal, and fear.” (Lander, 2013). To tackle the wicked problem of addiction, this paper focuses on the psychological, biological, sociological, economic disciplines, and my own primary source of having a parent with a Substance Abuse Disorder. Additionally explored, are the creative disciplines of photography and …

An Investigation: How Long-Term Meditation Practices Serve As Change Agents For Positive Parenting, Diana Serras
Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-
This research study investigated, analyzed, and compared stress, depression, and anxiety levels between parents who are long-term meditation practitioners and those who are not. By exploring questions related to the impact of mindfulness on parental stress levels, parent-child interactions, emotional awareness, self-regulation, and nonjudgmental acceptance, the research sheds light on the transformative potential of long-term meditation practices for mindful parenting. The study adopted a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative survey data with qualitative insights to provide a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. The research included quantitative data from three self-report instruments and qualitative data from five case studies to explore …
Goodtimer For Good Behavior: A Nonconcurrent Multiple Baseline Examination Of A Behavioral Device Intervention To Reduce Child Misbehaviors, Morgan Weinstein
Goodtimer For Good Behavior: A Nonconcurrent Multiple Baseline Examination Of A Behavioral Device Intervention To Reduce Child Misbehaviors, Morgan Weinstein
Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-
Behavioral Parent Training (BPT) effectively decreases disruptive behavior in children (Daley et al., 2014). Nonetheless, many parents perceive BPT to be challenging and demanding, leading to reports of high treatment dropout rates (Chacko et al., 2016.) To address this, the present study evaluated the effectiveness of Goodtimer, a behavioral health device utilizing contingency management, an element of BPT, to mitigate child disruptive behaviors. The Goodtimer is designed to make administering a contingency management system easier for parents. Employing a nonconcurrent multiple baseline design, the study assessed six families with children aged 3-9 years. Most parents who used the Goodtimer reported …
The Danger In Designations: U.S. Terrorism Designation Lists In Gaza And Beyond, Elizabeth Beavers
The Danger In Designations: U.S. Terrorism Designation Lists In Gaza And Beyond, Elizabeth Beavers
American University National Security Law Brief
What is “terrorism”? The term has surged in U.S. political discourse following Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, Israel’s subsequent onslaught of Gaza, and escalating violence in the region involving Iran and similarly aligned groups like Hezbollah and the Houthis. U.S. politicians and thought leaders have characterized U.S. support for Israel’s bombardment as a fight against “terror,” described the violence conducted by Palestinians and their backers as “terrorism,” and accused pro-Palestinian U.S. protestors of “supporting terrorism.”
More than mere political rhetoric, “terrorism” is a term that carries big legal consequences. This is in large part because the U.S. …
Transpersonal Philosophy Grows Up: A Clarification Of Ken Wilber’S Most Recent Updates To His Theoretical Framework, Ritske Rensma
Transpersonal Philosophy Grows Up: A Clarification Of Ken Wilber’S Most Recent Updates To His Theoretical Framework, Ritske Rensma
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
The fact that there are multiple phases to Ken Wilber’s theoretical development has been widely recognized, with Wilber himself arguing that his works can be divided into four distinct phases (1983/2001). Students of Wilber’s work later added a fifth and final phase, which is said to begin in 2001. What has received hardly any scholarly attention, however, is the fact that Wilber still made major changes to his theoretical framework several years after the beginning of phase 5 in Integral Spirituality (2006), and that it is only after the publication of this book that his thinking really reaches a steady …
Unitlessness: Highlighting The Trans-Discursive Qualities Of Nondualism And Implications For Psychological Terminology, Christian U. Krägeloh
Unitlessness: Highlighting The Trans-Discursive Qualities Of Nondualism And Implications For Psychological Terminology, Christian U. Krägeloh
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
Nondual awareness has recently gained increased interest in broader psychological research. In meditation contexts, it reflects the dissolution of subject and object, while in Maha_ya_na Buddhism, practitioners aim to develop insight that leads to awareness of nonduality in everyday-life situations. Traditionally, teaching of nondualism employed paradoxes to prompt nonconceptual inquiry into reconciling dualistic contradictions. To offer an approach to communicate nondualism to a modern audience of psychology researchers, the framework of unitlessness is introduced here, which differentiates between linguistic characteristics (units) and experiential phenomena (unity), both within an enveloping ineffability (unitlessness). This type of nondualism is trans-discursive, as it acknowledges …

In Vivo Evaluation Of Novel Nanoparticles And Repurposed Pharmaceuticals To Combat Antimicrobial Resistance, Sarah E. Evans
In Vivo Evaluation Of Novel Nanoparticles And Repurposed Pharmaceuticals To Combat Antimicrobial Resistance, Sarah E. Evans
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
In a 2019 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), infections resistant to antibiotic treatment amount to about three million infections and 48,000 deaths. Antimicrobial resistance is an escalating global threat as existing antibiotics lose efficacy over time. The project described is focused on partnering with pharmaceutical researchers and producers to test new nanoparticle-based or repurposed compounds. The central hypothesis of this thesis is that pharmaceutical formulations such as nanoparticles may provide a cost-effective means of combating the emerging antimicrobial resistance. The nanoparticle compounds allowed for a wide range of customization for the pharmaceutical design, since the …

Massera’S Theorem On Arbitrary Discrete Time Domains, Martin Bohner, Jaqueline G. Mesquita, Sabrina Streipert
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We present a general version of Massera's theorems for arbitrary discrete domains, based on a newly introduced definition for both linear and nonlinear equations. For scalar nonlinear equations, we identify sufficient conditions that ensure each µ-bounded solution approaches a periodic solution asymptotically. In the case of linear systems, we prove that the presence of a µ-bounded solution necessarily leads to a periodic solution. We also provide some examples to show the practical implications of our findings.

Purpose: Neuroma formation is a notable complication that can occur following amputation. Newer techniques are proving to be successful in preventing neuroma formation by providing the proximal nerve segment with an end organ to help with organized growth. Redirecting arterial blood flow to the nerve endings may be an effective mechanism of preventing neuroma formation. The aim of this study was to demonstrate that by coapting the proximal end of a transected nerve with a functional artery as a vascular end organ, neuroma formation can be prevented. Methods: Six Sprague-Dawley rats were used for the control and experimental groups. Subjects …

The Nondual Realization Of Advaita Vedanta Does Not Support A Psychological Theory Of Consciousness, Glenn Hartelius
The Nondual Realization Of Advaita Vedanta Does Not Support A Psychological Theory Of Consciousness, Glenn Hartelius
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
Advaita Vedanta is seen as something of an authoritative source for nondual philosophies and theories of consciousness that postulate a pure featureless awareness at the base of mental experience. These approaches deviate from both the lineage-based teachings of Advaita Vedanta and the necessary standards of science, constructing compromises that fall short of traditional fidelity and psychological rigor. Dialogues between psychology and Advaita Vedanta need to delineate clearly between a sensate phenomenology of experience and spiritual interpretations that may be implicit within experiential descriptions.

Fearing The Other: The Underlying Mechanisms Of Mental Illness Stigma, Theresa Maria Power
Selected Full-Text Dissertations 2020-
This study sought to clarify the underlying mechanisms behind mental illness stigma. Using a sample of 303 adults from the general population, participants completed a series of online self-reports in response to a vignette about “Harry,” an individual who was described as either Black or White, with schizophrenia or depression. Respondents answered questions regarding perceptions of dangerousness, causal attributions of mental illness, and endorsement of stigmatizing beliefs, and also provided narratives for Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) cards that were coded using the Social Cognition and Object Relations Scale (SCORS). Results of structural equation modeling indicated that there was no direct …

Child Sexual Abuse And Relationship Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (Rocd): The Influence Of Betrayal Trauma On Mental Contamination, Maya Elizabeth Citron
Selected Full-Text Dissertations 2020-
The aim of this project was to gain a better understanding of whether survivors of childhood sexual abuse (CTQ) are more prone to enduring higher levels of relationship-centered relationship obsessive-compulsive disorder (ROCI) symptoms. This project also examined whether mental contamination (VOCI-MC) influenced the relationship between CTQ and ROCI and if this impact was dependent on levels of betrayal trauma. It was hypothesized that betrayal trauma (BQ) would moderate the mediating effect of VOCI-MC on CRQ and ROCI symptoms. A sample of 270 female participants ages 18 years and older completed an online survey that assessed histories of childhood trauma, ROCI …

A Set Of Axioms Providing A Basis For Understanding And Analyzing Work Systems In Organizational Settings, Steven Alter
Business Analytics and Information Systems
This paper proposes 24 axioms that form a basis for understanding and analyzing sociotechnical and totally automated work systems in organizational settings. The introduction identifies reasons for trying to develop axioms of that type. Two background sections compare axioms with other types of “knowledge objects”, illustrate the minimal presence of axioms in the IS discipline, define the domain of relevance for the axioms discussed here, and explain the process of developing those axioms. The axioms are organized in five categories: 1) system in context, 2) system operation, 3) system goals and goal attainment, 4) system uncertainties, and 5) system-related change. …

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive disease commonly recognized by thick mucus and loud coughs. The manifestation of these symptoms is due to the inability of chloride ions to diffuse out of the cell. Thus, preventing osmosis resulting in a thick mucus on the lung’s surface. Those who suffer from this disease have difficulty breathing and require a modulator with a vest to increase gas exchange in the lungs. Moreover, the disease can result in much pain due to coughs, which destroys ciliated epithelial cells. Patients who have cystic fibrosis can suffer from pneumonia and other bronchial infections. They …

Pregnancy is a vulnerable time with significant cardiovascular changes that can lead to adverse outcomes, which can extend into the postpartum window. Exposure to emissions from electronic cigarettes (Ecig), commonly known as "vaping," has an adverse impact on cardiovascular function during pregnancy and post-natal life of offspring, but the postpartum effects on maternal health are poorly understood. We used a Sprague Dawley rat model, where pregnant dams are exposed to Ecigs between gestational day (GD)2-GD21 to examine postpartum consequences. Litter and dam health were monitored during the weaning period, and maternal vascular and endocrine function were assessed after weaning. Exposure …

Parents Who Make America Great Again: Identity Politics In Right-Wing Populist Discourses On Gender Ideology And Immigration, Alina Hechler
Theses and Dissertations--Gender and Women's Studies
This dissertation explores how anti-immigration and anti-(trans)gender campaigns in the United States engage in an identity politics in which a group benefiting from heteronormative, white supremacist, and nationalist social structures discursively positions itself as an oppressed minority facing an elitist, oppressive, and parasitic establishment. While anti-transgender and anti-immigration platforms represent two distinct issues, they need to be situated within the broader context of right-wing politics. With a focus on the construction of parenthood, my dissertation juxtaposes these two forms of right-wing campaigns through a mixed-method approach by tracing the depiction of two parental figures that have recently emerged in right-wing …
