The Northern Great Plains (NGP) is one of the largest intact grasslands remaining in the world. These two studies examine a few of the ecological concerns on the NGP today. First, the woody encroachment of conifers into grasslands and the effects of wildfires. Second, the effects of bison (Bison bison) reintroduction on plant communities. In Chapter 1, this study aims to examine the effects of wildfire and mechanical timber thinning, using a two-by-two factorial design, on plant community responses and forage quality in the Bull Mountains area of central Montana, USA. Fusarium oxysporum race 4 (FOV4) is a fungal pathogen that infects cotton (Gossypium spp.) plants, resulting in fusarium wilt (FW) disease that causes significant wilting, yield loss, and eventually death. Since cotton is such an important crop globally, with tens of millions of bales of fiber produced and sold worldwide each year, it is critical to develop effective strategies to combat this pathogen. The study addresses the critical need to document Appalachian folk medicine conventions and cultural practices from a modern perspective. In so doing, it addresses folk medicine research gaps in understudied places in South Central Appalachia, particularly in Southwestern Virginia and Northeast Tennessee. This research utilizes participant observation and oral history interviews to research modern Appalachian folk medicine practices among a select group of practitioners. This thesis develops a discrete stochastic linear systems interpretation of age–stage demographic evolution grounded in Leslie operators and realized in a discrete-event simulation implemented with salabim. The central claim is that one annual cycle of the simulation constitutes a cone-preserving, stochastic affine transformation on a high- dimensional population state vector indexed by age, sex, marital status, household type, employment, and education, and that the composition of yearly operators yields a random matrix product whose top Lyapunov exponent is the stochastic counterpart of the Perron–Frobenius growth rate (Caswell, 2001; Tuljapurkar, 1997)[1, 2]. This study focuses on isolation, chemical characterization, and in-vitro cytotoxic evaluation of novel polar flavonoids from chromolaena leivensis. A 95% ethanolic extract of c. leivensis shipped by Prof. Ruben Torrenegra from University of Applied and Environmental Sciences, Bogota, Colombia, was dissolved in 1:1 methanol/chloroform mixture and its purity analyzed by TLC. The sample was eluted with toluene/methanol in an increasing order of polarity on silica gel, resulting in 49 fractions labelled CLA1 to CLA49. ABSTRACT Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) poses significant management challenges, particularly in treatment-resistant cases, greatly affecting patients’ quality of life. This paper provides consensus-based recommendations to guide clinicians in managing difficult-to-treat CRSwNP in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. A modified Delphi method was used to gather expert opinions from GCC specialists through surveys and discussions, achieving consensus on 14 key statements for CRSwNP management. Key criteria identified for difficult-to-treat CRSwNP included early recurrence after surgery, comorbid atopic diseases, and frequent need for oral steroids. Background: Functional tremor (FT) is considered the most common phenomenology among patients with functional movement disorders (FMDs). Most patients have limb tremor, but they can also present with tremor involving the head and trunk.

Objectives and methods: We aimed to assess the clinical phenomenology of functional head tremor (FHT) and contrast it with features of HT observed in 125 patients with other tremor etiologies (OTE), including 71 patients with essential tremor (ET).

Results: There were 101 consecutive patients (68.3% females) with FT from which n = 36 (35.6%) had FHT. Yes-yes tremor was the most common directionality (47.2%). Functional trunk …

Familicide is generally defined as the killing of multiple family members by a relative. However, there is no single, universally accepted definition of familicide, and different studies use varying definitions with different inclusion criteria. Sometimes, very restrictive definitions are used that exclude many similar cases (e.g., father kills spouse and children). Conversely, broader definitions sometimes overlap with other phenomena, such as mass murder. Only a few studies have examined this phenomenon, primarily from an exploratory standpoint.

Open cattle feedlots are a major form of beef production infrastructure in the United States, characterized by outdoor confinement, high animal densities, and regulated feeding practices. Despite their economic importance, a comprehensive and spatially consistent national database of these facilities remains limited. This dataset provides labeled training data, trained deep learning models, and geospatial detection outputs developed to support automated identification of open cattle feedlots from aerial imagery. The dataset includes a manually curated shapefile of 11,746 open cattle feedlot facilities identified through visual interpretation of high-resolution aerial imagery in highly productive counties of Nebraska, Kansas, and Texas. Reforestation is a prominent climate change mitigation strategy, but available global maps of reforestation potential are widely criticized and highly variable, which limits their ability to provide robust estimates of both the locations and total area of opportunity. Here we develop global maps that address common critiques, build on a review of 89 reforestation maps created at multiple scales, and present eight reforestation scenarios with varying objectives, including providing ecosystem services, minimizing social conflicts, and delivering government policies. Zoonotic malaria risk at human-wildlife-environment interfaces requires surveillance that integrates signals from reservoirs, vectors and the environment. We coupled a drone-based environmental DNA (eDNA) canopy swabbing approach with portable quantitative PCR (qPCR) to detect Plasmodium DNA in situ during a 24-h field exercise in the Amazon rainforest. Drone-lowered sterile swabs into the canopy, which were then extracted and subjected to a multiplex pan-Plasmodium assay targeting five human-infecting Plasmodium species (limit of detection 0.2 parasites μL−1). Our manuscript presents Trajectory Analysis, which is a novel method to characterize patterns of gross changes during a time series of raster maps. This manuscript is our first article to elaborate on concepts and features of Trajectory Analysis that are necessary to analyze more than two time intervals. The method computes up to eight trajectories and three components of change: Quantity, Exchange, and Alternation.
