Tiny Temp Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Infant Temperature Monitor, Alexandria Lukacsffi, Sydney Dedrick Mar 2025

Tiny Temp Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Infant Temperature Monitor, Alexandria Lukacsffi, Sydney Dedrick

Biomedical Engineering

This document outlines the key steps taken in the specification, design, and functionality of the Tiny Temp Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Infant Temperature Monitor. The BICEP team identified temperature monitors for infants in incubators in the NICU as an area of need after surveying hospitals in the San Luis Obispo area. Current thermometers are oversimplified in design, consisting of only the temperature probe and a piece of adhesive holding the probe directly onto the infant's skin. As a result, the adhesive is weak to prevent harm to the infant and, therefore, falls off the infant easily and frequently, posing a …

Experimental Approaches To Investigate Biophysical Interactions Between Homeodomain Transcription Factors And Dna, Fadwa Mekkaoui, Robert A. Drewell, Jacqueline M. Dresch, Donald E. Spratt

Chemistry

Homeodomain transcription factors (TFs) bind to specific DNA sequences to regulate the expression of target genes. Structural work has provided insight into molecular identities and aided in unraveling structural features of these TFs. However, the detailed affinity and specificity by which these TFs bind to DNA sequences is still largely unknown. Qualitative methods, such as DNA footprinting, Electrophoretic Mobility Shift Assays (EMSAs), Systematic Evolution of Ligands by Exponential Enrichment (SELEX), Bacterial One Hybrid (B1H) systems, Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR), and Protein Binding Microarrays (PBMs) have been widely used to investigate the biochemical characteristics of TF-DNA binding events. In addition to …

Evolution Of Mate Guarding Intensity In Crickets As A Possible Adaptation To Sexual Conflict Over Sperm Transfer, Bert Foquet, Jack Thomas Mckermitt, John Hunt, Ben M. Sadd, Scott K. Sakaluk

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

Mate guarding is a common behavioral adaptation in males to ensure mating or to hinder current partners from remating with rival males. In the decorated cricket, Gryllodes sigillatus, males transfer a spermatophore to females at mating, comprising a sperm-containing ampulla enveloped in a large gelatinous mass, the spermatophylax, that serves as a nuptial food gift for the female. Males guard the female while she feeds on the nuptial gift and while sperm are evacuated from the ampulla into her reproductive tract. Mate guarding behavior functions to prevent competitors from mating with the female but may also represent a behavioral …

The Cure-Comm Framework: A Guide For Infusing Cures With Science Communication, Rebekka Darner, Ebenezer Korkor

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

Researchers have employed diverse instructional strategies to impart science communication (SciComm) skills, a cherished 21st-century skill into undergraduate students. We reviewed the pedagogical strategies used in developing SciComm skills in undergraduates. This review revealed that analyzing data and scientific literature, increasing exposure to multiple writing contexts, providing multiple opportunities to present findings orally, and providing feedback are used to teach SciComm skills. Many instructors who implement course-based undergraduate research experiences (CURE) report improved SciComm skills as one of the benefits of CUREs. To decipher points of intersection among CUREs and SciComm pedagogical strategies, we also reviewed the literature on pedagogical …

Segregating Sites Enhance Accuracy Of Species Abundance Estimates From Edna, Kara J. Andres Mar 2025

Segregating Sites Enhance Accuracy Of Species Abundance Estimates From Edna, Kara J. Andres

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

Species abundance is a fundamental metric in ecology and conservation. Assessing how populations change across space time enables the identification of population trends and informs management and conservation decisions. However, measuring species abundance can be a challenging task, with logistical constraints, sampling biases, and detection limits inhibiting meaningful abundance estimates. Environmental DNA (eDNA) approaches have improved our ability to monitor species presence and biodiversity and may also serve as a tool for measuring species abundance. However, abundance estimates from eDNA typically rely on the correlation between species abundance and the concentration of target species' DNA in a sample, which may …

Synchronous Presentation Of Right Parotid Branchial Cleft Cyst And Left Neck Hpv-Associated Cystic Metastatic Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Diagnostic Quandary, Syed H A Naqvi, Syed H S Naqvi, David Allen, Arturo A Eguia, Jing Liu, Ron J Karni

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Branchial cleft cyst arising within the parotid space is considered an extremely rare phenomenon. In contrast, cystic squamous cell carcinoma in the lateral neck is not an uncommon presentation of HPV-related head and neck cancer. Although they have singly been narrated in literature, simultaneous expression of these anomalies has yet to be reported. We describe a case of synchronous presentation of branchial cleft cyst of the right parotid gland and cystic metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the left neck. These findings are discussed in light of the challenges in fine needle aspiration biopsy of cystic masses, and the risk of …

Feminists For Sex-Based Rights: Trump Or Harris In The 2024 Election?, Kara Dansky Mar 2025

Feminists For Sex-Based Rights: Trump Or Harris In The 2024 Election?, Kara Dansky

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

Some US feminists who support sex-based rights for women and girls voted for Donald Trump in the 2024 US presidential election; others voted for Kamala Harris. For an American feminist to vote for a female Democrat for president is not surprising. Still, because the Democrats embraced “gender identity” at the expense of women and girls as a sex class, some feminists chose to vote for Donald Trump. This article explores some reasons for voting one way or the other (or not at all).

Hyperactivation of fatty acid biosynthesis holds promise as a targeted therapeutic strategy in prostate cancer (PCa). However, inhibiting these enzymes could potentially promote metastatic progression in various other cancers. Herein, we found that depletion of acetyl-CoA carboxylase 1 (encoded by ACACA), the enzyme responsible for the first and rate-limiting step of de novo fatty acid biosynthesis, facilitated epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and migration of PCa cells. This finding was validated in vitro through cell migration assays and in vivo using a metastatic model established by tail vein injection of ACACA-depleted cells into BALB/c nude mice. Additionally, depletion of ACACA activated the …

Pro-energetic effects of functionalized, oxidized carbon nanozymes (OCNs) are reported. OCNs, derived from harsh acid oxidation of single-wall carbon nanotubes or activated charcoal are previously shown to possess multiple nanozymatic activities including mimicking superoxide dismutase and catalyzing the oxidation of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) to NAD+. These actions are predicted to generate a glycolytic shift and enhance mitochondrial energetics under impaired conditions. Impaired mitochondrial energy metabolism is increasingly recognized as an important facet of traumatic brain injury (TBI) pathophysiology and decreases the efficiency of electron transport chain (ETC)-coupled adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and NAD+ regeneration. In vitro, OCNs promote a …

A Sample Size Analysis Of A Mathematical Model Of Longitudinal Tumor Volume And Progression-Free Survival For Bayesian Individual Dynamic Predictions In Recurrent High-Grade Glioma, Daniel J Glazar, Solmaz Sahebjam, Hsiang-Husan M Yu, Dung-Tsa Chen, Menal Bhandari, Heiko Enderling

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Patients with recurrent high-grade glioma (rHGG) have a poor prognosis with median progression-free survival (PFS) ofheterogenous, suggesting a clinical need for prognostic models. Bayesian data analysis can exploit individual patient follow-up imaging studies to adaptively predict the risk of progression. We propose a novel sample size analysis for Bayesian individual dynamic predictions and demonstrate proof of principle. We coupled a nonlinear mixed effects tumor growth inhibition model with a survival model. Longitudinal tumor volumes and time-to-progression were simulated for 2000 in silico rHGG patients. Bayesian individual dynamic predictions of PFS curves were evaluated using area under the receiver operating characteristic …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Importance: Molecular techniques, including next-generation sequencing, genomic copy number profiling, fusion transcript detection, and genomic DNA methylation arrays, are now indispensable tools for the workup of central nervous system (CNS) tumors. Yet there remains a great deal of heterogeneity in using such biomarker testing across institutions and hospital systems. This is in large part because there is a persistent reluctance among third-party payers to cover molecular testing. The objective of this Review is to describe why comprehensive molecular biomarker testing is now required for the accurate diagnosis and grading and prognostication of CNS tumors and, in so doing, to justify …

On Explicit Solutions For Coupled Reaction-Diffusion And Burgers-Type Equations With Variable Coefficients Through A Riccati System, Jose M. Escorcia, Erwin Suazo

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

This work is concerned with the study of explicit solutions for generalized coupled reaction-diffusion and Burgers-type systems with variable coefficients. Including nonlinear models with variable coefficients such as the diffusive Lotka-Volterra model, the Gray-Scott model, the Burgers equations. The equations' integrability (via the explicit formulation of the solutions) is accomplished by using similarity transformations and requiring that the coefficients fulfill a Riccati system. We present traveling wave-type solutions as well as solutions with more complex dynamics and relevant features such as bending. A Mathematica file has been prepared as supplementary material, verifying the Riccati systems used in the construction of …

Metacognition And The 5cs Of Positive Youth Development Programs: A Review Of Metacognitive Interventions, Omolola A. Odejimi, Leslie F. Clark

Journal of Youth Development

Positive youth development (PYD) programs have increased positive outcomes for adolescents, however research on the underlying change processes in these programs remains limited. The 5Cs (Competence, Confidence, Character, Caring and Connection) of PYD are a framework of desirable outcomes for youth programs. Change to metacognition is proposed as a mechanism by which PYD programming accomplishes these outcomes. This review describes findings from metacognitive interventions with PYD-relevant outcomes in adolescents aged 10-24. Fifteen electronic databases were searched using keyword phrases related to “metacognitive intervention” and “adolescents”. Seventeen studies met inclusion criteria. Included studies addressed 2 of the 5 goals of PYD …
