The potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller), is an important pest of potato crops capable of boring into and consuming the potato tubers. Although chemical insecticides are employed to control P. operculella populations, their efficacy is frequently limited, raising environmental concerns. Host plant volatiles are important allelochemicals that can be exploited for the management of pests. In our previous studies, we identified five volatile organic compounds (3-ethylacetophenone, 4-ethylacetophenone, geranylacetone, ethylbenzene, and 4-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pentanone) as allelochemicals potentially influencing the oviposition behavior of P. operculella. Using electroantennography (EAG) and behavioral assays, we found that 4-ethylacetophenone significantly repelled P. operculella at all tested concentrations …

Production Of Biofertilizer And Biohydrogen Via Anaerobic Fermentation Of Ulva Spp.: A Feasibility Study For Reducing Coastal Eutrophication And Generating Clean Energy, Katie Graves
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This feasibility study investigates the potential of anaerobic fermentation of Ulva spp., a locally sourced macroalga, using Clostridium acetobutylicum to produce biofertilizer and biohydrogen. It further examines the viability of Ulva as fermentation biomass by identifying seasonal trends in nutrient concentrations of biofertilizer and gas production while determining the impact of the preservation method on gas yield. The biofertilizer used for nutrient analysis was produced from fresh Ulva harvested within 24 hours prior to fermentation. Orthophosphate (PO4-P), nitrite (NO2-N), nitrate (NO3-N), and ammonia (NH3-N) concentrations were analyzed post-fermentation using spectrophotometric flow injection analysis (FIA). Potassium (K+) concentrations were measured using …
Seasonality Of Groundfish Community Structure And Habitat Associations On A Mesophotic Reef In Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary: Implications For Conservation And Management, Lauren Parker
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Management of marine ecosystems requires accurate, quantitative, and spatially explicit information on species distributions at scales that are relevant to the management process (J. Ward et al. 1999). This study investigates fish assemblages at depths between 30 and 40 meters, which are relatively understudied compared to shallower ( < 30 m) waters, surveyed extensively via SCUBA, and deeper (>40 m) waters, which are surveyed using submersibles. This research addresses ecological and management-based questions about seasonal and depth-related shifts in groundfish community structure, the role of oceanographic variables in predicting these shifts, and microhabitat selectivity as predictors of community assemblage. To evaluate species abundance, biomass, diversity, and microhabitat associations associations on …
A Novel Application Of Diver-Operated Stereo Video To Survey The Influence Of Benthic Habitat Variation For Urchin And Macroalgae Populations On California Rocky Reefs, Travis Leggett
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Subtidal surveys are critical for ecosystem monitoring, traditionally involving diver underwater visual census (UVC), though such methods can impose time or logistical restrictions on the study. Imagery-based techniques, such as diver-operated stereo-video (stereo- -dimensional measurements from 2-dimensional images, facilitating accurate size and distance estimates as well as the ability to survey large areas quickly. This study compared two stereo-DOV angles (45° and 90°) with UVC to estimate the abundance of benthic macroinvertebrates and macroalgae, and habitat characteristics (relief, substrate, benthic cover) within kelp forests and urchin barrens. We also explored associations between habitat complexity, measured as relief and substrate transitions, …
Policymakers’ Perceptions About Providing Affordable Housing In Rural Georgia, Robert Joseph Wiley
Policymakers’ Perceptions About Providing Affordable Housing In Rural Georgia, Robert Joseph Wiley
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The literature showed that low-income households face a persistent deficit of affordable housing, forcing these families to live in dilapidated housing or to live beyond their means to pay for adequate housing, and that this problem transcends rural and urban counties. Further, researchers indicated that solving this problem provided a stable workforce and a better quality of life for all income groups. A gap in the literature showed the need for more research on nonmetropolitan communities addressing housing and neighborhood revitalization; therefore, through this qualitative multiple-case study local policymakers' perceptions of the affordable housing problem in rural Georgia were explored. …

BACKGROUND: There is significant interest in NO pathway modulators, specifically type 5 phosphodiesterase inhibitors (PDE5is), to treat patients with a Fontan circulation. Trials, however, have had mixed results. The relationship between the NO pathway and clinical status in patients with Fontan circulation is a significant knowledge gap.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We performed targeted metabolomic analysis using liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry to quantify plasma NO pathway metabolite concentrations from 2 well-characterized populations of patients with Fontan circulation: the Boston Adult Congenital Heart Disease Biobank and Fontan Udenafil Exercise Longitudinal studies. We investigated associations between NO metabolite concentrations and clinical …

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has varied presentations from asymptomatic to death. Efforts to identify factors responsible for differential COVID-19 severity include but are not limited to genome wide association studies (GWAS) and transcriptomic analysis. More recently, variability in host epigenomic profiles have garnered attention, providing links to disease severity. However, whole epigenome analysis of the respiratory tract, the target tissue of SARS-CoV-2, remains ill-defined.
RESULTS: We interrogated the nasal methylome to identify pathophysiologic drivers in COVID-19 severity through whole genome bisulfite sequencing (WGBS) of nasal samples from COVID-19 positive individuals …

Anthropogenic Influences On Parasitoid Wasps’ Biocontrol Of Invasive Insect Pest Species In Africa, Fathiya M. Khamis, Inusa J. Ajene
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Sustainable agriculture is crucial to ensuring food and nutritional security and improving livelihoods of millions across Africa. However, agricultural production is constrained by native and invasive pests. Indiscriminate insecticide use is often the first line of action to manage these pests, harming human and animal health, and impacting biodiversity. Thus, shifting to more ecologically sustainable alternatives is key to biodiversity conservation and sustainable agriculture. Biological control is a core component of integrated pest management strategies, and natural enemies, like parasitoid wasps, are considered one of the most environmentally sustainable means of managing pests. However, the Anthropocene plays a significant role …

Introduction: In sub-Saharan Africa, the invasive South American leafminer Phthorimaea absoluta is the most damaging tomato pest. Females of the pest can reproduce both sexually and through parthenogenesis and lay their eggs on all tomato plant parts. The mirid predator Nesidiocoris tenuis, a biological control agent for the pest, is also a tomato pest when prey population is low. To date, however, no study has developed an eco-friendly solution that targets both the predator and its host in a tomato farming system. Objective: To develop a bio-based management system for both pest and predator based on the combined use of …
The Pathway To And Consequences Of Foster Parent Intervention In Dependency Cases, Gillian Katz Lamon
The Pathway To And Consequences Of Foster Parent Intervention In Dependency Cases, Gillian Katz Lamon
UC Law Journal
Over the last 50 years, federal child welfare legislation has wrestled with how to reconcile the competing goals of the child welfare system: child protection, family preservation, and permanency. The United States foster care system has evolved alongside transformations in private adoptions. As the prospects for private adoption have dwindled, the pendulum has shifted toward prioritizing child protection. Youth in foster care have suddenly become the private adoption alternative. Most recently, some state courts have granted foster parents standing to intervene in termination of parental rights proceedings. In those cases, foster parents are permitted to battle with natural parents for …
Multiplying Multipliers: How To Develop Church Planters Who Multiply Through Evangelical Church-Based Planting, Patrick Grach
Multiplying Multipliers: How To Develop Church Planters Who Multiply Through Evangelical Church-Based Planting, Patrick Grach
Doctor of Ministry (DMin)
The Evangelical Church of America is declining, while the population of the United States is growing. Though the church has a biblical mandate to multiply and fulfill the Great Commission, the church-planter pipelines within church-planting churches and organizations are shrinking, and only a fraction of churches are multiplying by developing church planters and releasing them to plant new generations of churches. The challenge of generational church multiplication is captured in the research question: How can church-planting churches and church-based church-planting networks prepare church planters to multiply? This study provides a biblical foundation for a practical theology of church multiplication and …
Malware Classification Using Weighted Control Flow Graphs, Tjada Nelson
Malware Classification Using Weighted Control Flow Graphs, Tjada Nelson
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
Malware remains a primary cybersecurity threat because traditional signature-based detection methods have difficulty matching the pace of evolving malicious code implementing complex obfuscation methods to evade detection. The current detection methods fail to identify new malware variations, which expose systems to damaging cyber attacks that result in major security breaches and delayed incident response capabilities. This research investigates the speed-performance gap between signature-based detection and control flow graph behavioral understanding through developing Weighted Control Flow Graph (WCFG), which merges structural program analysis with signature-based detection capabilities. The design science research method enabled this study to create two main research outcomes: …

Communication During Perimmigration: A Life-Line Interview Method Study, Giada Roberta Rossi
Communication & Theatre Arts Theses
This thesis examines the communication challenges faced by migrants and their impact on acculturation using a new approach. The study analyzed autobiographical memories of immigrants’ communication to explore both positive and negative experiences over time. The study extends previous intercultural communication research by using the Life-Line Interview Method (LIM) (Assink & Schroots, 2010) to collect autobiographical narratives from twelve participants about their communication journeys. The findings reveal consistencies with past intercultural communication research insofar as uncertainty and identity problems were pervasive, but also positively extends past research arguing that supportive environments, characterized by culturally responsive educators and peer networks, play …

Department of Neurosurgery Faculty Papers
Chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH) presents a multifaceted challenge in contemporary neurological practice, necessitating innovative therapeutic strategies. This comprehensive review explores the convergence of two promising interventions: statins and middle meningeal artery (MMA) Embolization. With cSDH incidence on the rise, particularly among the aging population and those with long-term anticoagulant usage, the traditional surgical avenues face limitations in recurrence rates and associated risk factors. Statins, heralded for their anti-inflammatory, vasculogenic, and angiogenic properties, are emerging as potential allies in cSDH management. Concurrently, MMA embolization offers a nuanced approach to target the neomembrane's blood supply, with evidence supporting its efficacy and safety. …

Development Of Paper-Based Electrodes For Electrochemical Detection Of Prostate Cancer Related Micrornas, Alexander Hunt
Biomedical Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Prostate cancer is a prevalent malignancy and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men globally. The early detection and monitoring of prostate cancer are crucial for improving patient outcomes and reducing unnecessary treatments. Traditional diagnostic methods, such as prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood testing and biopsies, are invasive, costly, and can lead to overdiagnosis. Additionally, PSA tests often yield false positives or negatives, and biopsies carry significant side-effects and discomforts. Therefore, there is a pressing need for novel, non-invasive diagnostic approaches. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as promising biomarkers for prostate cancer due to their dysregulation in malignant cells …

Genetic And Soil Influences On The Grapevine Rhizosphere Microbiome, Lauren M. Quackenbush
Genetic And Soil Influences On The Grapevine Rhizosphere Microbiome, Lauren M. Quackenbush
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In vineyard cropping systems, the rhizosphere microbiome arises through recruitment and filtering of the bulk soil microbiome shaped over time by soil carbon and nitrogen, climate, pH and historical legacies of vineyard management. The recruitment and filtering steps occur under the genetic influences of rootstock and scion that together drive variability in rhizosphere microbiome diversity and composition.
This study compares rhizosphere microbiomes of four Pinot Noir blocks under two rootstocks (101-14 and 420A) and four scions (777, 828, Calera, Mt. Eden). Core microbiomes were consistent across all replicates. The most abundant bacterial phyla were Actinobacteriota, Proteobacteria, and Acidobacteriota …

Next-Generation Biomedical Implants And Stimuli Responsive Soft Optical Arrays Via Surface Functionalized Elastomeric Materials, John M. Kapitan
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
The demands of emerging technologies, such as soft robotics, stretchable electronics, and next generation biomedical implants, has led to the development of diverse polymeric and hybrid organic/inorganic materials specifically tuned to meet these challenges. These materials typically have low Young’s moduli and are inert with high chemical stability. However, this has led to materials that are static in nature, lacking any meaningful way of responding to changes in their environment and adapting to these changes. This has driven a shift towards the design, manufacturing, and characterization of various stimuli responsive surfaces, relying on precise control of surface chemical coatings and …

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education is vital in producing a highly skilled and knowledgeable Malaysian workforce to meet the demand for its industries. Malaysia aims to be a developed country that initiates the technology itself instead of just being a user. Despite this ambitious goal, STEM education in Malaysia faces challenges due to low enrolment in STEM elective subjects. This declining trend is transparent in secondary school since students are given a choice to enrol in STEM education or any other stream provided. While STEM elective subjects are viewed as tough and difficult, there is a tendency that …

One of the important processes involved when a disaster happens is to allocate the victims to the navigation center. Current evacuation practices may cause further damage as the victims must wait for the rescue team to come. A self-navigation system, called Banjir Rescue, would allow the victims to save their lives and belongings sooner by determining the appropriate evacuation center. In this approach, the appropriate evacuation center is determined based on two critical parameters, which are the water level and distance. First, the near-real-time data retrieved from the water level sensor set up at the evacuation centers is sent to …

Feature selection is a vital preprocessing step for identifying the most informative features in complex datasets, enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of machine learning models. Its applications extend across various domains, including big data analytics, finance, chemometrics, medical diagnostics, biological research, intrusion detection systems, and renewable energy solutions. In medical contexts, feature selection serves a dual purpose: it reduces dimensionality while simultaneously improving the comprehension of disease etiology. This study delves into key variable selection methods—specifically Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE), Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO). We evaluate the interaction of these methods with …

The application of noninvasive genetic methods toward the field of conservation has increased our understanding of many wildlife populations that are difficult to sample, allowing for better management. In molecular ecology, the use of noninvasive sampling became widely feasible with the advent of microsatellites, a highly polymorphic, short-length marker that could be genotyped from low-quality DNA sources. Despite decades of use, many microsatellite panels continue to suffer from high genotyping error rates, allelic dropout, and limited reproducibility across laboratories. To address these issues, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) offer advantages such as lower genotyping error rates, avoidance of allelic dropout due …
