Human Evil (In The Weird), Lucas Ethridge
University Honors Theses
This paper examines a trending doom in speculative fiction: the post-human age. Many modern works have started to look past human civilization as humans surrender all hope and faith in a climate-doomed world. Honing in on core concepts in Weird fiction, this paper explores human merit through Old and New Weird. A good part spends time establishing the canon, looking at similar patterns across age, philosophy, war and genre. The chief question asks if humankind was ever worth saving.

BACKGROUND: Mitochondrial dysfunction caused by abnormally high RyR2 (ryanodine receptor) activity is a common finding in cardiovascular diseases. Mechanisms linking RyR2 gain of function with mitochondrial remodeling remain elusive. We hypothesized that RyR2 hyperactivity in cardiac disease increases [Ca 2+ ] in the mitochondrial intermembrane space (IMS) and activates the Ca 2+ -sensitive protease calpain, driving remodeling of mitochondrial cristae architecture through cleavage of structural protein OPA1 (optic atrophy protein 1).
METHODS: We generated a highly arrhythmogenic rat model of catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia, induced by RyR2 gain-of-function mutation S2236L(Ser2336Leu)(+/-) . We created a new biosensor to measure IMS-[Ca2+ ] …

Radiation-Induced Brachial Plexopathy: Current Understanding, Diagnosis, And Treatment Options, Alex G. Lambi, Tomas Holly, Ryan E. Tomlinson, Mary F. Barbe
Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers
Radiation-induced brachial plexopathy (RIBP) is a gruesome complication of cancers treated with radiation therapy around the lung and chest wall, head and neck, and breast and axilla. It can occur in an early-onset (transient) or a late-onset (chronic) fashion. The diagnosis involves exclusion of a compressive neoplastic process, either new or recurrent, and relies largely on patient symptomatology without well-validated, objective scoring systems. Treatment options remain limited as no major advances have been made to prevent or halt disease progression. This article reviews the background incidence, pathophysiology, and diagnosis of RIBP. In addition to surgical treatment options, nonsurgical modalities, often …

Patient-Centered Televisit For Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Discharge Transitions: User-Centered Design Study, Joanna Abraham, Alicia Meng, Nicolas Caravelli, Leah Traeger, May Nguyen, Vineet Arora, Valerie G Press
2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) affects approximately 16 million Americans and often results in avoidable readmissions due, in part, to medication errors and lack of education. Telehealth interventions can support medication reconciliation and inhaler education following hospital discharge for patients with COPD.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to design and prototype TELE-TOC (Telehealth Education: Leveraging Electronic Transitions of Care), a post-discharge, in-home, televisit intervention, and to map its workflow to ensure integration into the routine discharge care transition process for patients with COPD.
METHODS: A user-centered design approach across 3 phases was followed to develop and prototype TELE-TOC. Participants included …

Exploring The Intricate Relationship Between Automation And Performance In The Saudi Public Sector., Saleh Hamed Alharbi
UB Journal for Humanities
Office automation immensely enhances the working environment. Widespread technological revolution shapes Human Resource Management (HRM) practice. The most important factor in decision-making is the information on which the decision is based. Detailed and accurate information prevents erroneous decisions. This study explores the impact of the automation of HR processes on organizational performance in the public sector. Three hundred and sixteen (316) employees from the University of Tabuk participated in the study. The study used smart Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Model (smart PLS-SEM) to estimate the relationships between constructs. The results reveal that office automation has a direct impact on organizational …

Ancient Chivalry And Modern Masculinity, Henry Jones Jones
Ancient Chivalry And Modern Masculinity, Henry Jones Jones
Arkansas Liberal Arts and Humanities Day
I’m dissecting toxic masculinity in society through the lens of chivalry, as shown in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Knights were held to a code of chivalry that they used to interact with others and to wage war, a code heavily on display within the text of Sir Gawain. I’ve expanded into the fields of psychology, biology, and warfare to determine if there is a link between ancient chivalry and how men act today.
Ecology Of Subaerial Algae: Photosynthetic Capacity As A Function Of Relative Humidity In A Naturally- Occurring Association, James A. Nienow
Ecology Of Subaerial Algae: Photosynthetic Capacity As A Function Of Relative Humidity In A Naturally- Occurring Association, James A. Nienow
Georgia Journal of Science
Subaerial algae are defined by their ability to grow on surfaces exposed directly to the air. We are currently investigating the nature of the adaptations that allow these unicellular microorganisms to form rich growths in an environment subjected to repeated and prolonged periods without liquid water. It is well known from laboratory studies that at least some members of the group are able to sustain metabolic activity using water vapor at high relative humidity. However, data concerning the significance of this ability in natural populations are almost completely lacking. To help fill in this gap, we tracked the photosynthetic capacity …

'The Rest Is Silence': Reframing Stasis As Integral To Creative Practice, Corinna Di Niro, Pablo Muslera
Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai
This duoethnographic study examines the relationship between motion and stasis in creative practice through the lens of two creative educators working in postgraduate and undergraduate Creative Industries. Drawing on our combined experiences as practitioners and educators at SAE University College, we explore how creative blockages can be reframed as productive rather than problematic, challenging dominant productivity paradigms in contemporary creative industries and education. Through structured dialogic exchange, we investigate three interconnected themes: the rhythmic nature of creative practice, the pedagogical value of embracing productive stasis, and the tension between institutional timelines and creative development. We consider how encouraging SAE creative …

Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers
The complex and heterogeneous genetic architecture of neuropsychiatric illnesses compels us to look beyond individual risk genes for therapeutic strategies and target the interactive dynamics and convergence of their protein products. A mechanistic substrate for convergence of synaptic neuropsychiatric risk genes are protein-protein interactions (PPIs) in the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) complex. NMDAR hypofunction in schizophrenia is associated with hypoactivity of Src kinase, resulting from convergent alterations in PPIs of Src with its partners. Of these, the association of Src with PSD-95, which inhibits the activity of this kinase in the NMDAR complex, is known to be increased in schizophrenia. Here, …

Toward Understanding Multi-Agent Decision Making In Complex Societies, Jonathan Skaggs
Toward Understanding Multi-Agent Decision Making In Complex Societies, Jonathan Skaggs
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation investigates Multi Agent Decision Making (MADM) within Complex Societies (CS), systems of interdependent agents whose collective behaviors emerge from local interactions. Such emergent dynamics are nonlinear and difficult to predict, posing significant challenges towards understanding how individual decisions scale to societal outcomes. Existing approaches often fall short of capturing the combined attributes of CS, including asymmetry, decentralization, and adaptivity. To address this gap, we introduce new models and analyses of agent strategies that explain how cooperation and stability can arise in CS. Structured around three interrelated projects, this dissertation enhances our comprehension of MADM in CS. The research …

Exploring The Experience Of East African Immigrants With Accents In Michigan Mental Health Counseling, Ermias Kebede Tessema
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This qualitative phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of East African immigrants with accented English in Michigan mental health counseling context. The purpose was to understand how accented speech shaped communication, emotional safety, and therapeutic connection between clients and counselors. Grounded in B.F. Skinner’s theory of language learning, along with the language transfer and critical period hypothesis frameworks, the study employed semi-structured interviews with ten East African immigrant adults who had received mental health counseling in Michigan. Data analysis produced five overarching themes: (1) Accent as a Communication Barrier, (2) Counselor’s Cultural Competence, (3) Emotional Experience of Counseling with an …

A Spatiotemporal Analysis Of Population Change In Gorgonia Ventalina On Florida's Coral Reef, Michelle Mair
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
Despite significant stony coral mortality, octocoral density has increased on Florida’s Coral Reef (FCR) over recent decades. Specifically, the common sea fan, Gorgonia ventalina, has become a key component of Florida’s octocoral community. However, trends that drive G. ventalina population distribution and growth on FCR are unknown. Here, I analyzed spatiotemporal changes in G. ventalina density and colony height to investigate population variation and responses to disturbances. From 2013-2024, long-term monitoring was conducted annually along permanent belt transects at 46 sites throughout the three regions of FCR: Kristin Jacobs Coral Aquatic Preserve (Coral AP), the Florida Keys (FLK), and …

Facility Usage On The International Space Station, Justin St. P. Walsh, Rao Hamza Ali, Ryan Shihabi, Erik Linstead
Art Faculty Articles and Research
Science experiments on the International Space Station (ISS) and in future space habitats require “facilities,” as they are known to space agencies, as the core building blocks of the research capabilities they provide. Facilities are experimental apparatus that enable research, often (but not always) used for more than one experiment, such as centrifuges, furnaces, gloveboxes, freezers, and more. The US Orbital Segment of the ISS has been home to 191 such facilities, belonging to four of the five ISS international partner agencies as well as private companies, in its 25 years of continuous operation. Until now, there has been no …

Basil_Dock: Development Of Accessible And Customizable Molecular Docking Procedures, Lee Schoneman
Basil_Dock: Development Of Accessible And Customizable Molecular Docking Procedures, Lee Schoneman
Theses
Molecular docking is a computational technique often used in drug design due to its ability to predict ligand binding potential, conformation, and location for a given drug target. Docking as a screening tool also comes at a greatly reduced cost compared to wet bench work. Despite its usefulness, molecular docking is often inaccessible to novice users, as to perform molecular docking, most programs require at least a basic knowledge of command line and computer programming for both installation and utilization. Additionally, tutorials for the most popular programs tend to be inflexible, instructing how to bind predetermined molecules to a specified …

The field of social work has a lengthy history of training social workers for community mental health settings, and an ethical commitment to advance human rights and social justice. However, individuals with schizophrenia-spectrum conditions continue to suffer from myriad social injustices, including poverty, social isolation, and lower-life expectancy. This paper outlines these injustices, and reviews historical social work contributions and current training for supporting this population. Finally, the authors outline actions to 1) adopt national practice guidelines that formally acknowledge injustices, including anti-oppressive practice guidelines that are inclusive of lived experience, and 2) revitalize social work’s contributions to models of …
The Divided Self: Gothic Duality In Literature, Sarah Anna Meeks
The Divided Self: Gothic Duality In Literature, Sarah Anna Meeks
Masters Theses
Gothic literature of the nineteenth century is haunting due to its frequent use of ghosts and monsters. However, the true terror lies in a deeper horror, one that is more intimate and destabilizing– a fright that leaps out of the text, looking into the heart of the reader: the fractured mind of the self torn between reality and repression, haunted by its own, newly manifested internal disunity rather than external monsters. The characters of Gothic fiction are typically caught in a psychological turmoil. They battle with split morals between duty and desire, morality and madness, and science and spirituality. Specifically, …
