Steve Jobs, the revered techno-visionary and co-founder of Apple, once said that at the age of 22, “I knew I wasn’t ready to run a real company. But Apple was my baby, and I didn’t want to give it up.” The actual baby born when he was 23 was another matter.

Human SNCA, which encodes a-synuclein protein (SNCA), was the first gene linked to familial Parkinson's disease (PD). Since the discovery of the genetic link of SNCA to Parkinson's nearly three decades ago, many studies have investigated the normal function of SNCA protein. However, understanding of the normal function of SNCA is complicated by the lack of a reliable mammalian model of PD; indeed, mice with homozygous null mutations in the Snca gene live a normal lifespan and have only subtle synaptic deficits. Here, we report the first genetic modifier (a sensitized mutation) of a murine Snca null …

Agrogeophysics is a convergence of proximal soil sensing and hydrogeophysics in which geophysical methods are used to describe soil patterns and dynamics that shape agronomic management (including precision agriculture). To fully realize its potential for optimizing agricultural production, current barriers and targets for future agrogeophysics research must be identified. In this review, we compare the trajectory of agrogeophysics within peer-reviewed literature, patents, and the US university extension literature and examine the current challenges and opportunities for supporting agricultural production and sustainability with agrogeophysical tools. We conducted a repeatable search of Web of Science and Scopus for seven geophysical methods (electromagnetic …

This study compares the bibliographic and full-text coverage of 15 conventional and alternative discovery/access mechanisms: two multidisciplinary library databases (Scopus and the Web of Science Core Collection), five single-subject databases, the integrated library search (ILS) mechanism of Manhattan University, a scholarly search engine (Google Scholar), two web-based scholarly databases (Dimensions and OpenAlex), two academic social networks (Academia.edu and ResearchGate), and two pirate sites (Anna’s Archive and Sci-Hub). The analysis is based on known-item searches for 875 target documents in chemistry, materials science, cardiology, public health, economics, education, and psychology. Overall, Google Scholar, OpenAlex, and the ILS are the most comprehensive …

Covid-19-Related Beliefs And Dietary Behaviors Of American Undergraduate Students Vary By Race Via The Lens Of The Health Belief Model, Doreen Liou, Jong Min Lee
Department of Nutrition and Food Studies Scholarship and Creative Works
The COVID-19 pandemic caused immense physical disruptions, affecting young adults in the U.S. The Health Belief Model is a social psychological framework that predicts the likelihood of adopting health behavior. The purpose of this research is to investigate COVID-19-related health beliefs and dietary behaviors among undergraduate students during the pandemic. Using convenience sampling, a cross-sectional survey was completed by 304 individuals at a New Jersey state university. Survey data included the frequency of COVID-19 prevention behaviors (e.g., wearing an indoor mask, handwashing), and consumption of fruit and vegetables. The Health Belief Model constructs measured perceived susceptibility to COVID-19, severity, benefits, …

Simpson, Rebecca R. Sullivan, Josephine M. Dudzik, Karl L. Insogna, Jeannette M. Beasley
Department of Nutrition and Food Studies Scholarship and Creative Works
Background/Objectives: Studies have reported an increased risk of type 2 diabetes among people with higher protein intake. Moreover, branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) are reported to be positively associated with insulin resistance (IR). However, it is not understood whether elevated levels of BCAA are causal to IR development, or if higher BCAA are a marker of IR. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of long-term protein and carbohydrate supplementation on plasma BCAA levels, and the relationship between plasma BCAA and IR in postmenopausal women. Methods: Stored samples and data from 84 postmenopausal women who participated in a …

The purpose of research at SDSU is to provide reference information that represents the various populations of livestock production. Since the researcher cannot apply treatments to every member of a population, he/she must sample the population. The use of statistics allows the researcher and readers the opportunity to evaluate separation of random occurrences and real biological effects of a treatment.

Aeolus-Ds: Dust-Aware Ai Decision Support For Coccidioidomycosis (Valley Fever) — A Design Science Research Framework Integrating Aerosol Remote Sensing, Land Disturbance, And Clinical Sentinel Signals, Harsha Sammangi, Aditya Jagatha, Harshini Balaga
Research & Publications
This paper presents Aeolus-DS, a design science research (DSR) artifact that integrates aerosol remote sensing (MAIAC AOD; dust fraction), mesoscale meteorology and soil moisture (ERA5), land-disturbance telemetry (construction, off-road vehicle activity, nightlights) and clinical sentinel signals (syndromic ED chief complaints, pneumonia rule-out) into a dust-aware, AI-driven early warning and decision-support system for Coccidioidomycosis (Valley Fever). Methodologically, we propose a graph spatiotemporal transformer with direction-aware attention and physics-guided regularisation reflecting aeolian transport. Using county-week panels (2014-2024) for the U.S. Southwest (AZ–CA–NV), Aeolus-DS improves now-casting mean absolute error (MAE) by 18% and two-week area under precision-recall curve (AUPRC) by 21% over …

Consistently returning to or remaining within a specific location, a behavior known as site fidelity, is a useful metric for quantifying animal space use. When multiple individuals display similar site fidelity patterns, they are likely to interact, shaping the degree and quality of their social interactions. However, the link between the expression of site fidelity behavior and an individual’s social experience has not been thoroughly investigated. In this study we examined (1) how intrinsic individual properties (body size and sex) predicted variation in site fidelity and (2) whether site fidelity was linked to the social experience of individuals in wild …

Gis-Based Swat Modeling For Surface Runoff Assessment To Support Urban Flood Resilience In Central Java, Indonesia, Putri Amalia Sholichah Ms., Endah Sulistyawati, Susana Paulina Dewi

Surface runoff significantly contributes to environmental hazards such as floods in Indonesia, including in Borobudur District. Based on watershed delineation, the administrative area of Borobudur District is predominantly located within the Sileng Subwatershed. The rehabilitation zones managed by PT Adaro Indonesia are located in several specific areas within this subwatershed. This study utilizes the SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model integrated with GIS (Geographic Information System) to simulate surface runoff quantitaively in the Sileng subwatershed, part of the Progo watershed in Central Java Province. SWAT is applied in this research to simulate surface runoff in both watershed and …
