What Women Intercollegiate Coaches Say: Decision-Making Factors When Navigating Career Choices, Courtney Boucher, Nicole M. Lavoi

International Journal of Physical Activity and Health

To address misconceptions about the lack of women in sport coaching, factors influencing intercollegiate women coaches' career decisions, including their choices to leave positions, apply for new ones, and accept or deny job offers were explored. Utilizing a multi-level analysis underpinned by critical feminist theory, a comprehensive understanding of the systemic and structural barriers women coaches faced, as well as the strategies they employed to navigate their careers were illuminated. Key findings revealed that unequal pay, lack of administrative support, insufficient resources, and pervasive gender biases significantly impacted women's career choices. The importance of supportive workplace environments, flexible working conditions, …

Reimaging The Governance Of College Sports After Alston, John T. Holden, Marc Edelman, Thomas A. Baker Iii, Andrew G. Shuman

Florida Law Review

The summer of 2021 marked a major inflection point in the external governance of college sports after nearly half a century of federal and state governments taking a hands-off approach regarding the rights of college athletes. First, nearly all at once several states passed laws granting college athletes the right to endorse products. Next, in its first antitrust decision concerning the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) since 1984, the United States Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the NCAA’s longstanding restraints on providing unlimited educational benefits to college athletes violated federal antitrust law. Additionally, Congress began discussing the lack of medical …

Participants in this study (final sample N = 131) completed a questionnaire packet to assess their selection of teams because of uniform color. Participants provided their favorite team and demographics, then completed the SSIS, SFQ, vignette, and TAS. Results from the current study indicated that some participants selected a team based on color. Those who did select a team based on color reported that they would …

How Agency From Precollege Experiences Empowers Black Student-Athletes To Succeed And Find Belonging At Pwis: A Phenomenological Study, Deborah V. Hogan

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

In the ever-changing college football landscape, Division I (DI) student-athletes seek to maximize their athletic and financial potential while navigating the academic and social challenges of college life. For Black student-athletes (BSAs) at predominantly White institutions (PWIs), the campus racial climate shapes their college experience and sense of belonging. The current phenomenological study explores how DI Black football student-athletes (BFSAs) use agency from precollege experiences to navigate racial climates and find belonging at PWIs. Using Critical Race Theory (CRT) and sense of belonging frameworks, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 former BFSAs from DI PWIs. The study revealed three main …

Relationship Between Fluid Intake, Hydration Status And Cortisol Dynamics In Healthy, Young Adult Males, Mitchell E. Zaplatosch, Laurie Wideman, Jessica Mcneil, Jesse Sims, William M. Adams

Faculty Articles

Background: Previous studies have identified links between fluid intake, hydration related hormones and cortisol measured at one timepoint but have not considered how hydration may influence cortisol dynamics throughout the day. This study assessed associations between hydration status (copeptin, urinary osmolality, urine volume) and habitual fluid intake with cortisol dynamics.

Methods: The day before (DB) a 6-h laboratory visit, 29 male participants (age, 23±4y; BMI, 25.5 ± 4.3 kg/m2; body fat, 17.3 ± 9.3 %) provided 24-h urine samples and a fasted blood sample for hydration status assessment, recorded their 24-h fluid intake for three days prior, and provided 10 …

Undergraduate Student Decision-Making: Pursuing Graduate Studies At The Same Institution That Granted The Undergraduate Degree, Anthony C. Marziliano Jan 2025

Undergraduate Student Decision-Making: Pursuing Graduate Studies At The Same Institution That Granted The Undergraduate Degree, Anthony C. Marziliano

Theses and Dissertations

Colleges and universities are under pressure to increase enrollment and avoid attrition. It is clear that institutions need to increase efforts to work against decreasing graduate enrollment trends and focusing on students already in-place on campus may be an avenue to do so. Research is lacking concerning factors that may be related to the decision by undergraduate students to pursue graduate studies at the same institution that granted the undergraduate degree. Understanding key characteristics of the group that remains at the institution allows us to identify a student profile to focus on to increase graduate enrollment, especially in light of …

Barriers To Success In Higher Education For Second-Generation Caribbean American Men, Leonard S. Breton Jan 2025

Barriers To Success In Higher Education For Second-Generation Caribbean American Men, Leonard S. Breton

Theses and Dissertations

While the United States may be progressing, second-generation Caribbean American men, those with at least one foreign-born parent (US Census Bureau, 2016), are a population that, despite literature addressing benefits and detriments of their cultural experiences, still warrants continued examination through empirical testing (Lyttle et al., 2011). These students have a range of factors that make them nontraditional students. Challenges such as racism, sexual and ethnic identity, and generational status in this country can be compounded when cultural perspectives of immigrant families are factored in. Caribbean American men are guided by learned behaviors and cultural traditions that influence training and …

Positional Winning: The Allocation Of Payroll And Its Effects On Win Percentage In Major League Baseball, Anthony Griffith Jan 2025

Positional Winning: The Allocation Of Payroll And Its Effects On Win Percentage In Major League Baseball, Anthony Griffith

Theses & ETDs

The continued success of an organization in Major League Baseball (MLB) can be attributed to many factors, but they can get there by maximizing the money that is allocated to their payroll. We want to explore the effects that payroll can have on the winning percentage of a team based on how much they spend on certain position groups. We examine the correlations between the amount spent on position groups and winning percentage using simple scatter plots and trend lines. Thereafter, we will then predict the most effective ways to devote the payroll among positions using linear regression, multiple linear …

Relevant psychological factors that require a deeper investigation include sensation seeking (SS), personality traits, anxiety, and self-efficacy (SE). Purpose. The purpose of this research study was to examine participants' willingness to participate in a high-risk modern circus performance art …

Small Changes, Big Returns: Decision-Making And Progress Towards Equitable Service Delivery, Kourtney Blackburn, Christina Hillman

Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications

Lavery Library is the sole library for St. John Fisher University and its five schools. The university is located in a small suburb in western New York State. Over the past decade we experienced many transformational changes. Some of these changes include our parent institution’s designation moving from college to university and the expansion of hybrid and online programs. The program expansions, combined with exploring textbook borrowing and changes to library services post-Covid, propelled the library staff to reimagine Interlibrary Loan (ILL) services for distance patrons. From our first online program policies in 2012 to the present day, this chapter …
