Force Meets Feedback: Investigating The Impact Of Lissajous Visual Augmentation On Bimanual Coordination And Force Accuracy, Ananya Luthria, Madison M. Weinrich, Brock Balthazor, Jackson Wagner, Deanna M. Kennedy

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Lissajous plots are 2D visualizations that depict the interaction between two oscillating signals, illustrating their phase and frequency relationship through distinctive patterns. In the context of bimanual coordination, Lissajous plots serve as augmented visual feedback by mapping the force or motion of one limb to the x-axis and the other limb to the y-axis, providing real-time feedback on the synchronization and rhythm between the two limbs. This visual guidance helps individuals adjust their movements to achieve the desired coordination pattern, making it particularly useful in motor rehabilitation and training scenarios. PURPOSE: Determine the level of accuracy of bimanual force production …

Reliability Of Handgrip Strength Measurements And Their Relationship With Physical Performance Outcomes In Older Women, Alexandra Khartabil, Ty B. Palmer

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Handgrip strength measurements, such as peak force and rate of force development (RFD), are effective parameters at characterizing the strength capacities of numerous muscle groups in the upper and lower extremities. Previous studies have determined the reliability of handgrip peak force and RFD in young, college-aged adults. However, the reliability of these measurements in older adults remains unclear. It is also unclear if these measurements are associated with performance during sit-to-stand and medicine ball throw tests. PURPOSE: The primary aim of this study was to examine the reliability of handgrip peak force and RFD measurements in older women. A secondary …

Impact Of Years Of Experience On The Stress Responses To Firefighting, Caiti Dodge, Macilynn Coles, Annette Zapp, Ryan J. Sowinski, Steven E. Martin, Lisa C. Colvin, Matthew J. Mcallister, Drew E. Gonzalez

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Research demonstrates that firefighters (FF) experience elevated stress levels during live fire-training evolution (LFTE) scenarios, which is posited to exacerbate cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. However, whether these occupational stress response levels differ as an FF gains experience in the field has yet to be evaluated. PURPOSE: This study assessed the differences in stress response to a LFTE between FF with greater years of experience. METHODS: Forty-four (n=44) FF completed an annual clinical health assessment. Years of experience were used to delineate between less experienced (LOW; <6 years) and experienced FF (EXP). Salivary samples were collected baseline (BL), immediately post (POST), and 30- min post the LFTE and analyzed for α-amylase (AA), secretory immunoglobulin-A (SIgA), and cortisol (CORT). Data were analyzed via a general linear model (GLM) multivariate and univariate analysis. RESULTS: GLM analysis revealed an overall time effect (p<0.001, ηₚ²=0.216) with no group x time effect (p=0.796, ηₚ²=0.019) for the salivary stress biomarkers. The univariate analysis revealed time effects for AA (p<0.001, ηₚ²=0.244), SIgA (p<0.001, ηₚ²=0.261), and CORT (p=0.003, ηₚ²=0.133); however, no group x time effects were found for AA (p=0.481, ηₚ²=0.011), SIgA (p=0.817, ηₚ²=0.003), and CORT (p=0.511, ηₚ²=0.016). Immediately post-LFTE concentrations were significantly higher for AA (p<0.001), SIgA (p<0.001), and CORT (p=0.004) than at baseline. A significant group effect was found for AA (p=0.049, ηₚ²=0.089), with the LOW group having lower overall AA concentrations than the EXP group, whereas there were no group effects for CORT (p=0.427, ηₚ²=0.015) or SIgA (p=0.204, ηₚ²=0.038). CONCLUSION: These data demonstrate that years of experience do not impact the stress response to an LFTE. It is plausible that years of job experience can influence one’s ability to deal with occupational stress, yet future work should elucidate the impact of stress on CVD risk and occupational performance.

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of premature mortality in firefighters. Previous work suggests that the relationship between CVD risk and oxidative stress (OS), inflammation, poor fitness, and body composition is elevated in firefighters. Variables including body fat distribution and blood glucose and lipid profiles can be impacted by a poor fitness level. This study provides insight into the potential health benefits of maintaining occupational CRF standards in relation to variables that increase CVD risk. PURPOSE: This study investigated whether FF health profiles differ based on occupational CRF standards. METHODS: 144 FF completed an annual clinical health …

Sex Differences In Nutrient Gaps In Active Adults, Christine M. Florez, Christian Rodriguez, Philip Sapp, Jeremy Townsend, Grant M. Tinsley

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

In the United States, the estimated average requirement (EAR) for a nutrient indicates the average daily intake level estimated to meet the requirement of 50% of healthy individuals. As defined by the United States Department of Agriculture, a “nutrient gap” is evaluated by comparing dietary intakes with EAR values of specific nutrients. Nutrient intake <100% of the EAR indicates a nutrient gap. While nutrient gaps have been characterized in the general population, these gaps are less clearly established in active adults. PURPOSE: To evaluate the presence of nutrient gaps within an active, healthy population and to determine if there are sex differences in nutrient gaps. METHODS: The dietary intakes of healthy, active males (n=380 records) and females (n=301 records) were collected using the National Institutes …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Research indicates that cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk among firefighters (FF) may be influenced by factors like oxidative stress, inflammation, low fitness levels, and body composition, with age potentially playing a role in risk variation. It is well established that age is an independent CVD risk factor, but limited data exist concerning the impact of age on FF health and fitness. PURPOSE: This study assessed the impact of CRF on the stress response to a live-fire training evolution (LFTE). METHODS: 144 FF completed an annual clinical health assessment. Shapiro-Wilk Test was used to assess normality. One-way ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis …

Bioimpedance Minimally Improves Prediction Of Bone Mineral Density Beyond Demographic Information Alone, Julia A. Whitson, Christian Rodriguez, Christine M. Florez, Ethan Tinoco, Joao P. Cardoso, Jaylynn Rasco, Sieneh Francis, Grant M. Tinsley

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Bone mineral content (BMC) serves as an important indicator of osteoporosis risk. Traditional methods of BMC estimation include using demographic information within prediction equations, which draw from population trends but may not reflect individual variance in BMC. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) provides a more accurate assessment of BMC but may pose challenges in clinical settings due to certification requirements, cost, and space requirements. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) has shown promise in correlating with BMC and may offer an intriguing alternative due to its accessibility, but its efficacy compared to traditional methods remains largely unexplored. PURPOSE: Quantify the contribution of BIA …

Exploring The Incidence Of Synthetic Versus Non-Synthetic Cannabinoid-Induced Psychosis: A Scoping Review, Ruaa Al-Juboori, Zachariah Francois, Precious Patrick Edet, Marie Barnard

Faculty and Student Publications

Cannabinoids, including synthetic and non-synthetic variants, are associated with diverse mental health outcomes including the development of psychotic symptoms. While non-synthetic cannabinoids such as THC are well-studied, the stronger affinity of synthetic cannabinoids for cannabinoid receptors may lead to more severe and unpredictable health outcomes, including acute psychosis. Therefore, the objective of this scoping review is to investigate if the literature reported differences in the incidence of synthetic cannabinoid-induced psychosis versus non-synthetic cannabinoid-induced psychosis and quantify these differences if present. Following the JBI guidelines for scoping reviews, we will conduct a literature search across multiple databases including PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, …
