The Powers That Perpetuate Child Marriage In India, China, And The United States, Ava Kegler
The Powers That Perpetuate Child Marriage In India, China, And The United States, Ava Kegler
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Child marriage is a crisis that continues to be practiced in many countries around the world. This is not to discredit the progress that organizations like the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and Girls Not Brides have made to aid countries in their process of eliminating child marriage. However, the commitment to completing the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of ending child marriage by 2030 seems less achievable as we enter 2025. The question this thesis considers is why this goal is challenging to reach. While child marriage is prominent in developing nations, caused by high poverty rates, low education, …

Exploring The Development Of Mental Health Training Programs For Black And Brown Female Teens And Preteens In Illinois Nonprofits, Darryca Brim Mims
All Capstone Projects
The spread of social media has posed severe mental health issues to Black and Brown female teens and pre-teens (BBFTPTs), as they are particularly prone to cyberbullying, racial discrimination, and Eurocentric beauty ideals. This qualitative analysis explored the incorporation of negative effects of social media by Chicago nonprofits on their mental health training programs for BBFTPTs. Employing semi-structured interview methodology on seven nonprofit leaders, the research examined organizational decision-making on curriculum development within the theoretical framework of resource dependency theory, institutional theory, and change management theory. Data analysis revealed funding limitations, pressure from external stakeholders on curricular decisions, and the …
An Eye For An Eye Makes A Vigilant Society, Liam C. Preyer
An Eye For An Eye Makes A Vigilant Society, Liam C. Preyer
Capstone Showcase
Vigilantism is one of the oldest practices of mankind; for as long as there have been moral and legal laws to govern us and live by, there have been individuals who have sought justice outside these systems. Vigilantism is the response to failures in the justice system, and in the United States in particular, we have seen examples from the Western Frontier to the modern-day digital landscape. This paper will explore the nature of vigilante justice through historical, psychological, media-driven, legal, and digital lenses. We will explore how cultural narratives, media influences, government actions, and psychological motivations have shaped the …

Artistic Interventions In The Public Sphere: Keith Haring & Jenny Holzer, Matilde Sirolli
Artistic Interventions In The Public Sphere: Keith Haring & Jenny Holzer, Matilde Sirolli
MA Theses
This thesis investigates the intersection of art and the public sphere in late 1970s and 1980s New York, a period characterised by significant socio-political and cultural transformations. Grounded in Jürgen Habermas’ conception of the public sphere, the study examines how the unique historical phenomena of the period yielded unprecedented opportunities for artists to intervene in the public sphere. The research provides a comprehensive analysis of the period’s political, economic, cultural and sociological landscapes. It then delves into case studies of Keith Haring and Jenny Holzer, exploring their distinct approach to public engagement: Haring’s blend of art, commerce and populism, and …
Barriers To Spiritual Growth, Brian A. Brunke
Barriers To Spiritual Growth, Brian A. Brunke
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examined the barriers to spiritual growth among believers, analyzing biblical and theological sources alongside perspectives from additional literature. The study identified significant obstacles to spiritual development, including persecution, cultural and religious differences, conflict, lack of understanding, and worldly influences, as illustrated in the Book of Acts. Furthermore, modern challenges, such as the implications of neuroscience for spiritual formation, lifestyle choices, and cultural shifts, also contribute to these barriers. A quantitative approach was employed, utilizing an online survey to assess spiritual growth across six dimensions: commitment to God, evangelism, engagement in spiritual disciplines, pursuit of intentional relationships, stewardship, and …
Tate Speech: Radicalizing Rhetoric And Multi-Level Marketing Recruitment Strategies In The Manosphere, Carey J. Priebe
Tate Speech: Radicalizing Rhetoric And Multi-Level Marketing Recruitment Strategies In The Manosphere, Carey J. Priebe
Theses and Dissertations
My study aims to uncover the discursive elements behind the gendered recruitment strategies that influencers in the manosphere use to pipeline men and boys into their multi-level marketing (MLM) companies. In the manosphere, male supremacy is presented as desirable and subversive, and MLMs take advantage of emotional and economic instability. My study examines the Twitter (X) account of the popular manosphere influencer Andrew Tate as I trace his rhetoric along a three-pronged gendered recruitment framework, a framework originally developed around women selling essential oils online and funneling their followers into radical alt-right politics. What are the similarities and differences in …
Individual Or Shared Identity? Perceptions Of School Climate In Catholic Schools By Ethnic Background, Daniel Hamlin, Curt Adams
Individual Or Shared Identity? Perceptions Of School Climate In Catholic Schools By Ethnic Background, Daniel Hamlin, Curt Adams
Journal of Catholic Education
School climate has been routinely associated with positive student outcomes. Scholars have found that Catholic schools promote positive school climate by emphasizing shared identity and values. However, others argue that this approach serves the interests of dominant groups, producing poor school climates for minority students. To explore these claims, this study examined perceived school climate among students (n = 22,286) and parents (n = 12,997) in Catholic schools with different racial/ethnic compositions. Results indicated that students attending majority-minority (50%> and 90%>) and Hispanic-serving Catholic schools report similarly to their peers attending less diverse Catholic schools. Results from …
The Social Life Of Free Speech: Who Gets To Speak And Express?, Anurag Bhaskar
The Social Life Of Free Speech: Who Gets To Speak And Express?, Anurag Bhaskar
National Law School of India Review
The interdisciplinary scholarship on free speech, though developed outside the Indian context, underscores the necessity of re-examining free speech not just as an individual right against the State, but as a socially embedded phenomenon, conditioned by historical inequalities and prevailing systems of power. Building on this framework, this article advances an anti-caste perspective on freedom of speech and expression under Article 19(1)(a) of the Indian Constitution. It examines the contours of free speech in a heterogeneous and hierarchically structured society, interrogating how caste hierarchies have shaped the boundaries of acceptable speech, and determining whose speech is heard and whose is …

Golf is one of the leisure sports that offers various benefits and has become a popular public sport with participation from people of various age groups. A total of 262 questionnaires were distributed online, with 240 valid responses collected after excluding 22 with non-responses or partial answers. The results showed statistically significant differences in enjoyment by age group, except for recognition from others. Regarding physical health, those in their 60s and above had higher mean scores than other age groups, and those in their 50s scored higher than those in their 30s. Stress relief was greater among those in their …

In this chapter, we discuss in detail our application of case-based learning to this edited book. We take time to highlight some important differences in our approach in contrast to traditional case-based learning principles and resources and lay out our procedures for considering the content, format, and editing of this collection of stories. We also delve into our own reflexivity and positions of power as we consider our roles as editors in this project. Finally, we discuss tips for engaging with this book, while providing some general reflective questions for readers to consider while reviewing the authors’ stories about physical …

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications
Despite the growing interest in social justice activities, there is a lack of empirical evidence regarding their impact on various stakeholders, particularly social media users. We gathered longitudinal data from the NFL's @inspirechange X (former Twitter) account, a designated social justice communication handle, between August 2019 and March 2023. During this timeframe, the account garnered 20,967 comments (including original tweets and retweets) from 11,481 distinct users, but our analysis focused on 5851 comments deemed usable from 3632 unique users. Drawing on the social exchange theory, sentiment analysis, and thematic analysis, this study examines social media users' sentiments toward the NFL's …

The Legacy Of Redlining: Examining Educational Inequalities In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Emily Brennom
The Legacy Of Redlining: Examining Educational Inequalities In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Emily Brennom
Honors Program Theses
This study examines the lasting impact that redlining, a discriminatory housing practice from the 1930s, has on educational inequalities in the Cedar Rapids Community School District today. Using historical Home Owners’ Loan Corporation (HOLC) maps, it analyzes how neighborhoods located within previously “high risk” (“D” or red zones) neighborhoods correlate with present day disparities in regards to racial composition, socioeconomic status, low-income, and high school graduation rates. The research further investigates how white flight and urban disinvestment intensified racial and economic inequalities in these areas. Limitations of HOLC maps as the only measure of redlining emphasize the need for policy …

Critical Environmental Communication Framework, Shumaila J. Bhatti, Srivi Ramasubramanian, Andrea Feldpausch-Parker, Bruno Takahashi, Silje Kristiansen
Media Studies - All Scholarship
This study develops a Critical Environmental Communication (CEC) framework to assess the landscape of Environmental Communication research and to what extent and in which ways critical and justice-oriented perspectives are included. The CEC framework consists of four interconnected themes: (a) Marginalized Ecocultural Identities, (b) Context and Scale, (c) Power and Agency, and (d) Justice, Equity, Diversity, Access, and Inclusion (JEDAI). Using this framework in a bibliometric analysis examining 1,297 Environmental Communication publications, we assess the occurrence of these themes in the scholarship. Our analysis found that Marginalized Ecocultural Identities, and Context and Scale were most frequently occurring, while Power and …

Forced Migration And Women’S Empowerment: Evidence From Rohingya Refugees, Adam Chilton, Katerina Linos, Anup Malani
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
We explore a paradox: high levels of satisfaction among forcibly displaced Rohingya women in informal camps in Hyderabad, India. Despite experiencing extreme poverty, loss of family and community, and high levels of gender-based violence after resettlement, both men and women—particularly women—report significant increases in satisfaction. We structured a representative household survey, employed a trusted female Muslim interviewer with deep ties to the local community, interviewed comparable numbers of men and women, and embedded list experiments in our questionnaire, to allow people to answer sensitive questions indirectly. We attribute this paradoxical finding to increased freedom post-resettlement, facilitated by economic, legal, and …

Procréation Assistée Par Autrui Et Fragmentation De La Maternité : Le Piège Du Récit Unique, Kévin Lavoie, Isabel Côté, Roxane Guay
Canadian Journal of Family Law

Private Wrongs, Public Impact: The Case For A Tort Of Family Violence, Pahul Gupta
Canadian Journal of Family Law
This research paper investigates the adequacy of current civil actions available against a particular form of family violence: intimate partner violence (“IPV”). The paper identifies the torts which are most commonly applicable in the IPV context and argues that they fail to capture the cumulative harm associated with such conduct. It identifies the shortcomings of such causes of actions and analyzes the multifaceted factors contributing to the limitations and challenges IPV victims face when pursuing such claims.
The paper provides a brief background on the historical and legal context of family violence before moving on to identifying the various causes …

Intersecting Abuse Of People And Animals In Practice: Implications Of The Connection Between Intimate Partner Violence And Animal Abuse For Family Justice Professionals, Amy Fitzgerald, Valerie Monckton, Kerri Thomson, Kendra Coulter
Canadian Journal of Family Law
According to recent estimates, 60% of Canadian homes have at least one cat or dog, and the number continues to climb. Often considered family members, these animals are vulnerable to family violence. Their presence can also render human victims of violence more vulnerable: research indicates many victims delay leaving their abuser out of concern for their animals or consider returning to the abusive relationship because their abuser has the animal companions. Despite a substantial body of literature documenting the link between intimate partner violence (IPV) and animal abuse, research has not examined how family law professionals encounter and deal with …
Islamic Themes In Us Hip-Hop Culture, Anders Ackfeldt
Islamic Themes In Us Hip-Hop Culture, Anders Ackfeldt
Music & Performance in Muslim Contexts
Explores how Islam is produced in American hip-hop culture by both Muslims and non-Muslims
Islam has been a part of hip-hop culture since it sprang from New York’s street culture in the 1970s. Today hip-hop has evolved into a global artform with a diversity of Muslim Islamic discourses expressed. Using tools from the field of social semiotics, this book examines how Islamic themes feature in US hip-hop culture, maintaining a particular awareness that both Muslims as well as non-Muslims participate in their production.
Anders Ackfeldt analyses a collection of lyrics, sounds and images to show how Islamic themes are featured …
