Re-Fashioning The Working Woman: Using The Pattern And Decoration Movement To Create Femmage Designs On Female Work Attire, Hannah Joy Barker

Theses & ETDs

“Femmage”: or feminist collage, was defined by Miriam Schapiro and Melissa Meyer as an activity “practiced by women using traditional women's techniques to achieve their art”. In keeping with feminist ideals, their definition celebrates rather than denigrates qualities long associated with women's creativity: the personal, the collective, the decorative* Re-fashioning the Working Woman, an artistic body of work, calls out the hindrances that uniforms have imposed, undermining feminine identities, aesthetics, experiences, and empowerment. Looking to the Pattern and Decoration art movement for inspiration, my body of artwork reflects a plethora of themes that developed from this movement, including femininity, individuality, …

I Live Where You Vacation: My Life Working, Living, And Analyzing Orlando, Florida, Molly Erickson Jan 2025

I Live Where You Vacation: My Life Working, Living, And Analyzing Orlando, Florida, Molly Erickson

Theses & ETDs

This essay is derived from my interest in the Central Florida community and Disney’s eff ect on their lifestyle. The main interest was tourism's eff ect on Orlando. I used one small sociological practice, my experiences, media, and research papers, to discover more about what tourism hides in Orlando. I started by outlining my own experiences and addressing the privilege I had within the situation, then I analyzed the movie The Florida Project, which works as a good comparison to the true Florida experience for a lot of Floridians. I compared this all to the research I had done. The …

Loving-Kindness Meditation, Christianity, And The Reduction Of Implicit Sexuality Bias, Annika Fuller Jan 2025

Loving-Kindness Meditation, Christianity, And The Reduction Of Implicit Sexuality Bias, Annika Fuller

Theses & ETDs

Countless studies have found that many Chrisitan individuals hold bias towards LGBQ individuals. Many more have concluded how detrimental this bias can be towards the physical and mental well being of people who identify under the LGBQ umbrella. Studies have began to find ways to decrease implicit biases, and some have found that loving-kindness meditation can be an effective tool to reduce specifically racial bias. There is little to no research on how loving-kindness meditation can reduce implicit LGBQ bias. The purpose of this study was to fill that gap by examining if loving-kindness meditaion can reduce implicit LGBQ bias …

Breath, Body, And The Blank Page: An Autoethnographic Approach To Embodied Writing Practices In First-Year Writing, Kristen Garramone Hoffman Jan 2025

Breath, Body, And The Blank Page: An Autoethnographic Approach To Embodied Writing Practices In First-Year Writing, Kristen Garramone Hoffman

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores how somatic awareness and trauma-informed pedagogies can be integrated into the teaching of writing. Drawing from autoethnography and pedagogical theory, it proposes that writing is not a purely cognitive act but a deeply embodied process, one shaped by the physiological and psychological dimensions of lived experience. Using autoethnography as both method and praxis, the study centers the author’s experiences of trauma, grief, and healing to investigate how body-based practices such as breathwork, visualization, and mindfulness can support writing, particularly for students navigating stress, anxiety, or disconnection from their academic identities. Chapter One situates the research within literature …

Creating A Safe Space: Engaging Graduate Nursing Students In Meaningful Discourse About Racism, Mary J. Isaacson, Brandon Varilek

Journal Articles: College of Nursing

INTRODUCTION: Providing education for graduate nursing students about implicit bias, covert/overt racism in the United States has become challenging due to state and federal policies. Yet, national accrediting bodies require these concepts in doctoral level nursing curricula. While these concepts may be viewed as divisive, faculty can facilitate meaningful discourse by fostering an authentic and safe learning environment.

METHODS: This article describes a curricular revision and our approach of integrating these concepts into a doctoral level ethics course using Mezirow's Transformative Learning Theory and Kitchenham's evolution of Mezirow's theory with instrumental learning, dialogic/discourse learning, and self-reflection.

RESULTS: Students evaluations revealed …

Public Support For War And Desertion, Joshua Delaigle Jan 2025

Public Support For War And Desertion, Joshua Delaigle

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

Since the beginning of war, soldier desertion has been an issue for military leaders and the politicians supporting them. Desertion from the United States Military is defined in Title 10 of the U.S. Code Article 85 as a member of the armed forces who goes or remains absent from his or her unit or place of duty with the intent to remain away permanently (“10 U.S. Code § 885”). Desertions lessen both unit cohesion and combat readiness, potentially changing the tide of a war. For these reasons, military leaders and academic researchers have been concerned with understanding the phenomenon of …

A Cross-Cultural Analysis Of Violence Prevention Programs In Central Asia And The U.S. Education Systems, Nilufar Bobjonova

Graduate Research Papers

The rise of youth violence and aggressive behavior has become a significant public health concern, affecting individuals on multiple levels, including physical, economic, social, and psychological well-being. Given the national attention this issue has received in the United States, various prevention programs have been designed to equip children with essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes to minimize their involvement in violent activities (Higgerson et al., 2008). Preventing violence through structured programs is essential for creating safe and supportive educational environments. Schools serve as an ideal platform for implementing these initiatives, as they provide a consistent setting for teaching young individuals critical …

Multiple sclerosis (MS) affects more than two million people worldwide. Providing care for MS patients differs from providing care for other illnesses due to the early onset of the disease, a varying illness progression, and because MS patients are predominantly female. This qualitative research study applied Pearlin’s Stress Process Model (SPM) to explore MS caregiving in a homogeneous group of caregiver/patient dyads. Qualitative interviews were conducted with both MS patients and their caregivers utilizing grounded theory to explore the MS caregiving phenomenon. Pearlin’s SPM was used to evaluate the qualitative data, which provided insight into the gendered nature of the …

Adam Smith And Sympathetic Cosmopolitanism, Maria Pia Paganelli Jan 2025

Adam Smith And Sympathetic Cosmopolitanism, Maria Pia Paganelli

Economics Faculty Research

Is cosmopolitanism something to explain or is it the lack of cosmopolitanism that needs explaining? Is cosmopolitanism natural or something we need to try to achieve? Is cosmopolitanism an end result or a starting point? The answer depends on the anthropological assumptions one makes. If human beings are assumed to be isolated individuals, then cosmopolitanism is something to explain, something to be taught, a possible end result. But if human beings are assumed to be intrinsically and naturally social, then cosmopolitanism may be a starting point and what needs to be explained is its absence.

I suggest that for Adam …

Theorizing Gender And Social Movements Beyond The Binary, Nancy Whittier Jan 2025

Theorizing Gender And Social Movements Beyond The Binary, Nancy Whittier

Sociology: Faculty Books

This innovative Handbook examines how gender shapes social activism and is shaped by activism. With a unique interdisciplinary focus, it explores the effects of the gender binary on experiences of activism, considering how different movements negotiate and, at times, challenge these traditional conceptions. It then moves beyond the binary to explore how gender is challenged by contemporary movements.

Expert authors discuss the impact and limitations of the gender binary, using examples such as the MeToo movement to demonstrate how viewing men and women as separate, monolithic categories results in countless differences being overlooked. Chapters present a range of global and …

I Can See A Future… Creative Ways To Talk About Climate Change, Georgia Young Jan 2025

I Can See A Future… Creative Ways To Talk About Climate Change, Georgia Young

MESM Major Papers

Though a majority of Americans accept climate change as a reality, most people are hesitant to discuss the issue. And the implications of climate silence have far-reaching effects, including less action on climate change. This project synthesizes recent research on climate change, climate silence, and climate action to create a workbook-style zine. This tool is meant to help people who are concerned about the changing climate have generative, deep conversations about this crisis. Through a literature review, a first-person interview, and centering inclusive science communication principles, I created I can see a future: Creative ways to talk about climate change. …

The Green Advantage: An Analysis Of Open Access Publications At A Mid-Sized University, Lisa M. Rose-Wiles, Maria A. Barca Jan 2025

The Green Advantage: An Analysis Of Open Access Publications At A Mid-Sized University, Lisa M. Rose-Wiles, Maria A. Barca

Library Publications

Introduction: The escalating cost of journals, loss of access to research results, and mandates by funding agencies favor Open Access (OA). The suggestion that OA publications are cited more than those behind paywalls should appeal to faculty where citations are critical for promotion and tenure. Further, the option to publish Green OA without cost would be advantageous to faculty who lack financial support for OA publications.

Methods: We used data from Scopus to analyze field weighted citation counts (FWCI) for OA publications over 20 years in terms of OA type, document type, subject area, and subject normalized impact factor.
