Advancing Telemedicine Adoption: Insights From Health Behavior Models With A Focus On The Multi-Theory Model, Rahib K. Islam, Abigail E. Watson, Alec Robitaille, Manoj Sharma, Robert E. Davis, Joshua T. Clark, Vinayak K. Nahar

Journal of Public Health in the Deep South

Telemedicine, the use of digital communication technologies to deliver clinical healthcare remotely, has emerged as a pivotal advancement in modern medicine. By providing virtual consultations, asynchronous data transmission, and remote patient monitoring (RPM), telemedicine enhances accessibility, particularly for underserved populations, while promoting efficiency and continuity of care. As telemedicine transforms healthcare delivery, its adoption hinges on understanding health behaviors—actions influenced by psychological, sociocultural, and environmental factors. These behaviors can be categorized into preventative, illness, and risk-related actions, with established models like the Health Belief Model (HBM), Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), and Transtheoretical Model (TTM) offering insights into behavior change mechanisms. …

Overcoming Vaccine Hesitancy: Evidence From Italy During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Alessandro Del Ponte, Audrey De Dominicis, Paolo Canofari Mar 2025

Overcoming Vaccine Hesitancy: Evidence From Italy During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Alessandro Del Ponte, Audrey De Dominicis, Paolo Canofari

Political Science Faculty Articles and Research

Objectives

Here we investigate whether releasing COVID-19 vaccines at open-day events boosted Italy's vaccination campaign in 2021. This strategy exploits insights from psychology.

Study design

We built an original dataset covering 200 days of vaccination data in Italy, including “open day” events. Open-day events (in short: open days) are instances where COVID-19 vaccines were released only for a specific day at a specified location (usually, a large pavilion or a public building). Importantly, releasing vaccines through open days instead of the usual appointment channel leaves the supply of vaccines unaltered. Our dependent variables are the number of total and first …

Be Humane – Be Human Disruption Of The Covid-19 Pandemic And Future Pedagogical Practices, Amanda Walters, Sara Evers, Suzanne Shelburne, Bradley Kraft, David Hicks, Peter Doolittle

International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

The abrupt switch to online teaching and learning in response to the COVID-19 pandemic caused a disruption to the instructional practices professors and students had grown accustomed to prior to March 2020. After 18+ months of virtual instruction, many colleges and universities returned to face-to-face classrooms. In order to understand how faculty planned to use their COVID-based virtual teaching experience to inform future face-to-face instruction, 436 faculty members from colleges and universities in the mid-Atlantic and southeast US were asked to reflect on their experiences teaching during the pandemic. These faculty members were asked two questions: Considering your COVID-based teaching …

Examining How The Pandemic Impacted Opinions For Course Formats, Angela Kelling, Nicholas J. Kelling, Leebrian Gaskins Mar 2025

Examining How The Pandemic Impacted Opinions For Course Formats, Angela Kelling, Nicholas J. Kelling, Leebrian Gaskins

International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

Previous research has produced mixed results related to online courses with selection often driven by their benefits. However, some students and instructors were avoiding this format because of their drawbacks. Given that the pandemic forced a shift to online education, those reluctant individuals gained experience with online courses. Being forced into a particular format could lead to acceptance because of the experience or resentment because of the lack of choice. Therefore, it is important to examine if the pandemic altered opinions of online courses. The current study was a replication of previous pre-pandemic work (Kelling et al., 2019) and examined …

Building Cohesive Classroom Communities, Alexandra Joosse, Adam Barger Mar 2025

Building Cohesive Classroom Communities, Alexandra Joosse, Adam Barger

International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

Research shows that a cohesive classroom community, or the relationships built between students within a classroom setting, leads to a long list of positive student outcomes in higher education. This research seeks to better understand how to build cohesion in a classroom community, a goal that has become even more urgent given the student isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. It uses the tool of social network analysis, a tool particularly well suited for studying networks of relationships, to examine how two common collaborative learning techniques—small group discussions and team-based projects—affect the structure and strength of the classroom community networks …

Using Stimulated Recall And Reflection On Action With Music Studio Teachers In Higher Education, Kelly A. Parkes, Ryan Daniel

International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

This article focuses on the issue of reflection for music studio teachers in higher education. Although stimulated recall and reflection on action are well-developed research fields in classroom education settings, the application of these methods to studio teaching is rare, a form of pedagogy which is heavily influenced by the master–apprentice tradition, with many teachers engaging in this practice without any formal training. The article presents the findings associated with three different studio pedagogues reflecting on video recordings of their lessons via cooperative analysis. Each of the three pedagogues took part in a live session with the researchers where their …

Professor Oppressors: College Classrooms As Spaces Of Racist And Sexist Microaggressions, Ellen Halvorson, Jörg Vianden

International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

This article describes minoritized college students’ encounters with faculty-generated or -condoned racial and gender microaggressions in college classrooms. The Racial Microaggressions Model (Pérez Huber & Solorzano, 2015) and the Taxonomy of Gender Microaggressions (Capodilupo et al., 2010) were used to inform the experiences of microaggressions of 88 college students with minoritized identities at seven institutions around the U.S. Based on the findings, the authors delivered recommendations for teaching and learning in four areas: faculty awareness and training; classroom management; policy, assessment, and evaluation of teaching; and improved mechanisms for student feedback.

Institutional Racism In The Discretionary Legalization Of Marijuana, Gary D. Brinker, Haoyang Liu Mar 2025

Institutional Racism In The Discretionary Legalization Of Marijuana, Gary D. Brinker, Haoyang Liu

Times Talk Archive & ADP Projects

Dr. Gary Brinker and Haoyang Liu will present their research on a conceptthey call “discretionary legalization of marijuana.” Critical race researchershave found strong evidence that many police officers practice“discretionary arrest,” for example pulling drivers over for being black andconducting unjustified searches, while only pulling white drivers over forviolations and ignoring any evidence of marijuana use. Their research showsthat the states with larger African-American populations, particularly thosesuspected of practicing discretionary arrest, are less likely to legalizerecreational marijuana, supporting this theory.

Digital Multimodal Composing In An L2 Italian Classroom: The Effects Of Digital Video Projects On Students’ Development And Investment, Francesca Marino Mar 2025

Digital Multimodal Composing In An L2 Italian Classroom: The Effects Of Digital Video Projects On Students’ Development And Investment, Francesca Marino

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Despite the calls for integrating digital multimodal composing (DMC) into second language (L2) pedagogy, learners’ gains in terms of L2 development beyond writing remain largely unexplored. Additionally, while research points to the potential of DMC to promote students’ engagement and motivation in the L2 classroom (e.g., Hava, 2021; Hull & Nelson, 2005; Shin & Cimasko, 2008), learners’ investment (Darvin & Norton, 2015, 2023; Norton, 1995) in L2 learning through DMC has been underrepresented in previous literature. In addition, DMC research on investment until now has almost exclusively focused on the learning of English as a foreign or second language (e.g., …

Towards A Realistic View Of Consumer Behaviour, Rod Sheaff Mar 2025

Towards A Realistic View Of Consumer Behaviour, Rod Sheaff

Peninsula Medical School

Marginal utility (MU) theories of consumer demand assume that consumers try to maximise a generic benefit (‘utility’) by selecting purchases giving equal marginal utility per unit of cost, from which are predicted the observed relationships between price changes and quantities of demanded consumer goods. Attempts to remedy the explanatory shortcomings of MU theory usually supplement it with additional assumptions. This paper proposes taking that approach to its logical conclusion by using consumer and psychological research findings not to supplement but to replace the concept of utility entirely with realistic explanations of consumer behaviour.

Community-Driven Policy Solutions To Police Accountability, Rashawn Ray Mar 2025

Community-Driven Policy Solutions To Police Accountability, Rashawn Ray

Brookings Scholar Lecture Series

George Floyd’s death shifted public opinion as 76% of Americans agreed that incidents such as the killing of Floyd are signs of racism within law enforcement. While police reforms such as implicit bias training and body-worn cameras gained public support, they insufficiently address the structural, cultural, and organizational components of policing that can obstruct accountability and contribute to racial disparities in policing. In this lecture, Brooking Senior Fellow Rashawn Ray presents interview, survey, social media, and virtual reality data with police officers, activists, and civilians, and demonstrates state- and city-level databases on police reform legislation. Ray posits that evidence-based policy …

Younger Grandparents Provide Less Support To Their Grandchildren Now Than In The Past, But Support Among Older Grandparents Has Remained Stable, Hyeonji Cho Mar 2025

Younger Grandparents Provide Less Support To Their Grandchildren Now Than In The Past, But Support Among Older Grandparents Has Remained Stable, Hyeonji Cho

Population Health Research Brief Series

Grandparents in the U.S. provide extensive support to their children and grandchildren, in the form of both financial assistance and childcare. But recent demographic changes (e.g., later childbirth, population aging) have postponed and extended the duration of grandparenthood, raising questions about whether these changes affect how grandparents support their grandchildren. This data slice uses data from the 2002-2022 Health and Retirement Study to examine the changes in grandparent support to grandchildren by age group in the U.S. The author finds that while younger grandparents are providing less support now than in the past, support has remained steady or even increased …

Social Bulimia And The Deportation Pipeline In New York City, David C. Brotherton, Sarah Tosh

Publications and Research

Twenty-seven years after the IIRAIRA in New York City, that iconic destination of migrants has undergone extraordinary challenges to its status as a welcoming refuge to the tired and teeming masses of the globe. In this article, based on recent qualitative and quantitative research, we trace the policing of its migrant communities as the U.S. state has resorted to increasingly punitive measures to regulate the lives of non-citizens regarded as deportable aliens within the rubric of contemporary immigration laws. Findings from the research show that while the city with its long history of immigrant advocacy has in part resisted the …
