Rescue Of Memory, Samuel P. Oliner, Ronnie Swartz
Rescue Of Memory, Samuel P. Oliner, Ronnie Swartz
Trade & Scholarly Monographs
What motivates people to help, to care, to risk their own lives for others? What differentiates rescuers, helpers, carers, and bystanders?
There is no single explanation. Anyone who offers you a single explanation of why people do good things is oversimplifying. Empathy is very important. So is courage. And compassion. Bystanders, I want to impress on you, are not evil people; they are not people who should be put in a ship and sent to outer space. They are also good human beings, but they have not internalized some of the ethics of caring, of social responsibility, of knowing. They …
The Minister’S Midlife Quest: A Relational Coaching Framework, Esther E. Edwards
The Minister’S Midlife Quest: A Relational Coaching Framework, Esther E. Edwards
Doctor of Leadership
Midlife arrives with a tsunami of life transitions and a myriad of internal shifts that need processing. Furthermore, the lengthening lifespan, negative impacts of ageism and inadequate framing of midlife’s intention can leave the midlife journeyer unaware of the deep transformation, fresh purpose, and future prospects that God intends the journey to bring.
Ministers are no exception to this journey. However, they contend with the unique pressures of being a constant Godly example for others often with few trusted relationships to authentically process with. In addition, many lack the necessary awareness of tools that foster strategic approaches to weathering transitions …

Publications and Research
This study aims to explore the everyday life and health information behavior of people who inject drugs (PWID) in Bangladesh, as well as the effectiveness of HIV and STI informational programs in promoting safe injecting and sexual behavior. The study received 97 completed survey responses and conducted two focus group discussions (FGDs) with 13 PWID. Using de Certeau's everyday life practices framework, the study aims to understand the tactical information strategies of PWID in the context of a developing country where access to government services and trust in authorities may be significantly limited among marginalized populations. PWID's information needs focused …

Re-Member The Time: Informed Engagement Through Embodied Memory Among Queer Black Greek Letter Organization Members, Shawna Patterson-Stephens, Antron Mahoney, Charles Stephens
Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education
This study examines the reflexivity of queer BGLO members after graduation and how they made meaning of their involvement when considering encounters with past critical incidents. The authors observed how queer-identified members of Black Greek-lettered organizations navigated opportunities for campus engagement in spaces prone to present heteronormative attitudes. The authors explored how queer-identified members of Black Greek-lettered organizations navigated the processes of identity development and meaning making in spaces prone to presenting heteronormative attitudes. This work is salient because it illustrates the development of subcultures within Black counterspaces in the postsecondary sector. These analyses explicate Black queer folx’s capacity to …
Take A Risk Or Play It Safe? Views Held By Student-Athletes, Russell D. Ravert, Marissa K. Turner, Wenting Sun
Take A Risk Or Play It Safe? Views Held By Student-Athletes, Russell D. Ravert, Marissa K. Turner, Wenting Sun
Journal of Athlete Development and Experience
Because assessing and managing risks is an integral part of sports, athletes may develop general beliefs regarding taking and avoiding risks that they draw upon. This qualitative study used inductive content analysis of survey responses to examine risk-related experiences and attitudes in sample of U.S. NCAA Division I college student-athletes (N = 101) from a variety of sports. Participants were asked to describe situations they experienced that required deciding whether or not to take risks, and to describe their “personal philosophy” on taking risks and playing it safe. Thematic analysis identified five situational contexts in which the student-athletes said …

The Dual Demands Of College Student-Athletes: A Qualitative Exploration Of Contributors And Barriers To Academic And Athletic Success, Kayleigh Hart, Leilani Madrigal, Alison Ede, Janaina Fogaca
Journal of Athlete Development and Experience
College student-athletes perform at high levels in school and sport. Previous studies have found academic barriers (e.g., time management) and contributors (e.g., academic center supports; Hardin & Pate, 2013), but there is a need to investigate factors that impact success for athletic and academic pursuits in tandem. In the present study 176 college student-athletes across nine institutions and 18 sports answered the following: What do you feel contributes to your success (1) in school? (2) in your sport(s)? What do you feel is a barrier to your success (3) in school? (4) in your sport(s)? Themes were categorized as intrinsic …

Determinants Of Interorganizational Employee Mobility: Systematic Literature Review, Iva Zdrilić, Petra Došenović Bonča, Darija Aleksić
Economic and Business Review
This article provides a comprehensive overview of the determinants of interorganizational employee mobility and proposes their multilevel typology across different sectors and industries. We conduct a systematic literature review of 158 papers in this field. Our results show that some determinants of employee mobility also appear as mobility effects, closing the ``determinants–interorganizational employee mobility–effects'' circle. They also show a hierarchy among mobility determinants, different types of interorganizational mobility, and different effects when mobility occurs between competing and cooperating organizations. This study primarily contributes to the career development literature, which recognizes interorganizational mobility as the primary mechanism for achieving individual work–life …

The Southern Miss Bower Academic Center: A Recent Academic Library-Athletics Partnership, Blake Denton
The Southern Miss Bower Academic Center: A Recent Academic Library-Athletics Partnership, Blake Denton
Faculty Publications
In 2019, A. Blake Denton published a literature review that identified and described 35 partnerships between academic libraries and athletics programs at higher education institutions in the United States, 20 of which were established for library marketing and development purposes. Recognizing that the literature documenting marketing and development partnerships was dated, he published a study in 2021 that provided updated, more comprehensive accounts for eight participating institutions and an analysis of the evolving nature of their relationships over time. This third article analyzes the partnership at the University of Southern Mississippi that resulted in the relocation of the athletics program’s …

Enhancing Clinical Training Through Community Engagement, Tammy Taylor, Jan Thornton, Jeff Spears
Enhancing Clinical Training Through Community Engagement, Tammy Taylor, Jan Thornton, Jeff Spears
Transforming Communities
Practice courses in the field of social work use a student only approach to roleplaying. This traditional approach to developing clinical skills fails to incorporate feedback from seasoned professionals in the field. Utah State University is a land-grant institution educating social workers across the state. In two generalist practice classes, faculty incorporated twenty-four licensed clinical therapists to observe and provide real feedback on various therapeutic modalities to MSW students. Students reported an appreciation for the feedback provided and more confidence in their clinical skills. Community partners felt a sense of contribution to knowledge in developing the clinical social workers of …

Glotopolítica, Identidad Y Lenguas En México En El Siglo Xxi, Marilyn S. Avalos Huesca
Journal of Maya Heritage
Languages, like human beings, have been adapting to the changes produced worldwide, and with this they have grown in number of speakers or disappeared forever from society. These changes are not given arbitrarily, but are conceived from politics and the State, where what should be the best for the speakers, nationalism and society permeates according to the statutes established by those in power. All this from an ethnocentric point of view, which denigrates what is different, what we do not understand, and therefore, we reject. This article analyzes the presence of languages in Mexico from a point of view related …

Journal of Ocean and Coastal Economics
Learning from experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic, this study aims to recommend strategies for local economic sustainability to achieve resilient coastal settlement goals. A literature review was conducted as a preliminary to obtain an overview of the economic strategies carried out by coastal communities during the pandemic, the variables of resilient coastal settlements, government programs in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, and research gaps related to local economic sustainability. This study used a questionnaire distribution method to collect data. The data were then analyzed using a triangulation method that compared the variables of coastal settlement’s resilience, government programs, and potential …

Constraining The Executive Branch: Delegation, Agency Independence, And Congressional Design Of Judicial Review, Jennifer L. Selin, Pamela J. Clouser Mccann
Northwestern University Law Review
While scholarship examining the relationship between Congress, federal agencies, and the judiciary reveals variation in the statutory details that affects administrative and judicial decision-making, few studies explore the extent to which congressional delegation decisions balance both the substantive and procedural independence of agencies against the possibility of the federal judiciary’s review of administrative action.
This Article enhances scholarly understanding of delegation by providing a qualitative, theoretical, and empirical account of the circumstances under which Congress manipulates federal agency exposure to the federal judiciary. Ironically, combined with statutory provisions dictating agency independence, increasing an agency’s exposure to unelected federal judges can …
Racial Discrimination In Retailers' Willingness To Accept Returns: A Field Study, Meirav Furth-Matzkin
Racial Discrimination In Retailers' Willingness To Accept Returns: A Field Study, Meirav Furth-Matzkin
Northwestern University Law Review
Black Americans have long faced discriminatory treatment while shopping in retail establishments, including, most notably, being subjected to increased surveillance, inconsistent pricing, and inferior customer service. Little attention, however, has been paid to other post-purchase aspects of retail transactions. Specifically, do Black Americans receive the same treatment as white customers when it comes to performing sellers’ formal policies or contracts? While it is understood that salespeople are often given discretion to deviate from standard form contracts, sometimes departing from the literal terms to satisfy consumers, there has been a notable absence of systematic exploration into how salespeople exercise this authority …

Scholars need to ponder research themes and directions for future human geographics and for those studying human geographics of the future. Geographers in the next century will continue to study familiar themes, including landscapes, environments, regions, diffusions, interactions, and places at all scales (personal to extraterrestial) within social, economic, political, and cultural contexts. Ten research themes are suggested for future inquiry. These include internationalizing economic geography, information and communications, timespace convergence, networks and networking, administrative organization and reorganization, postindustrial economies and societies, quality of life and welfare issues, including survival, and the human intellect and spirit. Pioneering research in these …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study focuses on heritage preservation efforts led by Wimauma community members interested in preserving the history and heritage of Wimauma’s Bethune Area—a historically African American community. This study aims to challenge the dominant narratives of Wimauma that erase/silence the tangible and intangible legacy of the Bethune Area. By collecting and drawing upon oral histories from community residents; engaging in participant observations; conducting archival research, my thesis will strive to construct an expanded narrative of Wimauma to include the history and heritage of the Bethune Area and the everyday lives of underrepresented people and families who helped shape Wimauma. Journal of Student Financial Aid
Previous scholars investigating the effects of student loan debt have conducted survey analyses involving large samples to examine the relationships among debt forgiveness, loan repayment behavior, income earnings, and returning home. Fewer works have explored the outcomes of student loan elimination in a qualitative study. In 2019, Robert Smith donated a Gift (RSGift) to the graduating class of Morehouse College, which eliminated the new graduates’ student loan debt, inviting further inquiry into their developments since receiving the gift. This study employs a qualitative investigation to examine how student loan elimination influenced the graduating classes. This study also applies Yosso’s Community …

Lgbtq+ Identity Development And Individual Vs Group Psychotherapy Experience: A Consensual Qualitative Analysis, Aileen Marie Rands
Theses and Dissertations
Multicultural topics, such as LGBTQ+ experience, have accrued predominance within the field of psychology. It has become clear that better understanding minority experience is of utmost importance. Pervasive stigma, discrimination, and mistreatment culminate into minority stress; thus LGBTQ+ individuals face greater risk for poor mental health and seek out psychotherapy at higher rates. Despite this reality, limited psychotherapy research exists in this area generally and essentially no research has looking into the experience of LGBTQ+ individuals in group therapy. The current study investigated experiences of LGBTQ+ clients who have participated in both individual and group psychotherapy. Eleven participants were interviewed …

Heart failure (HF) remains a significant health challenge globally, placing a heavy burden on individuals, families, and healthcare systems. The prevalence of HF continues to rise, posing substantial public health concerns. This burden is particularly pronounced among the Black Population, who face higher prevalence, earlier onset, and greater severity of HF compared to other racial and ethnic groups. This review explores the multifaceted landscape of HF in Black individuals by examining epidemiological patterns, pathophysiological mechanisms, clinical presentations, treatment disparities, and clinical outcomes. Black individuals exhibit distinct pathophysiological characteristics, such as genetic variations contributing to heightened susceptibility and severity of HF. …

Music Festivals And Individualized Sociality: Investigating The Experience Of Solo Festival Attendees, Bernadette Quinn, Maarit Kinnunen, Antti Honkanen
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
The growing individualisation of society has long been a topic of discussion, with ongoing debates querying the implications for social connectivity. However, these debates have yet to substantively connect with the festivals literature and this oversight needs redress. While festivals have long been prized for their collective sociality, a small minority of people attend on their own. This paper reports findings from a music festival audience survey which found that 3% attended predominantly alone. The findings emphasise that aloneness exists within the sociality of the festival. They further suggest that festivals can constitute safe spaces enabling solo attendees to feel …
