Fieldnotes of a Black Woman Scholar: Research, Culture, and Wellness

In this episode of Writing What I Like: Fieldnotes of a Black Woman Scholar, Dr. Mildred Boveda (YouTube: @mboveda) and I are joined by Dr. Raymond Adams, a Black male social work professor whose research sheds critical light on prostate cancer and the health experiences of Black men. Dr. Adams brings a powerful voice to the intersection of public health, wellness, and academic life—unpacking the ways that systemic inequities shape Black men’s access to care, and how his scholarship is both a personal and political act of resistance. Together, we explore how Black men navigate wellness in the context of …

Background Autistic people commonly have physical and mental health conditions. They also frequently experience barriers to accessing healthcare, contributing to problems identifying and treating health conditions. These factors may lead to increased and earlier morbidity and lower average life expectancy for autistic people. Health checks specifically designed for autistic people, incorporating adjustments to healthcare, may help to overcome these barriers and reduce health inequalities. This trial aims to investigate the clinical and cost-effectiveness of a primary care health check for autistic adults and explore factors related to implementation such as acceptability and feasibility of delivery. The trial is co-designed and …

Background: Black and Hispanic prostate cancer (PCa) survivors, who face a high burden of comorbid conditions and often engage in low levels of physical activity and healthy eating, remain significantly underrepresented in lifestyle intervention studies.

Purpose: Given the significance of spousal influence, we developed a culturally tailored lifestyle intervention for these survivors and their spouses and assessed its feasibility, acceptability, and impact on behavioral change.

Methods: Survivor-spouse couples were randomly assigned to an intervention group (n = 22), which received 12 health-coaching calls over 6 months, or a usual-care control group (n = 9). Assessments were conducted at baseline (T1), …

School of Health Professions

Job stress among child welfare professionals affects their mental and physical health and is associated with negative outcomes. Researchers have used self-report measures to document the stress experienced by those in the child welfare field, and this is the first study to use biometric technology across 72 h to identify physiological indicators of stress, recovery, and sleep in frontline child welfare workers in mostly rural areas (n = 32). A stress profile of the participants is presented on their heart rates, mean time-stressed, percent of time stressed, mean time relaxed, percent of time relaxed, mean sleep time, mean RMSSD in …

Universal Asset Building: New Social Policy For A New Era, Michael Sherraden, Jin Huang, Li Zou

Center for Social Development Research

This Perspective explores the concept of universal asset building, beginning with Child Development Account policy, as a new paradigm in social policy, suggesting that it will be a positive social-policy strategy for navigating the information age, and especially artificial intelligence (AI). Universal asset building can address social and economic challenges posed by rapid technological advancements.

The Perspective is adapted from a keynote address given by Michael Sherraden (with Jin Huang and Li Zou) at the joint convening of the 2024 Annual Academic Conference for the Social Policy Research Committee of the Chinese Sociological Association and the 19th International Symposium on …

Multilevel Peatland Governance: Exploring The Policy Impact Among Local Actors In Shaping Peatland Policy Intervention In Indonesia, Alfajri Alfajri, Helena Varkkey, Patrick O'Reilly, Tengku Adeline Adura

Forest and Society

Indonesia established the Peatland Restoration Agency (BRG, now BRGM) in 2016 to address land and forest fire issues through measures to develop and strengthen the implementation of policies to restore some part of the 24 million hectares of the country's damaged peatlands. BRGM was presented as a response to the transboundary haze issue and was applauded globally, with substantial success claimed in delivering changes in local land management behaviours. However, limited detailed analyses have been conducted regarding how the BRGM programme is implemented. Employing concepts drawn from work exploring multilevel governance strategies and actor-network theory (ANT), we explore how the …

Treatment Of Seizures In People With Intellectual Disability, Lance Watkins, Michael Kinney, Rohit Shankar Jan 2025

Treatment Of Seizures In People With Intellectual Disability, Lance Watkins, Michael Kinney, Rohit Shankar

Peninsula Medical School

There is a synergistic relationship between epilepsy and intellectual disability (ID), and the approach to managing people with these conditions needs to be holistic. Epilepsy is the main co-morbidity associated with ID, and clinical presentation tends to be complex, associated with higher rates of treatment resistance, multi-morbidity and premature mortality. Despite this relationship, there is limited level 1 evidence to inform treatment choice for this vulnerable population. This review updates the current evidence base for anti-seizure medication (ASM) prescribing for people with ID. Recommendations are made on the basis of evidence and expert clinical opinion and summarised into a Traffic …

Suicide Exposure In The Army National Guard: A Three Manuscript Dissertation, Rebecca Willis-Nichols Jan 2025

Suicide Exposure In The Army National Guard: A Three Manuscript Dissertation, Rebecca Willis-Nichols

Theses and Dissertations--Social Work

Between 2000-2022, the U.S. suicide rate increased 36% with one death now occurring every 11 minutes (CDC, 2024). Despite the Department of Defense making a concerted effort to curb the suicide increases in their ranks, the rates have continued to rise. Active-duty component rates have slowly increased since 2011 while reserve and guard components have held steady (U.S. Department of Defense, 2023). After adjusting for age, the suicide rate in the veteran population was 57% greater than the civilian population in 2020 (CDC, 2024). There is a need for a better understanding of the impact of these deaths and the …

Labor And Environment Entwined: A Radical Green New Deal And Just Transition In Applachia, Anne Marie Lofaso, Nicholas F. Stump Jan 2025

Labor And Environment Entwined: A Radical Green New Deal And Just Transition In Applachia, Anne Marie Lofaso, Nicholas F. Stump

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

In this Article, Professor Lofaso and Professor Stump propose a genuinely transformative Green New Deal and Just Transition in Appalachia. The Article opens by tracing the long history of the Appalachian labor and environmental movements. Next, the Article interrogates the common contention that the Appalachian environmental and labor movements are opposed. While this contention has substantial truth, more complex forces have been at work in the region. Fossil fuel industry elites, for instance, have wielded exaggerated “jobs versus environment” rhetoric to maximize profits and quash emergent solidarities among local workers, residents, and activists.

This Article contends that a key solution …

Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship

Purpose: Few studies have examined the relationship between IPV victimization and mental health outcomes and the moderating role of ACEs in this relationship among Jamaican women. Using trauma theory to undergird this study, we examined the relationship between physical IPV victimization and depressive symptoms and anxiety while accounting for the moderating effects of ACEs on these relationships among Jamaican women.

Methods: Univariate and ordinary least squares regression (OLS) analyses were performed using data from the 2016 National Women’s Health Survey, a nationally representative sample of Jamaican women aged 15 to 64.

Results: Experience of physical IPV victimization was found …
