Synthesising Les Mills’ Five Key Elements: How Readiness-To-Hand Is Developed Among Group Fitness Coaches, Manuel R. Enverga Iii

Economics Department Faculty Publications

This paper examines the process by which Les Mills group fitness instructors in the Philippines develop a seemingly effortless coaching style. They simultaneously perform exercises alongside their participants, correcting and motivating them, while maintaining awareness of the music playing. Using ethnographic data from a local Philippine gym, pseudonymously referred to as The Fit Stop, it is argued that the apparent naturalness of their teaching develops through numerous stages of practice and feedback. Throughout the process, instructors gain mastery over what Les Mills calls the Five Key Elements of instruction: choreography, technique, coaching, connection, and performance. As they become more adept, …

Technology As The Sovereign: A Dual-Path Model Of Managers’ Prioritization Of Technical Tasks, Hesheng Huang Jan 2025

Technology As The Sovereign: A Dual-Path Model Of Managers’ Prioritization Of Technical Tasks, Hesheng Huang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Competitive pressures challenge managers to navigate a multitude of responsibilities. On the basis of Vancouver and colleagues’ (Vancouver et al., 2010; Ballard et al., 2016) multiple-task pursuit framework, Sherf, Venkataramani, and Gejendran (2019) theorized that when faced with competition between technical tasks (e.g., getting things done, meeting assigned goals, promoting quality or accuracy of work, satisfying customer demands, and fulfilling technical responsibilities) and justice tasks (e.g., evaluating employees’ performance, recognizing employees’ achievements, and allocating rewards), managers tend to prioritize technical tasks over justice tasks under high workload demands. On this basis, I aim to examine a model that encompasses the …

Degradation Of Radioactive Waste Encapsulation Of Bao−Feox−P2o5 Glass Evaluated From Electrical Conductivity, Kazuki Mitsui, Nobuyasu Nishioka, Hiromichi Takebe, Richard K. Brow, Akira Saitoh

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report on the electrical conductivity of barium iron phosphate glass, a candidate for radioactive waste encapsulating glass. The glass composition has been optimized for slow dissolution in hot water because the precipitation of a stable hydration layer of FeO(OH) on the glass surface enhances the water durability of the glass. The mechanism of electrical conductivity of the glass is assumed to be an electron hopping between the electronic energy levels of Fe (II) and Fe (III) ions, obeying the electron carrier generation of Fe (II) → Fe (III) + e−. The electrical conductivity of the base glass was ∼3.2 …

The Organization Of Serotonergic Fibers In The Pacific Angelshark Brain: Neuroanatomical And Supercomputing Analyses, Skirmantas Janušonis, Ralf Metzler, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Serotonergic axons (fibers) are a universal feature of all vertebrate brains. They form meshworks, typically quantified with regional density measurements, and appear to support neuroplasticity. The self-organization of this system remains poorly understood, partly because of the strong stochasticity of individual fiber trajectories. In an extension to our previous analyses of the mouse brain, serotonergic fibers were investigated in the brain of the Pacific angel shark (Squatina californica), a representative of a unique (ray-like) lineage of the squalomorph sharks. First, the fundamental cytoarchitecture of the angel shark brain was examined, including the expression of ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba1, …

Despite record efficiencies, the wide adoption of silicon heterojunction is hampered by higher costs and uncertainties in long-term performance. Although recent publications report performance loss rates comparable to other field-deployed cSi technologies, the limited availability of field data and the dispersion in performance degradation results - particularly in open-circuit voltage - remain significant concerns. Various factors, including bulk and interfacial defects, charge carrier recombination dynamics, and environmental stressors such as temperature and humidity, contribute to this degradation. Understanding the mechanisms behind the open circuit voltage degradation as well as the kinetics involved is essential for developing mitigation strategies that enhance …

Academic dishonesty and how to address it are common concerns across higher education disciplines, but engineering students admit to higher rates of academic dishonesty than other students. However, first-year students may be particularly receptive to prevention efforts. Considering self-perception, social norming, and behavioral choice theories, we hypothesized that 1.) Students who perceived themself as ethical and more knowledgeable of the consequences for misconduct would be less likely to self-report cheating and 2.) Students who perceived cheating and plagiarism to be common would be more likely to self-report cheating. For this study, freshmen engineering students (N=703) reported their self-perception, perception of …

Bloody Sunday, Bloody Ireland, Bloody Textiles, Catherine Harper Phd

Arts and Design

The fabric of the island of Ireland is marked by the leakage of persistent sores and unhealed wounds borne by the unhealed messy flesh of the national body, which is symbolically swaddled, shrouded, stifled and sheltered by cloth. Ireland is a stained and bloodied cloth, marked irreversibly by conflict and abuse, bloodied by repression and denial, sullied by hunger and history. Blood, flowing from stigmata onto cloth, haemorrhage in extremis from wounds, real or imagined, is steeped deep into the Irish psyche, reflecting a narrative of abjection, sacrifice, memory and mourning.

An Empirical Assessment Of New Jersey's Mistaken Imprisonment Act, Jeffrey Gutman Jan 2025

An Empirical Assessment Of New Jersey's Mistaken Imprisonment Act, Jeffrey Gutman

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In their article “Compensation for the Convicted Innocent in New Jersey: Problems and Recommended Solutions,” Professors D. Michael Risinger and Lesley Risinger masterfully recount the history and flaws of New Jersey’s Mistaken Imprisonment Act.1 The professors recommend concrete and common-sense amendments to the Act that, if enacted, would resolve statutory ambiguities, remedy bad public policy, and make more generous an Act intended to benefit the wrongfully convicted, but which often falls short of that goal.

This article will provide empirical and comparative context for the Risingers’ proposals. By examining why the claims of exonerees had been denied or never made, …

Agency Delay And The Courts, Aram A. Gavoor, Steven A. Platt Jan 2025

Agency Delay And The Courts, Aram A. Gavoor, Steven A. Platt

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Administrative delay plagues the modern regulatory state, yet scholars and courts lack a coherent framework for analyzing when delay becomes unlawful and how to remedy it. This Article provides the first comprehensive examination of judicial oversight of agency delay, tracing the evolution from common law mandamus through the delay provisions of the Administrative Procedure Act. It reveals critical distinctions between these mechanisms that courts have increasingly elided, leading to doctrinal confusion and ineffective remedies. On account of the second Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency initiatives, this topic takes on unprecedented urgency because administration policies to reduce workforce and restructure …

Justice Delayed By Design: The Harms Of Our Protracted Divorce System, Laurie S. Kohn Jan 2025

Justice Delayed By Design: The Harms Of Our Protracted Divorce System, Laurie S. Kohn

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Divorce is the termination of a legal relationship. It is necessary for the enforceable division of property and debts between spouses as well as for remarriage. However, it’s not simply a lawsuit. Instead, it most often involves a seismic shift in the very foundations of life and, as such, frequently provokes, exacerbates, and exposes insecurities, instabilities, and vulnerabilities. This legal process also involves a unique relationship between litigants who are former intimate partners—often co-parents—and who are largely unrepresented and therefore engaged in a new form of relationship as opposing parties to a lawsuit. Given these complex dynamics, one might hope …

Circuit Capture And The National Court Of Appeals, John P. Collins Jr.

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

We are facing a crisis of confidence in our federal courts. Polarization in the judicial selection process and partisanship in judicial decision-making have yielded a steep decline in the public’s trust of the judicial branch. Much of the blame lies with the Supreme Court, whose repeated ethical scandals and aggressive rightward tilt have renewed calls for major court reform—from court packing to jurisdiction stripping, from term limits to lottery dockets, and much more in between. But the Supreme Court is not the only court in need of reform. The vast majority of cases go no further than the thirteen U.S. …
