Project Title: Empowering Staff Wellbeing: A Team-Based QI Initiative
Keywords: Burnout, wellbeing, DNP, primary care, QI methodology
Background and Rationale: The consequences of burnout in healthcare are alarming: worse patient outcomes, lack of continuity of care, higher turnover, and increased cost to employers. Many studies of burnout and wellbeing of clinicians focus on larger institutions such as hospitals and Federally Qualified Health Centers. Over the past several years, burnout has been discussed among our small, eight-person clinician team working in a small, non-profit primary care clinic. Yet, there has been no formal assessment of the level of burnout among …
The Digitization Of Asylum: The Legal And Ethical Implications Of Ai Use Within Migration Governance, Myla Somersall
The Digitization Of Asylum: The Legal And Ethical Implications Of Ai Use Within Migration Governance, Myla Somersall
Switzerland: International Studies and Multilateral Diplomacy
This paper critically examines the blossoming integration of artificial intelligence (AI) within European asylum systems, demonstrating the interplay between operational efficiency and state obligations for human oversight. Case studies from Germany, the Netherlands, and Italy, where AI software, including DIAS (language recognition), Casematcher (filtered case comparisons), and S.I.N.D.A.C.A (speech-to-text transcription) reveals technology’s ability to streamline and enhance asylum processing. Imbalanced success in facilitating similar technologies across Europe questions the maturity and accuracy of existing AI implementation. Moreover, AI-guided surveillance and identification methods, including mobile phone data analysis, reflect privacy, legal, and proportionality concerns of AI deployment. Through discussion of refugee-centered …
Switzerland’S Approach To Combating Addiction To Opiates, And Its Application To The United States Framework, Vittoria Volpi
Switzerland’S Approach To Combating Addiction To Opiates, And Its Application To The United States Framework, Vittoria Volpi
Switzerland: Global Health and Development Policy
The opioid epidemic remains a pressing global public health challenge, with a hypothesized 1.2 million opioid-related fatalities in the United States alone, by 2029 (Rao et al., 2021). In the United States, the epidemic was driven by the overprescription of opioid pain medications in the 1990s. In contrast, in Switzerland, the opioid crisis stemmed from heroin imports and open-air drug scenes in the late 20th century. This research project analyzes Switzerland's national response to opioid abuse—specifically its Four Pillar Approach—and evaluates its potential applicability within the context of the United States. Using a qualitative research design, the study draws on …
Government-Backed Insurance For Artificial Intelligence Technologies, Renee Henson
Government-Backed Insurance For Artificial Intelligence Technologies, Renee Henson
Faculty Publications
Artificial intelligence (AI) is an unpredictable technology that has the capacity to both help and harm people. Although insurance plays a key role in compensating for harms in other contexts, AI-produced damages evade traditional principles of risk pricing which limits viable commercial insurance coverage. AI requires modified insurance systems that can compensate diverse and unpredictable losses. Just like AI, at one time nuclear energy was viewed as a new and profitable, yet wholly unpredictable, technology that had the capacity to cause devastating harm. AI poses similar threats to society in certain domains, including, for example, health care (e.g., risk management …

Policing Borders, Abandoning Rights: The Human Cost Of Eu Frontier Policy And Civil Society’S Response, Abena Afriyie
Policing Borders, Abandoning Rights: The Human Cost Of Eu Frontier Policy And Civil Society’S Response, Abena Afriyie
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This research examines the human rights consequences of recent shifts in the European Union and Spain’s immigration policies, which increasingly prioritize deterrence, externalization, and securitization over the protection of migrants’ rights. These policies, often framed as measures to combat irregular migration, have included the outsourcing of border control to third countries, such as Libya and Morocco, as well as the criminalization of humanitarian organizations engaged in search and rescue operations. By outsourcing border control to third countries, these policies exacerbate misinformation and anti-immigration sentiment while pushing asylum seekers into perilous transit routes fraught with abuse. Such strategies push migrants into …
Understanding Populism In Spain: Root Causes, Political Impacts, And Containment Strategies, Yuliu Huang
Understanding Populism In Spain: Root Causes, Political Impacts, And Containment Strategies, Yuliu Huang
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This paper investigates the rise of populism in Spain, examining its root causes, political consequences, and potential strategies for democratic resilience. Spain presents a unique case of simultaneous left-wing and right-wing populist surges, embodied by the Podemos and V ox parties, respectively. Through a mixed-methods approach that includes a literature review and semi-structured interviews, the paper identifies economic inequality, political corruption, and cultural anxieties as the primary drivers of populist sentiment. It analyzes how these movements have reshaped Spain’s political landscape, such as dismantling the PSOE and PP duopoly in parliament, altering public policy priorities, and exacerbating political polarization. The …
Traumatic Brain Injury Prevention Through Helmet Safety Education For Parents And Free Helmets For Elementary-Aged School Children, Kelli E. Camp
Traumatic Brain Injury Prevention Through Helmet Safety Education For Parents And Free Helmets For Elementary-Aged School Children, Kelli E. Camp
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Problem Description: Head injuries from bicycle accidents are a leading cause of emergency visits among elementary-aged children, particularly in rural areas (Safe Kids Worldwide, 2017). Helmets significantly reduce traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) up to 88% (Field Neurosciences Institute, n.d.). However, low-income families, especially in rural areas, often lack access to helmets and safety education, resulting in lower helmet use and higher injury rates. These challenges are amplified in communities facing high traffic injury rates, limited access to safety resources, and economic constraints (Gilna et al., 2022; World Health Organization, 2023).
Setting: This project took place in Othello, WA (pop. 8,915), …
How Seeing Rural America As A Commons Can (Re)Build Mutual Respect Across The Rural-Urban Divide, Lisa R. Pruitt
How Seeing Rural America As A Commons Can (Re)Build Mutual Respect Across The Rural-Urban Divide, Lisa R. Pruitt
West Virginia Law Review
This Essay, written for a symposium that honors and amplifies Ann Eisenberg’s 2024 book, Reviving Rural America: Toward Policies for Resilience, contemplates benefits that could flow from taking seriously Eisenberg’s conceptualization of rural America as a commons. In particular, I argue that the mutual respect and collaboration necessary for a successful commons could help heal the rural-urban rift, which has widened dramatically in the last few decades. Recent studies suggest that rural residents have what scholars call a rural consciousnesses, which means that living in a rural place is a key aspect of their identity. One feature of this identity …

Code Of Faith: Programming Spirituality In The Digital Age, Caleb Martin
Senior Honors Theses
With the increasing pervasiveness of technology in our daily lives, it is critical to consider the potential effects on an individual's religious practices and beliefs from software applications developed within a religious framework. This thesis delves into the relationship between software development and religious experiences, examining the manner in which the creation, operation, and application of religious technology can mold and impact an individual's spiritual development. This thesis aims to inform the implementation of technologies with a nonsecular application, ensuring that they are developed with a deep respect for the nuances of religious experience. The findings of this study will …

Fences, Fields, And Fourth Amendment Rights: Limiting The Powers Of Game Wardens, Ryder Schone
Fences, Fields, And Fourth Amendment Rights: Limiting The Powers Of Game Wardens, Ryder Schone
Brigham Young University Prelaw Review
Since the establishment of the Open Fields Doctrine in 1924, both private and public lands not immediately surrounding a home or commercial building have been open to search and seizure by U.S. game wardens. Owing to a century of access without judicial supervision, the powers of game wardens have expanded to a state of overreach which violates the Fourth Amendment rights and privacy of citizens. This paper proposes a federal statute that clearly delineates the circumstances under which game wardens can enter private property. Legal scholars generally agree on the need for reform; however, current discussions often fail to address …
What’S In A Name? Policing, Juliet., Shanée Brown
What’S In A Name? Policing, Juliet., Shanée Brown
SMU Law Review Forum
“Child welfare” and “child protection” are misnomers. These terms do not accurately depict the investigatory nature of the system purported to help families, or at the very least, save endangered children. Contrary to public opinion, the “child welfare system” comprises of state actors who police parents and children. It is the naming of this system that convinces the public that these agencies are excised from the category of law enforcement, persuading many that the agencies engage in social work and not police work. Calling the system what it really is—family policing—is a step toward achieving justice for families adversely impacted …
Data Privacy At The Border: How To Balance National Security Concerns And Privacy Interests When Conducting Forensic Border Searches Of Electronic Devices, Eleni Filley
Washington and Lee Journal of Civil Rights and Social Justice
Do you know where your phone is? Can you describe the last five pictures in your camera roll? How many websites have you visited this month? Cell phones are an extension of our person and contain some of our most private data: location, banking, loved ones, sleep statistics, reproductive information, and more. As our technology develops, so too should our laws. This Note explores the lack of privacy protections at the U.S. border and how susceptible our data is to a government search. A Supreme Court ruling recognizing the unique piece of property a cell phone represents, even at a …
Cannabis At Work: Navigating The Intersection Of Employment Law And Legalized Marijuana, Eva Lane
Cannabis At Work: Navigating The Intersection Of Employment Law And Legalized Marijuana, Eva Lane
Washington and Lee Journal of Civil Rights and Social Justice
As states increasingly legalize forms of cannabis use, federal regulation remains stagnant. These outdated laws still hold power, undermining state-granted rights. This impact is especially felt in the employment sector. While states pass laws legalizing cannabis use, employers still have a right to a drug free workplace. Many employment agreements prohibit drug use, even if legal under state law. This Note examines recent caselaw to analyze how courts are handling the battle between state and federal government as it relates to cannabis legalization. Ultimately, the argument highlights the risk employees face – engaging in what they believe is legal behavior …

Crisis Communication Role In Influencing Student Perceptions Of Safety On Campus, Madison Solomon, Jyanne Guide, Bryce Graham
Crisis Communication Role In Influencing Student Perceptions Of Safety On Campus, Madison Solomon, Jyanne Guide, Bryce Graham
2025 Honors College Research Symposium
Crisis communication plays a crucial role in shaping student perceptions of safety. Universities across the nation have leveraged new digital communications to alert students in times of emergency, but there are persistent concerns about the timeliness and clarity of these messages, and discrepancies in crime reports. Previous research suggests that delayed and cryptic messages stimulate anxiety, while clear and timely communications foster trust. Building on previous research, we propose a study that inspects the influence of campus safety communication, especially the frequency, channel, and clarity of messages, on students’ perception of safety on North Carolina A&T’s campus. By using archival …

Lobbying For Our Lives: A Comprehensive Analysis Of The Impact Of Restrictive Non-Profit Lobbying Rules On The Progression Of Climate Change Legislation, Natalia Akopian
Lobbying For Our Lives: A Comprehensive Analysis Of The Impact Of Restrictive Non-Profit Lobbying Rules On The Progression Of Climate Change Legislation, Natalia Akopian
University of the District of Columbia Law Review
Lobbying is a powerful tool that allows interest groups to influence lawmakers and shape policy decisions. However, the ability to effectively lobby is not evenly distributed among stakeholders. Generally, private businesses face minimal restrictions on lobbying while tax-exempt organizations, particularly non-profits advocating for environmental policies, operate under strict federal limitations on lobbying activities and expenditures. This structural disparity has created an uneven playing field where corporate interests, such as the fossil fuel industry, wield disproportionate influence over climate policy. As a result, climate-friendly legislation often struggles to gain traction despite the public’s growing concern over environmental issues.
This note examines …
Goldilocks And The Three Frameworks: An Argument For A Hybrid Approach To Regulating Fusion Energy Systems, Mitch Boyer
Goldilocks And The Three Frameworks: An Argument For A Hybrid Approach To Regulating Fusion Energy Systems, Mitch Boyer
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
Part I will explore the beginnings of nuclear power regulation in the United States by outlining the short lifespan of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), the NRC’s [Nuclear Regulatory Commission's] predecessor, and why the Agency’s two competing directives of protecting public safety and encouraging industry development eventually led to its dissolution in 1974. The subsequent separation and assignment of these directives to newly created agencies— safety to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and development to the Energy Research and Development Administration—demonstrates that the NRC’s primary statutory directive is regulating nuclear power safely. Part II will delve into the early days of …

Arts & Literature: Orizaba, The Magical Town: A Scholar’S Experience With A Mothers’ Search Collective In Mexico, Pedro J. Gonzalez Corona
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
The crisis of forced disappearances in Mexico reaches thousands of regular citizens in every aspect of their lives. Beyond studying the mechanics of the phenomenon: the formation of search collectives, and state-citizenship interactions, the experience of being a witness of a mass graves search provides crucial details on the micro-dynamics of collaboration essential to understanding the attempt and/or the beginning of a personal and societal healing process.

Dangerous Legitimacy: The Risks Of Normalizing Hamas As A Fundamentalist Terror Group In Western Discourse, Shevach Berkovits, Darnell Downes, Hunter Lacroix, Michael Dobkowski
Journal of Strategic Security
This article examines the dangers of Western discourse misrepresenting and normalizing Hamas, a fundamentalist terrorist group, as a legitimate actor in regional crises and conflicts. It explores Hamas' origins as a global terrorist organization, its history of armed conflict with neighbors and the broader Western world, and its ideological roots in religious fundamentalism and totalitarianism. The article argues that Hamas’ principles and actions are fundamentally incompatible with Western democratic ideals, posing a significant threat to regional and global security. It also addresses the ongoing challenges of "Western washing" Hamas through propaganda spread via social activism and social media. The article …
