Introduction
When Fred Korematsu stood in the San Francisco federal district court in 1942 to challenge the constitutionality of a criminal charge that he had violated an exclusion order issued pursuant to Executive Order 9066, he was represented by pro bono counsel funded by the San Francisco office of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). But just four days after Fred’s attorneys filed a motion to dismiss his criminal charges, ACLU director Roger Baldwin—wanting to avoid angering President Roosevelt—conveyed the “national board’s decision to prohibit test cases from challenging Roosevelt’s authority to issue Executive Order 9066.” Instead, local ACLU affiliates …

An Investigative Analysis Into The Correlation Between Police Department Budgets And Violent Crime Rates., Julie Schwartz
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Criminal justice reform and calls to defund the police have become more prevalent since the unrest that occurred in 2020. Research to date has looked at criminal justice reform, crime causation, and discussions surrounding defunding the police. Previous research has looked at police funding conceptually but not from a quantitative lens. The purpose of this quantitative nonexperimental study was to provide an investigative analysis into police department funding and the effect of the funding on violent crime rates using strain theory as its foundation. The research question addressed the relationship between police department budgets, specifically the criminal investigations unit, and …

Artificial Intelligence: An Impetus To Amend The Aba Model Code Of Judicial Conduct, Davis G. Yee
Artificial Intelligence: An Impetus To Amend The Aba Model Code Of Judicial Conduct, Davis G. Yee
St. Mary's Journal on Legal Malpractice & Ethics
Notwithstanding the increasing prevalence of artificial intelligence or AI in the legal field, Chief Justice Roberts recently predicted that “human judges will be around for a while.” The reason is that at this time, AI cannot perform judicial mental functions as well as human judges can in deciding cases. Yet, instead of having AI replace human judges, some have explored whether AI can be used to assist human judges with their adjudicative and administrative responsibilities.
This Article focuses on a judge’s ethical obligations when encountering AI on both sides of the bench. That is, what do judicial ethics call for …
Electric Field Profiles Under High Voltage Overhead Transmission Lines With Under-Build Distribution Circuit, Aminu Haruna
Electric Field Profiles Under High Voltage Overhead Transmission Lines With Under-Build Distribution Circuit, Aminu Haruna
Electrical Engineering Theses
The increasing use of underbuilt lines in recent transmission projects alters electric field profile under transmission lines. By assessing electric field intensity in these transmission and distribution network configurations, the study identifies regions with high electric fields that may exceed standard exposure limits, posing potential risks. This work employs the charge simulation method and the method of imaging to analyze electric fields beneath transmission lines with underbuilt distribution networks. Key objectives include calculating the electric fields at 1 meter above ground, and evaluating the field at conductor surfaces. The study considers transmission line voltages of 69kV, 161kV, 220kV, 345kV and …

Performance Of Tetra And Gsm\Gprs As A Platform For Broadband Internet And Multimedia Evolution, M. I. Dababneh, E. S. Al-Khawaldeh
The Journal of Engineering Research
In this paper, a novel approach for the comparison between TETRA system and other contenders is presented showing the relative potentials, thence applications and possible new services. TETRA Voice plus Data (V+D) and GPRSbased- GSM performance are also compared for defined multimedia transmission to revise the capability of bothsystems to afford multimedia applications to large number of subscribers with the shortest time possible while maintaining the optimal channel utilization. Performance measurements for data transmission illustrate that TETRA exhibits faster time response for connection setup time than the GPRS\GSM applications can provide. Simulation results also confirm that TETRA can support larger …

The Impact Of Human Trafficking, Jenna Diprima, Eboni Patterson, Gabriela Meza
INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference
Human trafficking is a crime that has been documented since the 1500s and continues to be a significant issue, reaching unprecedented levels today. Human trafficking is an act in which an individual coerces/compels another and forces them to provide services for financial gain. Victims often come from connections with people they trust. In 2023, it was monitored that 348 people in the US were victims of human trafficking, 316 of 348 victims were children. Worldwide, however, this number is much higher standing at 49.6 million with Guatemala taking up a significant chunk as it has been estimated that 24.9 million …
The Repair Rule: Maine Rule Of Evidence 407(A) And The Admissibility Of Subsequent Remedial Measures In Proving Negligence, Maine Law Review
The Repair Rule: Maine Rule Of Evidence 407(A) And The Admissibility Of Subsequent Remedial Measures In Proving Negligence, Maine Law Review
Maine Law Review
Evidence of subsequent repairs is generally excluded when submitted for admission as circumstantial evidence of negligence. Although this Comment will examine various theories under which such evidence has been held inadmissible, these theories are all based on one of two assumptions. Evidence of subsequent repairs has been excluded either because it is regarded as irrelevant to the issue of negligence, or although relevant, as incompetent because its admission is believed to counteract the strong public policy to encourage repairs. Most modern rules of evidence now base the exclusion on the public policy rationale. Thus, the effect of the subsequent repair …

Perceptions Of Campus Safety And Campus Carry Among Student Veterans, Kerwin J. Flaherty
Perceptions Of Campus Safety And Campus Carry Among Student Veterans, Kerwin J. Flaherty
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Student veterans are an essential population for research but remain consistently underexamined in the literature. Similarly, veterans carrying firearms are an essential but under-examined topic in the literature. This study sought to address gaps in both domains by investigating student veterans’ perspectives on safety and firearms on campus, or “campus carry”. Campus carry refers to a set of policies that vary by jurisdiction but generally allow individuals to legally carry concealed firearms on all or some parts of a public university or college campus. This qualitative phenomenological study explored how student veterans in Texas perceive campus safety and how these …

Violent Infrastructure: Natural And Unnatural Barriers To Climate Migration, Walden Hicks
Global Tides
This paper attempts to compare and contrast the impact of immigration policy on climate migrants in three Global North countries, Italy, the United States, and New Zealand. Climate migration will continue to be one of the most significant international concerns as global temperatures increase and previously habitable areas of the globe become uninhabitable. Climate migrants are forced to migrate for a variety of reasons due to climate change, including sea level rise, famine, rising temperatures, drought, and natural disaster. Global North countries must begin to transform their immigration systems towards climate justice and acceptance for climate migrants or communities will …
Residency Requirements In Initiative Ballot Access: The Limits Of First Amendment Rights And The Fight Against Atlanta's 'Cop City', Ross Levin
Fordham Law Voting Rights and Democracy Forum
When election procedure is challenged, courts must balance First Amendment rights against states’ prerogative to regulate elections. Residency requirements are an election procedure that require petition circulators be a resident of the jurisdiction. Residency restrictions on petition circulators—who collect signatures to achieve ballot access—weigh too heavily against First Amendment rights. In jurisdictions where residency requirements remain in place for initiative ballot access, voters are unconstitutionally shut out of the political process.
In this Article, I examine two cases in which the Supreme Court extended its First Amendment ballot access jurisprudence to ballot initiatives, Meyer v. Grant and Buckley v. American …

Standardizing Space Technologies As Admissible Evidence: Legal And Ethical Frameworks For U.S. Courts And The International Criminal Court, Tuana Yazici
University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review
This paper explores the increasing role of satellite and other space technologies — such as optical satellite imagery, radar, and artificial intelligence (AI) — in legal proceedings both in the U.S. and internationally. It examines relevant Supreme Court and appellate cases, as well as key international rulings, to assess how courts are addressing the legal challenges posed by surveillance technologies. These cases reveal the tension between advancing technology and existing privacy protections, highlighting the need for updated legal frameworks. The analysis also covers federal laws, including the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, alongside proposed legislation like the American Privacy Rights Act …
Silent Shores: The Asean Human Rights Response To Refugee Protections, Lakshmi Sanmuganathan
Silent Shores: The Asean Human Rights Response To Refugee Protections, Lakshmi Sanmuganathan
University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review
Established on August 8, 1967, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (“ASEAN”) emerged as the first intergovernmental organization dedicated to promoting peace, security, and regional unity in Southeast Asia. In 2009, ASEAN affirmed its commitment to human rights by founding the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (“AICHR”), the first regional human rights system in Asia. This note offers a critical evaluation of the ASEAN human rights system and its response to refugee rights, recognition, and protections in Southeast Asia. It begins by assessing the historical foundation that has shaped ASEAN’s contemporary constraints. Building on this historical analysis, the focus …
