Evaluating Impact Of Educational Research On Teachers’ Practice: A Teacher Expectations Intervention, Olivia Johnston
Evaluating Impact Of Educational Research On Teachers’ Practice: A Teacher Expectations Intervention, Olivia Johnston
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Educational research that generates new knowledge can have a positive impact on teaching practice, yet few methods have been developed to show if, and how, knowledge-based research translation has any impact on teachers’ professional practices. The research reported in this paper evaluated the impact of a Teacher Expectations Intervention on teachers’ practice. The intervention disseminated new knowledge about teaching practices that communicate high expectations to students. Graham et al.’s (2006) Knowledge-to-Action Framework provided a conceptual framework to develop, implement and evaluate the intervention with the participant teachers. The findings show that 61 secondary-school teachers experienced overall positive impact on their …

Explosions Are Always Entertaining But…: Investigating The Impacts Of Science Shows On High School Students, Shanii Phillips, Miriam Sullivan, Ann Grand
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Science shows are often posited as a route to encourage young people to engage with science. Using a mixed methods approach, our research investigated the impact of attending a science show on high school students’ intentions to study science or pursue a career in science. We found that while a single visit to a science show has little impact on students’ aspirations, it can reinforce students’ confidence in their ability to succeed in science. In terms of design and performance, the best-received shows included ‘real-world’ content that students could identify as relevant to their lives.

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Management of cultural landscapes has struggled to understand and adapt to Indigenous ways of managing heritage through a reciprocal duty of care. We argue that barriers to Indigenous cultural landscapes are threefold. First, conceptual barriers exist due to the prevalence of inappropriate heritage concepts and frameworks from the Global North. Second are relational barriers in the form of asymmetrical relationships of power between non-Indigenous heritage ‘experts’ and Indigenous individuals and communities. Third, political barriers present in neo-colonial politics are at odds with the goals of Indigenous movements. After introducing Martuwarra RiverOfLife and her co-authors, we review these barriers within a …

On-Device Recommender Systems: A Comprehensive Survey, Hongzhi Yin, Liang Qu, Tong Chen, Wei Yuan, Ruiqi Zheng, Jing Long, Xin Xia, Yuhui Shi, Chengqi Zhang
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Recommender systems have been widely deployed in various real-world applications to help users identify content of interest from massive amounts of information. Traditional recommender systems work by collecting user-item interaction data in a cloud-based data center and training a centralized model to perform the recommendation service. However, such cloud-based recommender systems (CloudRSs) inevitably suffer from excessive resource consumption, response latency, as well as privacy and security risks concerning both data and models. Recently, driven by the advances in storage, communication, and computation capabilities of edge devices, there has been a shift of focus from CloudRSs to on-device recommender systems (DeviceRSs), …

The Strengthening Mechanisms And Incipient Plasticity Of Additively Manufactured Biomedical Refractory High Entropy Alloys, Changxi Liu, Liqiang Wang, Miao Luo, Kuaishe Wang, Marco De Battista, Ling Zhang, Weijie Lu, Lai Chang Zhang, Di Zhang
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Owing to the cellular structure that limits dislocation motion upon stress loading, additively manufactured (AM) refractory high-entropy alloys (HEAs) exhibit an excellent strength-plasticity synergy. This work integrates micro/nano-mechanical experiments with statistical physics modeling to examine dislocation nucleation and slip in AM-fabricated TiNbTaZrMo HEA. Computational results indicated that the activation volume for initial dislocation nucleation is about one atomic volume, facilitating dislocation initiation. Nanoindentation and in-situ micro-pillar compression reveal no significant pop-in events, indicating that the cellular structure impedes dislocation slip and thus prevents plasticity reduction from dislocation slipping near grain boundaries. This work provides a thorough investigation into the interplay …

3d Engineered Scaffolds Of Conjugated Polymers/Metal Organic Frameworks For Biomedical Applications, Amin Hosseini Sharifabad, Roham Ghanbari, Mohammad Reza Saeb, Ehsan Nazarzadeh Zare, Filippo Rossi, Mehdi Salami-Kalajahi, Pooyan Makvandi
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The extracellular matrix can be replicated by 3D scaffolds, providing a favorable environment for cell growth, proliferation, and differentiation. Despite their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and bioactivity, the poor mechanical strength of 3D scaffolds limits their use for heavy loads. This creates a bottleneck in the supply of scaffolds with enhanced mechanical strength and all the previously mentioned characteristics. Conjugated polymers have emerged as a promising option for 3D scaffold construction due to their electrical conductivity, adjustable surface qualities, and ability to transfer bioactive molecules. Moreover, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a rapidly emerging class of nanomaterials due to their uniform porosity, excellent …

Interpersonal Consequences Of Employee Innovation Behavior, Shenghui Wang, Irene E. De Pater, Ming Yi, Edward Wray-Bliss
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Existing research highlights how leadership fosters employee innovation. Less is known, however, about how supervisors react to innovative subordinates. Drawing on social comparison theory and interpersonal interaction theory, we examine the role of employee innovative behavior in eliciting supervisor envy and shaping subsequent behavioral responses. Specifically, we propose that highly innovative employees elicit envy from their supervisors and, in turn, experience more abusive supervision when both they and their supervisors are highly extraverted. In contrast, when highly innovative employees are extraverted, but their envious supervisors are not, we propose that they are more likely to experience supportive supervision. We tested …

For embodied agents, such as robots, tracking objects in their surroundings through visual observation is essential — a task, referred to as Visual Object Tracking (VOT). For instance, during a rearrangement task, a robot may need to track objects, as part of the scene change understanding process, to accurately restore them to their original states. Classic Multiple Object Tracking (MOT) datasets typically focus on tracking moving, single-class object instances in a video from a fixed viewpoint, limiting their applicability to embodied AI tasks. In embodied AI tasks, objects belong to multiple classes, are often static, and are observed from continuously …

This dataset was created for the evaluation of the EmbSCU method, suitable for solving the Scene Change Understanding (SCU) task. The SCU task involves predicting a changed location, describing a change, and generating language instructions for the robotic agent to revert a change. Current datasets, related to scene change understanding, can be divided into scene change detection (SCD) and image difference captioning (IDC) datasets. Unlike existing approaches, EmbSCU facilitates simultaneous change detection, description and language-based rearrangement instruction generation for the agent to revert changes. Although the EmbSCU dataset is simulated, it is highly complex, incorporating 104 unique indoor Ai2Thor rooms. …
