Wholehearted Leadership: Equipping Clergy For Healthy Leadership, Nicole Mcclurg
Wholehearted Leadership: Equipping Clergy For Healthy Leadership, Nicole Mcclurg
Doctor of Ministry
NPO Statement: Considering current training for Evangelical clergy, sustained attention to spiritual formation is often missing but essential for pastoral health and healthy, sustainable ministry.
Clergy are burning out significantly, as reported by a Lifeway Research Poll that found 100% of 1,500 pastors know colleagues that left the ministry, while 91% of pastors report experiencing burnout.1 The research suggests that seminary does not prepare clergy for the demands of ministry or the practical spiritual needs of their congregations. Clergy struggle to maintain a solid vocational identity rooted in the Trinity amid pastoral duties. Many clergy are isolated from ongoing …

Prepared To Pastor: A Self-Assessment Tool And Equipping Guide For Pastoral Leaders, Scott Dickie
Doctor of Leadership
Many Christian leaders in the Canadian Alliance are not prepared for ministry leadership, resulting in ineffective or unhealthy leadership, poor personal choices, lack of resiliency and high attrition rates.
As a pastor with three decades of experience, I still feel ill-equipped in areas my role requires of me. My research revealed that many pastors often feel ‘in over their head’ as they navigate deep theological questions, complex psychological issues, challenging financial decisions, public critique or praise, and intricate human resource legalities. Pastors who enter church leadership from traditional bible schools or seminaries are often well-equipped in theological knowledge but tend …
Engaging Biblical Criticism In The American South: A Local Church Approach, Adam Harris
Engaging Biblical Criticism In The American South: A Local Church Approach, Adam Harris
Doctor of Leadership
Historical critical approaches to the Bible that reexamine doctrines of inerrancy are unheard of, dismissed, or viewed as a threat throughout Christian faith communities in Sumner County, TN. This underutilizes a credible method of interpretation for Christians who have only been exposed to views that tightly hold biblical inerrancy. The lack of awareness and disregard for aspects of biblical criticism in local churches by leaders and congregation members in Sumner County, TN, is multifaceted.
Most stakeholders in this NPO context have backgrounds in conservative American Evangelical Protestant congregations. They are either struggling with or reexamining their inherited beliefs due to …
More Than Fine A Flourishing Foursquare Lead Pastor, John Fehlen
More Than Fine A Flourishing Foursquare Lead Pastor, John Fehlen
Doctor of Leadership
Foursquare Lead Pastors increasingly face challenges of personal and professional languishing, characterized by diminishing joy, weakened connections, insufficient self-care, and an underdeveloped theology of suffering. These issues contribute to declining pastoral well-being and effectiveness. This doctoral project addresses these challenges holistically— encompassing body, soul, and spirit—while offering hope-filled encouragement and practical solutions for sustainable ministry.
Having served as a Foursquare Lead Pastor for over 30 years, I bring firsthand experience to this pressing issue. My research confirms that pastoral languishing is a widespread concern, demanding intentional, theologically grounded responses. This project provides such a response by integrating biblical insights, historical …

Whole Broken People Wholeness Of Life At All Ages, Brenda K. Lewis
Doctor of Ministry
NPO Statement
Experiences of lost independence or control overwhelm or block the spiritual coping mechanisms of some Independent Living residents at Givens Estates.
Key Research Insights
Deep cultural bias, denial, and a lack of realistic role models form blocks between us and healthy coping with the realities of aging. When we lose independence and control, we often lose our expected storyline, our sense of our identity, and our understanding of the role of our spiritual traditions. The Christian tradition offers rich resources for redefining our story and ourselves in ways that deepen our faith and our connection with the people …
Are Library Teaching And Research Services Broken? Understand The Academic Journey For Better Service Design, Tess Hobbis, Sascha Jenkins
Are Library Teaching And Research Services Broken? Understand The Academic Journey For Better Service Design, Tess Hobbis, Sascha Jenkins
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Do we really understand what academics need from libraries today? Can understanding and empathising with the academic experience challenge library assumptions about teaching and research services? UTS Library investigated these questions through a year-long project. Using a design-thinking project methodology, empathy mapping and human-centred practices, the project team was able to delve into the world of the UTS academic: gaining a comprehensive understanding of the academic’s goals, behaviours, motivations and pain points around conducting teaching and research activities. The resulting insights present new opportunities for service design and delivery in an academic library context. UTS Library staff now have a …

The Lived Experiences Of African American Children Of Clergy: What Has Become Of Them In Their Adulthood?, Chantel Danielle Staton
The Lived Experiences Of African American Children Of Clergy: What Has Become Of Them In Their Adulthood?, Chantel Danielle Staton
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
It is noticeable that there are stereotypes associated with being African American due to prejudice and racism. It is identifiable, as well, that there are stereotypes associated with being a child of the clergy due to their expectations being higher than nonclergy children. How do the two coexist? This phenomenological study aims to understand how the lived experiences of African American children of clergy have impacted their adulthood. How has being an African American child growing up in the home of a pastor impacted how that child now copes mentally, emotionally, and spiritually as an adult? This study is designed …

The Women’s Leadership and Resource Center states, “Gender-based violence against Black women has always existed in the US. From historical accounts of chattel slavery to analyses of present-day society, Black women have endured multiple forms of violence including labor …, sexual …, medical … and … exploitation.”32 This dissertation will provide important research about gender-based violence against Black women and girls and will conclude with Christ-centered approaches for transformative holistic wellbeing. Do laws that prevent violence enable more violence? In the fact sheet published by the National Black Women’s Justice Institute, it is noted that, “Experiences of abuse do …
Parallel Journeys: Supporting Wounded Healers In Counselor Education, Susannah C. Coaston
Parallel Journeys: Supporting Wounded Healers In Counselor Education, Susannah C. Coaston
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
Much has been written about the motivations for wounded healers to pursue work in the helping professions. Those with painful life experiences can have a unique ability to understand the pain of others, and through their recovery, they may gain insight and understanding to benefit others. The counselor development process can be fraught with challenges that may have a detrimental impact on wounded healers. As such, counselor educators can benefit from amending their approaches to ensure that wounded healers gain the skills necessary to support their mental health and well-being, effectiveness, and personal and professional development. This article introduces a …

Emotional Turbulence Of Children Of The Clergy, The Lived Experiences And Emotional Development Of Adult Children Of The Clergy: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study, Tabitha L. Bennett
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The current study is a Phenomenological qualitative approach to understanding the lived experience of adult Children of the Clergy and exploring the various pressures and expectations faced by Children of the Clergy versus other church members. Everyone experiences external and internal pressures, but this will delve into whether it is an added layer simply from being a child of the clergy. The current study will investigate multiple families to understand family dynamics and the effects of growing up as Children of the Clergy into adulthood. Through phenomenological testing, utilizing the Bowen Family Theory and a sub-theory of the Labeling theory, …
