Vcu Scicom: A Federated Unit For Community-Engaged Science Communication, Dara Azuma Lampugnale, Bernard Fuemmeler, Brody Jameson, Megan Lo, Amanda Gentry

The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute Publications

Confidence and trust in science have declined in recent years, in part due a lack of understanding of how science works and that knowledge is not immutable but constantly evolving. At the same time the rise in social media has led to the spread of misinformation and changes in the media landscape have made it difficult to disseminate the correct information to channels that reach the greatest numbers. While most Americans see scientists as intelligent, less than half (45%) say that they are good communicators. As a public university, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) serves the public good by ensuring that …

A History Of Individuation: Aristotle, Jung, Simondon And The Vital Impulse, Sam Gould Jan 2025

A History Of Individuation: Aristotle, Jung, Simondon And The Vital Impulse, Sam Gould

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

This paper theoretically situates transformation as a biophysiological process specific to information transfer in and throughout a multicellular organism, conceptualized as the epigenesis, morphogenesis, and formation of the self in the unfolding process of individuation. The self will be ascribed, not merely as the Jungian definition of something to be realized through individuation, but rather, as a twofold operation: (a) As a conjunction within the process of individuation that extends into, as part of, the possible future process of individuation; to account for this phase in the operation of the unfolding of the self, the paper refers to Gilbert Simondon’s …

Reduced Risk Of Necrotizing Enterocolitis With Breastfeeding, Jadyn Tavekelian

The PA Department Journal of Medical Science

Abstract

Introduction: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a life-threatening disease in infants that causes direct damage to the intestines and requires emergent treatment. The purpose of this clinical review is to analyze the prevention of NEC in preterm neonates with breastfeeding.

Methods: PubMed was searched using a specific search strategy using the key terms “breast,” “feed,” “formula,” “necrotizing,” and “enterocolitis.” Operators and filters applied narrowed the results to 4 quality articles for review.

Results: One RCT, and two meta-analyses, reviewed had a reduction in the development of necrotizing enterocolitis among breastfed neonates. One randomized noninferiority trial totaling 123 neonates did not …

Assessment Of Amikacin In Treatment Of Calf Diarrhea :Field Study, Enas M. Mohamed, Eman S. El-Ashry, Reham A. El-Shafei, Mohamed G. El-Sayed

Mansoura Veterinary Medical Journal

Background Neonatal calf diarrhea (NCD) is one of the most prevalent diseases affecting young calves, leading to substantial economic loss and elevated mortality rates. This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of amikacin in treating calf diarrhea by analyzing hematological profiles, as well as kidney and liver function indicators. Methods Twenty Holstein calves were randomly allocated to two equal groups (n=10 each). Group 1 served as the untreated control group, while Group 2 consisted of calves exhibiting clinical symptoms of diarrhea, which were administered amikacin intramuscularly at a dose of 10 mg/kg body weight for three successive days. Results …

Covid-19 In The History Of Capitalism, Victor Wallis Jan 2025

Covid-19 In The History Of Capitalism, Victor Wallis

Faculty Works

The obvious role of capital in generating poverty, war, and environmental breakdown has not led to a parallel recognition of how deeply it shapes the ideology and practice of healthcare. Progressives view access to healthcare as a matter of “right,” but with rare exceptions they do not focus attention on the wider determinants of health policy – from the life-conditions that shape public health to the prevalence, in capitalist countries, of market-inspired remedies. Looking at the US experience and noting how capitalist priorities have permeated official policies toward Covid-19, this essay discusses how medical objections to these policies have been …

Climate And Gypsum Parent Material Shape Biocrust Communities And Moss Ecology In The Chihuahuan And Mojave Deserts, Katelyn Gobbie, Nicole Pietrasiak, Brian M. Jusko, Rebecca E. Drenovsky

2025 Faculty Bibliography

Biological soil crust communities (biocrusts) establishing on gypsum soils have been well-documented for their prolific appearance and rich diversity of lichens and bryophytes. However, studies characterizing gypsum biocrusts have occurred primarily outside of the U.S., most of which lack comparisons to other soil types. We conducted intensive field surveys to evaluate the ground cover and frequency of biocrust functional groups and moss species on gypsum and non-gypsum soils in the U.S. regions with the most extensive gypsum outcrops, the northern Chihuahuan and eastern Mojave Deserts. Study sites were stratified by geomorphology and paired, so that every gypsum site was matched …

From Weight To Risk: Understanding Obesity’S Role In Diabetes Mortality, Orina V. Thomas Jan 2025

From Weight To Risk: Understanding Obesity’S Role In Diabetes Mortality, Orina V. Thomas

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2025

The goal of the study was to look into the potential relationship between obesity and diabetes-related mortality in the state of Florida. Diabetes is a significant chronic illness that has a wide range of effects throughout the state and is linked to major complications and early mortality. Understanding this association is crucial for guiding public health initiatives because obesity is one of the most significant and avoidable risk factors for type 2 diabetes.

To examine this association, I conducted an ecological correlation study using 2022 data from all 67 Florida counties. The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) was used …

Equity Implications Of The Unchanged Federal Minimum Wage Since 2009, Yali Pang Phd, Nakeina E. Douglas-Glenn Phd, Cameron Williams, Research Institute For Social Equity Rise

Research Institute for Social Equity

This year marks 16 years since the federal minimum wage was raised in 2009. It is the longest period in its history without any increase. Even though over 20 states increased their minimum wage rates in 2025, there are still 20 states adhering to the federal minimum wage of $7.25. While the minimum wage at the federal level and in many states has remained stagnant, the prices of all life essentials have continued to increase across the country, with $1 in July 2009 having the same buying power of $1.46 in July 2024. Today, an individual needs an hourly wage …

Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Phytoplanktonic Groups In Sarasota Bay And Lido Beach, C'Erra Tubbs Jan 2025

Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Phytoplanktonic Groups In Sarasota Bay And Lido Beach, C'Erra Tubbs

Theses & ETDs

Phytoplankton are known to be very responsive to environmental variables and changes such as temperature and salinity. There are many intersections between all these understudied variables. Here, I show the intersectionalities of different phytoplankton groups and their abundances among various environmental conditions and ecological patterns. Phytoplankton were collected and analyzed in January and July 2023 from two separate locations: Sarasota Bay and Lido Beach. Collections were also done from two separate depths. Dinoflagellates and diatoms responded differently to seasonal changes. Dinoflagellates were more sensitive to temperature changes, with clear differences between seasons, while diatoms were more adaptable to changes with …

Theses & ETDs

The advent of electronics has been one of the greatest breakthroughs in human history, allowing us to significantly improve our quality of life, long-distance communication, and overall development as a society. Optimization and innovation of such technologies is ever-present today, as we continue to transition from in-person to online services. Despite the ongoing advances, the materials that we use to fabricate these devices are typically of plastic and metallic-origin, which not only persist in the environment, but are also detrimental to its health and that of humans. In fact, due to our increasing dependence on electronics, the industry is rapidly …

Achieving Optimal Wellness: Exploring The Benefits And Impact Of Community Health, Erin Riley

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Community health is an essential practice that utilizes non-clinical approaches to reduce health disparities, improve health, and prevent disease through engagement with a population of a certain geographical area. Building on earlier research, this study focused on the members of Alamance County and the increasing numbers of diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia cases from year to year. While community resources and health programs have improved over time, they are lacking in certain geographical areas. The aim of this project was to increase the knowledge and conversations around the most common diseases in Alamance County, through health seminars conducted at a …
