Title-Rare Case Of Retroperitoneal Colon Perforation In Advanced Squamous Cell Carcinoma Of Kidney, Kumar Vinchurkar, Shekhargouda Deshetti, Imtiaz Ahmed

Indian Journal of Health Sciences and Biomedical Research KLEU

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the renal pelvis is an uncommon tumor typically linked to chronic renal stone disease. This tumor is inherently aggressive and generally associated with a poor prognosis. We present a case involving a patient with retroperitoneal descending colon perforation in advanced squamous cell carcinoma of kidney probably secondary to radiation. Radiation-induced gastrointestinal perforation necessitates emergency surgery, and there is a lack of high-quality evidence to support the effectiveness of any preventive measures. In this review, we provide an overview of the clinical manifestations, risk factors, mechanisms, and treatments associated with radiation-induced gastrointestinal perforation. A thorough treatment …

Comparing 17Β-Estradiol And Progesterone Concentrations In Young, Physically Active Females: Insights From Plasma Versus Serum Analysis, Samantha N. Rowland, Mariasole Da Boit, Rachel Tan, Liam M. Heaney, Stephen J. Bailey

All Faculty Open Access Publications

Serum measurements of 17β-estradiol and progesterone are widely used to verify menstrual cycle status and confirm contraceptive use, often through commercially available immunoassay kits. However, no studies have investigated whether blood collection tube chemistries influence hormone concentrations in young females, despite assays permitting the use of different biofluids with similar reference ranges. In this study, venous blood was sampled from physically active females (n = 25) using Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and serum vacutainers, and 17β-estradiol and progesterone concentrations were measured using competitive immunoenzymatic assays. Median plasma concentrations of 17β-estradiol and progesterone were 44.2% (plasma 40.75 vs. serum 28.25 pg/ml) and …

Tradeoffs In The Energetic Value Of Neuromodulation In A Closed-Loop Neuromechanical System, Zhuojun Yu, Peter J. Thomas, Hillel J. Chiel Jan 2025

Tradeoffs In The Energetic Value Of Neuromodulation In A Closed-Loop Neuromechanical System, Zhuojun Yu, Peter J. Thomas, Hillel J. Chiel

Faculty Scholarship

Rhythmic motor behaviors controlled by neuromechanical systems, consisting of central neural circuitry, biomechanics, and sensory feedback, show efficiency in energy expenditure. The biomechanical elements (e.g., muscles) are modulated by peripheral neuromodulation which may improve their strength and speed properties. However, there are relatively few studies on neuromodulatory control of muscle function and metabolic mechanical efficiency in neuromechanical systems. To investigate the role of neuromodulation on the system's mechanical efficiency, we consider a neuromuscular model of motor patterns for feeding in the marine mollusk Aplysia californica. By incorporating muscle energetics and neuromodulatory effects into the model, we demonstrate tradeoffs in the …

Examining The Effects Of A Social Cognitive Intervention Aimed At Promoting Appropriate Antibiotic Use Self-Efficacy, Erin M. Hill, Andriana Frost

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Our goal in this study was to examine the effect of a social cognitive intervention aimed at improving appropriate antibiotic use self-efficacy (AAUSE). The intervention incorporated several aspects of self-efficacy theory, including mastery, vicarious learning, and verbal persuasion. To test the effectiveness of the intervention, we used two comparison conditions—reading a pamphlet focused on antibiotic resistance (ABR) or one focused on general health (diet, physical activity, sleep). A total of 226 undergraduate students completed the study, which involved completing a series of questions/questionnaires at time 1 (preintervention), engaging in the intervention (or reading a pamphlet), and then completing the time …

Pulsating Drought And Insect Herbivory Cause Differential Effects On Soybean (Glycine Max) Genotypes That Vary In Canopy Wilting Speed, Jessica Ayala, Manish Gautam, Adrianna Peissel, George Justin, Rupesh Kariyat

Entomology and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications and Presentations

As a result of climate change, global temperatures are increasing, and water scarcity is on the rise. Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr] is one of the most important crops in the world due to its importance as food and feed. One of the major limiting factors for soybean production is drought, which can cause up to 80% reduction in yield. Therefore, growers and plant breeders are turning to soybean accessions that demonstrate better water use efficiency (WUE). However, in addition to drought, insect herbivory by soybean looper (Chrysodeixis includens, SBL) and fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda, FAW) can also reduce soybean …

Microbiome Metabolic Capacity Is Buffered Against Phylotype Losses By Functional Redundancy, Kayla Cross, Noelle Beckman, Benjamin Jahnes, Zakee L. Sabree Jan 2025

Microbiome Metabolic Capacity Is Buffered Against Phylotype Losses By Functional Redundancy, Kayla Cross, Noelle Beckman, Benjamin Jahnes, Zakee L. Sabree

Biology Faculty Publications

Many animals contain a species-rich and diverse gut microbiota that likely contributes to several host-supportive services that include diet processing and nutrient provisioning. Loss of microbiome taxa and their associated metabolic functions as result of perturbations may result in loss of microbiome-level services and reduction of metabolic capacity. If metabolic functions are shared by multiple taxa (i.e., functional redundancy), including deeply divergent lineages, then the impact of taxon/function losses may be dampened. We examined to what degree alterations in phylotype diversity impact microbiome-level metabolic capacity. Feeding two nutritionally imbalanced diets to omnivorous Periplaneta americana over 8 weeks reduced the diversity …
