The Mitochondria As An Emerging Target Of Self- Renewal In T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Majd Al-Hamaly, Evelyn Winter, Jessica S. Blackburn Feb 2025

The Mitochondria As An Emerging Target Of Self- Renewal In T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Majd Al-Hamaly, Evelyn Winter, Jessica S. Blackburn

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is the most common leukemia in children, with the T-cell subtype (T- ALL) accounting for 15% of those cases. Despite advancements in the treatment of T-ALL, patients still face a dismal prognosis following their first relapse. Relapse can be attributed to the inability of chemotherapy agents to eradicate leukemia stem cells (LSC), which possess self-renewal capabilities and are responsible for the long-term maintenance of the disease. Mitochondria have been recognized as a therapeutic vulnerability for cancer stem cells, including LSCs. Mitocans have shown promise in T-ALL both in vitro and in vivo, with some currently in …

Risk Factors For Depression Symptoms In Adolescents: A Population-Based Study, Dewinda Candrarukmi, Fitri Hartanto, Tunjung Wibowo, Hari W. Nugroho, Moh S. Anam, Braghmandita W. Indraswari, Qodri Santosa, Nazliah Hanum Feb 2025

Saudi Medical Journal

Objectives: To ascertain the prevalence of depressive symptoms and identify related risk factors among adolescents. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was carried out using an online questionnaire completed by 1,413 adolescents from Central Java and Yogyakarta Provinces، Indonesia. The validated Indonesian version of the Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI) was used to evaluate depressive symptoms. Results: Symptoms of depression were identified in 28.5% of participants. Multivariate analysis revealed important risk factors, including female gender (OR 3.962, 95% CI 2.684–5.849), having mother who is a housewife (OR 4.155, 95% CI 1.424–12.126) or works in labor/farming/self-employment (OR 3.665, 95% CI 1.216–11.051), residing with a …

Risk Factors For Peripheral Artery Disease-Related Amputations Among Black Americans, Darnell L. Blake Feb 2025

Risk Factors For Peripheral Artery Disease-Related Amputations Among Black Americans, Darnell L. Blake

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Evidence suggests that Black Americans (BAs) are at a significantly higher risk of peripheral artery disease (PAD)-related amputations. This study aimed to examine risk factors for non-traumatic lower extremity amputation (NTLEA) among BAs with PAD addressing a significant knowledge gap regarding racial disparities in PAD outcomes. Grounded in Bandura's social cognitive theory, which posits the interplay among personal factors, environmental influences, and behavior, this study examines how age, gender, income, and comorbidities like cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and diabetes influence NTLEA across various insurance types (private, Medicaid, Medicare, self-pay). This quantitative cross-sectional study used the 2020 National Inpatient Sample, 1% …

Reusing Underutilized Warehouses: Impact Of Iot Integration On Water Conservation In Hydroponic Farming Within Mina Zayed Warehouses In Abu Dhabi, Aysha Benyas Feb 2025

Reusing Underutilized Warehouses: Impact Of Iot Integration On Water Conservation In Hydroponic Farming Within Mina Zayed Warehouses In Abu Dhabi, Aysha Benyas

Theses

Urban farming is seen as an essential approach to sustainable development, particularly in arid regions like Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, where limited arable land and water resources pose significant challenges. With an emphasis on reusing underutilized urban spaces like the industrial warehouses in Mina Zayed, this thesis explores the transformative potential of shifting from conventional agricultural methods to advanced smart farming approaches. The main objective of this project is to optimize the effective use of urban areas and improve water conservation in agricultural operations by integrating Internet of Things (IoT) technology into hydroponic systems within these warehouses. The research …

In Vitro Hydrolysis Of Areca Nut Xenobiotics In Human Liver, Vincenzo Paolillo, Mahendran Jayakumar, Colton Sheperd, Andrew Tran, Stephanie Hoang, Nhu Dao, Parag Jain, Alan L Myers Feb 2025

In Vitro Hydrolysis Of Areca Nut Xenobiotics In Human Liver, Vincenzo Paolillo, Mahendran Jayakumar, Colton Sheperd, Andrew Tran, Stephanie Hoang, Nhu Dao, Parag Jain, Alan L Myers

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Areca nut (AN) is a substance of abuse consumed by millions worldwide, in spite of established oral and systemic toxicities associated with its use. Previous research demonstrates methyl ester alkaloids in the AN, such as arecoline and guvacoline, exhibit mood-altering and toxicological effects. Nonetheless, their metabolism has not been fully elucidated in humans. In the present study, an HPLC-UV bioanalytical method was developed to evaluate the hydrolytic kinetics and clearance rates of arecoline and guvacoline in human liver microsomes (HLM) and cytosol (HLC). The bioassay was capable of quantifying arecoline and guvacoline (and carboxylate metabolites arecaidine and guvacine, respectively) with …

Pain Is Modulated Differently Between Females With And Without Patellofemoral Pain: Factors Related To Sensitization, Kemery J. Sigmund, Marie K. Hoeger Bement, Wendy E. Huddleston, Kyle T. Ebersole, Jennifer E. Earl-Boehm Feb 2025

Pain Is Modulated Differently Between Females With And Without Patellofemoral Pain: Factors Related To Sensitization, Kemery J. Sigmund, Marie K. Hoeger Bement, Wendy E. Huddleston, Kyle T. Ebersole, Jennifer E. Earl-Boehm

Physical Therapy Faculty Research and Publications

Context

Patellofemoral pain (PFP) has poor long-term recovery outcomes. Central sensitization describes central nervous system changes altering pain modulation, which can complicate recovery (poorer prognosis and worse function). Signs of central sensitization include amplified pain facilitation, pain hypersensitivity, and impaired pain inhibition, which can be measured with temporal summation of pain (TSP), pressure pain thresholds (PPTs), and conditioned pain modulation (CPM), respectively. Sex differences exist for these test responses, but female-only PFP investigations of sensitization are uncommon. Understanding pain modulation in females with PFP could improve treatment protocols.

Objective

To determine whether females with PFP exhibit signs of central sensitization …
