Meditation Or Medication: Comparing Meditation To Phosphatidylserine In The Reduction Of Salivary Cortisol In Collegiate Tennis Players Post Exercise, Elizabeth Ann Novian Hughes

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a glycerophospholipid made in the body that is a part of the cell membrane (Carter & Greenwood, 2015; McArdle et al., 2019). PS reduces cortisol levels in the body (McArdle et al., 2019). Meditation is a “consistent self-care practice…that allows for developing loving awareness of current thoughts and feelings” (Valluri et al., 2024. Definition section, para. 1). Sadimi et al. (2021) used mindfulness meditation and found cortisol reductions were high. Meditation (MED) has not been compared to PS in reducing cortisol. Cortisol is increased in the body in response to the reception of stress input, such as …

Atherosclerosis: A Comprehensive Review Of Molecular Factors And Mechanisms, Vasiliki Tasouli-Drakou, Ian Ogurek, Taha Shaikh, Marc Ringor, Michael V. Dicaro, Kachon Lei

Department of Internal Medicine Faculty Research

Atherosclerosis, a condition characterized by the accumulation of lipids and a culprit behind cardiovascular events, has long been studied. However, in recent years, there has been an increase in interest in its initiation, with researchers shifting focus from traditional pathways involving the vascular infiltration of oxidized lipids and towards the novel presence of chronic inflammatory pathways. The accumulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines, in combination with the activation of transcription factors, creates a positive feedback loop that drives the creation and progression of atherosclerosis. From the upregulation of the nod-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome and the Notch and Wnt pathways to …

Forever Chemicals And Livestock: Exploring Contmination Of Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances On Farms And Assessing Usda's Role In Indemnification, Chance Mitchell Feb 2025

Forever Chemicals And Livestock: Exploring Contmination Of Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances On Farms And Assessing Usda's Role In Indemnification, Chance Mitchell

Natural Resources Journal

This article examines the limitations of existing federal authorities in addressing the growing threat of PFAS contamination in livestock production operations. While existing programs at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), such as the Livestock Indemnity Program, provide critical support for producers facing natural disasters, they do not cover losses related to toxic substances like PFAS. The only USDA program offering PFAS-related indemnity is the Dairy Indemnity Payment Program (DIPP), but its narrow scope limits coverage to dairy farms. Efforts to amend the statutory language of existing programs or create new ones face significant hurdles, including Congress’s rigid approach to …

Winter Hay-Feeding Effects On Soil Properties In A Rotationally Grazed Pasture System In The Ozark Highlands, Larry Berry, Kristofor R. Brye, Andrew Sharpley, Ron Morrow, Dirk Phillip, Tim A. Glover, James M. Burke, Mike B. Daniels

Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Soil nutrient management for pastures in Arkansas often ignores nutrients applied from feeding hay to cattle. Discounting nutrient contributions from hay may increase the likelihood of unnecessary fertilizer over-application. This study evaluated the effects of unrolling bales (unroll fed, UF) and using a ring feeder (ring fed, RF), compared to an unamended control, on changes in soil properties in the top 4 inches in a rotationally grazed, beef [red angus (Bos taurus)] pasture on silt-loam soils in northwest Arkansas. Forty-six cow-calf pairs were fed hay at 6.6 tons acre(-1) year(-1) (14.8 Mg ha(-1) year(-1); dry-weight basis) from December to February …

For most researchers, academic publishing serves two goals that are often misaligned-knowledge dissemination and establishing scientific credentials. While both goals can encourage research with significant depth and scope, the latter can also pressure scholars to maximize publication metrics. Commercial publishing companies have capitalized on the centrality of publishing to the scientific enterprises of knowledge dissemination and academic recognition to extract large profits from academia by leveraging unpaid services from reviewers, creating financial barriers to research dissemination, and imposing substantial fees for open access. We present a set of perspectives exploring alternative models for communicating and disseminating scientific research. Acknowledging that …

Ion suppression is a major problem in mass spectrometry (MS)-based metabolomics; it can dramatically decrease measurement accuracy, precision, and sensitivity. Here we report a method, the IROA TruQuant Workflow, that uses a stable isotope-labeled internal standard (IROA-IS) library plus companion algorithms to: 1) measure and correct for ion suppression, and 2) perform Dual MSTUS normalization of MS metabolomic data. We evaluate the method across ion chromatography (IC), hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC), and reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC)-MS systems in both positive and negative ionization modes, with clean and unclean ion sources, and across different biological matrices. Across the broad range …
