Coagulation, Fibrinolytic Parameters And Cytokines Response To Weight Reduction In Obese Saudi Women, Shehab Mahmoud Abd El-Kader, Shehab Mahmoud Abd E-Kader, Neveen Refaey, Amany Atiaa

Journal of Medical Rehabilitation Science

Background: Obesity is a relevant risk factor for major cardiovascular events due to the atherosclerotic involvement of coronary, cerebral and lower limb arterial vessels. A major role in the increased cardiovascular risk is played by platelets, which show an increased activation and a reduced sensitivity to the physiological and pharmacological anti-aggregating agents. However, no studies have been conducted to compare the effects of simple calorie restriction and those of calorie restriction combined with aerobic exercise on fibrinolytic, coagulative factors and cytokines. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of weight reduction on the fibrinolytic, coagulative factors …

Identification Of Lysosomal Lipolysis As An Essential Noncanonical Mediator Of Adipocyte Fasting And Cold-Induced Lipolysis, Yu-Sheng Yeh, Trent D. Evans, Mari Iwase, Se-Jin Jeong, Arick Park, Ali Ghasemian, Borna Dianati, Ali Javaheri, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Adipose tissue lipolysis is the process by which triglycerides in lipid stores are hydrolyzed into free fatty acids (FFAs), serving as fuel during fasting or cold-induced thermogenesis. Although cytosolic lipases are considered the predominant mechanism of liberating FFAs, lipolysis also occurs in lysosomes via lysosomal acid lipase (LIPA), albeit with unclear roles in lipid storage and whole-body metabolism. We found that adipocyte LIPA expression increased in adipose tissue of mice when lipolysis was stimulated during fasting, cold exposure, or β-adrenergic agonism. This was functionally important, as inhibition of LIPA genetically or pharmacologically resulted in lower plasma FFAs under lipolytic conditions. …

The Advanced Strategies Of Human And Donor Milk Fortification And Its Effect On Long-Term Outcome In Preterm Babies, Ashwini Lakra, Mahaveer Singh Lakra, Ishani Arora, Heena Bhandekar, Amar Taksande, Roshan Prasad, Mayur Wanjari

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Poor growth in intrauterine and extrauterine life and inadequate protein supplementation in babies during the first weeks of premature babies are linked to long-term growth failure and poor brain development. The calorie requirements of premature newborns cannot always be fulfilled, even with routine and traditional fortification. This is because traditional fortification procedures rely on the presumed well-known composition of human milk rather than the calculated one. The protein content of mothers' milk of preterm babies varies, decreases with breastfeeding duration, and differs with donor human milk being preserved in milk banks for a long duration. Newer fortification techniques are needed …

Duncan NRI Faculty and Staff Publications

Transcription Factor EB (TFEB) controls lysosomal biogenesis and autophagy in response to nutritional status and other stress factors. Although its regulation by nuclear translocation is known to involve a complex network of well-studied regulatory processes, the precise contribution of each of these mechanisms is unclear. Using microfluidics technology and real-time imaging coupled with mathematical modelling, we explored the dynamic regulation of TFEB under different conditions. We found that TFEB nuclear translocation upon nutrient deprivation happens in two phases: a fast one characterised by a transient boost in TFEB dephosphorylation dependent on transient calcium release mediated by mucolipin 1 (MCOLN1) followed …

Exploring The Mechanistic Interplay Between Chronic Inflammation And Gastrointestinal Cancer In The Gut Microbiome: A Review, Hanan Mohamed Abd Elmoneim

Saudi Toxicology Journal

There are complex and heterogeneous immunological milieus of the gastrointestinal system, so there is a high mortality rate from malignancies affecting the gastrointestinal system. The pathophysiology of cancer has long been thought to be significantly influenced by inflammation. However, several of the mechanisms underlying its tumor-promoting activities have only lately been discovered. Both beneficial and harmful microorganisms play a crucial role in controlling the host immune system and, eventually, inflammation. Furthermore, bacteria may also influence how a tumor develops through different mechanisms, including long-term inflammation activation, changes to the tumor microenvironment, and genotoxic response induction. A significant percentage of cancers …

The Sustainability Stones: Culturally Embedded Conservation Strategies And Their Vulnerability In Maupiti, French Polynesia, Russell Fielding, Fiona Gimenez

Honors College Faculty Publications

This paper explores culturally embedded conservation strategies through the lens of the traditional agroforestry and fisheries cycles in Maupiti, French Polynesia. By pairing certain breadfruit cultivars with specific fish species, the island’s community created a culinary system that regulates the seasonal consumption of marine resources, making the sustainable use of those resources more likely. While modern pressures such as reduced breadfruit diversity, competition with imported foods, and climate change have weakened these traditional practices, they remain an example of local ecological knowledge guiding conservation. The study highlights the threat of losing sustainable resource-use practices and biodiversity as both biodiversity and …
