Telogen effluvium is a form of non-scarring hair loss characterized by premature shedding of hair. Pathophysiologically, telogen effluvium occurs when a significant number of hair follicles prematurely enter the telogen phase, resulting in excessive shedding. The exact mechanism is unclear, but it is believed to involve alterations in the hair follicle's growth cycle, possibly mediated by illness, infection, major surgery, low protein intake, or hormonal changes. Some medications can also be linked to this disease, such as beta blockers, carbamazepine, and vitamin A. When affected hairs are in the resting phase, noticeable hair shedding occurs. Our patient was a 61-year-old …

Audience: Emergency medicine residents post-graduate years 1-4.
Introduction: Sodium bicarbonate is a compound found commonplace in many households and in many products. It lends itself to countless everyday uses including cooking and cleaning. Physicians prescribe sodium bicarbonate regularly both on- and off-label regularly for various ailments.1 Due to the ubiquitous way both emergency physicians and the general public use and are exposed to sodium bicarbonate, we wanted to prepare learners to identify and appropriately manage sodium bicarbonate toxicity.Obtaining a thorough history not just of medications prescribed but of significant ingestions or infusions is critical in diagnosing this toxicity. Furthermore, acute …
Struggling Access To Justice Through Mediation In Bangladesh: Headway Lessons From Australia, Jamila A. Chowdhury, Mehnaz Siddiqui
Struggling Access To Justice Through Mediation In Bangladesh: Headway Lessons From Australia, Jamila A. Chowdhury, Mehnaz Siddiqui
The Indonesian Journal of Socio-Legal Studies
Enormous case backlog and protracted delays in courts are hindering access to justice in Bangladesh. Consequently, an initiative to provide quick and low-cost consensual justice through mediation was first initiated in the family courts of Bangladesh in the year 2000. However, although after an initial success, the system has been struggling over the decades. While contemporary research has identified various constraints causing such meager disposal of cases in family courts, using expert interviews of family court judges and relevant literature review on Australian family courts, this Chapter reiterates such constraints to generate relevant headway lessons from Australia that has excelled …
The Effect Of Integrating Augmented Reality (Ar) Technology In Science Education Teaching On Improving The Biological Concepts Learning Among Kindergarten Children, Kawthar Habeeb
Journal of Educational and Psychological Studies
This quasi-experimental study explored the impact of AR on acquiring biological concepts among kindergarteners. The sample comprised 30 second-level kindergarteners from a school in Farwaniya Educational Directorate, Kuwait. Participants were randomly divided into an experimental group (n = 15), taught using AR, and a control group (n = 15), taught traditionally. Results revealed statistically significant di erences in biological concept understanding, favoring the experimental group. Additionally, the experimental group demonstrated significant improvement from pre-test to post-test stages. These findings highlight the potential of AR to enhance learning outcomes in kindergarten biology education. The study emphasizes the importance of integrating AR …

Bellinge, Marc Sim, Roslyn J. Francis, Sing Ching Lee, Dick C. Chan, Christian M. Girgis, Gerald F. Watts, Joshua R. Lewis, Carl J. Schultz
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Purpose: Diabetes mellitus (DM) confers an increased risk of fracture. Fracture risk stratification techniques are imperfect, and preventative therapies are sparse. We aimed to describe features associated with a dysfunctional bone metabolism determined by 18F-Sodium Fluoride Positron Emission Tomography (18F-NaF PET) in patients with DM and test the effects of vitamin K1 and colchicine therapy on vertebral 18F-NaF activity. Methods: This is a post-hoc analysis of a 2 × 2 factorial randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial. Participants aged 50–80 with DM underwent 18F-NaF PET/CT imaging at baseline, 3 months of therapy with vitamin K1 (10mg/daily) or placebo, and colchicine (0.5 mg/day) …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Vapour pressure deficit (VPD) and blue light (BL) are import signals for stomatal regulation and highly relevant during cultivation of economically important crops such as cucumber in controlled environments. However, the information about combined effects of VPD and BL and the regulation of abscisic acid (ABA) in this respect, is limited and seems to vary between species. This study investigated how moderate (1.12 kPa) or low (0.28 kPa) VPD combined with 5% or 30% BL affect the foliar ABA metabolism, transpiration rate, nutrient uptake, and growth in well-watered cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus ‘Quatro’). Additional BL, regardless of VPD, resulted in …

Recognizing the growing importance of this field, the Canadian Translational Geroscience Network (geroscience.ca) was officially launched during a conference held in Montreal on September 5-6, 2024. Building on the momentum of successful Geroscience meetings in Toronto and Montreal in 2023, this milestone event marked a transformative step forward for geroscience in Canada. This event brought together key stakeholders, including the Canadian Frailty Network (CFN), the Canadian Institutes …
Time Alters Distinct Memories Driven By Sensory Prediction Errors And Task Errors In Sensorimotor Adaptation, Li Ann Leow, Welber Marinovic, Scott Albert, Timothy J. Carroll
Time Alters Distinct Memories Driven By Sensory Prediction Errors And Task Errors In Sensorimotor Adaptation, Li Ann Leow, Welber Marinovic, Scott Albert, Timothy J. Carroll
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Prior learning can impair future learning when the requirements of the two memories conflict, a phenomenon termed anterograde interference. In sensorimotor adaptation, the passage of time between initial and future learning can reduce such interference effects, leading to the interpretation that time consolidates motor memories, protecting motor memories from interference. However, we still do not fully understand how time affects learning, as some studies found no effects of time on interference. One possible explanation for such inconclusive findings is that time has distinct effects on the multiple processes underpinning sensorimotor adaptation, and these processes may compensate for each other's effects …

Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Fish and other seafood products are an integral and valuable part of human diets. In advanced nations, the transportation of fish and other seafood products to customers requires packaging and display. Due to their intrinsic physicochemical properties, seafood products are particularly susceptible to microbial growth, resulting in shorter shelf lives and higher spoilage rates compared to other animal-derived proteins, such as meat. To prevent microbial spoilage and preserve the freshness and quality of fish and other seafood products, petroleum-based plastic materials are commonly used in combination with packaging technologies, such as vacuum packaging and modified atmosphere packaging. However, as these …

In contrast to chimeric antigen receptor T cells, T cell receptor (TCR)-engineered T cells can target intracellular tumor-associated antigens crucial for treating solid tumors. However, most trials published so far show limited clinical activity. Here we report interim data from a first-in-human, multicenter, open-label, 3 + 3 dose-escalation/de-escalation phase 1 trial studying IMA203, an autologous preferentially expressed antigen in melanoma (PRAME)-directed TCR T cell therapy in HLA-A*02+ patients with PRAME+ recurrent and/or refractory solid tumors, including melanoma and sarcoma. Primary objectives include the evaluation of safety and tolerability and the determination of the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) and/or recommended dose …

One in six youth has a neurodevelopmental disability (NDD), and autism diagnostic rates continue to rise. Before and after a diagnosis, families need trusted sources of guidance to navigate co-occurring medical and psychological conditions, and to manage unique stressors including transition to adulthood. However, medical professionals from all specialty areas struggle to identify resources to support the complex psychosocial and healthcare needs of these patients and their families. This primer on psychosocial supports for youth with autism will explore the major mental and physical health stressors faced by affected youth and families, and discuss opportunities for primary care and other …
