No. 45: Internal Migration, Climate Adaptation, And Food System Resilience In Namibia, Lawrence N. Kazembe, Ndeyapo Nickanor
Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network
As one of sub-Saharan Africa’s most arid countries, Namibia serves as a crucial example for studying the interactions between climate vulnerability, migration, and food systems. This study investigates how internal migration flows to Windhoek and northern towns (Oshakati, Ongwediva, Ondangwa) transform urban food networks while creating new patterns of risk and adaptation. Through household surveys, policy analysis, and stakeholder interviews, we uncover a paradox: despite escaping rural climate stressors, migrants often encounter new vulnerabilities such as precarious employment, inadequate housing, and unstable food access. However, they develop sophisticated adaptive strategies that span urban-rural divides: maintaining rural agricultural production through family …

Budget Tradeoffs Shape Food Insecurity Among U.S. Older Adults, Madonna Harrington Meyer, Colleen M. Heflin
Budget Tradeoffs Shape Food Insecurity Among U.S. Older Adults, Madonna Harrington Meyer, Colleen M. Heflin
Population Health Research Brief Series
For low-income older adults, it may be difficult to meet basic needs on a fixed monthly income. Stretching resources can be difficult, especially if unexpected expenses arise, leading many older adults to face difficult budget tradeoffs. Based on the book, Food for Thought: Understanding Older Adults Food Insecurity, this brief summarizes how budget tradeoffs between food and other essential expenses—housing, utilities, medical care, transportation, and personal and cleaning supplies—shape food insecurity among older adults.
Postpartum Conversion Type 2 Diabetes In African American Women With Gestational Diabetes, Guerino Tondreau
Postpartum Conversion Type 2 Diabetes In African American Women With Gestational Diabetes, Guerino Tondreau
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) remains a significant public health concern in the United States, with non-Hispanic Black women bearing a disproportionately high burden of the disease. Although this group has a lower overall prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), those who develop GDM face an increased risk of progressing to T2DM. The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to explore the relationship between GDM, physical activity, weight status, and T2DM development among non-Hispanic Black women. Secondary data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, collected from 2017 through March 2020, were analyzed. The health belief model served …

Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications
Context: When clinically stable, patients with A-β+ ketosis-prone diabetes (KPD) manifest unique markers of amino acid metabolism. Biomarkers differentiating KPD from type 1 (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) during hyperglycemic crises would accelerate diagnosis and management.
Objective: Compare serum metabolomics of KPD, T1D, and T2D patients during hyperglycemic crises, and utilize classification and regression tree (CART) modeling to distinguish these forms of diabetes.
Methods: At an urban hospital emergency center, adults with KPD, T1D, and T2D during hyperglycemic crises with or without diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), and healthy controls, underwent comparisons of serum metabolite and hormonal profiles and CART analyses. …

Enteral Nutrition Safety For Hospitalized Patients: A Call To Action For Nursing, Sandra Wolfe Citty, Mary Chew, Lynn Hiller, Lisa Maria
Enteral Nutrition Safety For Hospitalized Patients: A Call To Action For Nursing, Sandra Wolfe Citty, Mary Chew, Lynn Hiller, Lisa Maria
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Background: Enteral nutrition (EN) therapies are prescribed for hospitalized patients who are not able to maintain adequate nutrition through the oral route. If prescribed EN therapies are not administered or monitored in the prescribed manner, or the EN therapies are not accurately prescribed, patients are at-risk for harm. Medical errors and safety events related to EN therapy have been reported but are under-reported. Registered Nurses verify, administer, document, monitor, and assess impacts of prescribed EN therapies for hospitalized patients. Best practices such as standardized EN order sets, standardized EN administration and documentation systems, use of medication use process (MUP) for …
Effectiveness Of Telenursing On Self-Management In Geriatric Patients With Heart Failure, Pinar Yel, Aysenur Cetin Uceriz, Yasemin Ozer Güclüel
Effectiveness Of Telenursing On Self-Management In Geriatric Patients With Heart Failure, Pinar Yel, Aysenur Cetin Uceriz, Yasemin Ozer Güclüel
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Heart failure (HF), a syndrome caused by heart abnormalities, affects up to 20% of those over 75, leading to symptoms like dyspnea, fatigue, and edema. Effective self-management in HF involves adherence to medications, nutrition, exercise, symptom monitoring, and timely healthcare-seeking behavior. Telenursing offers remote support through virtual platforms, which research suggests may reduce hospital readmissions and improve the quality of life in HF patients. This study aims to explore the impact of telenursing on self-management in elderly HF patients, addressing gaps in knowledge about symptom control, self-care capacity, and quality of life. A systematic review was conducted using studies from …
