Patient Experience Journal
A Community Advisory Committee comprised of nine members with lived experience of kidney failure, identified the need for a patient-facing version of a mental healthcare pathway for people receiving dialysis in Alberta, Canada. Recognizing that healthcare tools to support person-centred care practices should be available in lay language, our team (comprised of Community Advisors and healthcare clinicians and researchers) co-designed a patient-facing pathway: “Your Journey: Coping with and Adjusting to Dialysis.” The Provincial Pathways Unit provided a template for the pathway, and the content was adapted through multiple online and in-person meetings with the Community Advisors. Adaptations were informed by …

A Case Report On Meeting The Spiritual Need Of Intubated Conscious Patient, Mahuya Karmakar, Santhna Letchmi Panduragan, Faridah Mohd Said
Patient Experience Journal
Nurses are showing more interest in including spiritual health to prevent and treat illnesses. For patients who can speak may ask for their spiritual need to the health care provider. But for intubated patients it.s difficult to express such needs. Most of the time caregivers focus on the physical parameters only for intubated patients. Apart from physical symptoms these patients also experience a variety of bio-psycho-socio-spiritual sensations. Research has shown that spiritual therapies can reduce distress, assist in preparing the patient for end-of life care, and enhance overall wellbeing along with improving their quality of life. The purpose of this …
Beyond The Numbers: Elevating Meaning Through Metrics In Patient Experience, Geoffrey A. Silvera
Beyond The Numbers: Elevating Meaning Through Metrics In Patient Experience, Geoffrey A. Silvera
Patient Experience Journal
This commentary submitted by Patient Experience Journal (PXJ) Associate Editor begins with a simple observation: sometimes, in our effort to measure everything, we miss what’s right in front of us. We look up at the data but fail to notice the larger shape taking form above it, something tall, quiet, and graceful that changes how we see the landscape. Patient experience work demands that we hold both the precision of metrics and the wonder of narrative to truly understand of patients’ experiences of care. Numbers tell us how we are performing and stories remind us why it matters. When we …

Heightened Awareness: A Quality Improvement Initiative To Optimize Ventilator Settings Through Accurate Measurements In The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Melina Burns West Msn, Rn, Ccrn, Cpn, Linda B. Esposito Dnp, Rn, Ccrn, Cssbb, Cphq
Nursing Research & Professional Development Conference
Background: Accurate height measurement is a critical component of patient care in the pediatric intensive care unit. In children with acute respiratory distress syndrome, appropriate ventilator settings improve clinical outcomes and reduce mortality. Ventilator tidal volumes are commonly based on predicted body weight, which is derived from patient height or length. Ensuring accurate and timely height documentation is essential for optimizing mechanical ventilation strategies for improved outcomes.
Local Problem: Ventilator settings were historically selected using patients’ actual body weight rather than the predicted body weight derived from their height. This approach did not align with pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome …
A Comprehensive Framework To Enhance Holistic Care For Postpartum Single Mothers, Stephanie Dumas
A Comprehensive Framework To Enhance Holistic Care For Postpartum Single Mothers, Stephanie Dumas
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Abstract Postpartum depression remains a significant challenge for single mothers who face emotional, financial, and social barriers with limited support. In Palm Beach County, Florida, where many households are led by single parents, existing services are often uncoordinated and lack trauma-informed approaches that address the realities of mothers during the postpartum period. The purpose of this qualitative action research study was to explore the perceptions of human services professionals regarding the trauma-informed and holistic care interventions needed to support single mothers experiencing postpartum depression. The Garbhasanskar holistic care framework, which emphasizes emotional well-being, mindfulness, and the creation of safe and …

Introduction: Depressive symptoms are common in the growing geriatric surgical population and are associated with important patient-centred surgical outcomes, including postoperative delirium, discharge to postacute care facility and decline in functional status. Few interventions have been developed to address depressive symptoms in the perioperative setting.
Methods and analysis: We designed a feasibility and acceptability study of a nine-session problem-solving therapy (PST) telehealth perioperative intervention aimed at reducing postoperative functional decline and depressive symptoms among at-risk older adults undergoing major surgical procedures. Acceptability will be evaluated using a patient-centred five-question survey, assessing participant satisfaction and perceived usefulness of the perioperative intervention. …

Latching On: Equity In Breastfeeding Education, Tara Anderson Ba, Rn, Cbc
Latching On: Equity In Breastfeeding Education, Tara Anderson Ba, Rn, Cbc
Nursing Research & Professional Development Conference
Background
Breastmilk is the optimal source of nutrition for newborns (WHO, 2019). Prenatal breastfeeding education best prepares families, yet not all patients attend hospital-offered classes due to associated fees. This gap may negatively impact knowledge and exclusive breastfeeding rates (Kehinde et al., 2022). To promote health equity, it is critical to provide accessible prenatal education to all patients, regardless of their ability to attend traditional classes.
Purpose
Our hospital aims to ensure all patients make informed infant feeding decisions. This project sought to provide prenatal breastfeeding education in outpatient Labor and Delivery Triage and evaluate its impact on patient knowledge …

Nursing Research & Professional Development Conference
Background: Lack of staff participation in verifying correct patient in conversations via phone or in-person has led to an increase in patient safety events within our site.
Local problem: While receiving telemetry monitoring, a patient experienced sustained bradycardia (slow heart rate). When the concern was initially escalated to the care team, there was confusion regarding which patient was experiencing the clinical decline. The lack of use of the high reliability tool read/repeat back and patient identifiers lead to a delay in escalation to the clinician and a clinical intervention delay. Ultimately leading to a major safety event.
Method: The safety …

Nursing Research & Professional Development Conference
Our nurses saw a rise in hospital-acquired pressure injuries in the stroke unit. NDNQI data showed we performed below the national mean in three out of four quarters. This project's aim was to identify gaps and create innovative solutions led by nurses, to reduce pressure injuries by 20%. Several factors contributed to the rise in pressure injuries, including length of stay, increase in acutely ill stroke patients due to bed designation, nutritional barriers, and mobility limitations. Post-covid, our unit experienced turnover, which resulted in new nurses being unaware of strategies used to prevent pressure injuries. Using the “5 Why” root …

Background
Taste alteration (TA) affects up to 70% of oncology patients receiving chemotherapy, leading to decreased dietary intake, malnutrition, and poor quality of life. TA is unreported due to lack of taste assessments or toxicity screening, with no known treatment. However, researchers have shown that breast cancer patients were able to control TA with a researcher-delivered intervention. Research is needed to translate this promising strategy for real-world clinical use with populations beyond breast cancer.
Purpose
The study is aimed at testing the effectiveness of a nurse-led TA intervention to reduce symptom intensity for oncology patients initiating chemotherapy.

Hylocereus species are promising for enhancing fruit productivity in arid regions, but high solar radiation often leads to yield loss. This study aimed to evaluate the short-term impact of different shading levels on the physiological performance, productivity, and post-harvest quality of Hylocereus costaricensis under semi-arid conditions. Plants were grown in the field under two shade levels, i.e., 35 and 50% and their performances were compared to plants under control, i.e., 0% of shade or full sunlight. The nighttime CO2 assimilation and productivity increased significantly by 310.5 and 114.6% and 34.3 and 50.14% for plants under 35 and 50% of …

Structural Determinants And The Ethics Of Health Inequity: Law, Poverty, And Prevention, Daniela Oehring
Structural Determinants And The Ethics Of Health Inequity: Law, Poverty, And Prevention, Daniela Oehring
School of Health Professions
Health inequity represents one of the most pressing ethical challenges of our time, manifesting as unfair and preventable differences in health outcomes that stem from broader social, economic, and structural conditions. This chapter examines the complex intersection of legal frameworks, philosophical theories, and jurisprudential interpretations that shape our understanding of health equity as both a public health imperative and a fundamental question of justice. Through a comprehensive analysis of international human rights law, declarations, and constitutional provisions, the chapter demonstrates how legal instruments have evolved to recognise health as a fundamental human right while establishing state obligations to address structural …

In the United States, pressure injuries are a severe health problem that affect over 2.5 million people while approximately 60,000 of the affected will die annually from complications or infections related to the pressure injury. However, few studies have explored associated factors in the middled-aged adult oncology patient population Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) are known to affect health and well-being; yet there is limited evidence that SDOH directly affect oncology patients and the risk for pressure injuries. This study will explore clinical factors associated with these social determinants of health, as well as several demographic categories such as race, …
The Impact Of Childhood Adversities On Prison Misconduct: A Study Based On General Strain Theory, Ellen Brefo Agyei
The Impact Of Childhood Adversities On Prison Misconduct: A Study Based On General Strain Theory, Ellen Brefo Agyei
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Drawing on General Strain Theory, this study examines how Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) shape the choice of coping mechanisms of inmates within correctional settings. While prior research has explored prison misconduct, little research has looked at the relationship between ACEs, negative emotions, and prison misconduct. To address this gap, this study uses the nationally representative dataset, Survey of Prison Inmates (SPI) conducted in 2016, to explore how ACEs affect prison misconduct and whether negative emotions mediate this relationship. Findings from the regression analyses suggest that inmates who experienced more ACEs experienced higher levels of negative emotions and were more likely …

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) affect millions annually, leading to devastating neurobehavioral consequences and increasing risk for neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases. However, therapies are lacking. Starting in 2018, dysbiosis of the gut microbiome was identified as an acute, and potentially chronic, pathology originating from TBI. Recent studies established that the microbiome contributes to the evolution of TBI pathology and functional impairments. The gut microbiome is the collection of microorganisms that inhabit the stomach through colon and is indicated as a contributor to myriad neurological and psychiatric conditions. This makes it an intriguing target to understand in the context of TBI. Thus, …

Epigenetic Landscape In Lysosomal Storage Disorders: Mechanisms And Modulation, Andrés Felipe Leal, Harry Pachajoa, Shunji Tomatsu
Epigenetic Landscape In Lysosomal Storage Disorders: Mechanisms And Modulation, Andrés Felipe Leal, Harry Pachajoa, Shunji Tomatsu
Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers
Lysosomal storage disorders (LSDs) are rare substrate-accumulating diseases primarily characterized by mutations in genes encoding proteins involved in lysosomal function, most of which have enzymatic activity. Resulting lysosomal dysfunction leads to the overaccumulation of non- or partially degraded substrates. While it is true that enzyme deficiency is the primary cause of LSDs, the epigenetic alterations in DNA methylation, miRNA expression, and histone modifications appear to be critical mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of LSDs. As epigenetic marks are, in most cases, reversible, their study becomes vital to developing strategies aimed at reversing epigenome alterations. Although classical therapeutic alternatives aim to …
