In September 2024, at a 17-hospital Midwest United States healthcare system, quality assurance and nursing staff identified that a standardized system-wide central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) prevention and maintenance policy did not exist. This revelation occurred after an investigation noted an increase in CLABSIs, an issue compounded as each of the organization's hospitals were without system-level guidance on the prevention of CLABSIs. Therefore, using the PICOT question “In high-risk patients (P), how do system-wide best practices/strategies (I) compared to current practice (C) affect CLABSI (O)?, a systematic review of the published literature was conducted using CINAHL, PubMed, Scopus, and Embase …

Freshwater planarians are an emerging model for toxicology and neuroscience because of their amenability to rapid behavioral screening and remarkable ability to regenerate a cephalized nervous system. As invertebrates, planarians can help reduce the use of vertebrates in research; however, laboratories typically maintain planarians on diets of homogenized organic beef or chicken liver, raising ethical concerns with feeding a vertebrate diet. Organic liver is difficult to obtain, and preparation methods vary, introducing intra- and interlaboratory variability. Here, we show that Dugesia japonica planarians can be maintained for over a year on commercially available red midge larvae (RML), a natural prey …

Around 3.5 million preterm births occur in India annually, accounting for about 25% of all preterm births worldwide. Prematurity poses a significant burden world-wide but leaves a special impact on the families and health systems of low-socioeconomic countries where easy and universal access to adequate health services is compromised. Premature birth imposes a significant risk of neonatal death among all under-fives due to organ immaturity, sepsis, and respiratory distress syndrome. Efforts to address prematurity on a global scale involve a multifaceted approach, including improving access to quality prenatal care, enhancing neonatal care services, and implementing public health interventions to reduce …

Environmental stressors such as drought, floods, salinity, extreme temperatures, and heavy metal toxicity are major threats to horticultural plants because they disrupt plant physiological mechanisms, leading to reduced yield and quality. Salicylic acid (SA) is a plant hormone that regulates various physiological and biochemical functions in plants. Moreover, it regulates hormonal balance, enhances the absorption of essential nutrients, promotes photosynthesis and the production of antistress compounds, and improves stress resistance. This comprehensive review explains several physiological and biochemical activities that are affected by SA under stressful conditions, such as stomatal regulation, antioxidant defense systems, osmotic adjustment and gene expression regulation. …
