Evaluation Of Processing Conditions For The Reduction Of Electrochemical Salt Waste Using Phosphate-Based Dechlorination, Harmony Werth, Jade Beland, Paige Murray, Dave Liang, Laurel Sharpless, Jonathan Evarts, Charmayne Lonergan, Brian J. Riley, Michael Simpson, Krista Carlson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electrochemical processing of used nuclear fuel in molten chloride salts generates complex radioactive salt waste. Dechlorination of waste salt using phosphate compounds at elevated temperatures (∼600 °C) reduces the volume of material for disposal while evolving gaseous chlorine compounds that could be used to transform metallic uranium into UCl3. In this study, the effects of processing temperature, environment (air or argon), and H3PO4 precursor-to-chlorine ratio on the dechlorination efficacy of a simple alkali salt mixture (SSM) and a salt waste simulant (ERV3) were evaluated. For both salts, the highest chlorine release was concurrent with the water boiling. For the SSM, …

Check All That Apply: The Persistence And Problem Of The Black/White Racial Binary In Iowa Public Schools, Jessica Nessan Kluck

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The promotion of monoracial normativity has profoundly influenced the language used in policies, creating societal expectations that other the identification of Black/white Biracial and multiracial identities. Despite the reality of our quickly shifting demographics, multiracial identities continue to be marginalized and misconstrued through racial reporting guidelines. Racial reporting used on forms required by the Iowa Department of Education are comingled with non-racially categorized data to further distance reality in education and the public-school rankings (Iowa Department of Education, 2012; State of Iowa, 2024).

The purpose of this study was to trace the legacy of the socially constructed racial binary, preserved …

The Organization Of Serotonergic Fibers In The Pacific Angelshark Brain: Neuroanatomical And Supercomputing Analyses, Skirmantas Janušonis, Ralf Metzler, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Serotonergic axons (fibers) are a universal feature of all vertebrate brains. They form meshworks, typically quantified with regional density measurements, and appear to support neuroplasticity. The self-organization of this system remains poorly understood, partly because of the strong stochasticity of individual fiber trajectories. In an extension to our previous analyses of the mouse brain, serotonergic fibers were investigated in the brain of the Pacific angel shark (Squatina californica), a representative of a unique (ray-like) lineage of the squalomorph sharks. First, the fundamental cytoarchitecture of the angel shark brain was examined, including the expression of ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba1, …

A Low-Frequency-Stable Higher-Order Isogeometric Discretization Of The Augmented Electric Field Integral Equation, Maximilian Nolte, Riccardo Torchio, Sebastian Schöps, Jürgen Dölz, Felix Wolf, Albert E. Ruehli Jan 2025

A Low-Frequency-Stable Higher-Order Isogeometric Discretization Of The Augmented Electric Field Integral Equation, Maximilian Nolte, Riccardo Torchio, Sebastian Schöps, Jürgen Dölz, Felix Wolf, Albert E. Ruehli

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This contribution investigates the connection between Iso geometric analysis (IGA) and integral equation (IE) methods for full-wave electromagnetic problems up to the low-frequency limit. The proposed spline-based IE method allows for an exact representation of the model geometry described in terms of nonuniform rational B-splines (NURBS) without meshing. This is particularly useful when high accuracy is required or when meshing is cumbersome, for instance, during the optimization of electric components. The augmented electric field IE (EFIE) is adopted, and the deflation method is applied, so the low-frequency breakdown is avoided. The extension to higher-order basis functions is analyzed and the …

A Non-Destructive And Simple Setup Method For Dielectric Liquid Characterization In A Wide Frequency Range With Djordjevic-Sarkar Model, Reza Vahdani, Reza Asadi, Seyedmehdi Mousavi, Xiaoning Ye, Donghyun Kim

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper introduces a non-destructive and simple setup method for characterizing dielectric liquids over a broad frequency range (up to 30 GHz) using the Djordjevic-Sarkar model. By employing a differential microstrip line and comparing scattering parameters in air-filled and liquid-immersed scenarios, the proposed method achieves precise dielectric constant (DK) and dissipation factor (Df) extraction. 2 Liquid samples (PAO4 and DC-15) were tested using this method. Validation against the cavity resonance method demonstrates a strong agreement for the extracted DK values, with a relative error of less than 1.5 %, indicating high accuracy. However, the method is less sensitive to Df, …

Extended S-Parameter Model Of The Power Distribution Network For Rapid Coupling Predictions, Cody Goins, Aaron Harmon, Mckennan Starkey, Kristen Donnell, Victor Khilkevich, Daryl Beetner

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Power and return planes are part of the power delivery network of almost all modern high frequency printed circuit boards. These power and return planes can form the basis of unintended radiated emissions from, or radiated coupling to, these boards. Predicting coupling to complex systems is a difficult problem and typically reserved for full wave simulations. Recent works have introduced segmentation approaches that are able to predict coupling to complex printed circuit board designs by using pre-rendered segments and cascading these segments through a circuit solver approach. The extended S-parameter models used by the segmentation approach currently do not include …

Gnnsynergy: A Multi-View Graph Neural Network For Predicting Anti-Cancer Drug Synergy, Zhifeng Hao, Jianming Zhan, Yuan Fang, Min Wu, Ruichu Cai

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Drug combinations play very important roles in cancer therapy, as they can enhance curative efficacy and overcome drug resistance. Due to the increasing size of combinatorial space, experimental screening for all the drug combinations becomes infeasible in practice. Therefore, there is a great need to develop accurate computational approaches that can predict potential drug combinations to direct the experimental screening. In this paper, we propose a novel method called GNNSynergy to learn drug embeddings for drug synergy prediction. Given a specific cancer cell line, we propose a multi-view graph neural network framework which considers the current cell line as main …

An End-To-End Bi-Objective Approach To Deep Graph Partitioning, Pengcheng Wei, Yuan Fang, Zhihao Wen, Zheng Xiao, Binbin Chen Jan 2025

An End-To-End Bi-Objective Approach To Deep Graph Partitioning, Pengcheng Wei, Yuan Fang, Zhihao Wen, Zheng Xiao, Binbin Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Graphs are ubiquitous in real-world applications, such as computation graphs and social networks. Partitioning large graphs into smaller, balanced partitions is often essential, with the biobjective graph partitioning problem aiming to minimize both the“cut” across partitions and the imbalance in partition sizes. However, existing heuristic methods face scalability challenges or overlook partition balance, leading to suboptimal results. Recent deep learning approaches, while promising, typically focus only on node-level features and lack a truly end-to-end framework, resulting in limited performance. In this paper, we introduce a novel method based on graph neural networks (GNNs) that leverages multilevel graph features and addresses …

The Gender Wage Gap In An Online Labor Market: The Cost Of Interruptions, Abi Adams, Kotaro Hara, Kristy Milland, Chris Callison-Burch

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper analyses gender differences in working patterns and wages on Amazon Mechanical Turk, a popular online labour platform. Using information on 2 million tasks, we find no gender differences in task selection nor experience. Nonetheless, women earn 20% less per hour on average. Gender differences in working patterns are a significant driver of this wage gap. Women are more likely to interrupt their working time on the platform with consequences for their task completion speed. A follow-up survey shows that the gender differences in working patterns and hourly wages are concentrated amongst workers with children.

Imagine being in a university that functions in a place-based culturally regenerative way. In this concept paper, the authors bring together theory, practice, and experience, in the service of transforming universities towards place-based cultural regeneration. At present, Australian universities operate using an economic philosophy of neoliberal corporatism characterised by hierarchical management strategies, competitive tendencies, patriarchal values, and discourse characterised by bifurcation or binary thinking. These features illustrate a worldview that is entangled with the meta crises of our times such as climate change, species loss, hatred/intolerance, and unfathomable violence. The authors consider ways of moving towards a place-based, Indigenous-informed, practical, …
