Generative Ai And Finding The Law, Paul D. Callister Jan 2025

Generative Ai And Finding The Law, Paul D. Callister

Faculty Works

Legal information science requires, among other things, principles and theories. The article states six principles or considerations that any discussion of generative AI large language models and their role in finding the law must include. The article concludes that law librarianship will increasingly become legal information science and require new paradigms. In addition to the six principles, the article applies ecological holistic media theory to understand the relationship of the legal community’s cognitive authority, institutions, techné (technology, medium and method), geopolitical factors, and the past and future to understand the changes in this information milieu. The article also explains generative …

Defining The Field Of Wellness Law, Barbara Zabawa Jan 2025

Defining The Field Of Wellness Law, Barbara Zabawa

Faculty Works

Some lawyers practice “wellness law” without knowing what it is and how it differs from more recognized fields of practice such as health law, public health law, and medical malpractice. This article defines the field of wellness law using in a prescriptive manner the organizational framework that identifies the common and distinctive patterns in wellness and the law that surrounds it. This examination entails reviewing statutes and cases that differentiate between conventional health care and products or services outside of it to identify the core problems that are common and unique to wellness law. Those core problems are twofold. First, …

Nothing Short Of Superheroic: A Quantitative Study Of Lifetime Exposure To Superhero Comic Book Media As A Predictor Of Attitudes Towards Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion, Michael Nguyen Jan 2025

Nothing Short Of Superheroic: A Quantitative Study Of Lifetime Exposure To Superhero Comic Book Media As A Predictor Of Attitudes Towards Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion, Michael Nguyen

Theses and Dissertations--Educational Leadership Studies

This dissertation examined the relationship between lifetime exposure to superhero comic book media and attitudes toward diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Drawing on theories of identity formation—transitional objects, parasocial relationships, and cultivation theory—it investigated whether engagement with superhero narratives predicted DEI attitudes. Using quantitative methods, data from 499 U.S. adults were collected via Qualtrics. Two instruments were used: the Lifetime Superhero Comic Book Media Exposure Scale (LSES) and the Intolerant Schema Measure (ISM), which assessed prejudice across race, gender, sexuality, class, age, and religion. Multiple linear regression revealed that superhero media exposure significantly predicted ISM scores (B = 0.118, …

Molecular Mechanism Of Vibrio Cholerae Biofilm Adhesion, Xin Huang Jan 2025

Molecular Mechanism Of Vibrio Cholerae Biofilm Adhesion, Xin Huang

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Bacterial biofilms are surface-attached communities of bacterial cells enclosed in an extracellular matrix formed on environmental surfaces and host tissues. Biofilm formation represents a common strategy in facilitating host colonization and infection by human pathogens, and the polymeric matrix provides a mechanism for drug and host immune resistance by acting as a barrier around biofilm-dwelling cells. Bacteria often express multiple adhesive proteins (adhesins), but it is often unclear whether adhesins have specialized or redundant roles. Here, we combine mutagenesis, biochemistry, single-cell imaging, and bioinformatics to show how Vibrio cholerae, the causal agent of pandemic cholera, uses two biofilm-specific adhesins …

Social Purpose Reit, Evan Absher Jan 2025

Social Purpose Reit, Evan Absher

The United States grapples with a severe housing affordability crisis, often attributed to restrictive zoning laws, speculative private equity investment, and policy deficiencies. Each of these factors contributes to the housing shortage, but addressing any single factor in isolation is insufficient to resolve the underlying issue. A holistic solution requires increasing housing availability across the entire affordability spectrum through both the production of new units and the preservation of existing affordable housing.

This article argues the misalignment of interests among key local stakeholders—residents, community organizations, and investors is the fundamental cause of the housing crisis. Realignment requires a transformation of …

Disruption Of The Rhogef Trio In Neurodevelopmental Disorders Leads To Impairments In Multiple Domains Of Function, Amanda Jeng Jan 2025

Disruption Of The Rhogef Trio In Neurodevelopmental Disorders Leads To Impairments In Multiple Domains Of Function, Amanda Jeng

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) affect the normal development and function of the brain, and include disorders such as autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and epilepsy. While these are diagnostically distinct disorders, NDDs share considerable comorbidities and present with overlapping symptoms. In addition, the risk genes for NDDs overlap significantly, further suggesting shared underlying pathology of these disorders. Mutations in the gene TRIO are enriched in individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders. TRIO encodes a large multidomain protein with two guanine nucleotide exchange factor domains for the Rho family of small GTPases and a putative kinase domain, as well as multiple …

Lost In Translation: An Analysis On How Florida’S Broadcast Meteorologists Navigate Bilingual Communication During Severe Weather, Daniella Streety, Cassandra O’Connor, Brooke Page, Jennifer Collins

Weather, Climate, and Society REU

  • Florida frequently experiences various types of severe weather year-round, which requires clear and timely communication for public safety.
  • Broadcast meteorologists play an important role in translating weather alerts into understandable and actionable information.
  • About 30% of Florida residents speak a language other than English at home, with Spanish being the most common, presenting challenges for risk communication during 2 severe weather events.
  • Previous studies show gaps in bilingual messaging still exist, despite national efforts by agencies like NOAA and the NWS. This leaves broadcast meteorologists 1 at a disadvantage due to a lack of resources.
  • This study explores …

From Pathological Bifurcations To Meaningful Planetary Change Agents, Brad Tabas, Linda Gardelle, Klara Kovesi, Una Beagon

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

This chapter discusses and analyzes the phenomenon of pathological bifurcation among French engineering students. Pathological bifurcation occurs when sustainable development succeeds in inspiring student activism, but that passion expresses itself destructively. The chapter answers two questions. First, we interrogate whether pathological bifurcation is a product of lacunae with current SD education practices. Having answered affirmatively, we reflect on how to treat this diagnosis. Our suggestion is that if SDG related curricular innovations are desirable, so too is an extensive grounding in the traditional teachings of what we call planetary humanities. These are lessons drawn from around planet inculcating the very …

A Post-Foundational Ontology For A Democratic Instrumentality Of Education, Abdellatif Atif, Noel Fitzpatrick Jan 2025

A Post-Foundational Ontology For A Democratic Instrumentality Of Education, Abdellatif Atif, Noel Fitzpatrick

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Education theory has been exhibiting a renewed rejection of education’s instrumentality to political and economic influences against a policy trend that implicitly considers education a mere pragmatic tool. This paper suggests an ontological investigation that goes beyond normatively supporting or rejecting the instrumentality of education. It looks at instrumental relationships as a form of prosthesis supplementing the ontological incompleteness of its involved subjects. This incompleteness is argued for through Laclau and Mouffe’s understanding of antagonism and Bernard Stiegler’s philosophy of technics. The contribution problematizes the ethical consequences such reading may have, manifested in the ethical ambivalence of instrumental ends. Then, …

What Drives Customers To Engage With Social Commerce: A Systematic Review And Factor Derivation Approach, Abdelsalam Busalim, Shahla Asadi

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Social commerce (s-commerce), as a new form of e-commerce, has transformed customer behavior with the rise of social networking sites (SNSs). This development has created new opportunities for online businesses seeking to establish customer-centric operations and leverage the power of SNSs by implementing effective customer engagement strategies for a competitive advantage. However, limited effort has been devoted to evaluating the current state of research in this area and consolidating the factors that drive individuals to engage in s-commerce. Therefore, this study conducted a Systemic Literature Review (SLR) to explore existing research on s-commerce and customer engagement, employing a factor derivation …

Fructose Induces Metabolic Changes Distinctly Different From Glucose In A N2a Cell Line., Catherine A. Ghigleri

All Master's Theses

Over the last 50 years, there has been a rise in diagnoses of Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias associated with metabolic stress. This parallels an increase in fructose consumption and has led to research on the effects of fructose on the hippocampus, a brain structure responsible for learning and long-term memory formation. The hippocampus is also a region of the brain that metabolizes fructose. Experiments using animals fed diets containing fructose have shown a correlation between fructose consumption, learning impairment, and structural changes to the hippocampus in animals’ brains. However, the effects of fructose on hippocampal neurons have not been …

Evaluating Geoai-Generated Data For Maintaining Vgi Maps, Lasith Niroshan, James D. Carswell

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Geospatial Artificial Intelligence (GeoAI) offers a scalable solution for automating the generation and updating of volunteered geographic information (VGI) maps—addressing the limitations of manual contributions to crowd-source mapping platforms such as OpenStreetMap (OSM). This study evaluates the accuracy of GeoAI-generated buildings specifically, using two Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) models. These are OSM-GAN—trained on OSM vector data and Google Earth imagery—and OSi-GAN—trained on authoritative “ground truth” Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSi) vector data and aerial orthophotos. Altogether, we assess map feature completeness, shape accuracy, and positional accuracy and conduct qualitative visual evaluations using live OSM database features and OSi map data as …

A Fear Of Ideas? Social Media, Foreign Influence, And National Security In A New Era Of Great-Power Competition, Michael Park

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

The recent spate of legal restrictions on the use of TikTok and other foreign-controlled social media applications highlight concerns over personal data collection, but also how fears over the potential foreign influence of ideas from adversarial foreign governments—whether by propaganda, censorship, or disinformation—have re-emerged in the national security debate. Yet there are concerns that this new era of great power competition will be the basis for justifying overreaching speech regulations that hinder access to information and ideas under the aegis of national security. This work attempts to examine the recent enactment of speech restrictions or bans on foreign-controlled applications within …
