Explainable Ai For Liver Transplant Survival Prediction: Integrating Immunological Mismatch Features, Sourab Shaik
Explainable Ai For Liver Transplant Survival Prediction: Integrating Immunological Mismatch Features, Sourab Shaik
Honors Projects
Liver Transplantations are crucial treatment for end-stage liver disease. However, a persistent deficit of donor organs necessitates maximizing the utility of each available graft to minimize failure rates. We evaluated whether donor–recipient molecular immunogenicity metrics - Electrostatic and Hydrophobic Mismatch Scores (HMS/EMS) and eplet-based counts - improve post–liver-transplant survival prediction. The analytic cohort comprised adult, first time, single-organ deceased-donor transplants drawn from Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients; follow-up was truncated at five years, and the endpoint was all-cause graft failure (earliest of graft failure or death; otherwise, censored). HLA variables were derived via high- resolution conversion and molecular mismatch computations …

Strategies For Improving Supported Employment Services For Adults With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Janelle Latoya Bailey
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There is a growing need for supported employment services and improved programming among people with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD). The research question for this study was; what are human service staff and administrators’ experiences and perceptions of what is working well in supported employment programs, and how to improve the services offered to adults with I/DD in a northeastern county? The tenets of Kurt Lewin’s change model form the theoretical framework for the study, to serve as a foundation for effective change. A force field analysis approach was used to gather narrative written data from open ended questionnaire responses to grasp …

Computational Molecular Docking Of Fluorinated Morphine Derivatives For Improved Pain Management, Mirabella Romano, Emily Chen
Computational Molecular Docking Of Fluorinated Morphine Derivatives For Improved Pain Management, Mirabella Romano, Emily Chen
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
The opioid epidemic impacts 60 million people worldwide every year. Morphine, a commonly prescribed opioid, binds to the μ-opioid receptor (MOR) in the body via protonation of its tertiary amino group and the MOR. An unfortunate side effect of this binding process is its non-selectivity in both peripheral and central tissues. While activation within inflamed peripheral tissues results in pain relief, activation within central tissues results in the unwanted and addictive side effects of opioids. Because there is a discrepancy in pH between healthy (central) and inflamed (peripheral) tissue, selective binding within the inflamed tissues could provide pain relief without …

Bridging Machine Learning And Islamic Scholarship: A Study In Hadith Translation And Similarity Analysis, Asiyah R. Speight
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Translation of Islamic religious texts poses unique challenges requiring both linguistic and theological expertise. This study explores the application of neural machine translation (NMT) models to Arabic-English hadith translation while analyzing semantic similarity patterns across different human translations. Using the complete Sahih Bukhari corpus (7,550 hadiths) as the primary dataset, we adopt a dual approach combining transfer learning and comprehensive neural network analysis to demonstrate the critical impact of corpus size on model performance.
First, we fine-tune a pre-trained MarianMT Arabic-English translation model on the full Sahih Bukhari corpus, comparing models trained on 40 hadiths versus 7,550 hadiths. Performance is …
A Generative Ai Pipeline For Rare Road Scenario Augmentation From Existing Training Datasets, Debarghya Goswami
A Generative Ai Pipeline For Rare Road Scenario Augmentation From Existing Training Datasets, Debarghya Goswami
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
Autonomous Vehicle (AV) systems have the potential to transform the transportation ecosystem significantly by improving safety and accessibility. One of the core components of any AV is a real-time object detection system. It helps an AV localize its position in the surrounding environment and perform tasks such as maneuver planning and obstacle detection. To make a deep-learning-based object detection system safe and robust, it must be trained on diverse and rare scenarios that can occur in road conditions. However, it is expensive and time consuming to manually create training datasets containing rare road objects or conditions. Synthetic training data can …

Efficient Routing For Software-Defined Wireless Sensor Networks: A Naïve Bayes Approach, Amine Tcherak, Samia Loucif, Mohamed Ould Khaoua
All Works
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) form the backbone of Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is an emerging networking paradigm that extends the lifetime of WSNs by transferring the resource-intensive routing task from sensor nodes to a centralized controller. However, many SDN-based routing schemes for WSNs employ inefficient algorithms at the controller. Traditional shortest-path methods often create traffic imbalances across neighboring nodes, while Reinforcement Learning (RL)-based approaches typically generate excessive control traffic. Both issues accelerate energy depletion and reduce network lifetime. Moreover, existing algorithms frequently overlook critical factors, such as buffer occupancy, when selecting relay nodes, which can lead …

Global-Local Method For Poroelasticity Problems With Localized Pressure Effects, Hemantha Kunwar
Global-Local Method For Poroelasticity Problems With Localized Pressure Effects, Hemantha Kunwar
Math Department Colloquium Series
In many poroelasticity applications, pressure effects are confined to a small region, making it inefficient and possibly unnecessary to solve the full system across the entire domain. Instead, we propose to solve the poroelasticity problem locally, where pressure effects are significant, and use a simpler linear elasticity model elsewhere. This creates a coupled elasticity–poroelasticity problem with transmission conditions. To solve this coupled problem, we propose a new non-intrusive global–local algorithm that iteratively solves the elasticity problem in the entire (global) domain and the poroelasticity problem only in a local domain, ensuring proper transmission conditions across the interface. This approach, which …

Show, Don't Tell: Looking For New/Old Strategies For Assessing Design Work, Kristina Andersen, Joep Frens, Janet Yi-Ching Huang
IASDR Conference Series
Design education is centered on making and reflecting, as a way to `work through' the process of becoming a designer. To do this, we rely on project-based learning that often culminates in reports alongside demonstrations and show-and-tell. Over the years, we have seen an increased reliance on language to validate student design ideas, and written reflections have become a way of assessing learning. With Generative AI becoming more widespread, such deliverables risk becoming less reflective or even meaningless. At the same time, some of our students treat written reflections as a necessary evil to be done on the eve of …

This paper explores how through visual analysis of contemporary design of typographic systems in Colombia, it is possible to create a custom framework for clustering and analysis to help recognize the possible emergence of cultural signals of colonised communities and cultural groups. Based on that framework we described these signals in four categories: Abstracted indigenous heritage (cultural revival); hybrid graphic vernacular (vernacular typography); Indigenous linguistic forms (direct linguistic revival); and hybrid cultural abstraction (indirect linguistic revival). We argue that local/regional type design and typography are increasingly serving as a medium of cultural resistance (intentional or unintentional), where designers engage with …
