Exploring Student Engagement In Urban Public High Schools: An Improvement Science Study, Ashley Hunter Freeman
Exploring Student Engagement In Urban Public High Schools: An Improvement Science Study, Ashley Hunter Freeman
Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)
This Dissertation in Practice began with a simple question about student engagement and ended with a framework for systemic change. Set in Harborview Public High Schools, an urban and historically under-resourced district, the study examined how educators define engagement, the barriers that limit it, and the supports needed to strengthen it. Fragmented initiatives and inconsistent practices have hindered the development of a coherent classroom-anchored engagement strategy. Guided by an Improvement Science framework, this study used a twophase convergent mixed methods design that included questionnaires, focus groups, educator reflections, and classroom observations.
The first phase focused on professional discourse and sharing …

Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Arab Refugees: Access To Public Housing And Integration In Dallas County, Texas., Salam Lattouf
Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Arab Refugees: Access To Public Housing And Integration In Dallas County, Texas., Salam Lattouf
Planning Dissertations - Archive
Past research in the Global North has overlooked the housing issues faced by low-income refugees while primarily examining disadvantaged communities and people of color, such as low-income African American and Hispanic populations. Refugees coming to the United States face compound challenges and barriers in securing adequate housing, besides contending with other social and economic difficulties such as language barriers and lack of knowledge in the housing market, which expose them to exploitation and eventually impact their access to opportunities such as employment. Although the literature on housing accessibility for refugees is scarce in the United States, we argue that the …

Processing Warfare And Navigating Defeat: The Mexican Narrative Constructed During The Mexican American War Of 1846-1848, Hailee Brandt
Undergraduate Research Awards
It is undeniable that the citizens of Mexico and the United States of America processed the Mexican American War as it occurred in exceedingly different ways, and wished to remember it differently. This thesis will delve deeper into the Mexican narrative that was constructed during and in the immediate aftermath of the war, about the war, and will highlight some of the most salient differences.
Unto The (Data) Breach, Charlotte A. Tschider
Unto The (Data) Breach, Charlotte A. Tschider
Faculty Publications & Other Works
Since the early 2000s, U.S. courts have begun hearing “data breach” liability cases, the inevitable result of a growing internet-connected technology infrastructure. The relatively recent development of case law signals a body of law in development, stunted by significant limiting factors that prevent the coalescence of legal principles. To date, no holistic empirical exploration of data breach cases has offered sufficient detail to explore these factors. This descriptive empirical study analyzes, in detail, 225 data breach cases from 2005–2022, reviewing these cases over an extended period to descriptively identify key trends and changes within a bona fide data breach case’s …

Rct Pre-Post Training Analysis Of The Vipcorps Maternal Mortality Prevention Course With A Focus On Intimate Partner Violence (Ipv), Rose A. Wood
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Maternal mortality rates rob families across the U.S. of a mother figure, and each death is preventable. The U.S. has the highest maternal mortality rate of high-earning countries. This study assesses the effects of the VIPCorps program, a course on the top 3 risk factors of maternal mortality, on improving knowledge and attitudes towards victims of IPV. Students in helping professions at the University of Kentucky (n = 223) were recruited via on campus advertising and remotely allocated to either the VIPCorps program or a mock maternal mortality training control. Generalized linear modeling was used to estimate the difference in …
Trends In Missing Race And Ethnicity Data In A National Surgical Database, Kevin Gao Hu
Trends In Missing Race And Ethnicity Data In A National Surgical Database, Kevin Gao Hu
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Accurate data collection on race and ethnicity is critical to detecting and characterizing disparities in surgical care. This study explores the prevalence and impact of missing race and ethnicity data in the National Surgical Quality Improvement Project Pediatric (NSQIP Pediatric) database. NSQIP Pediatric from 2016-2020 was assessed for patients who were missing data for race (RM), ethnicity (EM), or both (BM). Changes in proportion of RM, EM, and BM patients were assessed with Cochran-Armitage tests. Surgical outcomes were modeled using linear mixed-effects models, treating CPT codes as random effects. Models were bootstrapped with 1000 iterations for each outcome. Of 596,571 …
Indirect Requests: Sociopragmatic Aspects Of Non-Conventionalised Indirect Directives, Hammed Mohammadpanah
Indirect Requests: Sociopragmatic Aspects Of Non-Conventionalised Indirect Directives, Hammed Mohammadpanah
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
Directives are divided into three types, corresponding to different levels of explicitness. To get a hearer who has left the front door open on a cold winter night while taking off their shoes, one can use a direct directive (e.g., Close the door!), a conventionalised indirect directive (e.g., Can you close the door?), or a non-conventionalised indirect directive (e.g., It’s –15 outside.). Inherently implicit in nature, non-conventionalised indirect directives (NCIDs) have been understudied due to being the most context-dependent and form-independent type of directives, which underscores the central role of context-based inferencing and contextual salience in processing and studying them. …
The Influence Of Gender On Perceptions Of Warmth And Competence In Leaders, Atticus Carroll
The Influence Of Gender On Perceptions Of Warmth And Competence In Leaders, Atticus Carroll
Open Access Master's Theses
Humans rely on stereotyping to simplify and process a complex world. The Stereotype Content Model (SCM) identifies two main dimensions of stereotyping known as warmth and competence. Previous literature has focused on perceptions of cisgender men and cisgender women, referring to those whose gender identity aligns with their sex assigned at birth, along these dimensions. However, nonbinary individuals reject the traditional gender binary, and it is not known how warmth and competence perceptions will be applied to this demographic. This study investigated whether a nonbinary leader would be rated lower on warmth, competence, and desire to have as a boss …
"These Are The Concepts Of The Father": Proclus' Solution To Parmenides' Dilemma, Daniel J. Grifferty
"These Are The Concepts Of The Father": Proclus' Solution To Parmenides' Dilemma, Daniel J. Grifferty
Theses and Dissertations--Modern and Classical Languages, Literature and Cultures
This master’s thesis will attempt to solve a dilemma presented by Parmenides in Plato’s dialogue of the same name. This dilemma arises because the young Socrates suggests that the forms may be thoughts that come to be in the soul. Parmenides responds to this statement by attempting to force Socrates to admit that this can only lead to one of two outcomes: (1) each thing thinks because it is composed of thoughts or (2) each thing does not think, even though it is composed of thoughts. Both of these outcomes are unsatisfactory and do not provide a solid grounding for …
Woke-Lahoma: Anti-Trans Ideology On The Frontlines, Sarah H. Fogel
Woke-Lahoma: Anti-Trans Ideology On The Frontlines, Sarah H. Fogel
Theses and Dissertations--Geography
The past decade (2015-2025) of American politics has been marked by a sharp rise in anti-trans politics. Indeed, during this period, anti-trans rhetoric and legislation have become central to American conservative politics more broadly. As the Republican party under Donald Trump works daily to remake the federal government in its image, studying the recent past of Republican-controlled states like Oklahoma offers a window into the future of anti-trans politics at the national scale. This thesis uses a mix of discourse analysis of anti-trans media and participant observation at 2SLGBTQ+ Pride events to analyze the ideological underpinnings of the present-day anti-trans …
Yaoi Lesbians: Media, Identity, And Desire, Olivia Marquardt
Yaoi Lesbians: Media, Identity, And Desire, Olivia Marquardt
Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics
Media consumption reflects aspects of identity while also assisting in identity formation (Koller, 2008; Zemmels, 2012; Wu, 2006). This thesis examines the phenomenon of lesbians who engage with men-loving-men (MLM) media. The practice seems odd due to the contrast of lesbians desiring women for their social, platonic, romantic, and sexual relationships, but this thesis finds that repeated consumption of media that display men and their desires can index lesbianism. This practice helps lesbians construct their identities through three processes of indexicality: indexical disjuncture, indexical bleaching, and indexical denial (Barrett & Hall, 2024). Through a discourse analysis of five semi-constructed interviews …

Analyzing Agency In Online News Reporting Of The Events Of January 6th, 2021: A Corpus-Based Investigation, Matthew W. Abernethy
Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics
Over the last decade or so, politics in the United States has become increasingly polarized. A central focus of this polarization has been the news media, including both traditional print news, online news, and television news. Results of this have been a rapid rise in misinformation, disinformation, the demonization of news (especially political) providers as purveyors of ‘Fake News’, and distrust in mainstream news outlets. The central focus of this thesis is bias in news reporting, leading naturally to the question of how widespread this bias really is. This thesis uses corpus linguistic and discourse analytic methods to pursue this …
Trashing Gender Scripts: Indexical Misrecognition In The Zine "Galatea's Naked", Jules Blank
Trashing Gender Scripts: Indexical Misrecognition In The Zine "Galatea's Naked", Jules Blank
Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics
Zines, short for ‘fanzines’ or ‘magazines,’ refer to physical, printed, self-published creations that can consist of a single sheet of paper or many, fastened together. These artifacts are rich with meaning—and, thus, can be read as tangible manifestations of the ideologies and identities of the creator(s).
This thesis focuses on the way zines are used as tools of resistance. Additionally, it shows that the creation and circulation of zines are highly pragmatic acts that solidify social bonds and enable individuals to perform and reinforce their emergent identities within a collective—explicitly making a claim about who they are and what they …
Cognate Facilitation And Processing In English-Speaking Learners Of German, Kaitlin L. Young
Cognate Facilitation And Processing In English-Speaking Learners Of German, Kaitlin L. Young
Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics
Within the field of second language acquisition, research finds that increased exposure to input results in improved proficiency, especially when those activities are challenging yet manageable for the language learner’s current level. Because of this, listening exercises and speech processing are considered integral to language acquisition, even leading to recommendations of frequent, authentic use of the target language (TL). Instructors’ TL authenticity is, however, sometimes stunted by the demand for comprehensible input and facilitation of classroom activities; they make use of simpler syntax, stronger enunciation, and more cognates (words sharing origins, meanings, and form across languages) than in casual speech. …
Orthographic Errors For Dysgraphic Second Language Learners In Russian And Hebrew, Kyra O. Morgan
Orthographic Errors For Dysgraphic Second Language Learners In Russian And Hebrew, Kyra O. Morgan
Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics
Students of Second Languages might be asked to learn new writing systems in the classroom. This study is interested in how dysgraphic students, that is, students with a specific learning impairment with regards to written expression, make errors in comparison to their peers. These errors revolve around orthography, spelling, and spacing. However, this study will take a turn and focus on how all of the respondents understood the prompt and what that says about their relationship with writing in the classroom.

Hugo Chávez, El Camino Hagiográfico: Religión Y Bolivarianismo En La Construcción Discursiva Del Culto A Un Presidente, Lilia Malavé Conley
Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies
This dissertation examines the discursive construction of the political-religious cult surrounding Hugo Chávez through a theoretical and methodological approach that integrates Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA). Its central objective is to identify and interpret the incorporation of elements from the Venezuelan religious imaginary–particularly from popular Christianity–into the symbolic configuration of Chávez as a sacred figure within official discourse. The corpus analyzed includes official transcripts from the television program Aló Presidente, as well as two animated short films titled Chávez Nuestro que Estás en el Cielo (“Our Chávez Who Art in Heaven”), broadcast on Venezuelan public …
Paratum Fuit: Double Perfect Marking In Classical Latin Passives, James F. Epperson Ii
Paratum Fuit: Double Perfect Marking In Classical Latin Passives, James F. Epperson Ii
Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics
Despite thousands of years of study, certain constructions in Latin remain insufficiently described in modern Latin linguistics. One such construction is the double perfectum, an analytic verbal construction comprising the perfect passive participle and a perfectum forms of the auxiliary esse. These forms are rare, largely absent from educational Latin materials, and receive limited attention in scientific descriptions of Latin, often focusing on their evolution into the modern Romance verbal systems. Pinkster (2015) identifies them within a broader class of resultative constructions, but acknowledges their inconsistent usage. Earlier scholars, such as Riemann (1927), interpreted them as stative, while others, like …
Ideals And Idealization: Responding To Rawls And His Critics, Clayton J. Houdeshell
Ideals And Idealization: Responding To Rawls And His Critics, Clayton J. Houdeshell
Theses and Dissertations--Philosophy
In A Theory of Justice, John Rawls argues that any participant taking on the role as impartial spectator in his original position thought experiment would select “justice as fairness” as the most reasonable theory of justice to reorganize a basic structure’s system of institutions and public rules. In this dissertation it is my aim to outline seven criticisms of the Rawlsian account related to his method of ideal theory, the rationality and values of the impartial spectator, the instilment of a particular conception of the good and an aversion to non-liberal theories, and argue that each of them fail to …
Exploring Healthcare Access In Telehealth Through Spanish-Speaking Patients’ Perspectives: A Scoping Review, Abigail J. Verst
Exploring Healthcare Access In Telehealth Through Spanish-Speaking Patients’ Perspectives: A Scoping Review, Abigail J. Verst
Theses and Dissertations--Communication Sciences and Disorders
Background: Telehealth offers a potential solution to addressing access barriers experienced by Spanish-speaking patients. This scoping review aimed to explore whether a comprehensive view of healthcare access is being considered when creating telehealth programs for Spanish-speakers. The Conceptual Framework of Access to Healthcare (Levesque et al., 2013) was used to guide access analysis.
Methods: A literature search was conducted across three databases to identify empirical studies in the United States that reported Spanish-speaking patients’ perspectives of telehealth through quantitative questions. Data was collected from the included articles to characterize the type of healthcare providers and telehealth modalities examined in the …
Practicing Clinicians' Views Of The Life Participation Approach To Aphasia Therapy, Stephanie H. Mays
Practicing Clinicians' Views Of The Life Participation Approach To Aphasia Therapy, Stephanie H. Mays
Theses and Dissertations--Communication Sciences and Disorders
The Life Participation Approach to Aphasia therapy (LPAA) aligns with a person-centered, functional approach to speech therapy. Past research has demonstrated that persons with aphasia (PWA) benefit from this approach and prefer it when compared to the traditional medical model to therapy. However, a disconnect between PWA preferences and SLP treatment approaches in therapy persists. This study aims to identify both barriers and facilitators that SLPs face when implementing LPAA. Five CCC-SLPs practicing in the state of KY with experience working with PWA were recruited as participants. Participants were placed into two focus groups, with each group meeting for 2-3 …
Investigating The Impacts Of Peer Support And Online Information Seeking In Chronic Pain Online Health Communities, Aaron Necaise
Investigating The Impacts Of Peer Support And Online Information Seeking In Chronic Pain Online Health Communities, Aaron Necaise
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Chronic pain is a highly prevalent medical condition that contributes to intense emotional distress and social isolation in patients. With the growth of social media, online health communities (OHCs) have become a popular resource for patients to learn about their pain and establish social connections with peers. Although there is some evidence suggesting that curated online resources can benefit patient well-being, social media interactions have the potential to propagate medical misinformation and negativity. This dissertation expands upon the Social Communication Model of Pain to examine how interactions within social media-based OHCs impact chronic pain and uncover practical insights into OHC …
A Comparative Analysis Of Figurines From The Lower Rio Verde Valley From Oaxaca, Raynaliz C. Velazquez
A Comparative Analysis Of Figurines From The Lower Rio Verde Valley From Oaxaca, Raynaliz C. Velazquez
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This thesis investigates 618 ceramic figurines from the Lower Río Verde Valley in Oaxaca, Mexico, to explore how figurine use varied across civic-ceremonial, domestic, and outlying contexts during the Terminal Formative and Late Classic periods. The central hypothesis proposes that figurines from the Río Viejo Acropolis, a civic-ceremonial center, would be larger and exhibit greater labor investment than those from residential and peripheral sites, reflecting more labor-intensive ideologies and ceremonial practices. Through typological, spatial, and material analysis, the study examines attributes such as size, surface treatment, production method, and the presence of musical elements. The dataset includes newly analyzed figurines …

Exploring The Experience Of Heart Disease Among Burmese Immigrants In The United States, Khup S. It
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
The ongoing political and military turmoil in Myanmar has resulted in a significant increase in the migration of Burmese individuals to the United States in recent years. This demographic shift has brought attention to the health challenges faced by Burmese immigrants, particularly with regard to heart disease (heart attack). The complexities of the U.S. healthcare system, compounded by legal and social barriers, place immigrants at greater risk for health disparities. This study examines the health challenges of Burmese immigrants in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with a specific focus on their perceptions and experiences related to heart disease, as explored through illness narratives. …
Large Language Models And Networks: Edge Proposal, Synthetic Corpora, And Adaptive Node Generation, Nathan Gonzalez
Large Language Models And Networks: Edge Proposal, Synthetic Corpora, And Adaptive Node Generation, Nathan Gonzalez
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) have evolved from brittle rule-based engines through data-driven statistical models to today’s transformer architectures whose multi-head attention enables rich contextual reasoning. Against this backdrop, this dissertation unifies three complementary investigations that deepen our understanding of how large language models (LLMs) can reason over, generate, and strategically adapt language within networked settings. First, instruction-tuned LLMs are recast as latent-relationship detectors: by prompting models to hypothesize links between text-described entities, we recover edge sets that reconstruct social, thematic, and citation graphs with high precision, revealing how attention distributions encode topological cues. Recognizing the difficulty …
Advanced Large Language Model Approaches And Natural Language Processing Techniques To Improve Hate Speech Detection Using Ai, Saad Almohaimeed
Advanced Large Language Model Approaches And Natural Language Processing Techniques To Improve Hate Speech Detection Using Ai, Saad Almohaimeed
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
The proliferation of hate speech on social networks can create a significant negative social effect, making the development of AI-based classifiers that can identify and characterize different types of hateful speech in messages highly important for stakeholders. While this is a highly challenging problem, recent advances in language models promise to advance the state of the art such that even subtle and indirect forms of hate speech can be detected.
In this dissertation we present a series of contributions that improve different aspects of hate speech classification. We developed THOS, a hate speech dataset consisting of 8.3k tweets. Compared to …
Modeling Data Metrics And Distributions For Representation And Efficient Transfer Learning, Li Ren
Modeling Data Metrics And Distributions For Representation And Efficient Transfer Learning, Li Ren
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Representation Learning and Transfer Learning are fundamental challenges in deep learning, particularly for downstream computer vision tasks. While existing research predominantly focuses on loss functions and network architectures, this dissertation explores how modeling distance metrics and data distributions can enhance representation and transfer learning efficiency in computer vision applications, specifically focusing on image captioning and retrieval tasks.
We make contributions primarily in three subareas. First, we develop an image captioning system that leverages geometric relationships among objects using a novel object graph structure, enhancing global visual representations for more accurate caption generation. We further incorporate adversarial learning to model data …

Down By The Tracks, Ova ‘Cross The Trussle: Exploring Systemic And Structural Barriers To Perinatal Healthcare Access For Black Women In Rural Alabama, Trinity C. Johnson
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This dissertation uses semi-structured interviews (n=42), participant observation, archival research, and storytelling, it employs frameworks of structural violence, intersectionality, and reproductive justice to situate Black women’s maternal health within broader histories of racialized medical neglect and reproductive governance. The study explores two questions: (1) What obstacles do Black women in rural Alabama face in accessing perinatal healthcare? (2) How do they navigate these barriers, and what strategies do they employ? A mixed-methods approach—including ethnography, quantitative analysis, and GIS—guides this research, with storytelling serving as both a methodological intervention and a challenge to dominant anthropological narratives. Findings highlight three major themes: …
