Low Caregiver Engagement In Elementary Education: Exploring The Barriers And Importance Of Meaningful Engagement, Brooke A. Millevoi Jan 2025

Low Caregiver Engagement In Elementary Education: Exploring The Barriers And Importance Of Meaningful Engagement, Brooke A. Millevoi

West Chester University Master’s Theses

Low caregiver engagement in elementary education endures as a significant challenge, with substantial implications for students’ academic achievement, social-emotional development, and overall well-being. Despite decades of research affirming the importance of strong home-school partnerships, systemic inequities, rooted in historical, structural, and policy-based barriers, continue to limit meaningful collaboration between educators and caregivers, particularly in underserved communities. This thesis examines the disconnect between caregivers and key aspects of students’ educational experiences, including academic progress, classroom behavior, and school participation. In response, this work presents the design and implementation of a targeted caregiver engagement program that seeks to dismantle these barriers, foster …

All That May Become A Man: Dynamics Of Gender And Violence In Macbeth, Lauren M. Schuster Jan 2025

All That May Become A Man: Dynamics Of Gender And Violence In Macbeth, Lauren M. Schuster

West Chester University Master’s Theses

The text of Shakespeare’s Macbeth is rife with the language of gender crisis, with the titular character and his wife struggling against the repressive nature of patriarchal gender norms. It is this conflict between individual gender expression and societal ideals of gender that underscores the play’s central conflict, with Lady Macbeth’s rejection of typical femininity as an inciting force for the murder of King Duncan and the chaos that follows. In my reading of Macbeth, I focus on the rhetoric of material sex and gender performativity. In doing so, I examine what such rhetoric suggests about the patriarchal structures …

Intergenerational Classification Of Reddit Comments Based On Slang And Emoji Usage, James T. Dracup Jan 2025

Intergenerational Classification Of Reddit Comments Based On Slang And Emoji Usage, James T. Dracup

West Chester University Master’s Theses

The rapid evolution of language, driven by technological advancements, has created notable cultural gaps between generations, particularly in how they communicate. This gap is most apparent in the growing use of slang and emojis among younger generations. This study aims to explore whether Reddit comments can be classified by generation based on the usage of slang and emojis, the frequency of their use across generations, and how such features (slang and emojis) might influence the meaning of traditional language. Using Reddit’s API, we collected comments from four generational subreddits and applied various machine learning models, Naïve Bayes, Neural Networks, and …

Reassessing The Role Of Polynesian Rats (Rattus Exulans) In Rapa Nui (Easter Island) Deforestation: Faunal Evidence And Ecological Modeling, Terry L. Hunt, Carl P. Lipo Jan 2025

Reassessing The Role Of Polynesian Rats (Rattus Exulans) In Rapa Nui (Easter Island) Deforestation: Faunal Evidence And Ecological Modeling, Terry L. Hunt, Carl P. Lipo

Anthropology Datasets

The role of introduced Polynesian rats (Rattus exulans) in the deforestation of Rapa Nui remains a contentious issue. Several critics, including Mieth and Bork (2010), argue that rats played a negligible role compared to human impacts. We address the role of rats through three lines of evidence: (1) a response to rats-are-neglible arguments, including problematic continental analogies and misunderstandings of seed predation impacts; (2) analysis of rat remains from Anakena excavations (1986-2005) showing that rats decreased by 93% over time, contradicting claims they served as a “fallback food” following resource depletion; and (3) ecological modeling demonstrating that introduced …

La Integración De La Literatura Chicana En La Enseñanza Del Español Como Lengua Adicional Hacia La Competencia Cultural Y Lingüística En Ee.Uu., Marina Linares Klauke Jan 2025

La Integración De La Literatura Chicana En La Enseñanza Del Español Como Lengua Adicional Hacia La Competencia Cultural Y Lingüística En Ee.Uu., Marina Linares Klauke

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Textualism As A Pro-Employee Force In Employment Discrimination Law, Alex Reed Jan 2025

Textualism As A Pro-Employee Force In Employment Discrimination Law, Alex Reed

The University of Chicago Business Law Review

Textualism has gotten a bad rap, at least insofar as employment discrimination law is concerned. Derided by antidiscrimination scholars as an interpretive smokescreen concerned less with faithfully construing statutory text than reliably yielding pro-employer results, textualism is understood to pose an existential threat to employment discrimination law. This Article challenges academic orthodoxy by demonstrating that, in practice, textualism is correlated with employee-favorable outcomes. Specifically, the Article examines a subset of the Supreme Court’s major employment discrimination cases over the past thirty years and finds that textualism is twice as likely to be associated with outcomes benefiting employees than it is …

Describing And Understanding The Use Of Coaches For Eating Disorder Recovery: A Mixed Methods Study, Taylor E. Penwell

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Individuals with eating disorders (EDs) experience high rates of relapse and delays in accessing treatment. Considering these factors, individuals with EDs may seek out non-traditional support, such as coaching services (e.g., an unlicensed individual providing support). However, there is currently no research on individuals with EDs’ experiences with using coaching services for ED recovery. The current study aimed to a) describe who is utilizing coaching support, b) describe coaching services received, c) evaluate the motivations for seeking coach support, and d) evaluate the perceived impact of coach support on an individual’s ED recovery. Participants included 86 adults with a self-reported …

Document Encoding Effects On Large Language Model Response Time And Consistency, Dianeliz Ortiz Martes, Nezamoddin N. Kachouie Jan 2025

Document Encoding Effects On Large Language Model Response Time And Consistency, Dianeliz Ortiz Martes, Nezamoddin N. Kachouie

Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications

Large language models (LLMs) such as GPT-4 are increasingly integrated into research, industry, and enterprise workflows, yet little is known about how input file formats shape their outputs. While prior work has shown that formats can influence response time, the effects on readability, complexity, and semantic stability remain underexplored. This study systematically evaluates GPT-4’s responses to 100 queries drawn from 50 academic papers, each tested across four formats, TXT, DOCX, PDF, and XML, yielding 400 question–answer pairs. We have assessed two aspects of the responses to the queries: first, efficiency quantified by response time and answer length, and second, linguistic …

Transformer Models For Paraphrase Detection: A Comprehensive Semantic Similarity Study, Dianeliz Ortiz Martes, Evan Gunderson, Caitlin Neuman, Nezamoddin N. Kachouie

Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications

Semantic similarity, the task of determining whether two sentences convey the same meaning, is central to applications such as paraphrase detection, semantic search, and question answering. Despite the widespread adoption of transformer-based models for this task, their performance is influenced by both the choice of similarity measure and BERT (bert-base-nli-mean-tokens), RoBERTa (all-roberta-large-v1), and MPNet (all-mpnet-base-v2) on the Microsoft Research Paraphrase Corpus (MRPC). Sentence embeddings were compared using cosine similarity, dot product, Manhattan distance, and Euclidean distance, with thresholds optimized for accuracy, balanced accuracy, and F1-score. Results indicate a consistent advantage for MPNet, which achieved the highest accuracy (75.6%), balanced accuracy …

The Experience Of Child Language Brokering In Latin/Hispanic Students: Understanding How Clb Shapes Attitudes Towards Higher Education, Noemi Maldonado

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Immigrants often pursuing a better life than that in their own places of birth migrate to the states. In order to make lives in the states they bring their families with them or begin to create their own already inside the host country. With little knowledge of the place, they arrive and with nothing more than the help of their children, they seek to find a place in the society they became a part of. Immigrant children or those who come from migrant families often must help their parents, caretakers, or extended family manage the English language and American culture …

Let The Punishment Fit The Crime: Interpreting Application Of Joint And Several Liability To Criminal Asset Forfeiture Post-Honeycutt, Anna Gowen Jan 2025

Let The Punishment Fit The Crime: Interpreting Application Of Joint And Several Liability To Criminal Asset Forfeiture Post-Honeycutt, Anna Gowen

Georgia Law Review

This Note analyzes the intricacies surrounding the application of joint and several liability to criminal asset forfeiture, particularly following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Honeycutt v. United States. Starting with a historical analysis of asset forfeiture’s early use in civil contexts to the application of forfeiture in the criminal context under statutes like RICO, this Note addresses the tension between the Eighth Amendment right to receive punishment proportional to the crime and the government’s incentives to pursue forfeitable assets. This Note then recounts a previous circuit split over the permissibility of joint and several liability in criminal asset …

Afghan Students Are More Than Just English Learners, Farilla Saboor Jan 2025

Afghan Students Are More Than Just English Learners, Farilla Saboor

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This thesis examines the strengths that Afghan students and their families bring to U.S. schools and how these strengths are often overlooked. Drawing on my experience as an Afghan immigrant, math teacher, and bilingual instructional aide, I explore how Afghan students, parents, and teachers describe these cultural, linguistic, and relational assets that shape students’ learning and sense of belonging. I use the Community Cultural Wealth (CCW) and Funds of Knowledge (FoK) as guiding frameworks to understand the aspirational, linguistic, familial, social, navigational, and resistant capital present in participants’ experiences (Moll et al., 1992; Yosso, 2005).

I conducted qualitative interviews with …

Joseph Smith Jr. As A Translator: The Book Of Abraham As A Case Study, Stephen O. Smoot Jan 2025

Joseph Smith Jr. As A Translator: The Book Of Abraham As A Case Study, Stephen O. Smoot

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

This paper examines Joseph Smith’s approach to translation, using the Book of Abraham as a case study to explore the interplay between divine revelation and human participation in scriptural production. While the Book of Abraham incorporates both ancient and modern elements, its unique synthesis resists simple categorization as either an unblemished Abrahamic autograph or a purely nineteenth-century pseudepigraphon. Drawing on historical evidence and textual analysis, this paper aims to illuminate Joseph Smith’s role as both translator and revelator, offering insights into how Latter-day Saints might understand the complex process of producing sacred texts.

Listening To Cursive: The Roles Of Regional Identity And Folk Beliefs In Perceptual Cue-Weighting, Stella Takvoryan Jan 2025

Listening To Cursive: The Roles Of Regional Identity And Folk Beliefs In Perceptual Cue-Weighting, Stella Takvoryan

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

Listeners use knowledge acquired from experiences to weight phonetic-level cues to phonological contrasts. Phonetic knowledge is imbued with expectations about the contexts in which cues covary, speakers of a variety, and identity categories or constructs, so it can be challenging to distinguish expectations about variation from expectations about speakers. This study aims to explore the extent that expectations about iconic vowel quality variation in Southern American Englishes can drive cue-weighting. Listeners categorized stimuli with vowel qualities synthesized from an [ɛ]-[eɪ] continuum from a Southern and a non-Southern talker, with duration manipulated in tandem. Half of the participants saw a label …

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This study investigates the role of languages, specifically English, in an Indonesian-Filipino multilingual and mixed-marriage family and the impacts on language practices. The data was collected through interviews, recordings, and observations. The Family Language Policy (flp) serves as a conceptual framework for understanding the presence of language ideologies and practices inside a family. The findings indicate that Bahasa Indonesia and Javanese are primary languages, while Tagalog occupies a minority position due to limited usage in Indonesia. English is deemed to play a key role in communication and work purposes. Parents’ attitudes regarding the importance of English are reflected in their …

Ai, Post-Truth Realities, And Thai Students’ Information-Seeking Behavior, Pavel Slutskiy Jan 2025

Ai, Post-Truth Realities, And Thai Students’ Information-Seeking Behavior, Pavel Slutskiy

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper investigates how ai challenges traditional verification, citation, and evaluation principles, thereby eroding truth. ai-generated content, lacking verifiable citations, operates on probabilistic models that present information as probable rather than factual. The widespread reliance on ai for information-seeking risks diminishing critical evaluation, blending fact with fiction, and compromising academic integrity. To explore these effects, a mixed-method study was conducted involving 240 Chulalongkorn University students who used various online resources like Google, Wikipedia, and ChatGPT to research Rudolf Carnap’s verificationism views. Their choices were analyzed to assess dependency patterns on these platforms. Further, a qualitative analysis compared ai-generated responses with …

A Contrastive Analysis Of Passive Markers In Japanese And Thai : Factors Influencing The Use Of The Passive, Kanokwan Laohaburanakit Katagiri, Somkiat Chawengkijwanich

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper analyzes passive markers in Japanese, -(r)are-, and Thai, thùuk/dōon, focusing on factors influencing passive use, a previously underexplored topic. It examines similarities and differences between the languages, noting Japanese’s broad adaptability of passive forms across different verbs, unlike the more constrained use in Thai. The study also highlights unique Japanese factors such as adherence to an animacy hierarchy, self-projection, subject continuity, and intransitive-like functions, contrasted with verb-specific restrictions and conveyance of unique meaning in Thai.

Politics And Popular Culture : Contextualizing The Use Of K-Pop By Indonesian Political Parties, Ghaziah Nurika Akhni, Amalia Nur Andini

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This research examines the role played by popular culture in shaping favorable perceptions of three prominent Indonesian political parties – gerindra, psi, and pan – in the 2024 election. Employing a comprehensive framework by Inthorn et al. (2013 in Loader, Vromen, and Xenos 2016) delineating three dimensions of social use in celebrity politics, namely, (1) knowledge, (2) identity, and (3) evaluation, this paper scrutinizes the political communication strategies employed by these parties during their respective political campaigns. The empirical findings provide a nuanced understanding of the historical underpinnings and incorporation of K-pop as a political communication strategy within the Indonesian …

Sexual Politics On Youtube : Shifting Values In Femininities And Women’S Empowerment, Porranee Singpliam Jan 2025

Sexual Politics On Youtube : Shifting Values In Femininities And Women’S Empowerment, Porranee Singpliam

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This research examines sexual politics in the new media platform YouTube. The gendered notions studied depart from existing scholarly works as they emphasize the process of change in Thai gender order. A mixed research method combining qualitative and quantitative approaches was employed. The findings from studying five women YouTubers show two significant themes: 1) The politics of the sexes in which society’s admiration of material possessions, individualism, and wealth is evident, and 2) A change in sex/gender relations wherein production, consumption, and accumulation relations shift together with power relations. Ultimately, this research contends that women YouTubers should be read as …

Sugar-Cane And Sugar In The Vietnam – Singapore Relationship : Regional Commercial Network And Royal Trade, 1820–1847, Cao Thi Van, Ninh Thi Sinh

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Existing literature on nineteenth-century trade from Vietnam focuses extensively on the trade of rice and opium, which formed the majority of commerce. This paper investigates another principal export, sugar, to examine how this commodity was produced and traded in Vietnam. It starts with a short description of the history of sugar cane cultivation and sugar manufacturing in Vietnam. An attempt will also be made to clearly demonstrate that Vietnam became a significant sugar supplier to the British Straits Settlements and other Southeast Asian markets via Singapore as a transit port. The development of Vietnam’s sugar trade was related to the …

Empowering Women : Indonesian Muslim Girl Fans, Thailand’S Y-Series, And Gender Equality, Ranny Rastati, Md Azalanshah Md Syed

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This article explores how Indonesian Muslim girl fans experience sexual empowerment through watching Thai dramas portraying homoerotic romances, known as Thai Y-series and Thai Boy’s Love. Despite concerns from local Islamic authorities about moral issues and cultural differences, Y-series have gained popularity among Indonesian Muslim girls. This study raises concerns about the diminishing portrayal of women’s gender roles, given that Muslim girls form the majority of the Y-series fanbase in Indonesia. The patriarchal influence in Y-series appears to be gradually replacing traditional women’s roles with male characters, relegating women to supporting roles. This study argues that the repositioning of gender …

Reencountering Trade Legacies, Indigenous Histories, And The Early Leopoldine Society Circle In The Vienna Weltmuseum, Michael Burri Jan 2025

Reencountering Trade Legacies, Indigenous Histories, And The Early Leopoldine Society Circle In The Vienna Weltmuseum, Michael Burri

German Studies Faculty Works

This chapter concerns the Great Lakes Indigenous peoples whose artifacts may be found in the Vienna Weltmuseum. It situates these artifacts within the larger framework of exchange modalities among Indigenous peoples, together with the Leopoldine Society, an organization founded in Vienna in 1829 to minister to German-speaking Catholics in North America. To convey this framework, the chapter recalls Indigenous artifact collections of British officers active in the region, as well as the gift giving of Odawa leader Jean-Baptiste Assiginack. It also devotes close attention to Georg Schwarz, whose inventory of Indigenous artifacts remains the centerpiece of the North American collection …

Habsburg Encounters With Native America: Familiar Strangers, J. Singerton, M. Křížová, Michael Burri

German Studies Faculty Works

The central European lands of the Habsburg monarchy have long shared an intertwined past with the Indigenous inhabitants of the Americas. This volume focuses on the process of encountering these peoples as a continual action across several centuries that has produced numerous and varied instances of cultural dialogues, perspectives, and understandings. Moreover, this central European element is something that has not been considered in its own right before now and has been overshadowed by the focus on a wider Germanic fascination for Indigenous cultures. Breaking away from this wider narrative allows us not only to recover a more distinct historical …
