Educating Students On The Behavioral And Psychological Aspects Of Romance Scam Victimization Via A Social Engineering Competition, Rachel Bleiman, Hwanhee Park, Aunshul Rege

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

The online dating industry generated 2.98 billion USD in 2023 and is estimated to reach 3.6 billion USD by 2025. Not surprisingly, online dating platforms are rife with romance scams that cause financial damages, with estimated losses of 1.3 billion USD in 2022 alone. Additionally, victims suffer emotional and psychological harms. This paper shares findings from a 2023 Romance Scam and Social Engineering Competition (RSSEC) that introduced students to the behavioral and psychological aspects of romance scams. Specifically, the competition aimed to expose students to (i) understanding how victims experience social engineering (SE) - the psychological manipulation of human behavior, …

Nature-Based Education As A Learning Tool: Unleashing The Power Of Nature-Based Education In Egyptian Primary Schools. "The Effects Of Outdoor Learning And Open-Air Classrooms On Primary School Students In Egypt.", Nermeen Bekhiet

Theses and Dissertations

When learning modalities are tailored to each student's preferences and needs, academic success follows. This effect is contingent upon both individual and surrounding factors. Many schools in Egypt and the Middle East do not concentrate on how exposure to nature and nature-based learning can affect how the learner perceives his or her learning area. Most schools in Egypt have no exposure to nature to allow students to explore the world in their way; there is no room for diverse students to excel. Therefore, this exploratory research aims to reestablish a connection between private primary school students and the natural world …

The Dementia Care Partner Hub: An Innovative Approach To Addressing Unmet Social And Health Needs, Sherril Gelmon, Jenn Reed, Walter D. Dawson

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

The well‐being of care partners of people living with dementia, who are family, friends, or neighbors and often unpaid, is often not addressed explicitly in clinical dementia care. Care partners, especially those from systematically marginalized communities, experience substantial unmet social and behavioral needs. We reviewed role model programs and conducted focus groups and interviews with care partners and representatives of community organizations and government agencies. We developed the concept of a Dementia Care Partner Hub as a “one‐stop shop” to connect dementia care partners and service providers with information and resources, meeting a need that is not currently addressed in …

A Forgotten Dimension Of Naval Diplomacy—The Production Of Social Capital In The National Interest, Nell Bennett, Adam Lockyer

Naval War College Review

Naval diplomacy is a key noncombat mission for fleets to engage in as they communicate their nations’ broader political objectives. Most literature focuses on how different platforms affect this communication but neglects the social dimension of naval diplomacy and how personal relationships supplement and impact the strategic landscape.

The Future Arrives On Flight 11: 9/11, The Crisis Of Meaning, And Disinformation In The 21st Century, Jason A. Thomas Feb 2025

The Future Arrives On Flight 11: 9/11, The Crisis Of Meaning, And Disinformation In The 21st Century, Jason A. Thomas

Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal

Peter Pomerantsev has argued that, because the Soviet Union lost the Cold War, Russia had to adapt to a new epistemological world – a new way of knowing – more quickly than the “West;” He posits the fall of the Soviet Union as a defining moment in the development of disinformation as it is today. In this paper, the author builds on Pomerantsev’s argument to explore the idea that 9/11 triggered a similar epistemic shift in American society and that the ensuing traumas created a crisis of meaning that helps to explain the prevalence of disinformation in contemporary American discourse. …

Filipino American Parents' Experiences With The United States Special Education System: A Qualitative Study, Greyagail Custodio Surio

Theses and Dissertations

While there have been studies on Asian American (AA) parents' experiences with the U.S. special education (SPED) system, there have been no studies on Filipino American (FA) parents' experiences with the SPED system. As FAs are the third largest Asian group in the United States., there is a need for special education research to be conducted with this population. Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) interviews were conducted over Zoom with FA parents of children receiving SPED services. Participants resided in various states in the United States (n = 10). Participants reported varied and nuanced experiences related to advocacy, working with the …

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

The Andronovo Culture, which originated from the Sintashta Culture, played a significant role in the migration of populations across the Eurasian steppe. The Tianshan Mountains, situated at the eastern end of Eurasian steppe, became the main distribution area of Andronovo culture in Xinjiang during the Late Bronze Age (LBA). To investigate the genetic structure, genetic diversity, and possible migration routes of the Late Bronze Age Andronovo population, we conducted mitochondrial genomes analysis on 12 individuals excavated from the Shihuyao cemetery in the Central Tianshan of Xinjiang. The results revealed that Shihuyao population exhibited high genetic diversity, and a close genetic …

Association Between The Lack Of Health Insurance, Income, And The Severity Of Negative Perinatal Outcomes Among Native Spanish- And English-Speaking Women Living In Florida, Khadijeh Ashktorab

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Evidence indicates that non-English-speaking mothers, particularly Spanish-only speakers, experience worse maternal health outcomes compared to their mainstream counterparts. Language barriers often hinder communication and negatively affect perinatal care. This study used data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System from Florida (2019–2020) to examine associations between health insurance, income, and perinatal outcomes among Spanish and English-speaking women. Krieger’s eco-social theory guided this cross-sectional, quantitative analysis. Chi-square tests were used for bivariable analysis, and multivariable models were used to adjust for confounders. Results showed that native language alone significantly predicted specific outcomes such as large-for-gestational-age …

Operation And Termination Of Sunset Clauses In Bilateral Investment Treaties, Claudia Annacker Dr. Feb 2025

Operation And Termination Of Sunset Clauses In Bilateral Investment Treaties, Claudia Annacker Dr.

National Law School Business Law Review

Sunset clauses in bilateral investment treaties (“BITs”) extend treaty protections for investments made prior to a BIT’s termination for a certain period thereafter. Although almost all BITs contain sunset clauses, their operation and termination remain unexplored in several respects. Sunset clauses have recently been put into the spotlight as a number of States, including, for example, India, Indonesia, Australia, and the Member States of the European Union, have terminated or renegotiated numerous BITs in the context of the investment treaty reform process. While it is relatively uncontroversial that sunset clauses apply when a contracting State unilaterally terminates a BIT, the …

Organic Websites: Certification Of Ai-Generated Or Human-Written Content On The Internet, Andrew W. Torrance, Bill Tomlinson Feb 2025

Organic Websites: Certification Of Ai-Generated Or Human-Written Content On The Internet, Andrew W. Torrance, Bill Tomlinson

Chicago-Kent Journal of Intellectual Property

This paper proposes the development of a certification system analogous to the standards used in organic food labeling, designed to distinguish websites based on the proportion of human-written versus AI-generated content. In an era where AI plays an increasingly prominent role in content creation, this system would provide transparency for consumers and uphold fair competition in digital markets. The certification would allow website creators to present verifiable evidence of their content’s provenance, ranging from entirely human-made, to a mix of human and AI contributions, to fully AI-generated content. Additionally, this paper explores the legal and policy frameworks necessary for implementing …

Evidence-Based Teaching Interventions For Emergent Multilingual Students In High School Science Classrooms: A Literature Review, Uma Ganesan

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

As student populations in the United States grow increasingly linguistically and culturally diverse, asset-oriented pedagogical approaches become essential for leveraging the linguistic talents of multilingual students in science education. This literature review explores evidence-based instructional interventions supporting emergent multilingual learners in deeply engaging with scientific practices and communication in high school science classrooms. The review examined nine peer-reviewed studies published between 2012 and 2023, focusing on instructional strategies for multilingual learners in secondary science education. Findings reveal promising interventions such as the 5E instructional model, think-pair-share discussions, translanguaging techniques, and culturally responsive pedagogy. These approaches, grounded in sociocultural theory and …

Shalom: A Judeo-Christian Response To Greed, Kwok Tung Cheung Feb 2025

Shalom: A Judeo-Christian Response To Greed, Kwok Tung Cheung

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

In my recent conceptual analysis of greed, I argue that there are three different conceptual aspects, namely, a consuming desire to acquire more and more (the psychological), an inordinate love for material possession and power (the metaphysical), and an action of acquiring more than one’s share by taking what belongs to one’s fellow citizens, essentially with a calculating indifference toward others (the socio-historical). The aim of that analysis, as a foundational work, is to make sense of the vice or the moral mistake of greed in the contemporary world, especially by reviving the socio-historical aspect which is about justice. Building …

Politicians can harness social media to influence public perception and shape narratives about current events. Twitter is a social media site that many users engage with for information-seeking purposes. This study investigates how language style and source type influences media viewers’ perceptions on Twitter. In an experiment, participants were presented with tweets that varied by the formality of language used and the type of account used varied by political or personal accounts. Findings suggest a difference in source credibility judgments on the account type and language style used. Specifically, participants viewed formal language and professional accounts as more competent, while …

The Dirty Work Of Faith-Washing In A Faith-Friendly Business, Cathy Driscoll Feb 2025

The Dirty Work Of Faith-Washing In A Faith-Friendly Business, Cathy Driscoll

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

Drawing on faith/spirituality at work and organizational legitimacy literatures, a case study of a large global meat company is used to deconstruct the concept of faith-friendly business and explore how faith-washing can provide a business with legitimacy and potentially distract stakeholders from irresponsible activities. In particular, I focus on the faith-friendly communications and initiatives in relation to treatment of non-salaried employees as a primary stakeholder of the company. I highlight a disconnect from religious social thought on meaningful and dignified work and many of the concepts found in the modern faith/spirituality at work literature, as well as societal expectations on …

Quantifying The Role Of Active Listening And Reassurance In Virtual Health Coach Interactions, Ghulam Hussain, Brian Keegan, Robert Ross Feb 2025

Quantifying The Role Of Active Listening And Reassurance In Virtual Health Coach Interactions, Ghulam Hussain, Brian Keegan, Robert Ross

Articles

Conversational Agents have the potential to support healthcare through coaching exercise routines, but are still lacking in demonstrating authentic social behaviours to support engagement. To this end, we present a series of experiments that we conducted in order to investigate how automated health care coaches can be more effective when their interaction style is tailored to demonstrate qualities associated with a good bedside manner, namely active listening and reassurance. To test this, we first developed a dataset of 135 dialogue excerpts from three distinct sources, i.e., original, handcrafted and LLMs, the latter two of which were tuned to demonstrate specific …

Navigating Trauma: A Linguistic Exploration Of Bilingual Trauma Expressions, Amira Mahmoud Othman Feb 2025

Navigating Trauma: A Linguistic Exploration Of Bilingual Trauma Expressions, Amira Mahmoud Othman

Theses and Dissertations

This study explores the relationship between language, trauma, and emotional expression among bilingual Arabic-English speakers, focusing on code-switching patterns and euphemisms, and more broadly the emotional roles of native and non-native languages in trauma narratives. Through qualitative interviews with 20 Egyptian participants, the research reveals that code-switching serves as both a linguistic and emotional tool, allowing speakers to navigate trauma by creating distance or engaging more intimately. Such codeswitching patterns include the integration of English content words within Arabic structures, morphosyntactic innovations, and gender agreement applications, reflecting the creative adaptability of bilingual speakers in emotionally charged contexts, in line with …

Enhancing Online Toxicity Detection On Gaming Networks: A Novel Embeddings-Based Valence Lexicon Approach, Heba Ismail, Ashraf Khalil, Ahmed Jasmy Feb 2025

Enhancing Online Toxicity Detection On Gaming Networks: A Novel Embeddings-Based Valence Lexicon Approach, Heba Ismail, Ashraf Khalil, Ahmed Jasmy

All Works

Online toxicity and violent speech on gaming networks pose significant threats to societal well-being, particularly among adolescents, and are linked to severe consequences such as suicide. This highlights an urgent need for effective toxicity detection methods tailored to these platforms. Traditional rule-based approaches are inherently limited, and the performance of predictive models in detecting online toxicity is critically dependent on the quality and representativeness of their training data. However, the distinct linguistic characteristics of discourse on gaming networks present unique challenges in curating representative training samples using existing valence lexicons, often resulting in suboptimal detection accuracy. In this study, we …

Cultural Influences On Parental Advocacy For Inclusion: Experiences Of South Asian Families With Children With Extensive Support Needs, Sudha Krishnan

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This qualitative study examined the cultural factors in parental advocacy in South Asian parents of children with extensive support needs (ESN), concerning the educational placement decisions for their children. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic coding. The findings revealed that the predominant preference for segregated educational settings among participants was shaped by various cultural influences: persistent social stigma surrounding disability, a culturally-rooted belief in the curability of the disability, the prioritization of safety over academic integration, perceived inadequacies within general education settings, institutional pressures from school or IEP recommendations, advocacy for intensive home-based instruction, and a …

“I Remember It...I Feel It” Place’S Intangible Identity: Explorations Through The Lens Of Micro-Phenomenology- Case Study Of Al-Sultan Hassan Complex, Sarah Mohamed El Zoheiry

Theses and Dissertations

In today’s contemporary architecture, the growing of anonymous and interchangeable spaces has diminished the distinctive character of the place, its individuality and experiential signification, fostering placelessness. This research argues that the framework of reconsidering place’s atmosphere offers a pathway to reconnect people with places through emotional, sensory, and embodied encounters. This research investigates the phenomenology of place, focusing on the atmosphere as an intangible identity that transcends physical attributes and engages people's senses and feelings. By exploring the Al-Sultan Hassan complex, the study deepens the understanding of the transcendental quality of the atmosphere, it’s unfolding over time, and it’s associated …
