Amish Shwitzer: An Old Order Contact Language, Anja Hasse, Guido Seiler Jan 2025

Amish Shwitzer: An Old Order Contact Language, Anja Hasse, Guido Seiler

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

There is relatively little linguistic research on the language spoken by the Swiss Amish community of Adams County, IN. The language is remarkable for various reasons. First, it is a kind of a mixed language with closely related parental languages which has so far not been found elsewhere in the languages of the world. Second, it is an example of a complex linguistic inner-Amish separation. While the convergence of Amish Shwitzer towards Pennsylvania Dutch grammar is caused by intense contact between Swiss and Pennsylvania Dutch-speaking Amish, the retention of Bernese German features inherited by the ancestors of the modern-day Swiss …

Using Spatial Network Analysis To Explore Migration Of Extended Families In Historical Research, Rock Miller Jan 2025

Using Spatial Network Analysis To Explore Migration Of Extended Families In Historical Research, Rock Miller

Theses and Dissertations

This project proposes a geoinformatics approach for understanding the migration of extended families in historical contexts. It uses full-count longitudinal census data (developed by the Minnesota Population Center) and graph methods to define multi-generational extended family relationships and to model the locational structures of these families as a spatial network. Graph algorithms and mapping methods are used to interrogate these structures as reflections of the patterns of family outmigration and extension over time. The study is based on a set of extended families resident in a 15-county study area in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky in 1870, and their evolution …

Identity And Object: The Material And Cultural Exchanges Of Northwest Indian Mercantile Communities In The Seventeenth Century, Erum Khan Hadi Jan 2025

Identity And Object: The Material And Cultural Exchanges Of Northwest Indian Mercantile Communities In The Seventeenth Century, Erum Khan Hadi

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation proposes a world-historical approach to Northwestern Indian cultural exchanges in the seventeenth century, focusing on the impact of trade and migrations in the Indian Ocean World (IOW) on the identity of mercantile communities in the region. There is a lack of research on the cultural history of these Northwestern Indian communities, which were prominent in the seventeenth-century commercial IOW. The current gap between economic and cultural histories can be addressed through research that analyzes commodities as symbols of culture and identity. The study aims to translate the cultural history of Northwestern Indian communities through material culture via objects …

Ms Environmental Biology Capstone Project, Erin Pierce

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Wildfires can directly and indirectly alter freshwater aquatic ecosystems and their resident biota. A wide range of effects is possible depending on the characteristics of the fire, ecosystem, and species. As wildfires become more frequent and intense, specifically in the western United States, understanding the mechanisms that alter biological integrity and species diversity measures is increasingly important. Our study investigated the effects of the Marshall Fire on fish and macroinvertebrate assemblages and their in-stream and riparian habitat. We hypothesized that, because of the high intensity of the fire, riparian-zone burning, and the large burn area in the drainage basin, we …

Kettlebell Swings As A Conditioning Activity On Standing Power Throw: Exploring Post-Activation Performance Enhancement In Rotc Cadets, Knik Durman Jan 2025

Kettlebell Swings As A Conditioning Activity On Standing Power Throw: Exploring Post-Activation Performance Enhancement In Rotc Cadets, Knik Durman

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) is a neuromuscular phenomenon where high-intensity conditioning activities (CA) temporarily improve explosive performance. While resistance and ballistic exercises are well-studied for PAPE, the effectiveness of kettlebell swings (KBS) in enhancing Standing Power Throw (SPT) performance remains unclear. Given the SPT’s role in the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT), identifying effective PAPE strategies could improve ACFT scores. Using a randomized crossover design, this study examined whether KBS before the SPT enhanced throw distance in 19 ROTC cadets (male: n = 17, female: n = 2). Participants completed two conditions: (1) KBS (two sets of five reps with …

Has Spain Recovered From The 2008-2009 European Financial Crisis?, Blake H. Rogers Jan 2025

Has Spain Recovered From The 2008-2009 European Financial Crisis?, Blake H. Rogers

CISLA Senior Integrative Projects

The 2008-2009 Financial Crisis, which originated in the United States, shocked global markets. Being incredibly linked to the United States' markets, European markets like Spain felt the effects first. However, their build-up to the crisis was unique to the United States, its fellow European Union members, and the PIIGS nations. The PIIGS nations, comprising Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece, and Spain, were a collection of primarily Southern European economies whose accession into the European Union led to unchecked borrowing at previously unheard-of interest rates. These rates created a massive cycle of borrowing to invest but ceased as the crisis halted all …

The Effect Of Biochar As Partial Cement Replacement On Mechanical, Durability, Thermal, And Microstructural Properties Of Concrete - Comparison With Biomass, Aysha Yousef Alsaadi Jan 2025

The Effect Of Biochar As Partial Cement Replacement On Mechanical, Durability, Thermal, And Microstructural Properties Of Concrete - Comparison With Biomass, Aysha Yousef Alsaadi

Theses

This thesis paper examines the use of 1% cement replacement with date palm derived biochar and compares it to 1% replacement of biomass. The main aim of this idea is to reduce the carbon emissions from concrete production factories and utilize the abundant waste from date palm plants, which is prevalent in the UAE. Three samples of concrete were used: 1% biochar mix, 1% biomass mix, and a control mix. Mechanical tests, including compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths, were evaluated. Thermal conductivity, chloride penetration, water absorption, and characterization testing by XRD, TGA, SEM, and FTIR were conducted. As for compressive …

The Meaning Of Life, In Michigan: Mercy From Life Sentences Under The State Constitution, Molly Bernstein, David Shapiro Jan 2025

The Meaning Of Life, In Michigan: Mercy From Life Sentences Under The State Constitution, Molly Bernstein, David Shapiro

JCLC Online

Properly understood, the “cruel or unusual” punishment clause of the Michigan Constitution grants every person sentenced to life in prison a meaningful right to obtain release through rehabilitation. Today, however, Michigan has among the nation’s largest populations of people serving both formal and de facto life sentences without any meaningful possibility of release.

In 1850, Michigan revised its state constitution to prohibit “cruel or unusual punishment,” creating a contrast with the conjunctive “cruel and unusual punishments” clause of the federal Eighth Amendment. This disjunctive prohibition, which subsequent Michigan constitutional conventions retained, prohibits both “cruel” sentences and “unusual” sentences. We argue …

Looking Again At The Anthon Transcript(S), John S. Thompson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The official account of Martin Harris’s visit to Charles Anthon, canonized in the Pearl of Great Price, suggests that Anthon may have been shown more than one transcript by Harris. The differing responses of Anthon to each of these transcripts may shed light on the kinds of characters he was shown and provide additional perspectives that can help clarify a little more what is happening in the historical sources.

Otto Von Bismarck: Foundation And Downfall Of The German Empire, Pablo Sarmiento

Theses & ETDs

In this thesis I will present the achievements of German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. However, I am also presenting the faults in Bismarck's domestic and foreign policy. Through my research, I will display how the chancellor influenced German politics starting from his appointment to power in 1862 up until his removal from power in 1890. In the final section of this paper, I will analyze the legacy of Bismarck's strategies and the impact those have on German leadership throughout the Wilhelmine period. Overall I am portraying how the tactics Otto von Bismarck used had allowed him to create Germany but …

It offers new directions for the study of material entanglement in social relationships by reviewing the history of material culture studies in the Appalachian context, fundamental theoretical propositions emerging from the “material turn” in social theory, and examples drawn from ethnographic and archaeological research into the patterns of use of material culture in the timber country of West Virginia and coalfields of eastern Kentucky. Finally, this introduction …

Musical Chairs: Vertical Antitrust Should Prevail Over Congressional Payola Prohibitions To Protect Musicians, Maria Stevenson Jan 2025

Musical Chairs: Vertical Antitrust Should Prevail Over Congressional Payola Prohibitions To Protect Musicians, Maria Stevenson

The University of Chicago Business Law Review

The music industry is highly concentrated at multiple stages along the production chain between the Big Three music group conglomerates (Universal, Sony, and Warner) and the three largest streaming services (Spotify, Apple, and YouTube). The Big Three and the streaming services have extensive vertical arrangements, from the Big Three having ownership stakes in the largest streaming services to their contracts for the streaming services’ algorithms to prioritize Big Three artists. This resembles historical radio era payola arrangements. This double layer of market concentration and the arrangements between music production and distribution primarily harm musicians, who lack the bargaining power to …

In Depth Analytics Of Vehicle-Vehicle And Vehicle-Pedestrian Conflicts Across Various Conditions, Qianqian Jin Jan 2025

In Depth Analytics Of Vehicle-Vehicle And Vehicle-Pedestrian Conflicts Across Various Conditions, Qianqian Jin

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024

This study explores key traffic safety challenges by analyzing threshold discrepancies in rear-end conflicts under different weather conditions, conflict likelihood and severity at interconnected intersections, and interaction patterns between right-turning vehicles and pedestrians at signalized intersections. First, using CitySim trajectory data, the study examines the impact of weather conditions on surrogate safety measure (SSMs) thresholds for Modified Time to Collision (MTTC), Deceleration Rate to Avoid a Crash (DRAC), and Single-step Probabilistic Driving Risk Field (S-PDRF). Results indicate that MTTC and DRAC thresholds vary significantly under clear (2.3s v.s 3.0 m/s²) and rainy (4s v.s. 2.4 m/s²) conditions, whereas S-PDRF remains …

The Salvation Of The Unevangelized: A Comparative Analysis Of The Views Of Clark H. Pinnock And Millard J. Erickson, Christopher R. Mwashinga Jan 2025

The Salvation Of The Unevangelized: A Comparative Analysis Of The Views Of Clark H. Pinnock And Millard J. Erickson, Christopher R. Mwashinga

Dissertations

Problem and Purpose

This dissertation addresses the problem of the ongoing disagreement among evangelical theologians, as represented by Clark H. Pinnock and Millard J. Erickson, concerning the issue of the salvation of the unevangelized. This disagreement continued even though both scholars focused on special revelation and general revelation as sources for information leading people to receive salvation. This approach failed to resolve the disagreement even after decades of heated theological debates indicating a need for a different approach to this soteriological problem. While other researchers have documented Pinnock’s and Erickson’s views on the salvation of the unevangelized, their motivations and …

Theses and Dissertations

This research examines the multifaceted life of Colonel John Banister (1734–1788) during the eighteenth century. Using a biographical methodology, the study highlights his significance as an American founder from Virginia. It provides a chronological account of his accomplishments and a detailed analysis of his complex character as a politician, slave owner, and public figure of cultural importance. The research draws on primary sources such as letters and official records, as well as secondary sources including biographies and historiographies that have received limited attention. The thesis argues that Banister’s role as a Revolutionary leader and American founder is underrepresented in current …

Out Of The Circle: Exploring Religious Ostracism In Cyberball, Ralph D. Stewart Iii Jan 2025

Out Of The Circle: Exploring Religious Ostracism In Cyberball, Ralph D. Stewart Iii

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychological effects of social ostracism in group settings, particularly in relation to social identity theory (Tajfel & Turner, 1979) and the need to belong (Baumeister & Leary, 1995). Collective self-esteem, hostility, and belonging were examined to see if they changed significantly with the implementation of ostracism through the Cyberball paradigm (Williams, 2000). The relationship between ostracism, hostility, and religious fundamentalism was also explored. Though insignificant results from subsequent analysis were obtained, these results suggest weaker ostracism effects for interpersonal measures rather than intrapersonal measures consistent with findings by Hartgerink et al. …
