Legal Barriers To Maternal Healthcare Equity, Ashley Keith
Legal Barriers To Maternal Healthcare Equity, Ashley Keith
Akron Law Faculty Publications
In examining contemporary maternal healthcare inequity in clinical care delivery, we must study the critical role played by the legal institutions in creating and perpetuating this problem. Comprehensive systems within the United States require legal advocacy and judicial enforcement to take shape and maintain their structural integrity. Healthcare in this country is no different. Legal institutions helped form and further, both intentionally and inadvertently, the racial disparities that we currently battle. Legal history plays an integral role in understanding why racial disparities in maternal mortality persist. One way for legal professionals to contribute to the ongoing efforts to achieve maternal …
Detecting Fake News Using Ai, Gustavo Lambert, Ignatio Varela
Detecting Fake News Using Ai, Gustavo Lambert, Ignatio Varela
ICT
This project investigates how Artificial Intelligence (AI), specifically supervised machine learning techniques, can be applied to detect and classify fake news with high accuracy. The motivation stems from the widespread dissemination of misinformation on social media, where false narratives often spread faster than verified content. To address this issue, two distinct classification models were implemented and evaluated: one combining TF-IDF vectorization with Random Forest classifier, and another using TF-IDF with Logistic Regression. The TF-IDF technique was used to convert raw textual data into meaningful numerical features, capturing word frequency and relevance within the corpus. Both models were trained and tested …

Big Data Vs Big Law: The Impact Of Big Data And Machine Learning In Anonymising Or Synthesizing Data For Use Across Borders., Kenneth Darker
ICT
This research investigates the viability of anonymization and synthetic data generation in the area of big data so that the data could be shared across borders and exist outside the constraints of privacy laws. These privacy laws are growing around the world to help protect individual identity and prevent open sharing of private data. These privacy laws all provide guidance on how data may be shared and the strict conditions upon how that may occur. Two methods which are growing in popularity are anonymization of data, specifically k-Anonymity, l-Diversity and t-Closeness, and generating synthetic data from a real dataset leveraging …

Work And Human Vocation In Catholic Social Teaching, Stefan M. Mcdaniel
Work And Human Vocation In Catholic Social Teaching, Stefan M. Mcdaniel
Journal Articles
From the Article
This essay explores Catholic social teaching on work, focusing on how labor should enable humans to fulfill their vocation through experiences of dominion and communion. Drawing from papal encyclicals and theological anthropology, it examines how work becomes a means for humans to exercise their God-like faculties by intelligently shaping creation (dominion) and building rich relationships (communion). The essay argues that Catholic teaching offers distinctive contributions to contemporary workplace justice movements through its emphasis on two priorities: promoting worker-ownership and supporting family life. Worker-ownership, especially through cooperatives, enables labor to become an exercise of dominion, while family-centered policies …
Contract Or Prison, Sadie Blanchard
Contract Or Prison, Sadie Blanchard
Journal Articles
Critics of the criminal enforcement system have condemned the expansion and privatization of electronic monitoring, criminal diversion, parole, and probation. But the astonishing perversion of contract involved in these new practices has gone unnoticed. Governments are turning to “offender-funded” programs that empower firms to contract with people who are suspected of or have been convicted of crimes— and whose alternative to agreeing to these contracts is prosecution or incarceration. Though incarceration-alternative (IA) contracting is sometimes framed as humane, historical and current context illuminates its coercive nature. IA contracting must be examined under classical contract theory and in light of the …
The Purpose Of The Preliminary Injunction, Samuel Bray
The Purpose Of The Preliminary Injunction, Samuel Bray
Journal Articles
This Article explores a reshaping of the preliminary injunction that is occurring in the federal courts. A preliminary injunction is designed to be a "hold in place" order, blocking actions by the parties that would undermine the efficacy of the court's remedial options. But the preliminary injunction is becoming a device for accelerating the merits decision. Instead of a four-factor test for preliminary relief, increasingly there is one factor: the merits. This Article critiques this transformation, and it argues that the preliminary injunction should be recentered on the protection of the court's remedial options.

Can The Sec Mandate Disclosures That Contain Both Financial And Social Information? The Case Of The Human Capital Management Disclosures, Patrick M. Corrigan
Journal Articles
Human capital contributes directly to the top and bottom line of corporate financial performance. However, theory predicts, and empirical studies suggest, that firms underinvest in human capital because of a classic public goods problem: since employees can always leave to work for another employer, firms cannot expect to bear all the fruits of investments they make in human capital. As human capital becomes more important in the modern service and technology economy, the ills of this public good problem are growing and the deficiencies of underinvestment becoming more apparent. This Article studies the potential role of human capital management disclosures. …

With the rapid growth of technology, accessing digital health records has become increasingly easier. Especially mobile health technology like mHealth apps help users to manage their health information, as well as store, share and access medical records and treatment information. Along with this huge advancement, mHealth apps are increasingly at risk of exposing protected health information (PHI) when security measures are not adequately implemented. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) ensures the secure handling of PHI, and mHealth applications are required to comply with its standards. But it is unfortunate to note that many mobile and mHealth app …

Peripheral T cell lymphoma (PTCL) is a heterogeneous group of postthymic T cell neoplasms, with ~40% classified as PTCL-not otherwise specified (PTCL-NOS). PTCL-GATA3, a molecularly defined subtype, associated with T helper 2 (TH2)-like differentiation and poor prognosis, has frequent co-occurrence of TP53 loss/mutation and heterozygous PTEN loss. CD4+ T cell conditional mouse models with Trp53 mutation/deletion and Pten loss demonstrated mature T cell lymphomas (mTCLs) with TH2-like transcriptomic and immunophenotypic profiles. Molecular studies revealed that codeletion of Trp53/Pten induced T cell receptor and Janus kinase-signal transducer and activator of transcription signaling, promoting TH2 differentiation …

Journal Articles: Anesthesiology
Most current information about neurological disorders and diseases is derived from direct patient and animal studies. However, patient studies in many cases do not allow replication of the early stages of the disease and, therefore, offer limited opportunities to understand disease progression. On the other hand, although the use of animal models allows us to study the mechanisms of the disease, they present significant limitations in developing drugs for humans. Recently, 3D-cultured in vitro models derived from human pluripotent stem cells have surfaced as a promising system. They offer the potential to connect findings from patient studies with those from …

Tumors shift their metabolic needs to enable uncontrolled proliferation. Therefore, metabolic assessment of cancer patient sera provides a significant opportunity to noninvasively monitor disease progression and enable mechanistic understanding of the pathways that lead to response. Here, we show Raman spectroscopy (RS), a highly sensitive and label-free analytical tool, is effective in metabolic profiling across diverse cancer types in patient sera from both pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). We also combine metabolic data with proteomic signatures to predict treatment response. Our data show RS peaks successfully differentiate PDAC patients from healthy controls. Peaks associated with …

Pancreatic cancer (PC) exhibits profound metabolic adaptations that support tumor progression, survival, and therapy resistance. Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) is a key regulator of these processes, promoting metabolic reprogramming and chemoresistance. Given that mitochondrial metabolites modulate HIF-1α stability, targeting mitochondrial metabolism offers a promising therapeutic strategy. Niclosamide (Nic), a clinically approved anthelmintic, disrupts mitochondrial function but is limited by poor bioavailability. To overcome this, we developed polyanhydride-based Nic nanoparticles (NicNps) to enhance bioavailability and efficacy. NicNps impaired mitochondrial function, suppressed metabolism, downregulated HIF-1α, and inhibited growth of PC cells and orthotopic gemcitabine (Gem)-resistant mouse tumor models. Notably, NicNps combined with Gem …
