Predicting Federal Third-Party Funding Regulation, Victoria Sahani
Predicting Federal Third-Party Funding Regulation, Victoria Sahani
Faculty Scholarship
Third-party funding is a global phenomenon, although regulatory enforcement is local. Regulatory approaches vary widely from country to country and within countries, especially in federal legal systems, such as Canada, Australia, and the United States. The United States federal government is learning about third-party funding with an eye toward potential future regulation. Congress has been investigating funding, as evidenced by testimony in congressional hearings, proposed federal legislation, and a nonpartisan study on third-party funding by the Government Accountability Office. In addition, after more than a decade of observation, the United States Federal Civil Rules Advisory Committee recently formed a committee …

The idea of work, as it pertains to a place called home, as distinct from the market, has engaged and perplexed scholars for generations. Work in the home raises complicated issues that have accordingly drawn the focus of generations of scholars, from Charlotte Perkins Gilman and the material feminists of the late nineteenth century1 to historians of labor such as Eileen Boris2 and of law like Reva Siegel,3 from legal scholars like Fran Olson, Dorothy Roberts, and Robert Ellickson4 to social theorists like Friedrick Engels5 and architectural historians like Dolores Hayden,6 to name just …
Judicial Accountability, Anya Bernstein
Judicial Accountability, Anya Bernstein
Faculty Scholarship
Judicial decisions are moving ever more authority over regulatory statutes away from agencies and to courts instead. One justification offered for this power transfer: agencies lack the accountability of courts. This Article takes up that claim, assessing the institutions’ relative capacities for accountability in their authoritative interpretations of regulatory statutes—agency regulations and court rulings. I take accountability to involve actors undertaking reasoned decisionmaking grounded in publicly recognized values and facts and justifying their decisions to others who can evaluate, influence, or override those judgments. Accountability thus involves a give and take: it gives an account of government reasoning to a …
[Introduction To] Unbecoming Persons, Ladelle Mcwhorter
[Introduction To] Unbecoming Persons, Ladelle Mcwhorter
Bookshelf
A damning genealogy of modern personhood and a bold vision for a new ethics rooted in belonging rather than individuality.
In the face of ecological crisis, economic injustice, and political violence, the moral demands of being a good person are almost too much to bear. In Unbecoming Persons, Ladelle McWhorter argues that this strain is by design. Our ideas about personhood, she shows, emerged to sustain centuries of colonialism, slavery, and environmental destruction. We must look elsewhere to find our way out.
This history raises a hard question: Should we be persons at all, or might we live a …

Synthesising Cross-Speaker Data For Low-Resource Pathological Speech Recognition With Peft, Kesego Mokgosi, Milad Dadgar, Cathy Ennis, Robert Ross
Conference papers
Dysarthric speech recognition is essential for enhancing communication and accessibility for individuals with speech impairments, yet its development is hindered by a scarcity of robust, speaker-specific datasets. This study explores low-resource dysarthric speech recognition through cross-speaker transfer using synthetic data and parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT). We integrate SpeechT5 text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis with x-vector speaker embeddings to generate speaker-specific dysarthric speech, enabling model adaptation while preserving pathological speech characteristics such as prosodic irregularities. Experiments on the TORGO dataset show that mixed cross-synthetic data with LoRA fine-tuning achieves a WER of 0.17, representing a 71.7% improvement over the standard model (0.60 WER) without …
Decision-Making Supports And Cognitive Decline, Rebekah Diller
Decision-Making Supports And Cognitive Decline, Rebekah Diller
Articles
For persons with a range of cognitive disabilities, supported decision-making, rooted in a human rights approach to disability, has emerged as a tool that permits them to make legally binding decisions and avoid guardianship. As supported decision-making policy has evolved in the United States, state statutes have primarily focused on formal agreements through which individuals can designate trusted supporters to assist in obtaining information, processing that information, and communicating a decision. This Article argues that supported decision-making has promise for preserving the autonomy of persons living with dementia, but that the model of a supported decisionmaking agreement embodied in the …
Doubting Thomas And Questioning Stare Decisis Under The Roberts Court, Wilfred U. Codrington Iii
Doubting Thomas And Questioning Stare Decisis Under The Roberts Court, Wilfred U. Codrington Iii
Articles
The article critically examines the erosion of stare decisis under the Roberts Court, highlighting concerns about the Supreme Court's increasing willingness to overturn established precedents. While acknowledging the importance of stare decisis in maintaining stability and equality, the author argues that its practical value is being undermined by ideological polarization and a departure from traditional legal reasoning. The article questions the Court's recent approach to precedent, particularly in cases like Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization and Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard, and critiques the conservative majority's aggressive use of judicial power.

The Influence Of Social Achievement Goals On Grit In Aviation Education, Austin T. Walden
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
Aviation students have multiple ways of persisting and persevering in their aviation education, and they do not learn in a vacuum. Their social goals may help explain why some aviation students show more grit than others in an aviation education environment. The study examined the relationship and predictive ability of social achievement goals (i.e., social development goal, social demonstration-approach goal, and social demonstration-avoid goal) to predict grit in an aviation education environment. The constructs of social achievement goals and grit have yet to be examined together in motivation research. This paper provides a new predictive model for using the two …
