From Attention To Action: Advancing Inclusivity In The Landscape Of Anatomy Education, Siobhan M. Moyes, Lily Evans, Katie Snow, Aiden Jayanth Jan 2025

From Attention To Action: Advancing Inclusivity In The Landscape Of Anatomy Education, Siobhan M. Moyes, Lily Evans, Katie Snow, Aiden Jayanth

Peninsula Medical School

Conversations about inclusivity in anatomy education are at a critical juncture. While the need for a more equitable discipline is widely recognised, significant challenges remain. As this project aimed to reimagine what a truly inclusive learning experience could like and how it might be best achieved, an inclusive approach to research methodology was essential to ensure robust and representative results. Due to the paucity in anatomical literature on this topic, the authors applied concepts from sociological research methodology and innovative methods of demographic data collection to their own discipline.

The study utilised questionnaires and focus groups to collect diverse data …

Rethinking Trust In The Refugee Resettlement Process: How Service Providers Can Enable Refugee Agency Through Diasporic Connections, Mahfoudha Sidelemine, Emily D. Campion Jan 2025

Rethinking Trust In The Refugee Resettlement Process: How Service Providers Can Enable Refugee Agency Through Diasporic Connections, Mahfoudha Sidelemine, Emily D. Campion

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

Current guidance for refugee resettlement agency workers encourages the simultaneous pursuit of trust-building and administrative tasks (e.g., housing, transportation and employment). This dual goal is resource-intensive, and focusing on the former may come at a cost to the latter. The purpose of the current research is to challenge the importance of trust-building by resettlement agencies. Drawing from our qualitative data from in-depth interviews with resettled refugees (N = 20) and agency workers (N = 15), we adopt a grounded theory approach and find that the burden of responsibility for both caregiving and administrative responsibilities can overtax agency workers …

Working With Similarities And Differences: Relational Processes In Transdisciplinary Qualitative Research With Diverse Teams, Michael S. Dao, Soma De Bourbon, Melissa Mcclure Fuller, Miranda Worthen

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Transdisciplinary research and research teams are becoming increasingly valued in academic spaces. The potential of transdisciplinary research is that the diversity of thought and experience can create robust research processes from project inception, methodological protocol, data collection, data analysis and reporting output. Yet, transdisciplinary research teams can also bring about complications pertaining to conflicting epistemological perspectives, areas of expertise, and objectives for applied impact. In noting the benefits and downsides of transdisciplinary research, this article aims to detail how a transdisciplinary research team navigated a qualitative and participatory longitudinal research project. Drawing from a larger community-based participatory research project, the …

Background: In available comparative studies, Dutch transgender youth have consistently shown better psychosocial well-being compared to those in other countries. Therefore, the Netherlands (N.L.) could be considered a gold-standard—though imperfect—comparator for transgender youth research. The United States (U.S.) is heterogeneous in its policies and practices impacting transgender youth, and policies are in flux. This study examines similarities and differences between U.S. and Dutch policies, practices, and contexts relevant to the well-being of transgender adolescents. Methods: A three-stage Delphi procedure was conducted with expert panels in the N.L. and U.S. Results: This process identified candidate mechanisms driving differences in outcomes for …

Imperfect Access: Structural Barriers And External Threats To Preventive Care, Dorit Rubenstein Reiss, Richard H. Hughes Iv Jan 2025

Imperfect Access: Structural Barriers And External Threats To Preventive Care, Dorit Rubenstein Reiss, Richard H. Hughes Iv

Faculty Scholarship

Access to healthcare in the United States is often partial and inequitable. This is due in large part to a highly fragmented public-private system of providing health insurance coverage to its citizens. Yet, through incremental policy developments, the United States provides more comprehensive preventive care coverage across both public and private sources of coverage than in other areas of healthcare. Moreover, it has developed safety net programs intended to gap-fill access for those without insurance coverage. This is not surprising; like other countries, the United States realize that in addition to being just and equitable, broader access to prevention has …

Resilience Practices In Health Science And Medical Libraries During The Early Stages Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Justin F. Gaynor Jan 2025

Resilience Practices In Health Science And Medical Libraries During The Early Stages Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Justin F. Gaynor

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This paper uses the concept of resilience engineering as an organizing principle to discuss best practices that evolved within health science/medical libraries in the United States during COVID-19 crisis, focusing on the period March–August 2020. Protection of library staff, assistance to medical staff, reducing the circulation of misinformation and public health consumerism all required substantial changes to standard processes. These process changes had to arise in the context of both physical isolation and information overload. Some practices became widespread due to their utility, and these are the focus of this report.

A paradigm shift is afoot at major federal consumer protection agencies. For four decades, a bipartisan bloc of bureaucrats has seen the purpose of consumer protection as promoting informed consumer choice or "consumer sovereignty." The idea was that informed consumers in competitive markets would protect themselves by choosing among sellers. Ensuring access to information would then shore up markets' self-correcting tendencies without requiring moral judgment. In the past few years, by contrast, regulators have prioritized sector-wide regulation, enforcement sweeps, and strategic cases against market leaders. They have justified their actions not ( exclusively) in terms of informed choice or efficiency …

Impact Of Color, Shape, And Typeface On Visual Attention: An Eye Tracking Study On Brand Logo, Suzayana Rosidah, Fransiskus Xaverius Ivan, Suatmi Murnani, Hafzatin Nurlatifa, Kristian Adi Nugraha, Sunu Wibirama

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

In numerous cases, companies undertake logo redesigns to enhance brand perception. However, little attention has been paid to the impact of each element of the redesigned logo on visual attention and brand perception. To address this research gap, we collected data from eye tracking and self-report questionnaires of 30 participants during exposure to the old and new logos of a prominent bookstore in Indonesia. The results of the questionnaires revealed a significant relationship between the responses concerning color, shape, typeface, and those pertaining to visual attention (p < 0.05). Most participants were able to grasp the value of creativity, flexibility, progress, change, and strength in the new logo shape. The results of eye tracking show that color was the most influential factor that attracted visual attention in old (F(1.5, 43.4) = 14.905, p < 0.05) and new logos (F(1.7, 50) = 34.757, p < 0.05). This study suggests that companies should selectively choose a color scheme of a logo that better attracts the attention of consumers. In addition, our finding is promising as a practical guide for similar research, as well as a case study on how logo redesign affects brand perception and visual attention.

Regulation Of Haemodynamic Variables By Laguerre Polynomials Based Model Predictive Control., Sai Sandeep Boda, Hiren Kumar G. Patel, Khyati D. Mistry

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

Purpose: Cardiac output (CO) and Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) are two haemodynamic variables that need regulation in clinical situations, particularly in post-cardiac surgery patients. As it is difficult for clinical personnel to monitor continuously, automatic drug infusion to regulate MAP and CO is recommended and essential in the medical environment. Methods: Two input and two output patient model was used in this work to study the variation of haemodynamic variables in response to the infusion of Dopamine (DP) and Sodium Nitroprusside (SNP) drugs. Model predictive control (MPC) algorithm was exercised here as it was a well-established technique to regulate output …

From Theory To Practice: Simulating Zero Trust Architecture With Python For Cybersecurity, Pankaj R. Chandre, Bhagyashree D. Shendkar, Sulochana Sagar Madachane, Nikita Kulkarni, Sayalee Deshmukh

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

The increasing complexity and frequency of cyber threats have necessitated the adoption of advanced security models, such as Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA). ZTA runs on the tenet that no entity whether inside or outside the network should be trusted by default, in contrast to conventional perimeter-based security solutions. This paper describes a thorough method for simulating and implementing Zero Trust Architecture in Python. We examine the essential elements and procedures of ZTA, such as identity verification, access control, and continuous monitoring, through a thorough analysis and step-by-step manual. The simulation shows how ZTA works to ensure strong network security and …

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

A multi-label pattern classification system tries to predict the set of class labels of a test example by learning from the training examples with the relevant label sets. Classification that involve datasets having multiple labels found immense of applications in pattern analysis tasks involving image, music and video. A test sample can be labeled to indicate different objects, people, music categories or concepts. Classification problems involving data having multiple labels, have to consider training dataset associated with variety of labels. Multi-label extensions of popular algorithms, kNN and Support Vector Machine (SVM) called Multi-label kNN (ML-kNN) and Ranking-SVM are commonly used …
