The "Not Seen" Effect Of International Financial Centers: Innovation In The Global Financial Ecosystem, Charlotte Ku, Andrew P. Morriss
The "Not Seen" Effect Of International Financial Centers: Innovation In The Global Financial Ecosystem, Charlotte Ku, Andrew P. Morriss
South Carolina Journal of International Law and Business
International Financial Centers (IFCs) are hubs of legal and financial innovation, developing specialized frameworks that facilitate cross-border investment, enhance global capital mobility, and support economic growth. Through jurisdictional competition, professional clustering, and adaptive regulatory frameworks, IFCs have pioneered legal structures that enable enterprises of all sizes to participate in the global economy. Using case studies of the International Business Company, the Limited Liability Company, the Protected Cell Company, and advances in trust law and applying the theoretical frameworks of social scientist Richard Florida and psychologist Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi, this article illustrates how IFCs serve as laboratories for financial experimentation, generating widely …
Evolutive Regime Assertion For The International Military Laws Of Outer Space: U.S. Legal Problems And Solutions Relating To The International Law Of Space Warfare, Matthew Lively
South Carolina Journal of International Law and Business
This article has three interrelated purposes. It 1) makes several novel contributions to and unite problematically disparate pieces of space law scholarship, 2) illustrates a disconnection between U.S. strategic space policies and the U.S. practice of military operations in outer space, 3) offers a new framework for international military space law, Evolutive Regime Assertion, that could remedy that connection and advance U.S. strategic interests while enhancing the safety of space operations for all the world. Evolutive Regime Assertion is mostly a prescriptive framework, but some of its elements are descriptive as well. In advancing the utility of the framework, this …
Navigating The Seas Of History In International Law, Valentina Vadi
Navigating The Seas Of History In International Law, Valentina Vadi
South Carolina Journal of International Law and Business
Inquiries into questions of time, history, and international law have recently come to the fore. So far, however, many studies have only examined developments in international law from a temporally and thematically fragmented, brief, and narrow perspective. Due to international law’s growing normative and institutional fragmentation and emphasis on specific crises, episodes, and events, many analyses focus on transient trends and particular facets of international law. This study suggests an alternative to these constrained viewpoints: a thorough, multilayered, and broad perspective to questions of international law, drawing on Fernand Braudel’s tripartite theory of time.
Braudel’s theory of time provides valuable …

Hazard Impact Assessment Of Brine Spills On Groundwater Pollution In Western North Dakota, Grace Dzifa Agbozo
Hazard Impact Assessment Of Brine Spills On Groundwater Pollution In Western North Dakota, Grace Dzifa Agbozo
Theses and Dissertations
The rapid expansion of oil and gas production in North Dakota’s Bakken Formation has heightened environmental concerns, particularly groundwater contamination from brine spills. Brine, a highly saline byproduct of oil extraction, poses a serious threat to water quality due to its chemical composition. This study examines brine spill impacts from 2013 to 2024 across Williams, Mountrail, McKenzie, and Dunn counties using GIS and the DRASTIC model, enhanced with Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Fuzzy Overlay techniques. Essential hydrogeological factors were analyzed to produce vulnerability index maps. Furthermore, spatial autocorrelation (Moran’s I), Optimized Hot Spot Analysis, and Emerging Hot Spot Analysis …
When Emotions Flare: Solar Rhythms, Emotions And Cycles Of Political Revolution, Andreas Hernandez, Carolina Zilli Vieira, Alexandra Smith, Rebecca Olson
When Emotions Flare: Solar Rhythms, Emotions And Cycles Of Political Revolution, Andreas Hernandez, Carolina Zilli Vieira, Alexandra Smith, Rebecca Olson
Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications
Revolutions are among the most transformative events in human history. Analyzing 395 revolutionary episodes from 1900 to 2014, we find that major waves cluster around solar maxima - periods of intensified geomagnetic activity. Drawing on biomedical research linking geomagnetic disturbances to cardiovascular and stress regulation, and thus to emotional states, we propose that solar cycles modulate the affective ecologies within which revolutions arise. Solar activity may accelerate, shape, and amplify revolutionary cycles by heightening emotional climates and tipping fragile systems toward mass mobilization. This reframes revolutions as planetary events - entanglements of political conflict, embodied emotion, and cosmic …
Backdoor Nepa Proceduralization: Less Environmental Substance Begets More Environmental Procedure, Cade Mallett
Backdoor Nepa Proceduralization: Less Environmental Substance Begets More Environmental Procedure, Cade Mallett
Natural Resources Journal
The National Environmental Policy Act (“NEPA”) tasks the government with fully analyzing the environmental consequences of the actions it plans to take before those actions can be performed. This procedural function of NEPA is much maligned by the development community for imposing paralyzingly high costs on government action. At the same time, the statute is disparaged by environmentalists as a toothless and ineffective tool which cannot compel the government to conform its actions to the environment’s best interests. So, which side is right? Arguably, both are. By interpreting NEPA to be a purely procedural statute, the Supreme Court’s holdings on …
Supporting English Language Learners In Agricultural Education: A Document Analysis, Ellie Chitwood
Supporting English Language Learners In Agricultural Education: A Document Analysis, Ellie Chitwood
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In Nebraska’s rural agricultural education classrooms, increasing numbers of students learn English as a second language, yet support tailored for these learners remains limited. This study explores how English Language Learner (ELL) resources are organized, accessed, and utilized within Nebraska’s agricultural education system. Drawing on Bandura’s Social Learning Theory and leadership education frameworks, a qualitative document analysis examined state policies, Educational Service Unit (ESU) supports, and professional development materials. Findings reveal a coherent statewide policy overshadowed by uneven regional implementation and limited agricultural contextualization. Despite resource disparities and technological constraints, agricultural educators demonstrate leadership by innovating bilingual supports and fostering …

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The Akan of Ghana have a proverb that translates, “When a thing is not placed in its rightful place, it will fall down,” and “Respect must be accorded to whom respect is due.” They also say, “The one behind walks in the footsteps of the one in front.” These Akan proverbs capture the literary journey encountered in the works of Chigozie Obioma, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and NoViolet Bulawayo in The Fishermen, Purple Hibiscus, and We Need New Names, respectively. Their narratives reflect an undeniable acknowledgment of the literary path cleared by one man often hailed as the …

Empirical Analysis Of Racial Disparities In Policing, Premkumar, Deepak, Lofstrom, Magnus, Hayes, Joseph, Martin, Brandon, Cremin, Sean
Santa Clara Law Review
Racial disparities within the criminal justice system continue to be a pressing issue, especially after the recent passage of California’s Racial Justice Act, which allows for a broader set of legal challenges based on racially disparate treatment. In this article, we analyze data for almost four million stops by California’s fifteen largest law enforcement agencies in 2019, examining the extent to which people of color experience searches, enforcement, intrusiveness, and use of force differently from white people. Black Californians are more likely to be searched than white Californians, but searches of Black civilians reveal less contraband and evidence. Black people …

From Campus To Career: Enhancing Career Support Services For Graduate International Students At The University Of Kentucky, Aku Fiagbeto, Ratwah Alhazmi
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
During the 2023–2024 academic year, the University of Kentucky enrolled a total of 1,285 international students, with 784 (61%) being graduate students. International students play a crucial role in enriching the university’s cultural and academic landscape. While UK has achieved record enrollment and improved student success rates, including a 66% graduation rate that places it among the top 100 public institutions in the U.S., it is important to consider whether these trends apply to international students as well. Retention and graduation rates for this demographic may differ from those of domestic students, highlighting potential challenges such as visa restrictions, financial …
Public University Gift Management Policies: Building A Best Practice Guide, Cristin Costello
Public University Gift Management Policies: Building A Best Practice Guide, Cristin Costello
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
Currently, no consistent standards exist for how institutions of higher education should manage their non-endowed gift revenue. Good stewardship of gift funds is vital to ensuring the maintenance of donor relationships to create unions that bring further financial opportunities to universities for years to come. Public institutions, as recipients of government dollars, are especially vulnerable to the negative repercussions that could come with the scandal of misappropriated gift dollars. Overall cash donations to higher education have significantly increased in the past few decades as state appropriations fall short and the need to keep tuition rates stable increases. It is more …
Reforming Need: How Certificate Of Need Laws In North Carolina Can Be Reformed To Promote Rural To Regional Health Network Integration, Taylor Fulk
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
Across North Carolina, many rural hospitals are facing closures, staffing shortages, and financial turmoil. Many hospitals, such as Morehead Hospital in Eden, NC (now UNC Rockingham), have utilized mergers with larger regional networks (e.g., UNC Health, Duke, Novant, Atrium) to stabilize operations and preserve local access to care. (deBruyn, 2017). However, even after successful integration efforts to bring some rural hospitals into larger regional networks, Certificate of Need laws in North Carolina are preventing these smaller, rural integrated hospitals from expanding their service offerings, thereby driving up healthcare expenditures for residents. As a result, patients experience longer-than-normal travel times and …
"The Only Place I'M Allowed In The City Is Court": Racial Capitalism, Gentrification, And The Criminalization Of Homelessness In Missoula, Montana, River Rafferty
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis dissects how gentrification, homelessness, and criminalization intersect and influence one another, using Missoula, Montana's recent urban camping ban as a case study.
It argues that racial capitalism, as a hermeneutic, structures the logics of Missoula's Ordinance 3747 and that gentrification, as a manifestation of racial capitalism, creates a structural imperative for the criminalization of homelessness. In addition, it asserts that local community organizations such as the Missoula Tenants Union and the Missoula Unhoused Neighbors Union offer viable alternatives to the current carceral organization of public policy, orienting space in the city toward what Ruth Wilson Gilmore terms abolition …

The study analyzes key loan-level variables; including commitment size, maturity time, facility type, pledge status, priority lien, economic sector, use of proceeds, issue year, and amortization schedule to identify cross-country variation in loan issuance patterns and borrower characteristics, comparing a selected sample of international countries with the United States. The results reveal that the market for leveraged loans has grown significantly over time, specifically due to a higher frequency …
Intersectionality Of Women's Rights Advocacy: Resource Equity, Protection From Violence, And Legal Equality, Erin Hunt
Integrated Studies
Placing a frame of intersectionality on women’s rights advocacy changes not only the way the movement is viewed, but it also strengthens the actions taken and the future processes as well. There are many intricate issues within the context of women’s rights advocacy. However, examining the intersectional issues and aspects of resource equity, protection from violence, and legal equality can attest to the fundamental concerns continually being faced. In exploring the current difficulties along with the past outcomes from an intersectional standpoint, there is a more significant possibility for affirmative change moving forward. Intersectionality within women’s rights shows the overlapping …

This study explores whether and how the co-creation of an international university course on workplace violence served as a site of transformative learning for us as nursing educators across Sweden, Ethiopia, and Tanzania. Using collaborative autoethnography, our team of six faculty members critically reflected on pedagogical assumptions, educator identities, and experiences of cross-cultural collaboration. The data comprised written reflections, meeting transcripts, and observational notes. Through this process, our pedagogical approaches and professional identities were reshaped, shifting from content deliverers to reflective co-learners within the cross-cultural partnership. Our analysis highlights the interplay of cultural negotiation, logistical frictions, and unspoken yet influential …

Biomedical Privacy And Security: Histology Image Vulnerabilities And Blockchain Solutions, Eric Ni
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Biomedical research increasingly relies on vast datasets, such as genomic sequences, electronic health records, and histology images, to advance scientific knowledge and clinical applications. However, the sensitive nature of biomedical data poses significant privacy risks, particularly with emerging capabilities of artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies. This dissertation addresses two central challenges in biomedical data privacy and security: quantifying privacy risks associated with histology images and developing innovative blockchain-based methods to ensure secure data storage and sharing.
The first part of this work investigates the vulnerability of histology images—commonly perceived as safe for public sharing—to privacy breaches. Utilizing advanced computational …
From Segregation To Censorship: The Evolution Of "States’ Rights" In Shaping American Educational Policy And Its Role In Contemporary Culture Wars, Halle Wright
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This paper traces the rhetoric of “states’ rights,” “local control,” and “parental rights” as evolving tools for shaping American public education. Using legal, political, and cultural sources, it constructs a historical timeline that shows how this rhetoric transformed from an explicit defense of segregation into a central weapon in contemporary culture wars. I begin with the post–Brown v. Board of Education era and Massive Resistance of the 1950s and 60s, when Southern officials deployed states’ rights language to resist desegregation and recast segregationist goals as “local control” and “freedom of choice.” I then examine how these arguments persisted through the …
Geochronology And Geomorphology Of The Brule Spillway Of Glacial Lake Duluth, Madeline Josephine Laaksonen
Geochronology And Geomorphology Of The Brule Spillway Of Glacial Lake Duluth, Madeline Josephine Laaksonen
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
During the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene, a series of dyssynchronous advances and retreats resulted in the evolution of the Upper St. Croix River Valley. Proglacial lakes forming at the margins of the retreating ice within the Lake Superior Basin and subsequent multiple drainage events through the Brule Spillway have also drastically shaped the landscape. As a result, the Brule Spillway and broader St. Croix River valley presents an important case study to spillover processes occurring in proglacial landscapes and the reorganization of regional drainage networks and creation of a new hydrogeomorphic regime. While prior literature on the Spillway exists, …
The Criminal System Under Racial Capitalism, Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal
The Criminal System Under Racial Capitalism, Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal
Faculty Publications
In 2021, major segments of the business lobby converged around a consensus for criminal system reform. As the United States experienced historic levels of labor market tightness, business groups argued for removing “barriers” to employment that system-involved people face. Just a few months later, the orientation of business to the criminal system was decidedly more mixed. By March 2022, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the country’s most powerful business lobby, had stepped to the forefront of the national moral panic around retail theft, launching a vigorous campaign to defend and even strengthen criminal punishment across the country.
Anchoring its analysis …

The past few years have seen several corporate diversity initiatives that include Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ+) people. In 2020, Nasdaq, the world’s second-largest stock exchange, and California, the largest state, both adopted rules to encourage board diversity for underrepresented groups, including LGBTQ+ people. Since that time, the Los Angeles Superior Court struck down California’s law, the Fifth Circuit invalidated Nasdaq’s rule, and the Trump administration initiated a slew of anti-Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) and anti-LGBTQ+ measures. In the context of this sharp ideological turn, this Article attempts to step back and tackle a larger question: how can …

Pan-Caribbean Airlines: Unlocking Regional Aviation Potential, Dimitrios V. Siskos, Alexander Maravas, Jordan Karatzas
Publications
The Caribbean's air transport system is facing significant challenges, including operational fragmentation, excessive costs, and inadequate inter-island connectivity. These challenges limit its ability to support the region’s heavily tourism-dependent economies. This research evaluates whether consolidating small Caribbean airlines into a single or virtual Pan-Caribbean carrier could transform regional air travel. Based on financial analysis, historical traffic data, and case comparisons with airline mergers in South America and the US, the paper simulates the anticipated efficiencies resulting from route consolidation, fleet standardization, and common operational services. The research concludes that consolidation may create a regional GDP impact of up to $3.3 …

Cycling is increasingly recognized for its wide range economic, environmental, and health benefits as a mobility option. However, disparities in the provision and the quality of bicycle infrastructure persists. Ensuring fair access and usage of these benefits for all presents a significant challenge. As a result, establishing effective methodologies to evaluate cycling equity is critically important. This paper synthesizes research on infrastructure asset management with a focus on equity considerations in bicycle infrastructure. A systematic review of 19 North American studies critically examines how existing research categorizes vulnerable populations and assesses fairness. The results reveal that most existing analyses focus …
Standardizing Exoneration Compensation Statutes, Farina Barth
Standardizing Exoneration Compensation Statutes, Farina Barth
Journal Articles
Wrongful convictions plague the American criminal justice system and leave lasting, unimaginable harm on the innocent. Since 1989 through February 2025, the National Registry of Exonerations reported 3,658 exonerations: a total of 32,750 years behind bars that were lost. An exoneree, once labeled a defendant, becomes a victim. To right this wrong, some states aim to make a wrongfully convicted citizen whole through compensation. However, in examining the evidence of wrongful conviction compensation, a pervasive issue is uncovered in the American compensation system: victims of wrongful incarceration are deeply undercompensated due to statutory drafting. For those states with compensation statutes, …
