The Geography Of Kuwaiti Oil Transportation 1970-1980, Waleed Ai-Menais Jan 2025

The Geography Of Kuwaiti Oil Transportation 1970-1980, Waleed Ai-Menais

The Geographical Bulletin

The transportation of oil from Kuwait between the years 1970- 80, which was a period of relative political stability, is discussed. Based on physical, geopolitical and economic factors the country elected to use tankers rather than pipelines as did many other Gulf countries. During the period 1970- 80 the oil field to transport facilities, onshore and offshore rapidly expanded and technologically improved. Paralleling this active growth, oil tanker construction and capacity had increased. In recent years geopolitical circumstances in Kuwait and emerging Asian markets justify the option of tankers moving oil via the Gulf over pipeline transport to Mediterranean ports.

Latino Migration To Green Bay, Wisconsin In The 1990s, Marcelo Cruz Jan 2025

Latino Migration To Green Bay, Wisconsin In The 1990s, Marcelo Cruz

The Geographical Bulletin

This paper explores Latino urban migration to Green Bay, Wisconsin, an intermediate size city of approximately 100,000 people. According to the census of 1990 there were approximately 1,500 Latinos living in Brown County with 1,000 ofthese living in the city of Green Bay. By 1997, estimates of the Latino population in Green Bay are from 6,000 to 7,000. Such a growth rate makes Latinos the fastest growing minority group in the city. The paper explores the nature of the migration process within the spatial and temporal context of Latino presence in the major urban centers of Wisconsin, and analyzes settlement …

Wealth Generation In Metropolitan America: F.I.R.E. As Savior?, Darryl T. Cohen, Keith G. Debbage

The Geographical Bulletin

The current restructuring of the American economy from goods producing industry to service providing industry has been a focus of concern for many social scientists. While some argue in favor of the rapidly expanding service sector, pointing out that growth in services creates employment and generates income, others emphasize that many service sector jobs pay considerably less than comparable manufacturing sector jobs, which continue to be lost in many metropolitan areas. The Finance, Insurance and Real Estate (F.I.R.E.) industry in particular, is a branch of the service sector that is often associated with the generation of affluence and productivity. This …

The Relevance Of Gamma Theta Upsilon To Geography In The 1990s, James A. Tyner, Daniel Donaldson Jan 2025

The Relevance Of Gamma Theta Upsilon To Geography In The 1990s, James A. Tyner, Daniel Donaldson

The Geographical Bulletin

The status of geography has long been a concern to its practitioners. Efforts have been proposed to increase both the visibility and vitality of geography at all educational levels. These efforts include the activities of social organizations such as Gamma Theta Upsilon (GTU). This paper tests the hypothesis that geography departments with active chapters of Gamma Theta Upsilon, a geography honor society, will experience a greater increase in declared geography majors than will departments with inactive GTU chapters. Findings confirm our hypothesis, and suggest that Gamma Theta Upsilon, as a visible and active honor society on university campuses, does contribute …

Projections And Perceptions Editorial Comment: Has Land Use Development Lost Touch With The American Landscape? The Need For Geographers In Planning, William M. Marsh Jan 2025

Projections And Perceptions Editorial Comment: Has Land Use Development Lost Touch With The American Landscape? The Need For Geographers In Planning, William M. Marsh

The Geographical Bulletin

There is a predictable sameness creeping over the fact of the North American landscape. In the past several decades, highways, shopping centers, residential subdivisions and most other forms of development have taken on a remarkable similarity from coast to coast. Not only do they look alike, but modern developments also tend to function alike, including the way they relate to the environment; that is, in the way land is cleared and graded, streets are laid out, stormwater is drained, buildings are sited and designed, and landscaping is arranged. We know that this fa~ade of development masks an inherently diverse landscape …

Pope Francis On Forced Migration: A Pastoral Of Mercy And Its Relevance In The Indonesian Context, Alexander Hendra Dwi Asmara, Martinus Dam Febrianto Jan 2025

Pope Francis On Forced Migration: A Pastoral Of Mercy And Its Relevance In The Indonesian Context, Alexander Hendra Dwi Asmara, Martinus Dam Febrianto

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

Dealing with refugees, was the late Pope Francis’ legacy, during his pontificate, both as the leader of the Catholic Church and a global figure. This article reviews Francis’ pastoral approach of mercy, especially in his concern and advocacy for migrants and refugees, as expressed through his gestures, statements, thoughts, proposals, and policies. Along with issues of global inequality and ecological damage, Francis believed that forced migration can only be addressed through joint efforts based on recognizing human dignity, solidarity, the need for participation, as well as connectivity and inclusivity that encompasses the entire human family. This article then highlights the …

Identification And Analysis On Surface Deformation In The Urban Area Of Nanchang Based On Ps-Insar Method, Mengping Zhang, Jiayi Pan, Peifeng Ma, Hui Lin

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technology has emerged as a vital tool for monitoring surface deformation due to its high accuracy and spatial resolution. With the rapid economic development of Nanchang, extensive infrastructure development and construction activities have significantly altered the urban landscape. Underground excavation and groundwater extraction in the region are potential contributors to surface deformation. This study utilized Sentinel-1 satellite data, acquired between September 2018 and May 2023, and applied the Permanent Scatterer Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PS-InSAR) technique to monitor surface deformation in Nanchang’s urban area. The findings revealed that surface deformation rates in the study area …

Languaging The Infrathin Of The Everyday Un/Clear, Claire Walsh, Edward Reardon Jan 2025

Languaging The Infrathin Of The Everyday Un/Clear, Claire Walsh, Edward Reardon

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

This paper plays within the moments felt as subject(ivity) formed within actual events, moments Whitehead describes as actual occasions. Moments pulled away from creative becoming, the Deleuze/Guattari conceptualisation of affect, their immanently relational nonbeing, to attune, or retune, into conformations acceptable to what Moten and Harney speak into as logistical capitalism and its assemblage of the ‘proper way to do things’.It is a thinking within the comprehensibility of logistical capitalism aiming “...to straighten us out, untangle [unravel] us...in the constant measure and regulation of flesh and earth,” conversing with Manning’s concept of the clear – the violent colonial destruction of …

Fine Sediment-Associated Contaminants In Gravel Bed Rivers: Evaluating Storage Times And Turnover Using Fallout Radionuclides (Frns), Enrique G. Muñoz-Arcos, Geoffrey E. Millward, Caroline C. Clason, Claudio M. Bravo-Linares, William H. Blake Jan 2025

Fine Sediment-Associated Contaminants In Gravel Bed Rivers: Evaluating Storage Times And Turnover Using Fallout Radionuclides (Frns), Enrique G. Muñoz-Arcos, Geoffrey E. Millward, Caroline C. Clason, Claudio M. Bravo-Linares, William H. Blake

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Excess fine sediment supply and its associated contaminants can have detrimental effects on water quality and river ecology with sediment deposition on, and subsequent infiltration in, streambeds impacting riverine habitats. Fallout radionuclides (FRNs) are used as tracers in aquatic systems, and the 7Be/210Pbex ratio is a useful indicator for sediment residence/storage time. Suspended and submerged mid-channel bar sediments were collected during five surveys within a 5 km reach of a typical temperate lowland agricultural river system. Solids were analysed by gamma (7Be and 210Pbex) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP, trace metals …

A Comparative Study Of Cleaning Methods Across Various Dust Types: Optimizing Cleaning Techniques For Dust-Affected Photovoltaic Panels, Ahmed Moustafa, Ahmed Tohami, Hamdy Hassan

Journal of Engineering Research

Solar energy is increasingly crucial for generating electricity and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. However, the efficiency of photovoltaic (PV) panels is substantially affected by dust accumulation. This research aims to enhance the performance and longevity of solar panels by evaluating various eco-friendly cleaning techniques for different dust types: Yellow Sand, Normal Dust, and Mud. The methods tested include low, medium, and high-water flow rates, medium flow rates with a wiper, compressed medium flow, and air blowing. Key performance metrics such as temperature, current, voltage, and power were measured before and after cleaning to assess effectiveness. The results demonstrate that …

Extensive Admixture Among Karst-Obligate Salamanders Reveals Evidence Of Recent Divergence And Gene Exchange Through Aquifers, Chris C. Nice, Katherine L. Bell, Zachariah Gompert, Lauren K. Lucas, James R. Ott, Ruben U. Tovar, Paul Crump, Peter H. Diaz

Biology Faculty Publications

Karst ecosystems often contain extraordinary biodiversity, but the complex underground aquifers of karst regions present challenges for assessing and conserving stygobiont diversity and investigating their evolutionary history. We examined the karst-obligate salamanders of the Eurycea neotenes species complex in the Edwards Plateau region of central Texas using population genomics data to address questions about population connectivity and the potential for gene exchange within the underlying aquifer system. The E. neotenes species complex has historically been divided into three nominal species, but their status, and spatial extent of species ranges, have remained uncertain. We discovered evidence of extensive admixture among species …

Global Estimates Of The Storage And Transit Time Of Water Through Vegetation, Andrew Felton, Joshua B. Fisher, Koen Hufkens, Adam J. Purdy, Seth A. Spawn-Lee, Lou F. Duloisy, Gregory R. Goldsmith

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

The time it takes for water to transit from the ground back to the atmosphere affects weather, climate, biogeochemistry and ecosystem function. The transit time of water through vegetation, defined as the age of water transpiring from vegetation since time of entry, is a particularly understudied aspect of the terrestrial hydrologic cycle. Here we use a synergy of satellite remote sensing measurements over a five-year period to estimate global aboveground vegetation water storage to be on average 484 km3, roughly half of which is stored in Earth’s water-limited savannah, grassland and shrubland ecosystems. We then combine these storage …

Connecting The Dots: From The Mythical East To The “Real Asia”, Paulo Jorge De Sousa Pinto Jan 2025

Connecting The Dots: From The Mythical East To The “Real Asia”, Paulo Jorge De Sousa Pinto

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

Magellan opened a new connecting link among Europe, Asia, and America, paving the way for the formation of a global world. But it was also a point of arrival of a long process that went back to antiquity. For many centuries, Europe and Asia had a fragmentary and distorted image of each other. In Europe, confusing notions of “East,” “Asia,” or “India” crossed antiquity and the Middle Ages and mixed fabulous tales with real data about what was beyond the Persian Empire or, later, the Muslim world. The information circulated mainly through land trade routes. In the fifteenth century, Iberian …

Movement competence (MC) and emotional intelligence (EI) are positively associated and important for child development. Intervention research is needed to determine causal relationships between these outcomes. Gamification is a pedagogical model that may enhance MC and EI, but implementing interventions in schools is complex and requires multi-stakeholder involvement to ensure feasibility, acceptability and sustainability. However, methodological evidence to inform co-development work within physical education (PE) is lacking and further research is required. This study describes the process of co-developing a gamified PE intervention with school stakeholders to increase MC and EI among primary-aged children. A total of 91 children and …

Doing Doctorates Differently: The Parapedagogic Potentialities Of The Phd Process, Helen Bowstead, Ken Gale, Mary Catherine Garland, Claire Walsh

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Coming together in this conference collectivity, these are doctorates that in their doing – thinking, researching, writing, supervising, assessing, publishing – live by “no preexisting rules, processes, methods, categories or ‘determining judgement’.”1 They are doctorates that “cannot be taught or learned.”23 Such PhDs – thesis’ refusing to (con)form – in their ever probing, in-forming, stubborn curiousness of problematics living beyond solution driven research, lead to transformative moments in the act of learning, that in their difference are “...made sense of, not in terms of what [they] mean but in terms of what [they] do.”4Yet in their difference, doctorates working within …

The Compact Clause And Cyberwar, Josie Laing Jan 2025

The Compact Clause And Cyberwar, Josie Laing

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

This article seeks to bring attention to the potential modern utility of Article 1, Section 10, Clause 3: the Compact Clause. This section of the Constitution has historically been archived. However, given cyberspace’s ever-growing prominence, the Compact Clause should be reconsidered as cyber warfare presents a novel opportunity for states to exercise their sovereign rights.

Section 10 restricts states’ powers to engage with foreign entities. Without the consent of Congress, states cannot enter into agreements with foreign powers or engage in war. These restrictions on states were necessary when the Constitution was drafted. To navigate foreign affairs nimbly, the United …

Objectives: Multiplex immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence (mIHC/IF) are emerging technologies that can be used to help define complex immunophenotypes in tissue, quantify immune cell subsets, and assess the spatial arrangement of marker expression. mIHC/IF assays require concerted efforts to optimize and validate the multiplex staining protocols prior to their application on slides. The best practice guidelines for staining and validation of mIHC/IF assays across platforms were previously published by this task force. The current effort represents a complementary manuscript for mIHC/IF analysis focused on the associated image analysis and data management.

Methods: The Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer convened a task …

Divergent Bodyminds: Kin In The Difference, Ruth Churchill Dower, Claire Walsh Jan 2025

Divergent Bodyminds: Kin In The Difference, Ruth Churchill Dower, Claire Walsh

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

In breaking the habit of ‘making sense’ typified by normative, neurotypical modes of engagement with the world, neurodiverse sociality performs a treachery in relation to prescriptive, dominating forms of normative reality. Within this conference paper, a modest site of resistance, a reconsideration of neurotypical normative reality takes place, extending beyond the boundaries underpinning neurotypical hegemonic discourse about ‘human’ reality, identity and existence: rescinding the neurotypical “normative standard for human experience” requiring the mapping of bodies in advance, to foreground bodies in excess, neurodiverse bodies subject to patterns and rhythms that defy stable or coherent identification. As bodies “always extending beyond …

From Land Reform To Landfare: Land Claims And The Welfare State In Kerala, India, Sudheesh R.C Jan 2025

From Land Reform To Landfare: Land Claims And The Welfare State In Kerala, India, Sudheesh R.C

Articles

While large-scale land reform may still be underway in many countries, other contexts have states responding to land claims through scattered land provision measures. This article puts forward “landfare” as a lens to capture such measures and unpacks its features in one location. The article first explains this term, outlining its location in and departure from the land reform scholarship. It next shows how Kerala, India, widely cited in the scholarship for its 20th century land reform, addresses the land claims of its Adivasi citizens in the 21st century through landfare. Through an exploration of Adivasi land claims and an …
