Characterization Of Thin Marble Slabs Cut With Roman Water-Powered Stone Saw Millsfrom Western Asia Minor, Hakan Elçi̇, Ramazan Hacimustafaoğlu, Serdar Aybek
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
This study examined the mineralogical, petrographic, technological, and material properties of thinly cut marble slabs usedin the flooring and cladding of the frigidarium section of a bath constructed in the 2nd century AD in Metropolis, a city that connectedtwo significant centers in Western Asia Minor-Ephesus and Smyrna-during the Roman period. The study also explains the possibletechniques and methods by which these marble slabs could have been cut so thinly. The thickness of the marble slabs used was closelyrelated to their material properties. Bluish grey, with calcite veins with low flexural strength, containing medium to coarse crystallinecalcite veins, and white marbles …

Classification Of Asia Minor Marbles Based On Crystal Size For Archaeometric Assignment, Ramazan Hacimustafaoğlu, Hakan Elçi̇
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
This study was carried out to determine the range of crystal sizes of Asia Minor marbles and to classify the marbles accordingto crystal size. Asia Minor marbles have been used as building stones since ancient times. The literature already includes studies on theircrystal sizes; however, different studies performed on marbles of the same locality have reported different crystal size classes, which hascaused complexity. To eliminate this complexity, this study used multidirectional petrographic analyses on the eight known Asia Minormarbles. Thin sections were photographed under a polarizing microscope, and the crystal sizes of the samples were measured usingcomputerized image analysis. An …

The Important Role Of Pollinators In Sustainability Education, Bronwen Cowie, Paula Mildenhall
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
In this chapter we illustrate some of the ways the education sector can play a key role, not just in educating and activating students as advocates for and agents of sustainability but also in motivating and mobilising communities towards a sustainability agenda. Initially in this chapter it was important to look back and identify how important bees have been through the ages, noting that humans identified very early on that bees could enhance their lives. We then outline some of the contributions a focus on bees can make to sustainability education. One important contribution includes fostering a balanced perspective on …

Navigating Sovereignty And Global Economic Norms: Balancing Imf And World Bank Adjustment Policies With Developmental Realities, Michael Dudzinski
Navigating Sovereignty And Global Economic Norms: Balancing Imf And World Bank Adjustment Policies With Developmental Realities, Michael Dudzinski
San Diego International Law Journal
The Structural Adjustment Programs (SAPs) administered by the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank aim to foster economic stability, growth, and poverty reduction in developing countries. However, the varied outcomes of these programs underscore the challenges of applying standardized economic reforms across diverse geopolitical landscapes. This analysis calls for a paradigm shift towards more tailored, context-sensitive approaches that recognize the unique circumstances of each recipient country. By prioritizing flexibility and local engagement, SAPs can better support sustainable development and economic stability, aligning international financial policies with the complex realities of global economic diversity.
“Where War Is God And God Is War:” Women’S Religious Great War Poetry And Homefront Lines, Faith Ellington
“Where War Is God And God Is War:” Women’S Religious Great War Poetry And Homefront Lines, Faith Ellington
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This project seeks to redefine war’s poetic landscape. Through a focus on women’s Great War poetry, I argue against a dichotomous home front | front line poetic barrier and instead explore the intermingling of wartime spaces. Women’s WWI poetry, I argue, exists within a space I call the homefront lines, a space in which women produce writing from their full experiences of war regardless of combatant status. The homefront lines must be included in World War I literary canons in order to fully recognize the humanity of women during wartime and to fully grasp the war’s impact on poetry …

The Arc From Non-Justiciable To Fundamental: The History Of School Funding Challenges In Pennsylvania, Claudia De Palma, Dan Urevick-Ackelsberg
Widener Commonwealth Law Review
Pennsylvania has recognized the importance of public education since the Commonwealth’s inception in 1776. Although early versions of the Pennsylvania Constitution only contemplated a discretionary system of schools for poor children, in 1834 the state’s public education system was expanded through statute to provide schooling to all children. Thaddeus Stevens, one of the founding fathers of this expansion, explained that the purpose of a universal public education system was to ensure that “the blessing of education shall be conferred on every son of Pennsylvania—shall be carried home to the poorest child of the poorest inhabitant of the meanest hut of …
Navigating Trauma: A Linguistic Exploration Of Bilingual Trauma Expressions, Amira Mahmoud Othman
Navigating Trauma: A Linguistic Exploration Of Bilingual Trauma Expressions, Amira Mahmoud Othman
Theses and Dissertations
This study explores the relationship between language, trauma, and emotional expression among bilingual Arabic-English speakers, focusing on code-switching patterns and euphemisms, and more broadly the emotional roles of native and non-native languages in trauma narratives. Through qualitative interviews with 20 Egyptian participants, the research reveals that code-switching serves as both a linguistic and emotional tool, allowing speakers to navigate trauma by creating distance or engaging more intimately. Such codeswitching patterns include the integration of English content words within Arabic structures, morphosyntactic innovations, and gender agreement applications, reflecting the creative adaptability of bilingual speakers in emotionally charged contexts, in line with …
Commensality In The Eateries Of Roman Pompeii, Amaya Yolanda Eckersley
Commensality In The Eateries Of Roman Pompeii, Amaya Yolanda Eckersley
Dissertations and Theses
Despite a nearly 300-year excavation history at Pompeii and many identified eating and drinking establishments, social behavior in these public or semi-public spaces has eluded significant research. Elite Roman literature is the traditional guideline for understanding Roman mealtimes and what they meant for social behavior. This literature, however, fails to accurately represent its sub-elite inhabitants. These sub-elites of Rome largely had their meals prepared outside of their homes. Pompeii is no exception and provides a massive boon for researchers willing to consider archaeological evidence. The buildings and evidence buried at Pompeii have ultimately shown a wide array of tabernae related …

Geography
Observing the Earth with satellites offers clear advantages when it comes to tracking the health of the planet—consistent measurements that can be translated into environmentally relevant estimates, such as carbon, crop productivity, or land use. The resulting information covers large regions, irrespective of administrative boundaries. These measurements also drastically reduce costs compared with on-the-ground data collection efforts. Earth observation (EO) data thereby efficiently deliver timely insights that can directly inform sustainability debates, including with regard to United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). At the heart of these efforts are open data initiatives linked to the public release of medium- …
Sustaining Private Higher Education Institutions’ Quality With Expandability And Inclusivity, Amal Salah
Sustaining Private Higher Education Institutions’ Quality With Expandability And Inclusivity, Amal Salah
Theses and Dissertations
Abstract The private higher education sector in Egypt is rapidly expanding. The Government of Egypt (GOE) supports its growth by providing legislation and incentives with the main objective of offering high-quality higher education to the growing youth bulge. Private universities react to the successive economic crises by raising their fees in order to maintain the quality of education. In the absence of supporting financial schemes for individual students, the surge in fees perpetuates inequity in access to private higher education for the lower socio-economic strata of the Egyptian society. This paper aims to address a gap in research concerning the …

Cultural Influences On Parental Advocacy For Inclusion: Experiences Of South Asian Families With Children With Extensive Support Needs, Sudha Krishnan
Cultural Influences On Parental Advocacy For Inclusion: Experiences Of South Asian Families With Children With Extensive Support Needs, Sudha Krishnan
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
This qualitative study examined the cultural factors in parental advocacy in South Asian parents of children with extensive support needs (ESN), concerning the educational placement decisions for their children. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic coding. The findings revealed that the predominant preference for segregated educational settings among participants was shaped by various cultural influences: persistent social stigma surrounding disability, a culturally-rooted belief in the curability of the disability, the prioritization of safety over academic integration, perceived inadequacies within general education settings, institutional pressures from school or IEP recommendations, advocacy for intensive home-based instruction, and a …

Toward Quantifying Interpolation Uncertainty In Set-Line Spacing Hydrographic Surveys, Elias Adediran, Christos Kastrisios, Kim Lowell, Glen Rice, Qi Zhang
Faculty Publications
The oceans remain one of Earth’s last great unknowns, with about 74% still unmapped to modern standards. Consequently, interpolation is employed to create seamless digital bathymetric models (DBMs) from incomplete hydrographic datasets, but this introduces unquantified depth uncertainties. This study aims to estimate and characterize uncertainties arising from set-line spacing hydrographic surveys, which are important for nautical charting, navigational safety, and many other applications. By sampling at different line spacings four complete coverage testbeds that vary in slope and roughness, the study interpolates across entire testbed areas using Spline, Inverse Distance Weighting, and Linear interpolation. The resulting interpolation uncertainties are …

The Geography Of The European Dreadnought Race: 1884-1919, William D. Walters, Jr.
The Geography Of The European Dreadnought Race: 1884-1919, William D. Walters, Jr.
The Geographical Bulletin
The launching of HMS Dreadnought in 1906 is sometimes regarded as the start of the warship building race preceding World War One and is often seen as one of the causes of that war. In fact, the European battleship building race goes back to the 1880s. Most of the countries of Europe participated in some way in this race, which involved significant transfer of technology from the more developed to the less developed countries of Europe. Spain, Italy and Russia received significant aid from armaments firms in northern and western Europe. During the period before the war, battleships dominated naval …

Late Holocene Coastal And Estuarine Environments Of The Shanghai Area, People's Republic Of China, Li Jinan, Yan Qinshang
Late Holocene Coastal And Estuarine Environments Of The Shanghai Area, People's Republic Of China, Li Jinan, Yan Qinshang
The Geographical Bulletin
Four major sedimentary environments have been identified in the Shanghai area which were deposited over the past 7,000 years, 3 to 20 meters above a Pleistocene basal clay. These are marsh, lagoon, recurved spit and tidal flat. The morphology west of Shanghai is a fresh water marsh since it was not transgressed by rising Holocene sea levels. In the central area, a recurved spit and lagoon had developed from 6,500 years B.P. to 3,500 years B.P. However, the tidal flat has characterized coastal sedimentation in the eastern part of Shanghai since 3,000 years B.P.

Thematic Innovation On The North American Colonial Frontier: Comparisons Of The Four Historic Maps Of Fort Michilimackinac, Michigan 1749-1769, Richard Alan Sambrook
The Geographical Bulletin
To date, four historic maps of Fort Michilimackinac, Michigan are recognized: de Lotbiniere's Plan and Description (1749), the Magra Map (1766), the Nordberg Map (1769), and the Crown Collection Map (circa 1766-1769). These maps are all different in a number of important map features, including scale, style, technique, and portrayal of the type and detail of information included on the map, especially the accuracy of the location and size of structures within the fort. This paper also demonstrates the wealth of social, cultural and architectural information contained within the four existing historic maps. In conjunction these maps have both aided …
Planning With Place: Sense Of Place In Berlin, New Hampshire, Brooks Preston
Planning With Place: Sense Of Place In Berlin, New Hampshire, Brooks Preston
The Geographical Bulletin
This study applies a phenomenological framework to the study of place in Berlin, New Hampshire. The results of Berlin's efforts to identify sense of place are compared with the findings generated by a phenomenological approach to the study of place. It is shown that the attributes and qualities of place that are most important to the people of Berlin are mentioned in the phenomenological interviews but sometimes overlooked or misinterpreted by the city's efforts. Sense of place is not embodied purely in the landscape or heritage, but exists in the minds of the people. Sense of place is a dynamic …
Projections And Perceptions-Editorial Comments. The Good Fortune Of Being A Geographer, Charles F. Gritzner
Projections And Perceptions-Editorial Comments. The Good Fortune Of Being A Geographer, Charles F. Gritzner
The Geographical Bulletin
How refreshing it is to see this brief and very upbeat reference to being a geographer in "Notes from Ptolemy" (January 1992 AAG Newsletter). Extremely fortunate we are indeed to be geographers! Being a geographer and " doing geography" are challenging, meaningful, satisfying, and fun. Geographic knowledge can be a marvelous source of intrinsic satisfaction; increasingly it also can offer substantial vocational rewards. During most of more than three decades in academe, an aura of gloom and doom prevailed for all but a select few young students aspiring to become geographers. Employment opportunities were sparse. Geography languished in the elementary …

Seasonal values of maximum temperature, minimum temperature and precipitation were examined in a study of climatic trends and variability for winter and summer in central Montana. Regional trends for the three climatic elements were graphed for the period 1949- 1986. A Student's T-test was utilized in order to detect significant changes. For winter, temperature declined significantly from the 1960s into the 1970s while snowfall increased slightly followed by a slight decrease during the 1980s. For summer, although maximum temperatures were significantly cooler during the 1950s, very little change in temperatures generally occurred. Although rainfall fluctuations were observed, no distinct trends …

This research was designed to determine the impact of topographic variables on the total length of avalanche chutes in southern Glacier National Park, Montana. Seventy-eight snow avalanche paths were manually interpreted from aerial photographs within the study area, and their outlines were delineated on U.S. Geological Survey topographic maps with a scale of 1 :24,000. Terrain variables were either measured directly from the maps or derived from the original ones. Terrain parameters were first analyzed by using the descriptive statistical method. Total path length was then regressed against the independent variables elevation, orientation, and slope gradient. We found that: (a) …
Gravestone Landscape Evolution Of A Japanese Rural Community, Tadashi Nakagawa
Gravestone Landscape Evolution Of A Japanese Rural Community, Tadashi Nakagawa
The Geographical Bulletin
Quantitative and chronological examination of 99 gravestones of four cemeteries in a rural community northeast of Tokyo reveals the effectiveness of gravestone study in reconstructing historical geography of Japanese rural villages. Temporal patterns of gravestone inscription, the number of bases and such design elements as vases, water holders, and incense burners clearly show the changing styles and values toward burial customs, economic conditions, and some aspects of family units.
